- Charlie Finlayson was just 13 and alone with his dad David deep in the backcountry. They were on a hiking trip in The Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness in Idaho, USA when a boulder fell on David. The boulder, about the size of a refrigerator, broke loose and struck the 52-year-old, sending him careening 30 feet down the mountain and knocking him unconscious. He suffered a broken back, left arm and heel, and a gash to his leg through to the bone. He was severely injured and his life was in the hands of his young son as he was dangling in the void over 1000 ft off a huge cliff in the Bighorn Crags.

One thing that was not mentioned is they did have a Garmin for navigation. But no SOS device.
This one was very touching and emotional to produce. David always putting his son first, even with the life threatening injuries, he was able to fight through it to make sure Charlie was ok. And for Charlie, words can't describe the way he handled the situation. I can't even imagine how proud David is of his son.
While many might question why David would take his young son rock climbing, I see a dad wanting to share with his son the one thing he loves. I'm sure if Charlie didn't like it, David wouldn't have forced it on him. But Charlie loved it and it was a way for a father and son to bond. Some go hunting, ride bikes, ride atvs, scuba diving, play sports, etc. All have some level of danger, but that's what makes sharing these activities so amazing between father and son. It was a freak accident, not human error. From what I researched, David was a very experienced and safe climber. So much, where his mom didn't mind Charlie sharing in these activities with her ex-husband. David never took Charlie on any climbs really dangerous as far as rock climbing goes. The systems David had in place like using a Grigri saved his life, along with his incredibly courageous son. He taught his son so well, he was able to lower his dad off a big cliff by himself. Yes, it was a big mistake to not have a SOS device. Luckily, he had a Charlie.

Love this episode brother, thanks for your hard work doing these, it doesn't go unnoticed, love these stories and I tell many people interested in this stuff about your channel. As a retired veteran I can say the human body is capable of so much more if you dig real deep, amazing.
Have u ever looked at the price of an sos device do you think every single person that wants to camp or be in the woods wants to spend 5-10 thousand dollars.. DIDNT think so
@@dashagernega7063 if you’re doing a dangerous sport in 1,000s of acres of land just invest the $200 for a satellite phone

I see a man way to STUPID to be allowed to have kids and should have been fixed where he could never have kids. And how the Hell did the boys mother put up with this? My wife would have kicked my ass if I ever told her I was putting her son in this type of danger.
His son is a brave, courageous young man and a hero! What an amazing boy!
He sure is amazing.
Is amazing how people focus on the negative side of the story! The reality of this event is how amazing and brave this kid was at such a young age! Definitely a super hero in my book
Lets also give a round of applause to the guy who just runs out of the woods randomly who happens to be a human that covers great distances in a situation where time is of the essence.

I know! Amazing ❤️
Charlie prayed and God sent him a marathon runner because it was an emergency.😇
@@user-px2mu1rd5b”god” didn’t send anyone. a human being selflessly saved their lives. it’s messed up to diminish the efforts of real people, like this man.
funny how people always credit god when something goes right but not when things go wrong. 🙄
This is why I run. Never know what one needs to be prepared for.
This is incredible! What an ordeal! A miracle David survived and can still climb! And what to say about Charlie? What an incredibly brave and smart kid! Thank God this story had a happy ending. Truly inspiring! God bless him forever!
It really is so incredible. How proud of a dad must David be! Charlie was amazing.
Thank god for the happy ending spoiler alert. Most of these disasters don't have them.
@@posticusmaximus1739 Most definitely. Wanted a happy ending story for a Father's day.
Love it when a comment like this shows up at the top. At first it was like oh no so the kid didn’t survive. But no, he did. Thanks for the play by play.
at least they died doing what they loved
Incredible how David's leg was rebuilt. Charlie is a hero
What an incredible kid. I’m sure this was really traumatizing, but he displayed maturity and bravery well beyond any 13-year-old I’ve ever met. I hope both of them are doing well.
I'm so proud of Charlie... and I'm so glad his dad survived. I'm watching this on Father's Day so it's even more emotional ❤
What an amazing young man Charlie is he stayed calm and saved his dad at such a young age, what a brave boy in such a scary situation. If I ever go hiking/rock climbing I'm definitely taking Charlie with me.
you take charlie, i'm taking a sat phone or an apple watch ultra
Seriously! He successfully brought his Father down 1000 feet of cliff face (with boulders falling around them!) The pain that those extensive injuries must have caused, is indescribable. Yet, Charlie was able to remain cool headed, as he dressed & redressed the horrific wounds. Broken limbs, & shredded tendons, with one leg in hanging pieces, would make any ADULT person want to wretch or feel faint, panic. But not Charlie!🫡
13 year old Charlie. I am speechless. Getting him down the rock. Encouraging him back to camp. Keeping him alive. Going for help. God is Love.
Amen. Charlie handled this situation with so much poise. Even when he was scared, he gathered himself and stepped up when it was desperate. I'm truly amazed by this young man.
I recently dislocated and broke my ankle hiking and had to be stretchered out (kind of embarrassing) and couldn't even have stood up much less dragged myself down a mountain. Cheers to David. Love for his son motivated him to keep going. I hope he is a good place in life now.
U could have if needed
I grew up mountain climbing, backpacking, and eventually spelunking, and never was it ever just my dad, my brothers, and I. We always had multiple adults around and everyone knew that keeping an eye on the kids was part of the expedition. I think it's great to introduce your children to the outdoors, but this guy turned his child into an accessory, and that's a recipe for disaster, either on or off the trail.
Doing dangerous activities such as these should never be done alone, and when you're with a small child, you are essentially all by yourself. They are lucky to be alive. This guy endangered his child and himself, as much of Charlie's suffering could have been prevented, if they were accompanied by another adult.
You don't need a group of people. I solo backcountry hike all the time, and all that is needed is an sos beacon.
@@darnh6012 I suppose your beacon is going to call for help, if you're unconscious, or ill? Is it going to fight off an animal attack? Is a beacon going to find you supplies or aid, until help can arrive? The answer is "no" to all those questions. A beacon can only do so much and only really covers instances of simply being lost. It isn't a safeguard against the worst things that can happen to you all alone, because you never know if a misplaced step is going to send you down an embankment with a boulder atop one of our limbs, or if a drought-stricken black bear is going to see you as lunch.
Many, many seasoned backpackers and hikers have died all alone, because they overestimated their skills, and underestimated the danger of going it by themselves. Worst is when someone puts too much faith in gear that not only carries the risk of user error, but also the disadvantage of only being able to a distress signal. It can't tell you if help has received your signal, and it can't send communication as to the nature of your emergency. All recipes for disaster, when it strikes.
No one is immune to reality.
Dad cared more about his ego than the danger of exposing a child to his unprepared adventure.
@@NextToToddliness I don't mind some risk. I'm not going to cover every possible risk. I wouldn't leave the house if I'd try and cover every risk. I'd be curious if you have been surfing? Or even just swimming in the ocean? Two great sports with tons of enjoyment over the years. I wouldn't pass those up because of the one in 10 million chance of getting hurt doing them.
Nothing worse than getting to the crag and seeing climbing gym vans. 3 a crowd, 2 is perfect.
I am speechless that both of them still climb! It would have been my last one for sure. Charlie is an amazing kid for what he did and how he behaved in this terrible situation.
What an incredible story! Mad respect for that young man to hold his composure and not panic where most grown men would. ❤
Oh my gosh!! What an amazing story!! Thank you for telling their harrowing tale. The fact that medical science was able to build him with a leg with bovine tissue is beyond incredible. I love science so much, so that part stood out to me. Charlie was an extremely brave boy.
He really is an amazing young man.
I was born and raised in Idaho. The frank church is truly awe inspiring and prehistoric. It’s VERY rugged and I would not underestimate the potential for injury and loss of life. It’s an incredible adventure but it’s definitely dangerous!
After producing this video, I definitely want to get out there. Looks incredible.
@@outdoordisasters I wouldn't recommend rock climbing there...
That was a very dangerous place to hike for 2 weeks! I would never advise climbing thousands of feet of sheer rock, with my 13 year old! You are in such a remote area, & rock climbing is quite a dangerous thing to do. Questionable common sense, courting disaster. At least invest in a SAT phone, please!!!
They really got lucky! He should have died from those injuries, & would have, if Charlie didn't find any help by days end. Charlie showed bravery way beyond his years!
WOW! What a great story! A must watch! Outdoor Disasters has outdone itself on this! What a smart courageous kid! Glad it ended well! Stories like this are why Outdoor Disasters is the best of this type on CZcams!

Fantastic video of Survival by a father and son! I can't even imagine being 13 and having that happen to my dad. That young man showed true courage and resilience in that situation as well as bravery and courage! I'm glad that his dad is okay and that they got through their disaster in the wilderness. Looking forward to your next video. Happy Father's day!
@Outdoor Disasters I watched this amazing Story of Survival about a young man from Canada named Jeremy Evans who survived getting mauled 3 times by a female Grizzly bear in the Alberta Wilderness while out on a hunting trip. Maybe you could do a video about this?
Story of stupidity and bad choices. Awful father.
@@timberdaniels7317 I do like animal attack videos. And I did dabble into it. But it didn't perform well, so I stay away from those type of videos.
@@outdoordisasters no problem, I understand. Looking forward to your next video! Have a great week.
What an incredible tale of competence, both the kid and the bystanders. He was so lucky to find a boyscout troop then a marathon runner to get help. Everything came together to save that man's life.
Great Father’s Day story, this son was so brave and amazing 🎉
As a climber, I used to read the yearly Accidents in N American Mountaineering. Many of the accidents (most involving at least one fatality) share a couple of common cause categories; attempting objectives beyond the team’s capabilities and/or level of preparedness being one of them. Preparedness includes physical, mental, and having appropriate gear. Overestimating one’s abilities is another. It seems minimum equipment for a team in such remote circumstances would include a Garmin InReach. It also seems somewhat...questionable?...to place a young man in such a circumstance. The kid’s a demonstrated mountaineer, though, who handled it when it needed to be handled. Good for him, and many successful adventures to him.
Charlie was more of a man at 13 than most at 30. I dont know that i could have done that. I had the ability and skill at that age but i dont know that, emotionally, i could have been as strong as Charlie. Im so glad to see hes still adventuring.
It’s because his father taught him. His father is an extra ordinary man!! The mental strength to stay alive and help in his rescue!!❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Charlie you are a rock star young man! You were truly courage under fire, and you saved you dad's life! Bravo!!!!!!!!
What an anxiety inducing story! A tale of adventure, survival, love and pain. Ego and triumph, unexpectedly a father’s selfishness at the core of it all. It literally has it all and it was beautifully told. Thank you Outdoor Disasters for the entertainment and lesson.
Selflessness….is the correct word. He was not being “selfish”
God said to Solomon do all that is within ure heart, but we all will stand be4 the living Hollie God
I started working at a young age and had danger at work all my life. Farming, Logging, Construction.
Kids are resilient and can accept responsibility but lack experience so you got to watch for them.
On the other hand, it blows my mind that people do this stuff for the " fun " of it.
Re: Charlie/David accident, I don't know if this would have applied back in 2015... but, if you're going to be in the back country, carry a SPOT device or other similar brand of emergency satellite communication. That way you can get a signal out w/o having to hike 3 days to a Ranger station.
That hurts me to hear that. What a horrific ordeal. It's a miracle they survived. Why would anyone take that risk without at least an SOS device?
His father was an idiot for taking such a chance with his young son. Unbelievably irresponsible.
@@MsAmique They're LDS, and don't need a rescue device when they wear their God approved special underwear.
@@paul9156cWhat?!?
@@annehedonia156 lds = latter day saints = mormons
@@annehedonia156 Yes, good Mormons wear all white, loose fitting underwear, sold to them by their church. A derogatory term they find offensive is "magic underwear". They probably would make good white flags to signal help, or surrender.
Why anyone wouldn't carry a satellite emergency beacon in this day and age is beyond me.
I spent less than a hundred dollars for mine and pay the monthly $12 fee, and my outdoor adventures are nowhere near as challenging as those described in these videos. The cost is low and the weight is negligible. How much would you be willing to spend on one if you found yourself dangling on a rope a thousand feet above the ground?
Exactly, how much is your life worth to you?
Please tell me which brand and model of beacon you bought. I cannot find an affordable one.
Zoleo seems to be the most affordable and easy to use for me that is
Good ending, but the take away I get from this is Dad should have had a satellite phone. I have hiked remotely and you NEVER know what is going to happen. When I started watching I did not expect him to survive. So glad it turned out the way it did.
It's one thing to put yourself in danger but the father took foolhardy risks with his sons' safety. No matter how skilled he was, the boy just didnt have the physical strength of an adult. Hopefully the father learned from the experience.
Frightening story but if he was so experienced why no flares, special phones etc???A wonderful son..
Love is an unbreakable and powerful bond which goes beyond anything physically possible.

David taught Charlie well! Charlie is so awesome, the kind of young person we need more of! That's a beautiful story.
His son Charlie is a hero!❤
Notice how the young man never lost faith and when he needed it the most, help arrived, way to go, what a brave young man!
I don’t know if you’re aware of this but, I LOVE your channel and content!! Man, you do such great work. What a story. What a strong kiddo!
Years ago, not far from where I grew up, there was a kid two or three years younger than me who went with his dad up into the hills on a hike. They got caught in a storm, and a flash flood that washed out the trail. The both of them were killed. I heard that all they found of the boy was one of his light up sneakers. There is a memorial picnic area dedicated to them in that park from where the trail begins.
I went to the same elementary school as that kid, I was in 6th grade when it happened, he was in 3rd or 4th. That was Matt Henderson and his dad, may they rest in peace.

What a courageous, brave young man! Well told epic as always, Outdoor Disasters! Keep em coming!
Outdoor adventures are a great thing to introduce your kids to. Creating a love of the outdoors is great parenting. What isn’t great parenting is taking too much risk. You’ll never have no risk but as a parent you put the child’s safety above your own wants.
A beautiful story of love of a father and son. And because he prayed God answered him 👏
I kept waiting to hear David was decapitated but Charlie stitched it back on and told his dad to keep on going😂😂 this was an amazing story. Well Charlie did do a great job, David deserves a whole lot of praise himself. As someone who has broken a hip when I was not near anyone, I can tell you the pain of walking just a few feet is incredible. I had to walk about 30-45 ft, and it took me an hour. The fact that he was able to walk through a Boulder field is simply amazing.
Still seems a little irresponsible. 1000ft up and a 13 year old, no phone, no radio, no flares, no people no backup plan. Kind of avoidable and completely preventable.
Most of my lifetime we had none of these communication devices. Most of the world most of our existence we were on our own
@@katanaki3059 I understand that but were rock climbing a 1000ft upl

What an amazing story. I'm glad they both survived this ordeal and Charlie is such an amazing person. I hope he does well the rest of his life.
When a father and son situation of “holding a life in his small hands” while controlling a (simple) rappel,” goes suddenly to “holding a life in his small hands” with every skill he’s learned, every contingency he can develop, and every need to be an adult 13 year old who loves his father and needs him to survive. There are levels to the Responsibility we have during recreation or regular reality; from the merely mutually challenging (the device assisted belay) to the requirement to dig deeply into preparedness previously unrecognized!!
For the love of God, carry an SOS device in these remote areas!
What an amazing story. I'm so glad it had a happy ending. God bless Charlie, what a courageous young man.

Amazing how much the body can withstand, brave young man!
Making your child take part in a sport known for fatalities- amongst seasoned climbers. A boy has no free will and would never risk disapproval from his father. Men who have something to prove all the time are children. Only a child isn't fearful of high risk whose reward is purely symbolic. At around 18, our brains rewire out of that phase if we're maturing at a normal rate.
Wow. These two men are so lucky to be alive!
Great information! THANKS AS ALWAYS FOR A MOVING AND MEANINGFUL STORY!
