I dont know your age but I was born in 61 remember these being played a lot when I was very young. You have to remember though in 1970 how much stuff did they have to put on tv in those days? Now we are 50+ years a lot of stuff exists now so a lot of the old stuff falls thru the cracks.

Huntz Hall is on the cover of the Beatles' Seargent Pepper Album. The Beatles also wanted to have a picture of Leo Gorcey on it but he wanted to be paid forthe use of his likeness and was left off the cover.

The Bowery Boys series was my first encounter with this group of actors. Every Saturday, their films would be shown on Philadelphia's channel 48 (UHF). I had no idea there were previous incarnations. It wasn't until I say 'Angels With Dirty Faces' many years later that I learned these guys went back farther in time than the fifties. I was surprised to see the main stars of The Bowery Boys, head-man Leo Gorcey (Slip) and side-kick Huntz Hall (Sach), as just a part of the gang that was actually led by Billy Halop's Soapy.
I hadn't seen any of The Bowery Boys films in years until I came across some of them on CZcams... umm, either they haven't aged well or I've aged too much!

Huntz Hall (Dippy) "I think and I think and I think and I can't remember the name but I remember the floor but forget the number so I push all the buttons whoever she is she ain't there anyway. Huh?
(Dippy sticks his hand out expecting a tip.)
Humphrey Bogart (the gangster): "Nothing for nothing kid."
Huntz Hall (Dippy): "Fine way to treat a kid. You wouldn't do that if my big brother was here; smack you up side of your head, he would."
Sorry to put you through that but it is my favorite exchange from the play/film so I had to share.

Stanley Clements was brought in to replace Leo Gorcey in 1956, playing the role of Duke Coveleskie until the end of the Bowery Boys’ theatrical run in 1958.

Yes, and the tone was lost with the loss of Gorcey. Clements' character was too straight and contrasting to Hall's Sach Jones character, who became more over-the-top and more annoying than comical.

Leo Gorcey was not in the original gang for the Broadway play; the character of "Spit" was played by a different actor.
Leo Gorcey did have a small part in the Broadway play, as one of the two boys (2nd Avenue Boys) who came to challenge the gang to a fight.
The entire cast still photo is from the Broadway play. Thank you for posting a photo of the 1935 Broadway set.
P.S. I THINK the "2nd Avenue Boys" were played by the Gorcey Brothers.

Bernard Gorcey played Louie Dumbrowski, owner of the Boys' hang out Louie's Sweet Shop. When I was young channel 9 had Bowery Boys Theater. I watched every weekend. I still catch them on cable occasionally. They haven't held up as well as The 3 Stooges but they're OK.

It is interesting to note that the Little Tough Guys series at Universal is almost impossible to find, and the East Side Kids/Bowery Boys are concerned, almost all Monogram films made before August 1946 are owned by Amazon ( including East Side Kids series), and the post August1946 films are owned by Warner Bros. Three notable exceptions are the first three Bowery Boys Films, which Warners owns.

  • @MegaMagicdog

Interesting as I remember watching some these movies on weekends on Ch.5 (WNYW) in NY. Dad used to watch them first run, he mentioned Gorcey got in serious trouble for beating up his wife and went to jail.
You failed to mention how several of the old DEK found their ways in Hollywood. Gabriel O'Dell starred in a short lived sitcom about a bartender called The Corner Bar. Billy Halop was a character actor who would pop up here and there. You may remember him from All In The Family as Archie's boss, "Muncie" who owned the cab company Archie moonlighted for. His sister, Florence Halop was also a character actor who is probably best known for her role on Night Court as bailiff, Florence.

I can kiiiiiiiinda see Slip = Moe, but I can’t follow you with Sach = Curley. Sach is his own thing. The only direct comparisons are Bill Cosby and Jim Varney and they were so influenced by him and came so far after that you can’t really say, “Sach is Ernest.”
Great video, though. I really like all of your stuff.
    Here’s to Huntz Hall.

  • @RayPointerChannel

The series became slick between 1950 and 1954. But as with all long-running series it was wearing out and the quality of the films started to suffer. This was evident in the last seven when Leo Gorcey left and Stanley Clements was brought in as the replacement. The energy, continuity, and interest was lost due to the absence of Gorcey, and for most people the series had died by this time.
