Wow that's a quick follow up
In the last few years That Ferrari has probably gone further on trailers than it has on the road lol
For sure! ;)
I love how Jared was a let's say shy mechanic that absolutely learned buy heart the 2jz and then he made his appearance in a tavarish series and from that day he gave him this chanel so he could become the absolute fan favorite of the sweetest most calming mechanic in CZcams this guy deserves every bit of love and here is a heart for him♥️
A Porsche and Ferrari in the garage. Jared moving up in the world ❤
Yes, like the old joke, how can you tell a rich Georgia guy from a poor one? The rich one has more than one car sitting on blocks in the yard.
So is his Cost of Living! 💰
Hey, only my Tesla is on blocks! Everything else rolls
Ferrari is wizards
@@rhys6990 ferrari was sold to jared several months ago
Can't wait to see what's installed for the Porsche. PLEASE do not put a LS or any other engine in that(I'm convinced if you do Ferdinand Porsche might start haunting the QG). Build it with "racing" or performance internals and parts and turn it into a Porsche GT3 RS killer. Like someone you know that owns a purple one now😉😆. Keep up the good content buddy. Really love your content. From Cape Town, South Africa
The scratching noise was the STARTER! It’s going bad!
I’ve owned quite a few of these. Silly.
I have to say. your editing is so great and current that it really feels current and appealing to watch.
Thanks Ryan! I appreciate you kind words. Thanks! -Duane the Editor
The IMS bearing is at the other end - have to remove the transmission to see the cover.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who has a full blown conversation with myself when I'm puzzling a problem out.
Also, the oil drip from the engine at the end when Jared was talking after seeing the snapped timing chain was kind of appropriate.
I click at once I see you have uploaded! From Denmark and a mechanic. We unfortunately have no way near the opertunaties you have or options 🙄 so loving to watch you go at it!❤
It’s not questionable rather it’s adventurous! Good on you for taking a chance and branching out. Looking forward to seeing the final product.
Watching you pull that beast of a motor, I [somewhat fondly] recall the utter simplicity of the 1300cc motors that preceded it. Disconnect 3 bits of shroud, the gas, throttle cable and electrical leads for the choke and coil, disconnect the heat ducts, jack up the rear end, disconnect the 4 bolts holding the motor to the transaxle and drop it. Of course, it also made 36 HP...
This is the first time I’ve ever seen a double roller timing chain broken. Ive seen them stretched from milage, but not straight up snapped.
In 18 years in a shop i never saw one snapped like that either. And i e seen some pretty ugly timing issues.
That is wild….l😮😮😮😮😮😮
I know the why now, and it’s still pretty insane! Next episode we tear the engine down completely and found something surprising, and not just the CZcams title surprising, the mechanic real life surprising
@@TheQuestionableGarage cant wait keep up the hard work brother.
I expect the chain did not just snap. It was probably the victim of something else going locking up first.
Love the videos, bud! I would set the camera focus to manual. It chases your hands around and shifts the focus constantly.
You should be his probono camera person.
Keep up the good work we all support you in one way or another
Jarod your commentary is undoubtedly in my opinion the most well spoken. Your video editing is spot on. I am really enjoying this video. I would’ve thrown wrenches. pulling that motor. I hope the motor is savable. However, if it was not seen many LS swapped. How difficult would it be to be original with a coyote?
Wow, thank you! The coyote engine is huge compared to the ls and original flat 6, not sure it could make it in!
LS swaps get tight, and I don't know of any that kept the 4wd intact. A Coyote swap would be impossible. They are WAY too big to fit.
Hello again, Jared
Thank you for another Great Video 👍 I'm looking forward to seeing more content from your channel 😀 Again thank you
@@TheQuestionableGarage Flat six Subaru EJ 30; boxer engine, water cooled, easy parts, 300 + hp easy with an NA motor. It is a 600 cc's smaller but a little "secret sauce" could liven it up. I think some factory versions were turbo charged too boot.
Hey Jared. Porsche’s are really special. Keep on wrenching.
Thanks Jared for making me smile and laugh on everyone of your videos!
Since you are this far. Look for cracked heads. It is very common with the bearing failure. Also for fun. Look up 911 K24 swap. :)
I’m so impressed with Jared’s skills. He is probably doing this faster then a lot of Porsche mechanics tbh.
Someone really messed up the replacement of that timing set. Those are reliable engines.
Please no LS swap. I’m a big Porsche fan and I would love to see this be put back to its original glory!
Glory? Im not sure thats the correct word. Maybe another G word like Garbage for instance....Das auto ya!
@@mikeysbago-meat7967 Why?
@@izno73 German autos just arent exactly know for reliability is what im saying.. like this particular engine and intermediate shaft failures well under a hundred thousand miles. Or the cylinder wall scoring.. or BMW making ROD BEARINGS a REGULAR SERVICE ITEM @ 20k miles.. when they work they work great but they dont tend to work for very long and are $$$$$ to repair. Thats my point.. just my opinion tho. But im sure im not alone. But if you got the $$ then more power to you.. enjoy das auto ya!
@ harismic i agree with you a 200 percent
@@mikeysbago-meat7967strangely where I live German cars are renowned for being reliable, and American cars are the unreliable junk ones. Maybe it’s just mechanics here have more experience maintaining them than US cars.
Can't wait to see the rest... Thanks Jared ✌️
THANK YOU JARRED!!!!!!!! 🙂🙂🙂 VERY HAPPY TO HEAR THAT 308 RUN WITH YOUR CUSTOM DESIGNED BY YOU! fuel injection system!!! awesome work sir!!!👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍 many many thumbs up!!
Absolutely commendable to tackle these jobs!! I learn every time on how to approach and just appreciate the engineering into motors!! Thoroughly enjoy the content. Keep it coming. ML&R.
I feel for ya. I flip cars as a hobby. The bulk of my experience is with GM minus a five year stint at a Porsche/Audi/VW/Jaguar dealership as a Porsche tech. I picked up a 2000 Subaru WRX for 500 bucks that was a "get it out of my yard, I'm tired of looking at it" kind of deal that I knew nothing about. That @#% car has thrown me more curveballs than anything I've ever worked on. I now know more about the EJ205 than I ever thought I would.
Watching you start on a new technology is fun! I always wanted to work on a cheap Porsche! Now I can watch! THX
Honestly I would LS swap it. It's probably heck of a lot cheaper and jared you can used all the factory gauges and everything. I believe you can get everything plug and play. I know Jr garage did his and all factory stuff in the car work.
Good luck with the rebuilt Jared! I know flat 6 engine parts are rare as hen's teeth, I wouldn't blame you for LS swapping it.
Have faith. It’s still a Porsche. When you repair the engine you can upgrade, replace what will make the motor a whole lot more reliable! Can’t wait to see more!
There's a legendary thread on Pistonheads by poppopbangbang and his 996 C4S. So beautifully maintained.
Jerad,
Thank you for starting it up. I literally searched for Part Deuce and got disappointed. Thanks!
Dyno day is tomorrow! It’s video is coming up soon! Had to get it coordinated with the dyno shop!
Cmon J& J auto wrecking supply an engine be a sponsor
So expensive with so many risks good vid jarred always informative and questionable lol keep up the good work
Love how you're taking on this project with such passion and enthusiasm!
I remember when I could remove the engine from my 1966 911 in about 15 minutes with nothing more than jackstands, a floor jack, a socket set and a couple of end wrenches. Two engine mount bolts, two transmission mount bolts, one bolt for the shift linkage, one fuel line, about three wires, the big hose from the oil tank, then drop the jack and roll the engine out from under the car. That two liter flat six put out a mighty 130 horsepower, and you got to choose between holes in pistons if you ran hot enough spark plugs to keep from oil fouling, or frequently fouled plugs. I tried both methods.
😂. Love the look on your face when you was looking and flicking the timing chain. I watched it 3 times. 😂 😳
I swear the Subaru ez30r flat 6 is just a Porsche engine made reliable and cheap to maintain the look pretty similar .
I would love to own an ez30 Subaru powered Porsche 996
Based on the engine teardowns Eric on the I Do Cars channel does, there's two levels of German. There's the positive kind where it's thoughtfully designed and relatively easy to figure out, like the venerable air-cooled VWs and Porsches. And for everything else (modern VW/Audi, BMW and Mercedes) the engineers are seemingly locked into a contest to make everything as clever as possible with no regards to any kind of practicality.
Even that can be forgiven in my opinion if they at least build a durable engine by using quality components.
Modern BMW engines are being built with as much plastic as humanly possible and plastic that goes through constant heat and stress cycles breaks, you don't have to be an engineer to be able to figure that one out. The VW/Audi group isn't far behind BMW and even "good old" Mercedes, a brand that used to boast that they used at least 6 bolts where others used "only" 4 bolts, has succumbed to the "make it as light and fallible as possible while still getting it through the warranty period" hype that's been driven by ever greedier manufacturers.
Cool new coffee table you've got there, Jared.
I've done a lot of questionable stuff, I've worked on a LOT of different vehicle engines, but never a Porsche. Thanks for the tutorial, looking forward to the next episode!
Thanks for watching!
EJ25 swap it? Would in theory be an easier swap, and it would be like the build Mighty Car Mods did with Daisy. A old school VW beetle and EJ25 swapped it. It was a MONSTER! Maybe the Porsche could have the same swap done? It would be awesome to see. Never saw a Porsche EJ swapped before.
I’m glad your recording this. Id be completely lost.
Glad to finally see/hear the Ferrari run and look forward to the tuning and hopefully a dyno run.
Yes, you made the right choice buying the Poorsche as the body and trans are worth what you paid as a "roller".
Yes, you should LS swap it with a Vortec SC and come away way happier with the end result and the $$ you can make if you flip it as long as all is done well and sorted. Renegade Hybrids comes to mind. Just my humble opinion. Good luck as a repair/rebuild of that engine, if even possible, will cost you big $$.
Screech after cranking is most likely the starter on its way out.
Damn , I think you killed it on start up🤦♂️
Wow - I've seen a lot of badly stretched chains, and far-far-FAR too many broken timing chain tensioners... But I've never seen a chain broken and bunched up the cam gears like that before... Hopefully the motor is in better shape then the gut wrenching felling I've got in my stomach upon seeing that...
Looking forward to seeing the fully tuned Ferrari in due time, I'm sure (Mrs.) Wizard is looking forward to taking it out for a cruise. I'll admit, Holley EFI wasn't the first system that jumped into my mind - just never seen Holley outside the usual American V8's (well, the odd American 6's here and there - but nothing really beyond those applications spring to mind). However, I'm glad it's installed and working. I do hope this will lead to more opportunities to see Holley EFI pop up more often, esp. in less traditional applications. 🙂
i vote for putting the Porsche engine back in with a cam and dual carbs!
fixing broken cars isn't questionable, it's responsible
Even if he gets another engine, with the Porsche prices currently, he should be able to sell the 996 for at least 25k (of course after some clean and paint correction). There’s at least 8-10k profit there.
That is cool, I am excited to see what you do.
I appreciate the flat 6 and would not be disappointed with a GM small block of your choosing. Or go insane with a big block.
Whoa that engine is huge 😲
I heard that some are outside the engine and some ims bearings need the engine case to be split to get at it.
LS swap it, if the engine is toast. The wizard could guide you along the way, he's already had the experience under his belt with Hoovie's Apollo 911.
Great video! I love how you approach this stuff! If you ever need help around the Stuttgart area, let me know. 👍
The 308 is such a classic beauty!😍😍😍 Resto mod with a modern engine would make it awesome... ☺
Does anyone else notice yourself tapping your foot to the Timelapse music? 😎
Very entertaining program, welcome to Utube, thanks to Derek, best wishes and good luck.
I’m so excited for this! This Porsche is sweet! Keep up the amazing work Jared!
Thanks a ton!
Damn Jared,
I am truly impressed with you removing that engine from the Porsche. Most excellent I never thought you would’ve been able to do it! Anyway, I am really impressed!🎉🎉😅😅
Good video mate, as long as that gearbox is fine, that alone should cover most of the outlay on this car. That's if you have to part it out, I really don't expect you to do it though.
Looking forward to the next episode.
That was a cool start to the video!! I know the porsche is extra broken but its so cool!
Great job getting the engine out !!
Enjoying this Jared!
This is gonna be awesome. Hopefully you rebuild the Porsche engine, I would think that would be how to get the most value out of the car. Look forward to seeing how this turns out!
IMS is at the bellhousing end. The bearing by the FEAD is oil fed and is nearly bulletproof.
From hearing it started I knew the chains were gone. Hopefully you didn't murder the heads. And you'll be able to rebuild this motor. But I would do a full tear down and rebuild.
As Jared mentioned, the damage to the engine was probably already done by the shop that had the car before him, trying to figure out what was wrong.
👍great job on the 308 ! Good luck on the Porsche 😂
Thanks 👍
I love the "Robin-1" Plates on the Ferrari. Nice easter egg.
The packaging is insane. The engineering is impressive.
If you have it that far apart do the bearing regardless
I love my 996.. Can't wait to see next video !! Keep us notified~~ HooAH ! and Yes buy a Porsche~~
That broken timing chain is a rare accourance.. WOW !!
you could squeeze a turbo 1uz in there
Thanks for starting the Ferrari up. Between David and yourself the thing should end up sounding like a sewing machine. "Staccato", as the Car Wizard would say.
At what point does a questionable decision become a stupid decision ? Fun watching though .
He says "not a small person" under the husky branded air compressor... 1:50
Always learning one way or the other. That valvetrain would make great table art if nothing else. Happy to hear the 308 start (if you sat on the ground next to it would it look like you fit from the other side? asking because I loved Magnum's but always suspected I would have to look over the windshield to drive like him) any news on the IS F fix? I hope the Porsche works out for you. Maybe you could be the first to swap in a lexus v8 into it to aggravate all the purists in both camps! At least your garage is half way towards the "justifying a higher education" poster now.
Deustche Jared? That is some news!
If you decide to go with LS swap Renegade Hybrids out of Vegas will have what you need. They can even use all the factory gauges.
Mrs Wizards car is coming along nicely. She will be so happy when it is finished.
Jared I am not very far from you I would love to wrench on the car with you at no expense of yours. I did a complete repair of a 996 it’s pretty tricky and fun at the same time if your interested I could send you some of my pictures of the before and after work. Put a stage two clutch on mine and clutch system was replaced also I did a bearing replacement with the upgraded bearings.
Excited for this one!!
I’ve been around a few Porsche engines and this is the 1st broken timing chain I’ve seen.
You should put an ls or Maserati motor in it if that one isn't salvageable which doesn't look like it.
Following.....good stuff > just don't allow PigPen to be in charge of clean-up.
Seriously....in this case time may prove to be a good friend as these cars can prove to actually be decent investments...esp for those who know what they're doing.
Thx for sharing 👍
Maybe take a look at the pistons with the bore scope.
Big OOF on the double roller breaking.😢
I can hear that Porsche saying, "oh, hell no, you ain't putting no broomstick anywhere near my backside." In Rabbits [VinWiki] voice, "she's a classy one ain't she."
Looking forward to this one!
You’re from Stuttgart…? :O im actually watching from RIGHT here :D
Jarred!,, ive found you. Been a while... Missed you on the T channel.
The timing chain broke 😲
Hey Jared. If you go the LS route, please learn from Tyler Hoover's mistake, and give it a dry sump. You will blow it up if you don't 😁
Just no, don't LS swap, any hillbilly can LS swap a lawnmower if they wanted to. I googled it, it's literally been done. More than once. If anything, throw a 2J in that SOB, or go full Frankenstein and put a rotary in it. Worlds first 6 rotor Porsche, or some such, opens the gate to a future collab with Rob Dahm or some such, far more entertaining that watching the 78 millionth LS swap into something it wasn't meant to go into....
@@MaverickBlue42 Agreed. LS swapping everything is so boring and crude. Total lack of imagination. I just wait for the first LS swapped Chiron or Murcielago. Master class in How to turn a fine machine into a tractor.
Love the Robin 1 number plate. :D
Perfect candidate for a 20b swap🎉
I love how when he said Tony and I knew who he was talking about and why he mentioned him. 😊
The condition of the engine will probably determine if the Porsche will be a runner or a parts car. The body and interior are in decent shape, and even if the engine is trash, the manual gearbox should be worth something, so lot of parts to pick from. If it wasn't a flip car I might have suggested that it be combined with the Tesla from a previous episode and made into an EV but I don't know if the result will have any resale value or not.
I knew mechanic who told me not to get a porsche, so I bought a corvette instead. He said it was the only time he would see men cry over the amount of the repair.
If you want to build another engine in it, think of a K24, possibly with a turbo, that won't be done much yet, I don't know them anyway. An LS has been done so many times before.
Well at least you weren't responsible for the damage since it made the noise the second you started it. If these engines are so problematic I's say it's time for a swap, if it can't be made more reliable.
I'm always amazed when people just whip out engines of cars like it's a no big deal
