“Where’s the Ferrari!?” - that’s a fair question. Hopefully anyone curious sees this comment.
The plan was to hit the dyno this past Wednesday, but I ran into issues when pressure testing my new intercooler. I had a pinhole leak between the water and air sides… so it’s a bit of a setback. Next week, fingers crossed!
Keep plugging away and ignore the haters. I dig your stuff every week. Can’t wait for the e36 interior video. Will be epic. Super excited.
That and the model A looks like a dilapidated pile of sadness. But I look forward to any of your videos and I do read the little bits you put under your name in the intros
This kind of content is what makes your channel stand out. Not only do you bring us along on amazing builds, but you teach us how we can do it ourselves. Thank you!
No 3 piece elitist gate keeping, just straight knowledge. Awesome content
I really love the look of squared off tires with more sidewall. It would really be a fitting look for the lines of that BMW plus it would be amazing to see you explaining the stylistic differences in sidewall and shoulder of stretched tires vs stiffened sidewalk tires.
I am with you. Was about to say about the same. I am just not a fan at all of a stretched tire.
Yes absolutely
@@willjam465 yeah the wheels on his buddy's car don't 'fit' either. If you have to run stretched tires, yeah the wheels don't fit.
Perhaps you forgot the name of this channel... Crazy negative camber, mexi-flush fitment and performance degrading level of stretch is what the "stance" scene is about...
@@mxrz stance works can do anything they want. Their content is amazing!!!! No shade here.
This is a solid episode. Dropped some knowledge.
Always love a good informational video, especially a good standalone one like this I'm able to go back and reference down the line if needed. Thanks for putting it together Mike!
And sorry to hear about your intercooler pinhole, but I know you'll get it back up and good to go in no time. Wouldn't be a build without some setbacks.
An episode PACKED with wheel knowledge and nerdery. Very cool!
For a channel called StanceWorks, I've wondered why this topic hadn't come up. Good job on building suspense. Well done Sir!
Saved in my files and as always a thumbs up. This was the cleanest explanation of wheel fitment there ever has been. Thanks!
Thanks for this episode Mike. Cleared up some grey areas about wheels for me👍
bolt 'em on and send it!! they look absolutely fantastic
and i 1000% agree with you on the building your own 3 piece wheels, or any 2-3 piece wheels, they are just a level above anything else.
The channel is getting better and better especially as you’re adding more cars to focus on. The 36, the UR-Q, the Fezza and now this e30 project. I’m loving it all❤️🇬🇧
H&r front coilovers for e30 325i are a fantastic setup, I loved mine. Ground control (eibach/koni) setup, ran that setup as well. I think the linear/static rear spring setup really helped with keeping my rear tires from wearing out top fast.
Awesome video as always!! I have been waiting for such a video for a while as I am building a sweet set of BBS RS's for my MK2 and I want to get it right the first time. Thanks for helping me out! Keep up the great content!
Love the E30 stuff.
I have one by my own, also in alpinweiß.
Can't wait to see more of yours.
Greatings from Germany
Michael
Great content, 💯 learned a lot in regards to fitment. This will definitely help a lot when ready to get mine done.
Great video! I've always had a hard time understanding the specifics of 3pc wheels, this helped a lot. A video explaining the different types of lips and etc.. would be awesome too
this was an incredibly helpful video for understanding fitment..ty
Amazing ! Wheels fitment is a confusing thing to me. This video explains a lot and i'm sure i'll go back to it several times ! I would love to learn more about it in a future video.
Definitely do a part 2 with a comparison. Us visual learners will appreciate seeing the original wheel setup and then the new arrangement 👌🏻
Thank you for breaking it down on how to measure and build wheels! Every time someone tries to educate me on this, my Brian goes into overload and just sounds like failed dialup internet… this time not so bad but still confusing but math was never my strong suite but hey - not afraid to admit that haha
I am so happy that I already have found the perfect spec for my next project car :)
Already got the ET and with :)
Good with forums and pictures :)
If I remember correctly, Alpina recommends reworking the rear fenders on pre-facelifted cars when fitting their 16 inch wheels.
Thanks for the best wheel size explanation I’ve seen!
I'm also a huge wheel fan. But i went ahead and convert my hobby to my job. So, now I'm a wheel designer & engineer. Thanks to the Stanceworks, you are one of the most important influensers for me in car culture. You helped me to understand what profession i want to choose.
P.S. And special thanks to Sr. Mike Burroughs ;) He teached me a lot in my profession.
These wheels are beautiful on this project! 👌
Glad this kind of true hands on videos are actually out there, but you have to show the dangers out modifying rims. 😎
Thanks for the explanation, as always a good informative video big fella, Rj in Oz
Awesome video, great explanation all around!
rims or wheels ; loved your take on that. i find it such a silly thing the internet goes crazy over. this was an awesome video. getting wheel fitment is a pain in the ass sometimes. wheels are cheap so its good to know how to size them appropriately. keep up the good work mike cant wait to see the updates on the other cars!
Great episode, very knowledgeable brother
The way you display fusion 360 and even present the models is really cool
Awesome explanations!
Thanks Mike!
Another great video!
Súper cool staff !! Thanks you 🔝💯😍
Great content, thank you so much
Very interesting video, good explanation of all these terms and measurements. I had a rough idea before, but I understand it better now. I like the choice you've made here, I think it'll be great. I'm not a big fan of the rubber band tire look.
fitment is art
Very instructive video, this has always interested me (and confused me). ;-)
I love love love that M1.
Those Alpina wheels are phenomenal!!
Yet another great video! Those wheels are so good!
Discord gang!
Great explanation! 👏🏽👏🏽
I really had no idea how to do this this is good 👍
I love that you're going a little less aggressive. IMO there's nothing more satisfying than mocking up a fit, fully cycling the suspension without springs, and then ordering that wheel/tire and have it fit perfectly. When I measure for these things, I simplify a bit. I typically am running square tires, no stretch. So instead of worrying about wheel widths and dimensions etc, I simplify to tire and offset. I can plug a tire spec into a calculator and get overall width and diameter numbers. You can even mock this up with plywood or cardboard. My biggest W with this was fitting huge 295s (I think?) to a '71 Mach 1 Mustang on a Scwarz performance chassis (which I cannot recommend, turns out they built us this chassis without having actually built a 2nd gen mustang on one lol). Ended up with some whacky negative offsets, but I trusted the numbers, and yes that turned out to be the correct fit with some very expensive forgeline wheels (I had pitched GTR fitment TE37s lol).
Great info.
Those Alpinas are 👌🏻👌🏻
This was awesome, thanks Mike for all the info. I will admit I know very little when it comes to building wheels but really want to try. I would love to know any tips on where to shop for faces. I look on marketplace and eBay but I'm not really sure if that where I will find my best results. Any suggestions would be appreciated or another video on it would be sick.
Always something to learn on this channel. The blood boiling remark was classic CZcams comment section smackdown right there! Nicely done.
I dislike BMW and Ferraris but this has become one of my favorite channels because of you. You explain things in a way that I don't feel stupid or like you think I'm 5 years old. Another of my favorites is m539 restoration with only BMW content 🤯
Useful information, thanks.
Interested to see what size tyres you go with, I'm running some 9x16's with 215/40 on my Opel Manta, which has similar diameter wheels to an E30, but thinking of loosing the stretch for something a bit fatter....
Well Mike, you are 100% correct in calling them Rim halves. As the wheels is only a wheel, when tyre is mounted to the rim. So anyone that gives you slack for that is just a chop
Exciting build!!!! I grew up calling wheels, rims until the internet made me feel like an idiot for it. So thank you for not giving a damn about the name! 😂 RIMS!!
Woooooot got here earlier than i usually do. Instructional video on custom suspension next?
Epic video :D
Very informative! Also nice to see the Model A, Mike you’re going to have to re-do your fuel system…again on that poor thing.
If I may add, always make sure to measure your caliper to wheel clearance with new brake pads.. 😉👍
Knowledge gained
Never been this early to a video! Let's goo
Definitely a fan of a proper chunky tire.
Camber is really the key to fitting wheels that don't really fit. I have 18x9.5" wheels all around on my E34, and the wheels are ET35 so I'm running a 30mm spacer in the front. Without camber, they poke out, but with -2º of camber, they tuck into the fenders quite nicely.
Love a good rim build 😅
He does a fantastic rim job.
i grew up on the east coast going to shows like h20i, waterfest, SOWO, dubs at the gap etc... car meets every wednesday night in a Krispy Kreme parking lot, and being around the wheel/stance game fostered by VWvortex. Ever since I moved to the west coast, I haven't seen any kind of culture like that. I think you might be the only person out here with a proper mentality on wheels. Finding that rare old set of wheels that might be the only set in the country, and building them to make them work... nobody out here seems to want to take the time. I lost count of how many times I took 18 hour road trips to buy or sell a set of 30 year old wheels. I was that kid in high school running around with wheels that cost twice as much as the car.... lol.
Very nice
Great segment! Thanks for sharing this breakdown on the correctly measuring the total width/halves/offset.
I have a set of Work Brombachers that fit my car, but I would like a bit more outer lip. I am running Work Brombacher 18x8.5 +54 on 225/40/18 Michelin PSS & 18x10 +60 on 265/35/18 Michelin PSS ('95 Porsche 993 Narrow Body). I am also running spacers (7mmF & 5mmR) to fill the wheel well, but I have clearance on the brakes to run them without the spacers. Is it an option to swap the outer lips for a slightly deeper look (equal to the thickness of spacers) so I can not run the spacers? I am also assuming I may have to move to a slightly wider tire (235 F & 285 R) to reduce the "stretch" - Thanks
Yes, you can absolutely do that. It might be hard to get lips that are only 5-7mm deeper though.
This would be a case where an fdm 3D printer would be nice. you could 3d print test spacers, caliper mounts, calipers, sections of wheels or entire wheels for fitment. There are some cheap printers that print from 400-500mm cubed . With a big nozzle and running klipper, you could get the prints reasonably quickly.
Excellent choice with the rims. Also I thought you meant listen to that cnc machine going but once you pointed out the boiling blood of the rims vs wheel's purists. Then I could fully hear their blood boiling as they're yelling at the screens.
Looking for RC090 set for my e30 but want them to look like these for the price they want. Great vid
I used to work for Epsilon Wheel corp back in the 80s and your explanation of backspace, offset, bead to bead rim width, etc. were spot on and excellent! Your channel hits so many bases for me. Cool project content, tool tips, workshop techniques, welding tips and on and on. Keep up the great work!
That is a nice rim.
When I asked to listen, I only heard a truck backing up. Your videos get me super motivated to build my cars, but then I work the rest of my 9-5, and I lose all motivation.
Ohhhhh man. Those Aplinas are fucking great.
Love the content Mike, great work. But again no shots of Chloe!! Please include her in each episode.
NICE
Cheers to Cory.
Would love to see a walk around of your 6.0
sick RIMS, daddy
I see the caliper to back face clearance but I feel in my thoughts I'd give it a little more to compensate for pad wear and caliper movement
@6:33, do you have to account for caliper floating movement? Like collapse the pins and piston all the way to make sure you're not hitting the centers?
Great episode, what’s your thoughts on inner half colors? Your rendering showed black and some of your physical ones were just raw. What’s your preference and is there any reason for certain color/finish?
I woulda narrowed the barrel a bit, cause I like the chonky boi tires that actually grip.
Two sets ... Street and track!!!
First of all amazing video ! How about the reverse of this video where you teach how to look for the right offset wheel for a car
Do you use the BBS o ring seals or sealant along the split?
Could you make a vid explaining deep, shallow, and standard convex wheels?
Excellent video. Feel free to reach out for anything wheel related.
Are you doing these fitment calculations assuming the fenders are rolled? I find when the wheels are flush to the fender they rub especially when turning at full lock.
6:35 make sure to have new brake pads installed when measuring this!
Bring back the OG plate frames please and thank you. ❤️
With the Beemer can't you use the 2.7 bottom end with the better breathing 2.5 head?
Does the donor engine have an 885 head? Maybe swap heads for a super eta?
My dream wheels - for my e21
Ierland Engineerings wilwood big brake kit should gain you about 1/2" of caliper clearance.
nerd stuff....
I LIKE IT!!!
Thanks!!!
RI plates on Byron's car. It's been a while since I've seen those on a car.
One thing better than boxing a set of rims is having a nice car to put them on
chunky tires all the way!
Mike, your text values for the back spacing and wheel center line are swapped in the measuring portion of the video. One half of width is 4.625" and back spacing is 5.625".
Also, why not use the overall width of the rim, 10.25", instead of the stated width, 9.25", for your measurements. I've always found it easier to deal with those values especially when measuring and calculating. Besides, it doesn't matter what the stated width is. If there's not enough room for the actual width of the rim, you're going to have a bad time.
Great video all the same and thank you for putting it together. I'm excited to see where you take this car. My preference is for a squared off tire not stretched. I'm sure it'll turn out great whatever direction you take. Good luck!
My rims keep shinin' and my paint keeps drippin'
My rims, my- my- my rims, keep shinin'
I'm so sorry, i couldn't help myself 🤣🤣🤣
