  • Friends, in the Book of Revelation, Jesus says, “Listen! I am standing at the door, knocking; if you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in to you and eat with you and you with me.” But how does this work? How do we allow him into our hearts?
That’s what Brandon Vogt and I discuss in today’s episode of “The Word on Fire Show.”
A listener asks, what do you think about the series, “The Chosen”?

Bishop Barron's videos are all easy to understand....our life needs to be simple and not complicated. Being a Christian is easy. In the Carmelite spirituality, it's about self knowledge (who we are in God, in Genesis, etc.) and self acceptance (what God wants for us, what Jesus offered for us, etc.)...and our goal which is eternal life, heaven NOT only this life on earth. Thank you Word on Fire for all you do.

My perspective on this is: that how we go about allowing Christ into our hearts is to not think of it in terms of Him knocking on our door because "He wants mastery-and lordship-over every aspect of our lives" But instead, us knocking on His door because we’ve decided peace, love, and mercy, are valuable and are worth living by. The former statement phrases it as compromising our life to a domineering force. While the latter statement puts the choice in our hands, and provides a motive-a reason why. We Look out for what’s in our best interest better than we obey for the sake of obeying.

Origen of Alexandria sought allegories in Genesis, but he still took it literally. Barron claimed he didn’t.
“As we begin to speak about the ark which was constructed by Noah at God’s command, let us see first of all what is related about it literally, and proposing the questions which many are in the habit of presenting, let us search out also their solution from the traditions which have been handed down to us by the forefathers. When we have laid foundations of this kind, we can ascend from the historical account to the mystical and allegorical understanding …”

@@stanleyezeogu9816 Barron squirms around something that is considered a mortal sin so he doesn't hurt somebody's feelings. Thus, he gives a weak answer regarding something considered abominable in the Bible because he wants to please someone rather than reveal the cold, hard truths regarding the Catholic position. As a result, he gives him the impression that such acts are OK when they are clearly not OK since they are grave sins that send one on the road to perdition.
"But as we were approved by God that the gospel should be committed to us: even so we speak, not as pleasing men, but God, who proveth our hearts."

I provided you some verses regarding the Bible's position on same-sex attraction. Are you going to tell me that God approves of masturbation and porn? Not only are those things unnatural sex acts but they clearly indicate being covetous. Yes, Barron doesn't give the impression that he endorses such self-gratifying practices. Nevertheless, the fact that a so-called archbishop just brushes these shameful acts off and basically says, "Well, it's not the best way to act, but it's no biggie" is quite astonishing. If you see no issue with that, well, you should seriously consider Matthew 15:14:
"Let them alone: they are blind, and leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both will fall into the pit."

@@lufhopespeacefully2037 OK, thanks for your polite response. I would love to do everything in my power to convert you to Catholicism (not the current Vatican II version, which contradicts nearly 2,000 years of Catholic teaching), but, I won't try to twist your arm (unless you are enlightened by it - if so, I would be happy to give you some pointers).
Anyway, as Catholics, we are to believe in one God, three persons. Thus, the Trinity. Sounds complicated, but we believe that each of the three persons is divine and as a trio, they also are divine (the same divinity - each individual's divinity does not surpass the whole and the whole doesn't surpass each individual's divinity).
As far as the ancient Egyptians go, we, as Catholics believe (and know from historical accounts) that whatever they believed were from pagan gods. Yes, Jesus and the Holy Ghost aren't mentioned specifically until the New Testament (of the Bible), but we are to believe that like God the Father, they always existed. Jesus was begotten of the Father and the Holy Ghost proceeded from the Father and the Son. For example ...
"And he said: Behold Adam is become as one of us, knowing good and evil: now, therefore, lest perhaps he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever."
      - Genesis 3:22
This obviously took place shortly after the creation account where Adam and Eve put the rest of mankind into the state of original sin. Notice how God said "become one of us." I think it's safe to say that He was referring to the other members of the Trinity.
Here's another example in the New Testament ...
"Jesus said to them: 'Amen, amen I say to you, before Abraham was made, I am.'"
      - John 8:58
Even though Christ was born as a child and God/man of the Virgin Mary several millenniums after Adam and Eve, His presence as God (not man) had always existed. Anyway, that's how I get my theology.
Again, I fear your religion of Islam is leading you in a horribly wrong direction, but I don't want to cause a stir. Just like Adam and Eve, we all have free will (for better or worse). I won't violate that
Thank you again for being professional and I would be happy to continue this conversation if you're willing.

Barron claims that the universe is an “icon of God.” Scripture, St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas reject the idea that the universe is an image of God.
“Whether the image of God is to be found in irrational creatures? Objection 1. It would seem that the image of God is to be found in irrational creatures … [St. Thomas Aquinas answers] On the contrary, Augustine says (Gen. ad lit. vi 12): Man’s excellence consists in the fact that God made him to His own image by giving him an intellectual soul, which raises him above the beasts of the field. Therefore, things without intellect are not made to God’s image.”

The Council of Trent claimed that John 3:5 is dogmatic: “Amen, amen I say to thee, unless a man be born again of water and the Holy Ghost, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.”
“If anyone saith, that true and natural water is not of necessity for baptism, and, on that account, wrests to some sort of metaphor, those words of our Lord Jesus Christ; Unless a man be born again of water and the Holy Ghost, let him be anathema.”
      - The Council of Trent, Session Seven, On Baptism, Canon II

Not everything that God wills to give you is 'desirable' or sought after. We must learn to love his wounds, to embrace the crosses he gives us. Which is so difficult, but that ugliness that so often repels others is most beautiful to him when we bring such sacrifices to our Eucharistic union.

The wound was not taken, I endured it, but He never left me.

He comes to me personally every week in the Eucharist, giving me His Body and His Blood and encounter Him one on one. He just can't leave me alone. And I cried so much that time He was washing my feet. He made the sun the moon and the stars yet He knelt down to wash my feet....and gave me His everything.

One of the best thing about the word "Dominus" in this discussion is the fact that in Latin, this word derives from the position of the Master as Lord of his "Domus"-his own house. A dominus in your metaphorical house VERY MUCH BELONGS THERE. Whereas κὐριος essentially denotes the one who has supremacy, there's an intimacy to a dominus that's very attractive in certain aspects of Christ's lordship.

That’s a tough one: As I am aging, I tend more towards the side of a Christian practice proportional to my health versus my health willfully consented to Christ’s Lordship as an integral part of that practice and its deeper intention. Yet, I know in faith of no safer Lordship to entrust my health to. I pray Mary, whom I trust implicitly, to help me totally surrender to God’s will not as a passive passenger but an active contributor.

There are just too many difficulties with language to grasp this mystery, without falling into power analogies that are simply mistaken . I love the dialogue between you both and "most" of the discussion, but I am grateful that eventually it is made clear that it is the power of Love, God's Love for us that is the essence of this discussion.

To say mastery and lordship of every moment and everything in your life: I think this is best explained as Sanctification, and the offering of the bread and wine to transubstantiate into His body and blood.
How does everywhere we go , dwell, and hold to follow this? Think: the relics of the Saints. This helps to the advantageous place of the soul. In fullness of grace.
    Let's make a distinction:
The devil and demons posses and try to dominate. The act is to control. To take away freewill and sever the life and soul of a person to slavery. Which can be either in pleasure or suffering. Or both. The devil and demons know this: tarot cards, fortune telling, etc.
Christ takes dominion in order to free souls from this. He gives the soul the fullness of grace and charity. Our Lady as the Immaculate Conception signifies this. Christ grants us a greater participation in the Liturgy by doing this in particular (the Sacraments.). Essentially, giving everything to Christ brings everything to its' paramount good, and best expression. He refines. He aides and helps. He does not take over and dictates. He does not perverse, abuse, and deceive, nor seduce. Nor turn the soul into and onto themself.
Imagine when Christ was a child, and Saint Joseph showing Him how to do woodworking. Saint Joseph helps Christ learn carpentry and get good at it. Christ sanctifies Saint Joseph's work. Even under the humility as a child.
Christ is not the devil, and does not come to dominate as demons do. His dominion is simply the author and creator with His Father, and the Holy Spirit. But, He does not take away nor seduce freewill as the devil does, and did.
Also, when in the powerless hand of sin, hell, demon, flesh, and devil, Christ is there to hold us up, help us, and heal us. And he doesn't do it to get something out of us, but to give in pure and perfect charity as God's well and beloved son: do all that he tells you.
