Descended from African slaves, who escaped from gold mines around 150 years ago, the people of Coqui, on the remote Pacific coast of Colombia, live on the very fringes of the global economy. Bartering mostly with fish, bananas and other produce, they have little communication or interaction with the outside world, and yet they take visitors in without pretension, and as if they were family.
