"Un-" // 1st place poem for the AVBOB Poetry Contest 2021

The poem "Un-" won first place in the AVBOB poetry competition in 2019. It is dedicated to my two brothers who had to support my family when my father left us. I am endlessly grateful for their selflessness but I'm also weary, as I know that the pressure that our society puts on boys in South Africa is uncompromising. I want them, and all men in South Africa, to know that they are loved and that we are willing to bear the burden of fatherlessness with them, as long as they are willing to accept the help. As a nation, we have the power to restructure our society by encouraging our boys to be vulnerable instead of forcing them to be hard and perpetuating toxic masculinity.
