It might be different if Dibala was a perfectly innocent man and murdering him might indirectly save the lives of many. This is more dubious. you can see Chase trying to contain his grin. one brief conversation & it could be said that Dibala immediately bought Chase to his side, at least psychologically & emotionally, which is what makes Dibala such a charismatic figure typical of the stereotypical smooth-talking politician.
    Imagine being religious man, experiencing a crisis of faith, being validated that you made a right choice in switching career. It must have meant the world to him, coming from someone with a deep manly fatherly voice, towards someone lacking a fatherly presence in his life. Not even House, an atheist, acknowledged Chase abandoning his religious walk of life to embrace a more practical way to help lives & well-being. Yet he easily got that recognition from a stranger halfway across the world of a different culture.
    Chase must have felt his heart filled with warmth, pride, & childlike joy at that moment.
    This is a feat of great writing. And it did not even need a finishing punchline. and the writer made sure to flex on that subtlety.

    • @wobby1268
      @wobby1268 Před 2 lety +58

      Peter Blake wrote this episode, and Blake's favorite non-House character to write was Chase...largely because, as the only Catholic writer on a team full of Jews and atheists, he could relate to Chase, who was the only (lapsed) Catholic character on a show full of...well, Jews and atheists. 😉 Consequently, Blake wrote or co-wrote many of the very best Chase-centric episodes ("Cursed," "The Mistake," "Chase") and he particularly liked to address Chase's issues and struggles with his faith. (Even in a Blake-penned episode such as "Here Kitty," in which Chase had only two or three scenes, one of them was a rather moving and empathetic conversation with the patient about believing in things that science couldn't understand.) He was definitely the right writer for this episode -- an episode wherein Chase basically sells his soul -- and the scene you highlighted in particular.

      This began a character arc for Chase that ran all the way through to Season 6, Episode 8, "Teamwork", then S6E17 "Lockdown" and then to S8,E12 "Chase". At the conclusion of "Chase" we see that he finally has reconciled with himself and embraced his path. He has been looking for an escape hatch and thought he found it in Moira, the postulant about to take her final vows with whom Chase falls in love and wants to run away with. After a cathartic moment with House, Chase sat down at the table in House's office, content with his place in the order of things. The nod between House and Chase affirms that both truly understand each other. The episode and the final moment in some ways recalls the tale of the Return of the Prodigal Son. Chase is forgiven for his straying and takes his seat (which was always waiting) at his "father's" table once again!

If you're not sure, notice what happened to the other two; Cameron essentially replaced Wilson as the moral heart of the hospital, Chase replaced House as the medical heart of the hospital, and Foreman replaced Cuddy as the ethical heart of the hospital. Then you serve these companies and countries' foreign policy by calling them "uncivilised" which is undeniably racist, as you'd rather ignore causes because they upset you and blame the people living there instead.
      Your silly conclusion that "humanity is shitty" is based on a landmass that is victim to ongoing colonialism, and has been for centuries. Having resources stolen from it and governments dismantled and created where the West sees fit, creating and profiting from the resulting conflicts. It's almost like capitalism and its drive for profits are to blame and not just the weird "humanity is shitty" conclusion that ignores any real facts and only serves to dismiss the problem as somehow natural and unsolvable despite the fact it's a manufactured problem that can be solved.

    Nice to see James Earl Jones has kept playing the role of a dictator since his debut in 1977

    I wonder if the guy who told Chase not to treat him heard about Diablo dying and if he thought his conversation with Chase did something or thought a coincidence

    I feel bad for people who don't give this show a chance.

    A legitimate hospital would've immediately discharged Cameron and had her medical license revoked, for her desire to blatantly disregard her Hippocratic Oath. That doesn't make for good TV drama though, so it's understandable why they chose to ignore that little detail.

      No they wouldn't. Perhaps a reprimand, but firing a doctor for refusing to treat a dictator isn't something that happens on the fly...

    This episode is when I finally respected Chase. He went from pretty boy, to a man.

    No one better to play a dictator than the Dark Lord Of The Sith himself

    It's not every day that Darth Vader is in your hospital.
