  • I just installed front Sumo Springs and. Bilstein Steering Stabilizer on my 32 foot long 2018 Class C RV.
I purchased the Sumo Springs from Amazon:
This isn’t a step by step install vehicle, however, I wanted people to see what the Bilstein steering stabilizer looks like. There were a lot of vehicles showing the Safe -T-Plus and the Roadmaster steering stabilizers, but I saw nothing showing the Bilstein.
The Bilstein was very easy to install since you use the Ford mounts which makes it a one-for-one swap.
As you can see from the video... the Ford steering stabilizer was worn out and useless.
I saw reduction in sway and porpoising from the Sumo Springs as well as improvement in stability and turns at high and low speeds... however... the addition of the Bilstein steering stabilizer took everything to the next level.
I really think that if you own a Class C and you are having a difficult time with driving in high winds or with semi trucks passing you, you should make these two simple modifications. You will not believe the difference they make.
During a brief drive on a two lane highway (one direction each way) a semi drove past me and I barely moved. In addition, it was a little windy, the types of winds that normally cause me some pause I barely noticed them.
In addition, by steering wheel was so stable and firm feeling. It did not feel like I was driving a boat while trying to steer my RV, it felt like I was driving my 06 Honda Ridgeline!!!

What you replaced is a dampener, not a preloaded shock absorber. It is designed to dampen movement in both directions.

& it was still functioning. Not like a Bilstein tho

Done this same mod to my 98 E350 passenger used the blue 500lb sumosprings, bilstein stabilizer bought all ford parts to add it.
    Bilstein comfort series shocks.
    Added a rear swaybar
Converted to 2010 radius arms replaced all bushings, springs and ball joints.
Will be doing the same to a 2006 shuttle bus.
One additional mod, rear spring shackle flip.
The rear shackles are the same as 98 and older F series. With the spring and shackle above the frame mount it puts the spring in compression.
A company I think it's sky manufacturing?makes a frame mount bracket that reverses this, no load capacity loss and smooths out the ride. It does lift the rear, there is a 2 inch and 4.5 inch kit.

I installed both last year & saw a improvement in driving wandering. The sumo springs on front really reduced the big bumps making them a lot softer! Good luck.

I am sorry, I don’t have a part number, but I actually ordered the steering dampener from AutoZone.
I just ordered a Bilstein Steering dampener for a Ford E450 chassis.
I actually no longer own the coach, I sold it last year. However, the coach’s handling helped me to sell it.
The gentleman I sold it to had a big smile on his face as he drove it, he said it actually rode better than his heavy duty Chevy Truck!
He was going from a Toy Hauler bumper tow to a motor home. It was a win win for both of us.

If you don't mind - how much did you pay for the installation or did you do it yourself? 👍

And the air bags would help in the contort of the drive, bit will fight with the sway bar too.

Hi I have a 2019 and when I pull my 30 foot trailer every car that drives by me pulls my truck and semi's are worse. I have a anti sway hitch and it doesn't help much. Did this help you?

Hi, thanks for sharing the information. Have you had a chance to drive it yet to determine if it makes much of a difference with the Bilstein stabilizer? I'm thinking about the same upgrade in my E350 motorhome and am also planning on adding air bags for the back suspension.

      @06ridgelineowner34  Před 4 lety +6

Yes, I drove it on a long 5 hour trip (each way) to Glenwood Springs from Colorado Springs. The change was amazing! The severe sway I would get when a semi-truck or other large vehicle passed me all but went away. The best way I could describe it is before when a semi would pass me it felt like I was getting a violent shove...after the front Sumo Springs and the Bilstein Steering stabilizer what I now feel is more like a gentle nudge. Sometimes I did not even feel the semi-trucks passing me!
Even more impressive was my performance during moderate and high winds...only one time during my entire drive did I get the "Whoah" feeling that caused me to have a death grip on my steering wheel. In addition, low speed handling greatly improved, especially when making turns. In addition, that side to side rocking and swaying from bumps and uneven roads has been greatly reduced as well...and I haven't even upgraded the rear yet!
I am so happy with the effect of these two mods I am going to see if just a rear shock upgrade will help. I was going to go with Bilsteins in the rear (around $119.00 each) and install them myself. But I was quoted around $320.00 to get monomax rear shocks installed at Les Schwab, so I think I am going to go with that.. I hear the Monomax's are stiffer than the Bilsteins and I think stiffer would be better on the rear of my coach.
Also, based on what they say I would go with the SumoSprings over the air bags...they have the same effect and they don't need to be inflated with air.

06 RidgelineOwner Thanks for the detailed reply. I have just received the Bilstein stabilizer, air bags and new rear shocks. I will
install them all asap. I opted for airbags to have a bit more control of the ride.

I was actually installing Bilsteins in the rear… but the heat shield for the exhaust was in the way on the right rear… and I did not have what I needed to remove the rear tire… I am actually considering Monomax shocks in the rear. Can get them installed for $400.00.
