  • With a predicted forecast saying westerly strengthening in the arvo I made a plan to head out early and tuck in behind one of the the closer gulf islands for the day. This meant the good ole bait and berley bash and maybe a few livies sent down the trail if they were about. Pea was keen to join and with a high around 11.00ish there was no hurry to head out, arriving at the ramp around 8.30 we slipped in the little FC and made our quick 5min run in behind the island we were going to fish. I love how easy this little FC boat is and even more so when you have a fun day on $5 gas...
I decided to start at an old school spot and coming up on the little rise we normally fish I couldn't believe how much bait fish was sitting on it - there just had to be a few good fish hanging around this mass bait school. With the wind yet to show Pea sorted out a little sabiki rig to run while on the drift flicking softies. As soon as Pea dropped the sabiki he was pulling strings of 3-5 macs at a time. The screen was just chocker and although Pea was also keen to flick a softie he just didn't have time as he was catching bait fish while dropping the sabiki. I got a couple of hits on the softie but once the livey tank filled up I opted out to drift a live bait. I love live baiting for Snapper and these were nice little luscious baits for them. We pretty much had the tank full after 2-3 drifts so we went back to our plan and anchored up and dropped the berley.
We had plenty of baits live, fresh and pillies - we like to start with pillies to help get the sent going and it didn't take long for me to pick up our first little snap. I got a couple pretty quick but then after the small ones turned up in big numbers, we did get the odd good hit between them but after 2hrs it was time to move. We tried closer in with not much difference so we decided to do a good 200mtr shift down toward the corner of the island. We dropped the pick and berley once again and although we had a few small fish at first it felt a lot more fishey after seeing blue maumau in the trail.
30mins in and Pea was hooked up to something better, we were straylining livies and also yellows cut in half which held out for the better fish to have ago. Pea was onto a lot better fish and couple mins later a nice red appeared. It was a good fish that made it's way to the bin, there was a lot smaller fish but Pea again hooked into another nice snap around 50cm. He was doing well on some good fish while I kept the smaller models busy. There were a few Kings following snaps up and also we lost 3-4 sabiki hooks to them until one decided to pass on the little berley bits and grab Peas livey.
It was only a little ratty which then got hammered by a bronzie. After a fun few hours and a bit of crying due to big work ups near by that was out of our reach due to the 20-25knt wind that was now blowing we decided to call it a day. It was a pretty awesome day and I do love seeing Pea hooking up into some good fish - don't get me wrong I would love to of hooked a couple of better mods myself but I do love seeing my fellow fisho's I fish with hook up and have a blast of a day.
With Pea's 50 and 60 odd cm snap in the bin with 6-7 others from 35-45cm we had plenty of meat for us so we fired up the little FC and made our way back in.
An awesome Reel Kiwi Fishing adventure with a mate and a few nice fish in the bin - what more could you ask for 👍🙂

Nice boat man. How much would a boat like this roughly cost?

      Hi m a
Prices have just gone up and due to the long build waiting time if buying new 2nd hand ones can be expensive and get scooped up very quick . I think new just a standard package is roughly 23k then as you add to it the price goes up. 2nd hand you maybe lucky around 15k depending age and what specs it has etc.

      Hi J
I now use a little Okuma ITX 3000 that I'm really enjoying, have used the Helios and occasionally my little avenger 4000 (more a strayline reel) but so far loving the little ITX...

Just interesting to see what people use.
I'm a novice but we do more soft baiting than anything.
      Great fun in the shallows!

      Hi J
Still have it and has been sitting on the front lawn for awhile now with the little boat taking priority - the little fc is easier in every way. Will need to get her out for a run soon...

@@Reel-Kiwi-Fishing sorry for being nosey but the first vid I watched of yours was your walk around of the Osphrey.
      Pretty legit boat.
We went from a cuddy hull to walk around.
Me and the missus like our soft baiting.
      Just greenhorns though.
I see what you mean with your little boat and easier and convenient to use.
Love the livebait well and wide sides on those FCs.
Ours is a 4.4m alloy Iconic with alloy trailer which is just enough for us easy to clean and maintain.

@@J67844 The Osprey boats are pretty special and built so well - I'm looking at maybe selling and down size to a 520 center console but finding it hard to sell her as just love it and it took me a long time to get there. The 520 will be just as magic I think but it quite hard buying a boat unseen but the boys we awesome to deal with.
The little fc and your boat are ideal for softbaiting - I don't do a lot of it myself only when the conditions and timing is right is when I fish the softies...

@@Reel-Kiwi-Fishing I reckon you've got the best of both worlds with your two rigs bro...one for the quick dash out on your own, easy to manage and quick to clean up and the bigger setup for the bigger missions where the shelterr of a cabin and canopy comes in to its own. I've looked at a little FC like yours for those exact reasons but the misses isnt signing off on it. Its is a lot more work getting the big boat out but bloody awesome once your on the water.
