Fascinating! Fabulous history on so many levels! I really appreciate how you reported on how theories regarding these stone circles have changed over time. Yet, there are still so many mysteries! I'm planning a trip to Scotland and thrilled with the path I've chosen to explore. My itinerary for this upcoming trip doesn't include Aberdeenshire THIS time, but it certainly will NEXT time! And in the meantime, I'll be doing more research! Thanks so much! Very nicely done!

Really interesting. I especially enjoyed your insight into the theory of the circles as funerary sites. I’ve wondered myself whether the purpose was for dispersal or burial of cremated remains, so the idea of sites for funeral pyres makes perfect sense. Perhaps they even operated as platforms for excarnation . I grew up in the area around Inverurie , not realising until later in life how unique and valuable these sites are. Can’t wait to get back there and take another look. Thanks for the inspiration, truly fascinating.

With such a local approach, you will never know the secrets of menhirs, ancient signs, symbols throughout Scotland and England.
You need to get acquainted with the scientific works of M. Aksakov, he was engaged in the study of ancient artifacts in Ingushetia (North Caucasus), there are many menhirs, signs, symbols that are analogies with artifacts Scotland , England, Europe.
thank you for a great video, the stomes are awe inspiring. why though, do the theories have to be mutually exclusive? perhaps the living were not supposed to be making observations from within the circles but without the stones? Why not use other stones in the circle for 0bservations of locally important community dates and who better to assure the continuation of the cycles than the ancestors residing within the stones? many societies live with their deceased very close by, as protection and for access to the ancestral intelligence for many things. Plants are naturally tuned to the seasons, some gardeners still plant/harvest when the moon is in a certain phase or when other plants are at a certain stage of budding out. We cannot see the plant signs any longer associated with what the heavenly bodies of the time were doing, but it seems unlikely that the stones stood so far apart from the rest of the contemporary environment. the same may go for breeding animals and fish runs in the rivers/streams or bird migrations. perhaps it is not that they are a strange feature of the environment as an enduring calendar accessible to all, but that we are so estranged from the environment.

Thank you for a very interesting, clear, and beautifully filmed documentary. However, I am not convinced by the view that these circles were constructed solely for funerary purposes. If the recumbent stone at Tomnaverie was "strengthened" prior to the erection of the cairn, is this conclusive proof that the circle and cairn were built as one continuous and contiguous project in time? The stone might have already been in place, and subsequently strengthened by the (later) builders of the cairn. In addition, not all circles have been shown to have had cairns within them, or contain evidence of burials.
On the subject of archeo-astronomy (which is now a recognised discipline at one university), the orientation of most recumbent settings is inconsistent with the midwinter sunset. Tomnaverie has perhaps the most westerly orientation (at about 225 degrees) and I agree could be solar, but nearly every other recumbent in Grampian is aligned either more to the SSW, south, or even SSE - which are more likely to indicate lunar sightings.
There are to my knowledge only two possible midsummer sunrise alignments (at Loanhead of Daviot, and South Esslie), and these are not from the inside of the recumbent setting but from stone to circle in one case, and circle to circle in the other (Thom, 1967). So, alignments to sunrise and sunset at the midsummer and midwinter solstices is not a viable proposition for any but a few sites.
Although I appreciate your method and approach, I think it is too early in our investigation of these marvellous monuments to settle on the theory that they were quite basic, symbolic statements commemorating the dead.
Why do all amateurs put loud unsuitable music under the narration in their videos? It always distracts and here renders a potentially interesting video unwatchable.
