    Dear Darko,
THANK YOU. You began with small steps and now you are offering a serious, insightful & very enjoyable approach to hifi/high end...whatever. Your column and these videos really are an oasis in such overloaded media. Have played yesterday twice the Hegel H590 video and now this....This video is very clever and answers all the questions that may appear for this set of speakers. I thought you could read my mind, especially when you installed the LSXs to your office. Wish you the best and keep on surprising us!

Wow. I know virtually nothing about audio but I must say I was captivated by your presentation. The absence of a background soundtrack, visual splash and dash, electronica heart-thumping and whatever other pizzazz is SO refreshing you have no idea. Thank you for that, and for a superb review conveyed with honesty and even-handedness. I will be watching one or two more times; there is a lot for my little mind to absorb and all of it important. Well done; many other presenters would do well IMHO to borrow a page...(Going out on a limb here: would the NAD D 3020 V2 enhance this setup at all or would it be superfluous?)

Nicely reviewed John. I’m not a hi-fi techno by any measure but I do enjoy good sound. I’ve recently rehoused a pair of Kef 104ab speakers into lighter, and smaller, cabinets and they’re just so powerful and accurate, despite the passive bass speaker now mounted on the rear side. I bought the speaker panels as a kit set in the early ‘70s and over the past 40+ years they’ve been matched to various low power amps (20 to 35 Watts) and proven to be reliable, versatile and high quality. Still have the original spare fuses.

thanks for the review. two things; 1) thank god KEF is using proprietary wireless between speakers rather than (horrid) bluetooth or wifi. 2) KEF just laid down the best tv/ computer all-in-one speaker.
love that it also uses KEF protocols between the phone and the speakers, as anything is better than bluetooth...which you can still use. and as i only listen lossless, i love the Cat 5 cable.
and if you think i'm crazy on that point, turn bluetooth on vs off (plugged in if you have to) on an ordinary speaker and it will always sound worse.
plus it has a sub out - go and buy an inexpensive sub and really blow your mind.

Thanks to your video, my siblings and I, last Christmas, purchased a set of LSX speakers for my 97 year old dad. The Google Chromecast Audio trick worked great. In addition to the streaming capability it offered, he is able to voice-control his music playback (w/CZcams Premium) using a Google Home Mini attached to a standing-lamp, located next to his comfy-reclining-powered-chair. Due to age limiting restrictions, this is especially important for him, as he is unable to use a smart phone or iPad to navigate apps.
In addition, his 55" TV audio output connects via toslink to a mini-DAC and mini-jumper cable, into the analogue Aux input. Both are being powered with a USB, powering-capable, splitter-cable, directly from the Master speaker's USB power port. All that he needs is to be sure to select the appropriate input on the speakers using the included remote. On the downside, the remote is overly directional and the red text on a black remote doesn't make viewing for the elderly easy. Placing small fluorescent colored stickers on the remote to aid in identifying the buttons to be pressed has helped.
All-in-all, these KEFs are a pleasant Mid-Fi set of speaker that allow for flexible use. They sound smooth, and are relatively detailed, yet there's certainly no excessive sparkle in the treble. They have good dimensionality and dispersion. The mids sound very natural to my ear. The bass is surprisingly full for their size. Not the most dynamic or large-scale sounding......but overall, very nice. My dad loves them.
Oh, and I do have them mounted to a cheap pair of speaker stands (which I must confess, I garbage picked) using the threaded hole in their bottoms.
P.S. - John, your 5% description of sound improvement using the ethernet cable, as opposed to going wireless between the speakers, was spot-on. Damn good observation!
SIDE NOTE: I did need to bring them in for repair. I was getting sputtering sound out of the Slave speaker, but only when using the AUX input on the Master. It sounded almost as though the speaker's driver was blown, but obviously that was not the case.

Stunned by the presence, "Kein Trink Wasser" by Orbital, "Present Tense" by Radiohead, "9:39" by Global Communication, "Late" by Teen Daze, "A Simple Design" By The Juan Maclean, "Kaputt" by Destroyer was the test drive. Side by side (in the livingroom) they sound surprisingly close but the LS50W definitely sounds more pleasing to me. For desk use I found the LSX a bit too intense and almost tiring to listen to. But this has probably more to do with the distance to the wall and how close I am sitting to the speakers, than the LSX themselves.

Firstly I have to say I was always a huge fan of Kef speakers, in theory, starting way back when the Q7 speakers were released, the magazine reviews were always great. So about a year and a half ago I made the jump and purchased the Kef x300a USB pc speakers, cost $1300 AUD. Just 2 or 3 months outside the 1-year warranty the internal power supply started to fail and now give off a horrible high pitch buzz when in standby, I rang Kef but they wouldn't fix them under warranty despite them being $1,300 speakers. I will never buy any Powered Kef speakers again given the experience I have had and I even hesitate in buying other powered speakers and I certainly won't be spending anything like $1,300 on my pc speakers a second time. I am currently considering buying the Edifier S1000DB 2.0 Active Bookshelf Speakers which cost $560 AUD, still a fair bit but they have top recommendations and have a range of input choices, unlike the Kef x300a. BTW, when the speakers are in use, they do sound REALLY NICE, just a pitty with the standby buzz.

Nice video. I already own the KEF LSX speakers, and although using them in a small room, I still felt it necessary to pair them with a subwoofer. I found the Cambridge Audio Minx X301 to be a perfect match. They are fine for streaming services such as Tidal, but I found that when connecting them via the wired input from my Dragonfly Cobalt, the slave speaker would occasionally drop out, so using the ethernet cable became necessary. I also found a small amount of latency when connecting a microphone via a mixer. I now use a pair of Devialet Phantom 1's in direct optical mode which works better for me. I would say though that at the price point, the KEF LSX are great speakers.

I just bought a pair of these from Peter Tyson O/B and they came in absolutely pristine condition. Cannot fault PT - not just in this regard but also their follow up care. I must confess I'm a struggling greatly to like the LSXs. They are VERY artificial-sounding - which perhaps might mean I'm actually an audiophile? I have always been able to tell the difference between Spotify and Tidal and also more recently when I signed up to Qobuz, IMO, find this lacking w.r.t. Tidal (though I still love Spotify for its interface and keep it for my Echo Dot). Have not done actual A/B listening even informally but the sound from the LSXs is so artificial and thin that I can't even tell the difference (with superficial listening) between the various streaming options. I accept it is only 24 hours or so, but all the fiddling I've tried with settings and different input offerings have made only limited differences. I have an old pair of Ruark Talismans coupled with Audiolab 8000S and M-DAC (plus some Chord cables/interconnects were needed to bring out the best of the latter) and though the M-DAC is temporarily in Rip Van Winkle land till they are able to fix it, they hugely outperform the LSXs. Big time. The positives I can say about these are that some older tracks from Wes Montgomery and Miles do have a fresh clean sound - but I am still faced with the terribly artificial sound overall. I can return them of course as PT give excellent follow up care and in fact I bought them open box and so I could sell them on eBay at no loss in principle, but I really cannot understand (no offence as I greatly respect your videos and I mean that in every sense) how you could recommend these (though I have noted the caveats you have offered too). This being said, your attachment suggestion via Chromecast Audio (which I had to buy refurbished as I found none new online any more) and I am using it with the cable that came with my Mojo Accessory pack and it is decent. I have an inexpensive HCMI ARC to optical output bit that I got on Amazon which I will try before giving up. Overall, the sound is very thin, and as I say very artificial. My Audiolab 8000S/Ruark Talisman/Arcam CD92 option was evolved after more than 20 years of desperately seeking hifi on a very small budget. I got these in 1996 in the end and even without the M-DAC which came later they out trump the LSXs by such a margin I cannot even think of an analogy. Worst (or best) of all is that my existing Sony HT-ZF9 + Sub + Rears are more satisfying in an audiophile (?) sense than the LSXs. I bought these because the Sony kit is weak for Digital Concert Hall and other classical music offerings (though all the fun I need for watching video even without the rears) but they are decidedly wanting in almost every department. I still have tremendous respect for you as a reviewer (and an intellectual) and have watched your CZcams clips for quite a while now, but this reco is one that I followed up on and which turned out to be a big mistake on my part. Actually, so did the Audioquest Cobalt, which would just cut out repeatedly with my LCD1s and also didn't have the heart of the Red which I owned for a couple of years till I sold them to get the Cobalt, but in the end this made me listen again to the Mojo and - Very Happy Camper, No Questions Asked. Even managed to get one at £100 off at Peter Tysons who still had some old stock. Hope this comes through as constructive criticism rather than derogatory as it is not intended as such. I rarely encounter someone with your integrity and intelligence and so please bear this in mind while reading this. If I were to hypothesise an Anti-Darko it would be a pathological manipulator like Steve Guttenberg. And that's coming from someone (me) who spent some years in Manhattan and its environs.

Keep on bringing reviews of active systems. I'm very curious about the new Elac Argo B51 and the new active bookshelfs from Goldenear. Finally manufacterers are pointing their arrows in the right direction. Passive is done for in my opinion besides a few exceptions.

Great balanced review. I see they are Roon ready now which is good. Roon is a music glue and I'm so glad it exists. I just wish that there would be some agreement on using a common control software that provided common actions so that these systems could integrate. I guess they don't want that do they?

    • @DarkoAudio
      @DarkoAudio  Před 5 lety

Not to split hairs but they are not strictly Roon Ready as multi room streaming isn't possible. This is a special implementation of Roon coded just for the LSX.

I have the kef lsx. I had great sound but the software is terrible. The volume control lags. The remote does not work properly. Now, my right speaker does not make any sound. Led's are blinking in an unknown error code. My left speaker only works if i keep pressing the 'volume up' button.

Good review. I think this product will be a hit for KEF. If they somehow got Bluesound or Sonos integration watch out, but unlikely since they have invested in their own app ecosystem. However, good hack with the CCA and that could work for whole house. Anyway, I really hope they come out with a passive version since I have a good amp and dac already. If they come out with a passive I'd probably get a pair for my office.

I am in the same set of mind. But Devialet just start a new offer in France. 70 euro/month for 2 devialet reactor 600 and included qobuz Hi-res (which cost 24€/month). Definitly tempted by devialet now.

I have the LS50 powered by a pair of Temple Audio monoblocks, but the LSX form factor would fit in much better with the space available in my room, so had a pair on trial.
Just to say, I expected some loss in acoustic quality with the LSX but the difference was chalk and cheese. Returned the LSX pair.

Wow, what an amazing idea. I've been wanting to get rid of that 3mm thick speaker cable and replace it with two kettle leads and ethernet cable. it'll be so aesthetically pleasing. in fact I might not stop there and run cat5 between the speakers, then maybe add phono through a headphone jack, oh and a minidisk through optical cable. You can see why they call it wireless. Thank god you don't need speaker cable eh?

  • @KeesRomkes

Love this, and it's already the best video on this product - I'm still wondering about the sound quality in the end and - in the new world of audio where I am that man in the middle - how to hook this up in a world where we have so many streaming standards. Airplay 2 has been my 'go to' for now, but I also have sonos here and there around the house...

I must agree with one thing: Chromecast audio via optical out is the best streamer from whatever device you want to stream from: phone, tablet, pc, tv....Even though speaker manufacturers keep making their proprietary apps which include music services, they simply can't touch chromecast simplicity and usability, let alone the fact that you can't stream from pc because the app in only for phone. You can stream from pc through network connection but only stored files on the hard drive, which for me is a thing of the past.So for me all the apps, music services built-in, bluetooth, network.. features that are built-in and that rise the price significantly can be left out.I'll happily buy a 35$ Chromecast instead and have the best streaming capabilities. Well done Google!

this is an exceptionally good video, im looking into spending some money for a sound system, not sure to go for this or a couple of phantom reactors. i move quite a bit between cities each each or so, so i want something compact i can ship or fly when i move and change universities since im taking a double degree then doing an internship in 3 different countries
the phantoms seems like something from the future, you can have them at your house but also a speaker you can take with you to a party with students in a basement somewhere (its was i do mostly) and it will be a mind blower and head turner at the same time, these seem like your everyday speakers, even tho they produce very good sound
stero phantom setup cant be done now yet
but can you please take a look at one reactor and give us your view on it ? mids and high, and how is it overall
i hope your channel grows, since you are so good at videos ! you are on that path since you got 100k views here !

That app volume control puts me off.. I can imagine the volume going all over the place before you got it just right.. should be a big circular dial type with lots of increments so you don’t jump from not quite loud enough to a bit too loud.. getting just the right volume is so important when listening to your music.. I’m surprised that some hi fi makers don’t seem to get this... also I wish instead of describing rooms as small, medium or large reviewers would actually state the size in square feet or meters..( really good video! )
