Top 10 Places to Visit in Shanghai - China Travel Documentary

- Shanghai is one of the most fascinating cities in China, and in this video I share my personal top 10 places to visit in this amazing city.
Few cities in the world evoke so much imagination as the largest city in China. Rich and glamorous on one corner, rough around the edges on another, Shanghai is truly one of the most fascinating places in the country. Located in the East of China, Shanghai should be high on any traveler’s list.
The video starts off on the Bund, a spectacular waterfront promenade located right in the center of the city. It provides a stunning contrast between historic colonial architecture and the awe-inspiring modern skyline of Pudong on the other side of the Huangpu river. Here, you can get some of the best views across the city. After Pudong, I take you to Nanjing street for some shopping, followed by a moment of calm in the rebuilt Jing’An Temple.
After walking through the People’s (central) park where I encounter a ‘marriage market’, we search for pockets of old Shanghai. These authentic neighborhoods are fast disappearing, as development of apartment towers and shopping malls takes over.
With enough time, it’s possible to plan a few day trips out of Shanghai. Some of my favorite ones are Suzhou, Zhujiajiao, and the impressive Yangshan Port (Shanghai's main container terminal, or harbor). Back in the city, we travel to the outskirts to visit a ‘bicycle graveyard’ and visit a few trade shows. Probably not your regular 'tourist attraction', but interesting places for those interested in doing business in China. The video finishes at the former Expo site, taking you back to one of the largest events ever held in China.
** The footage in this video was made in the years before the global pandemic. I am currently not traveling, like most people in the world. **
Thanks for watching and feel free to leave comments below!

I like the Chinese people for their hardwork and success. ❤from 🇮🇳.
There are Indians in China and they love it! Their lives are so good. One even own multiple restaurants I think
Shanghai is one of top 10 city in the world and you can go out at midnight with no problems at all
Authoritarian countries are the safest. Same with Saudi Arabia, hardly any crime
@@dylanmurphy572 or japan?
@@dylanmurphy572 Sky high crime rate, dare not go to street at night, homeless people everywhere in downtown, but damn, we are democracy! Feel so good now. Another day the US is winning against China! 😁😁😁
@@dylanmurphy572 Have you visited? Do you know someone who had?

Greetings from a native Shanghainess. Thank you for promoting my hometown.
Thank you for watching :)
I would love to visit. 🇬🇧🤝🇨🇳
I'm happy to live here for 4 years already. Amazing, magical place
It's really beautiful, great you can live there! :)

Thank you for the tour of Shanghai. I especially appreciated the humble traditional neighborhoods. I wish they weren't disappearing.
looking back i have been living in shanghai for 10 years already, and I even saw my apartment in one of the shot, I am not a china-borned chinese but I have to say sometimes USA and other countries are exaggerating how bad china is.
I would love to ask some tips and qustions about living in Shanghai china =) my great grandfather is from china but he passed away long ago,i didn't get to learn from him about china and what he did or how it was there and even the language which im learning on my own.reading/writing in mandarin is difficult how ever speaking it is a little easy for me just depends on the words 😅but I learned a few simple words from watching cdramas daily.i would like to visit china but im scared to go alone since I can't read or write and speaking is not fully intermediate yet, my ex Chinese bf told me if I ever went to visit alone I may get scammed easily in china since I can't speak or read etc which could be true since I really can't speak or read in Chinese etc.how are foreigners getting around in Shanghai? do they get lost easily? is the air still not good in china? I hear the air is so polluted there? I ask. because I have lung issues so having to breath in polluted air may cause me to get sick easily while there and also how are expat or foreigners paying hospital bills or health insurance? that's my number 1 priority since my lungs is weak I have to prepare medical emergency when I do go visit china or anywh3ere else..sorry long comment to read..thanks for taking your time.

Its just american propaganda. USA isn't as innocent it self as it pretends to be. The land where USA stands had a native population, whom were killed and forced to forget their culture. It was a Genocide. Yet others stay silent.
Thank you for show me so beautiful city.
@@myah3arts062 I am a Chinese and it is obvious that you do not have a good impression of China, but as a Chinese this is nonsense. (Although occasionally the air quality is really bad, we had fog here a few days ago, which is relatively rare) but good weather is the norm in China! 99% of the road has greenery on both sides, and litter on the road is rare, mostly leaves. In addition, China is promoting trams to reduce pollution. I hope you can realize the real Chinese ↖(^ω^). Chinese people welcome foreigners very much, people will look at you when walking in the street because foreigners are rare and have no malicious intent. China is safe. There are cameras everywhere in the streets. But if you take a taxi, you may meet some hateful people, who will drive more and charge more because you don't know the way, and we also hate this kind of people. When communicating with Chinese people, you can choose to use translation software, but most young people in China can understand some English (English is a very important subject in China). In short, there are still many warm-hearted people in China. If you have anything, you can ask for help like a passer-by who looks kind. Finally, I hope you recover from your lung disease! (The full text is translated by software, I am not good at English and suffer from English tests)😊😊😊

The video is comforting but makes me sad at the same time. My granny used to live 2 blocks away from the bund & my junior school was 5 minutes walk from the bund. It brought so much childhood memories back. My great granddad worked in the Peace Hotel in the 1920s. The first KFC in Shanghai was opened on the Bund. We used to able to cross the street on the Bund instead of walking through under-tunnel nowadays. I recommend to walk though the Bund in the morning around 5 or 6 (during summer of course)... not many people and tourists during those early hours... I can't wait to go back....
Hope you can go back soon! This city certainly changes very fast, and it can be difficult to adapt. Let's hope that some of the older parts are at least kept in place. Best wishes :)
shanghai is the best, and your video made it look better.
Thank you, it's a great city indeed :)
Stef, its a real amazing video and while Iam watching it I feel like travelling again to China

Thank you for the amazing insight into Shanghai and some of the other parts of the city. It was fascinating for me to learn about the marriage market and while it might seem strange to other cultures, being Chinese (but not from China), I can understand why the families are doing so in the hopes of finding someone suitable for their sons and daughters. It might seem oppressive but marriage is a topic that is very sensitive in the culture.

Hey! Don't worry! Just come! I'm currently quarantining in Shanghai, arrived ten days ago, 4 days left for me to be free. Shanghai is only 14 days quarantine, comparing to other cities like Beijing, 21 days, Shanghai has the shortest quarantine.

In the old Shanghai area, relocate means you can get rich immediately, in these old streets, government always must pay millions of dollars for the residents to just relocate a 60m^2 old house. So it now become a barrier for both government and residents.
Some locals want to relocate, while others may not, and some of them also want to get more money for relocate. This make the government difficult to relocate the old streets for reasons like the high relocate fee, or some reluctant residents.
My wife's parents' house is waiting to relocate. But because of the high value of housing, the government or real estate developers have been hesitant to make a decision.
I like your objective viewpoint and pragmatic descriptions about Shang Hai. Through your video I can refresh my memory of Shang Hai that I had more than a decade ago.
Thank you for watching, I'm glad you enjoyed it :)
I was in Shanghai in 1973 when there were no tall buildings and just few Taxis for the foreigners, it's hard to believe in only 40 years they transform the country so fast.
That must have been interesting to see, things surely have changed a lot.

Very thorough video! I am a native Shanghainese, I like everything you mentioned in the video. Seem like you even know more things than me. 😊
He can even lead you to a restaurant where you hurl a LIVE golden retriever into a pot of boiling water then eat it like a savage. Or pay off a corrupt cop so you can personally torture a Uighur.
@@mrbrainnyc258 Nah, that’s just too much and stereotyped. I know the things you talk about exist, but sounds like media also add a lit bit spice into it.
@@snugglylola0805 Yeah, then simply look up "Yulin dog meat festival" or "dogmeat trade" here on youtube or through any legitmate search engine IE outside CCP China. You'll find lots of horrific images. Then try reading the UN Human Rights Commission report on Xinjiang. Or maybe check out the Global Slavery Index which reports 3.8M slave laborers in Chins.
@@mrbrainnyc258 I totally understand what you mean. I never agree with CCP’s agenda. But after traveling to Shanghai vs. online reading will be a totally different story.

Excellent video Stef. I have been to Shanghai many times, from 2002 to 2013. I was doing some application work then. Amazing to see the progress. Even saw the " World Financial Centre Building " start from zero to completion. It's the " Bottle Opener Building" . I look forward to view all your videos.
Thanks a lot Peter, glad you enjoyed it. This city is changing so fast, incredible that you saw it up close for such a long time. Any plans to go back?
@@stefhoffer Stef, Probably go back when we can fly again. The only thing that I don't miss are the crazy taxi drivers. I used to take a taxi from the Holiday Inn in Pudong to the Maglev, then a fast ride to the airport. Well, one trip, the taxi driver decided to give the Maglev a miss, so, I had a hair raising ride to the airport. :-)
Hey, very cool drone shots on the bund and lujizui. Did you fly yourself? I have a drone here too and have been flying in quiet parts of Shanghai, really want to try on the bund but a bit wary haha
Thanks! Yes I did, but it's already a while ago. I think it's (no longer) allowed to fly drones on the Bund.
@@stefhoffer Oh it is allowed, it's part of the geen zone. Actually pretty much the whole of Shanghai is a green zone except the airport. I just feel awkward to go there to fly haha. But anyway, will go tomorrow
