Thanks for this. I tested it in Maya, Cinema 4D, with Photoshop, After Effects and Premiere. I haven’t tried it with ZBrush nor Davinci Resolve but so far so zippy. No lag unless I’m recording the screen to show how cool. Also, I use a Wacom tablet and that works. Oh, and I never got the see through keyboard working but without the side blockers, I saw my keyboard fine.

I forced myself to use the Quest Pro every day for around 2-3weeks. I work in a 3D art production team from home. I found it to be usable but it needs more resolution. Even a bump of 10-25 percent would help. Another huge problem is the productivity software available. I used Workrooms, Immersed, and Virtual Desktop. Immersed had the worst quality but better customization. Workrooms had better quality but lacked basic features. Meta should have solid software if this is meant for working. Both programs suffered from bad antialiasing effects around windows and affected general readability. Virtual Desktop was the best in terms of quality. No weird antialiasing. It was smooth and consistent. One massive problem is the lack of virtual multi-monitor support. I use the Quest Pro every day for workouts and gaming. It's a great device for that purpose. It is not however in a good state to use as a daily work device. You can do it but I'd rather work on two small 1080p monitors than deal with the downsides.

Thanks for this incredibly thorough comment. Agree we can use a bit better resolution and I want less input lag so I can truly video edit. I too prefer to work with my monitor than use the Pro, but I like the idea and it worked very well - just have a long way to go, maybe a few years until it is where we need it to be. Apple’s headset could change the game…I hope so!

Then my office can be FAR more like an enjoyable space when I have people in it, but when I get to work, I work in a different space. I wonder whether anyone is doing research into eye damage. Many people are getting eye damage from looking at a flat surface monitor at the moment; I wonder if this will be better or worse.

For you out there, hesitating to step into this world. Working with VR is a total different way of working. Workrooms is "the worst" way of doing it as the benefit is not useable. in immersed VR or vSpatial you can move the monitors to the distant or to the near witch sizes beyond "real world"
my typical setup is 3 in a row and sometimes one in the middle above and I grab the one I need for the moment, the others are still visible.
With you VR glasses well "fixed" with BoboVR straps it is easy to forget the real outside. Be equipped with logi mx mini and a mouse and give it a try
and don't forget that screen capture cannot reflect the beauty (I mean that) of those world
I am working (my private world) for now a year in immersed VR, removed all real monitors at home and there is no going back. immersed is fedby an i7 intel nuc

I like this video; shows the downsides of where the technology for headsets is currently at. I know, I know, I "don't get it" but even trying to get on the "pro" side of it, I'm not seeing the advantages of being in a virtual space than real-world space. Sure, you can transport yourself to another world, represent yourself as another being, but with a sub-par experience, this seems like it's not ready for commercial use. Yeah, the customer's data will help Meta improve, but these seem like still very lab-like proof of concepts rather than ready for people to actually use -- too many constraints. The processing power doesn't seem to be there, and certainly the battery life/energy use must still be pretty high. I kinda doubt Apple will be able to leapfrog with their version; hopefully it's more AR than VR.
I am curious if the limitations on the number of screens is still limited by the computer itself -- ex. a MacBook Air can only handle one physical external screen, so presuming it's the same in the virtual world? The other bugs (moving around the screens move with you), and processing (video looking bad) is not an incentive to use it. And I definitely don't want to live in a cartoon world -- even if the avatars improve to the point that they're as good as deep-fakes are getting.

    • @ninjatogo
      @ninjatogo Před rokem +2

It's a virtual work environment that you can put in a backpack and take with you anywhere. That includes your virtual monitors, whiteboard, notes, and everything.
For remote meetings, it's way more immersive to be able to interact with colleagues using your hands and markers/pens.
It's a hard experience to convey over video and really something that you have to try for yourself for it to really click.

This is how it used to be actually. In the VR Social/Gaming community, we've been asking for modern headset manufacturers to quit it with this wi-fi or USB-C only connection garbage for a while now and they won't listen. The main limitation today for AR/VR is resolution/definition of the screen. The latter being so close to the eye that it would need a very high PPI (pixel per inch). Apple seems to be aware of this fact and will certainly use two relatively high definition screens and is investing a lot in research and development concerning pixel density.
Plus, is order to cover the entirety of the field of view, we would need at least a 16k screen per eye. The technology is not yet ready or not commercially relevant.

How long do laptops these days (with almost 2 decades of evolution) last without batteries? 8 hours?

It is really weird how meta just throws out the mouse. I don't like using my hands for what I did with my mouse. I guess tracking a mouse is too difficult.

Why would you want to look at a cartoon version of your colleagues that can’t accurately capture facial expressions to hold important meetings and make critical business decisions that rely on having an accurate understanding of what everyone in the room is thinking, when you can get a far more accurate picture over video?

Workrooms is pretty bad compared with Immersed. Video editing is impossible with the strange lag and compression artifacts that come up at random, even when connected to the computer via Wifi direct. Try something as simple as watching a CZcams video and you'll see the entire app just start to fail.
Saving for the apple headset, which will have 4K per eye resolution and will definitely work seamlessly with Macs.

Just, def no. Using a vr headset to work is a huge L. It has no benefits over using an irl computer and it can only cause other health issues with your eyes due to excessive use.
