The movie settings you really need to look at first are video mode and flicker reduction, which are both in the Setup Menu. Set Video mode to PAL if you are in Europe, or NTSC if you are in the USA. These settings effect the framerate at 1080, so it is important to get them right. Then you can set the flicker rate to 60 (USA) or 50 (EUROPE). If you leave it on Auto, it will choose the setting that fits with the PAL/NTSC choice you have already made. Auto, does not detect a flicker and synchronise with it. It merely automatically aligns with the PAL or NTSC setting.
The go to Shooting menu and select Movie settings. The first choice is Frame size/Frame rate. These refer to the size of the files (ie 424, 720 or 1080) and the nmber of frames per second being shot. Both 720 and 1080 are HD, though 1080 is known as full HD. 720 is particularly useful because the quality is very good and you can shoot at either 60 or 50p - which means that you can use it for slow motion shooting. As a rule of thumb, your shutter speed should be twice the frame rate. Obviously, the bigger the size, the better your memory card should be - not just in terms of size, but also in terms of streaming rate. Try to use Class 10 memory cards if you can.
The next option is Movie quality - which should be high (why have a D5200 and not use it to it's full potential?).
The microphone options are really important. Sound is often the most difficult thing to manage when shooting video. You can leave it on Auto and hope for the best, but we would advise that you set it manually every time before you use it. Even if you are recording on a separate device, it is worth recording sound attached to the video, as some softwares will use it to synchronise the images to the new, external sound.
Manual movie settings is the last option and it allows you to change the aperture, during your shooting.

I just go a fresh d3200 and freaked out when I wasn't able to change the settings I needed to get that nice cinematic look. This video was a lifesaver! Thank you sir!
Thanks, that was very helpful! Regarding recording audio, I would say that -12dB is a region to aim for, but clipping (distortion) only starts at 0dB. The prevailing idea is that the higher you can record the audio, peaking say at -3 or -6dB, the better your signal-to-noise ratio. Going over 0dB is definitely a no-no in digital, as distorted signals cannot be recovered. I look forward to an "intermediate" tutorial at shooting video with the D5200!
I've been having so much trouble shooting video with this! Thank-you so much!!
Thanks for the great tips! Definitely did not know about the mic info, so that was a big help and also for shooting in 720 and using it to slow down for slowmo. Wicked tips. Just subbed. Keep it coming! =D
Hey Flutterby,
The D5200 is a great little machine that packs a big punch. We will posting quite a few more videos very soon on using the camera getting the most from it. Auto focus in still is pretty easy to control, in live view you will have a square in the screen just move that to where you want to focus using the mutl selector switch, also in your menu you can have a few different settings for autofocus from single point to continuous focus for moving subjects that will keep it in focus.
We are grateful for this information. Greetings from Mexico!
Thank you very much, saved me quite some time reading this!
Want to mention that I just received a mini HDMI to VGAA/V Adapter, that has a 3.5mm earphone jack, and allows me to monitor the audio with earphones. Really cheap from China. Thought I'd take a chance, since I believe it was under $15.00.USD...Just plug the mini HDMI connection into the camera, and earphones into the earphone jack.
While monitoring during recording, utilizing a shot gun mike, there's a bit of an echo, but with a wireless lav connected, it's surprisingly good. (I did use a Beachtec XLR connector, that allowed me to boost the audio.) Didn't try without that Beachtek adapter yet, but will try to tomorrow.
Listening to the recorded audio, was truly great.
Hopes this helps any question re; the lack of earphone jack problem.
Regards,
Ron
Just started playing around with The D5200 this is great stuff! Thank you!
It is an excellent camera. I shoot my youtube videos on it all the time.
There are two sets of options, depending on whether you have chosen NTSC or PAL as your outputs. we are based in the UK so are PAL, which offers us 50p and 25p. if you are using NTSC, then you get 60p and 30p
Thank you for taking the time to do this video...well done
Thanks!
NTSC is used in north, center and southamerica as well.
thanks for the video I suscribed.
This was super helpful. Thanks so much! :)
Amazing video thank you so much!!
Amazing video!
i want to ask u can u make 1 video that show how to record video i mean like there is 1 logo which is unblur and after focus it get clear like that can u tell me how to do that?
Getting this camera today so stoked
Wow thank you this helped me a lot!
Hi may I know in the manual sensitivity what is the most suitable number in outdoors
Hello, so I just got the D5500 and recorded my first video of myself, watching it back I realized that it always had to refocus on me as I moved, and it wasn't like I was walking, I was just moving my head while talking and it still did that, how do I change that so the autofocus focuses on everything on the screen?
Shem Goltz yes, the best thing to do, is set the focus by putting something where you will be, and then with the lens to manual, so that the focus doesn't continually change..
Regarding flicker reduction, most monitors run at 60 hz so wouldn't that be more proper to use regardless of PAL or NTSC?
i love your videos ! ceep them coming :)
Thanks man you helped me alot! :-)
Hey thanks a lot for taking the time to reply back .. I'll definitely keep that into account once I do my purchase. It's my first DSLR and my knowledge about photography and its related stuff is actually terrible. Thanks you :)
Can I use a LAPEL mic with my Nikon D5200.... I got one and when I am recording it is not picking up the sound and only the background noise. Please can you advise.
Hey Juan,
If you change the white balance settings that will change the kelvin scale to warmer or colder ie: tungsten wb balance is 3200k so will be a lot warmer than say shade which will be a lot cooler more blue roughly 6000+k, you can set your own preset one and save it for a specific project go to white balance and then get a gray/white card and then pres "pre" this will save your preset and then just name it. Another way of checking is get your live view on change it watching it.
It's a very useful video. Thanks for sharing. I have faced a problem while shooting. Brightness of video changes as things moved. Kindly refer me to a video about white balance. Thank you
Very helpful 🙏🏾 thank you
Is there a way to have autofocus in video mode without having to keep depressing the shutter? I'm using a d7100
Standard Nameo this is a difficult one, because there is an autofocus function on the d500, but i am not sure about the d7100. on the d5200, you can only shoot video through the view finder. in order to change the autofocus settings for video, switch to viewfinder, press the i button and select focus. when in the viewfinder setting you will see options AF-S (single focus) or AF-F (continuous focus). perhaps it is the same for the d7100....
Hello! i would like to know if for the video recording the camera has full manual exposure, meaning if i can separately and at the same time aperture, shutter and ISO
thanks in advance
Can this camera be hooked up to a video switcher using HDMI to work in conjunction with two or three more Nikon D5200s for a multi-cam video shoot? Not recording to memory cards, but sending the video direct to the switcher and recording the shoot on a laptop?
The camera can be hooked upto a hdmi recorder so in theory it could be as it would send the signal through the hdmi but not confident on it..
thank you very good video
very informative thanks!
My suggestions is everything with Video, so it's totally perfect ;) Maybe if you could make a video about Lenses in filming, so whats important and which lenses are good for which film situation. I know you have a video about lenses, but a video more about lenses in filming. That would be really nice :)
Thank you. Your video was so helpful.
Glad it was helpful. There is more in shooting videos in our manual....

How do I make my auto-focus settings work better? I have it turned on for video mode, but it is very slow and very selective as to what it will focus on. Is there a way to just set infinite focus so I don't have to worry about mid range or close range objects going in and out of focus?
mcanedo92588 have you ever found the answer? That's what im trying to figure out. I'm using it on a tripod and when I move things closer it doesn't focus on that object
Same prob... Kindly let me know if u got any solution
It has a mic input jack. Do you need to turn that off so the ext mic works?
Well done!
When using an optional external mic, (Rode Pro) will the camera mic settings, be very similar in sensitivity to the camera's internal mic, or do you have to over compensate a tad?
Thnx,
Ron
very similar. I hardly notice a difference to be honest.
This video reminded me of The Mighty Boosh: Call of the Yetti
When Howard Moon was running Vince through his wildlife lessons.
Not to offend you, you're not boring its just your voice and the way youre talking about it. A great video, thanks a lot, helped me a lot ^.^
Your story is more boring than what his voice might be.
Hey thanks for the reply back :) Kind'a got my head around the AF part now, but sadly the d5200 makes a huge amount of noise when it does focus :( Great for music video because you can hide the noise. I'm guessing an external microphone will sort that out.
Thanks again :D
Hey! I want to use my D5200 for shooting youtube videos like 15 mins long. What should I keep the setting at in order to have the smallest file size?
Sidra Hi, i suggest you shoot on 720 and normal quality instead of high quality. I can understand that you want to keep the file sizes small, but in my experience keeping the amount you shoot to a minimum is more effective. Remember when you have uploaded it to CZcams, they will generate different versions with different resolutions, so people can watch in places where the line speeds are quite low. good luck! let me know when the videos are uploaded...
can you make a video with these settings so we can see how it looks
Interesting tutorial. Thank you even though I didn't hear about Africa. Is this camera made only for Europe and the US?
Thank you very much for this tutorial, i bought this camera for a university project and i haven't really had a chance to use it...

How can i control the kelvins???(Color temperature) ? i hope you can help me! ! tks!!
Hi and thanks for the video .. what lens do you recommend for the d5200? Or do you think that the kit lens is fine enough ..
thanks for the video. Its very helpful.. Can u please tell me how can I change my movie format from .MOV to .MPEG4
I was just wondering what file does the Nikon d5200 shoot on? MOV?
Hi could you please tell me how to use digital zoom when you're shooting videos. Is it possible at all? I mean when the camera is rolling and the shot needs a slow close up. Using a zoom lens always results in a loss of focus.
reminds me of James May discussing DSLR cameras.
Hahaha yes!!
I dont know why, but my camera saves video in .MOV format, how do I change my settings so that my camera saves the video on my SD card in .mp4 format?
Is it possible to use the zoom while shooting video by using D5200 and D5300?
yes it is, but there are two issues. Firstly that the lens may need to refocus and the noise of that might be heard in the sound track. Also, if you are using a long zoom (i.e. going from a long zoom to a short zoom number) that could affect the aperture. for example the kit lens is f3.5 at 18mm, but the will be f5.3 at 55mm. that could affect the way the video looks.
That was great thank you
Hi, I have a question. I have a Nikon D5200 and its my first camera so I am still learning. I was wondering why is its that when I shoot a video whenever people get closer to the camera the picture gets darker and when they move away the picture get brighter. Do i have some kind of setting on? I would just like to know how to stop that from happening. Thanks.
Allysa Gale are they blocking the light as they approach? you can adjust the exposure, if you need to..
i have a question, the right side of my internal microphone is not working, is this a setting or a malfunction of the camera? NIKON D5200
If you use this camera for copying 8mm movies from projector what settings would you use?
firstly I would use a tripod to keep it steady, probably shoot manual and set the metering to centreweighted. I would shoot a test to check of there was flickr at 1/50 second 1/60 second and then make sure that I was shooting at that speed. with the shutter speed fixed, i would have the lens near its sweet spot for aperture and then drop the ISO as much as possible. good luck.
I recently received a Nikon D5500 for my birthday and when I record video it picks up loud noises that's coming from within the camera. Could this be the settings or the camera itself? Ive set it up like your video.
Wani Ray ok what do the noises sound like/ if it sounds like the lens refocussing, then you need to switch the lens to manual. if the noise sounds like something inside the camera, then check the levels of your sound recording ( you should be aiming for 12 when recording). if that is ok and you still hear the sounds, then you may have problem.
what do you guys think of the viewfinder on the d5200? is it just as good/big as the d3200?
You got my sub and like.

this guy is hilarious and good
Love the video! But just curious i bought my d5200 mainly to record makeup tutorials.. Do you know how to have the camera on autofocus while recording because I just cant get it to auto focus on me or new things I want it to focus on unless I press the capture button to have it focus :( i hope you can help !! Thanks
Hi, the best way for you to do this is to set your focus mode to AF-F ( use the lever to switch to the viewing screen, press the i button and the focus option is bottom line second from the left). However, this may not work very well for you, as the lans may be quite noisy when re-focussing. I would suggest setting the focus beforehand and then switching to manual, so that the camera is constantly focussed. you will have to move into the area which is in focus, which takes some practice, but means there will be no refocossing noise...
Thank you so much for the comment back! Super helpful! :)

The file C:\Users\Desktop\DSC_9156.MOV is not a supported file type, and it cannot be imported into Windows Movie Maker., can you tell me the possible solution for this..
I just had D5200 Nikon camera luckily my brother set it up
To get rid of the background static I set my manual audio settings to 1. That was awesome but the audio still sounds soft in Final Cut Pro X, even after making it as loud as possible :(
have you tried audacity? that is pretty good at taking out hiss
if i am filming a youtube video in a quiet indoor place and i have just my camera (no other voice recorder or microphone) do i still but it on 12?
yes, set it so that the peak sound hits 12. for example, i usually have it in 8-9 setting, so that when the speaker raises their voice little, it peaks at 12. it is always good to test the sound first if you can..
thank you so much to this vidoe
Will the camera automatically split the video without interrupting the recording or will you have to manually start the recording again after the recording limit is hit?
How take the picture while I do the video is possible?? can you do a video please!!
how to setting microphone dagee on nikon d3100? please anyone here knows?
+Salsabilla Shafa Adzra Hi I don't have a d3100, and it is a more basic camera, but i know it has an internal mic. it should work the same way as for the d5200 - options probably in shooting menu, movie settings, microphone, then options - off, manual and auto
Thank you sir
But I have an almost-stupid question (bear with me; I'm new to all this!). Should I be using the standard lens that comes with the camera (after adjusting all the movie settings of course)? I went and bought a 50mm 1.8 focus lens for portrait shots. Can I use that? Thanks!
+Melissa Aflalo you can use any lens, they will have the same properties and differences as when you shoot photos with them. high aperture (such as using the lens at 1.8) becomes something to be more aware of when filming as you may need a greater depth of field due to moving elements
I order the AF-P lens, much better for video since it is silent while auto focussing and it also focuses faster.
@@aelorgames2627 can the AF-P lens be used with Nikon 5200?
That's too bad, but thank you for responding. Do you know why they would limit the recording length that way?
in which mode i have to set for video manual, aperture, or shutter speed mode?
I work in manual mode. It is easier for me to change the shutter speed and aperture, though the shutter speed is the most important, i think - you need to keep it at roughly twice the frame rate.
Hey, thanks for that vote of confidence. If you have any suggestions, let us know....
Your videos are very informative, Thank you! Is there a way to show the time and date when playing the video back on a computer? I do have the time and date stamp option set on the D5200.
i don't think so for video..

Using the D5200 for some short videos and we're finding that the camera continually autofocuses, which as the motor is rather noisy, you can hear on the recordings. Is there any way to stop this? (FYI, we're filming two people sitting together chatting. ) thanks
I switch off autofocus on the lens, then manual focus,
good job appreciate as new owner !!!
Thanks, glad you liked it. check out some of my other videos about this camera..
May I know which video mode to choose in Singapore, NTSC or PAL?
Superbbbb
What lens would you recommend for videos? and...what should the picture type be set on at the top of the camera? (like action/portrait etc). I change is sometimes due to brightness, but I wonder if there is a constant setting.
Hi, it depends what you are shooting, but a 50mm f1.8 would be good for most things. I find that I tend to shoot on shutter speed priority when I can. It is really important that the shutter speed is twice the frame rate. so if you are shooting 50 or 60 frames per second, then you need to have shutter speed at 1/125, likewise if you are shooting 25/30 frames per second, then you need to be at least 1/60sec. If you set the shutter speed, you can change the ISO and apertures to match.
Thank you!
what settings do i use for india ntsc or pal and also the frame rate settings please for youtube videos with d5200 kit lens?! help!!
According to the internet India is PAL. it is always good to shoot the best frame rate you can. When you upload a video to CZcams, they will produce several versions of the video, so that people can watch them on mobile devices etc. so produce 1080 x 25fps if you can, if not 720 x 50 is fine.
CameraWize Photography thank you so much !!!
hi i am a beginner nikon d5200 dslr owner, so i wanted to know what lens should i use for all purposes.... i like to shoot nature photography and sometimes macro shots....and i like to make videos while going on trip....previously i used to do all this with my mobile but now i want to invest in some good lense for my dslr so i want your suggestion thanks...
well it is safe to say that you can't do it all with a single lens. for nature i would look at the nikkor AF-S VR 70-300 f/4.5 5.6 IF ED lens. for video check out the nikon 35mm f1.8 G AF-S DX lens. the 70-300 can also shoot macro - though it isn't designed for that. remember your lenses with last longer than your body, so don't be afraid to invest in good glass..
Hello,
Great video! I wondered if you could help. I've shot a few test videos on my D5200 but when I import it into Final Cut Pro, pixels and blocks of colour are everywhere. I've searched about this problem and it's apparently quite common. I need a HD converter to adapt the MOV files created into a file that can be read by common editing applications. Are there any you recommend? What do you edit your videos with?
Thanks in advance,
Eric
Hi Eric, this isn't a problem that I have come across. We use FCP without any trouble. Are you shooting p or interlaced? we found that interlaced can sometimes produce blocking.

Can we make video more than half an hour in this camera...... plzz reply
Thankyou so much
Quick question, I have been recording video for sometime in manual mode, and all of the sudden everything has gone dark. When I focus or switch to a different setting the lighting looks fine so I know it's not anything with the lighting. I checked my settings and everything seems to be the same... does this seem like a problem with the camera or have we just accidently changed a setting? Any suggestions?
Miriam Lane Hi, I think it is more likely to be a setting. the obvious thing is exposure. when in video mode, you can change the Fstop of the lens - and so the exposure- by pressing the Fn button ( front right as you look at the camera) and turning the thumb dial. try that...
Yes, the Nikon D5200 produces MOV files in video
why my nikon d5200 don have the same frame sizes options like your d5200?
How can I have the mic lvls in the liveview?!
Hello, you should be able to see the Mic levels if you have the camera in live view and then press the i button.
Hi Sir, a question. When making videos for youtube with this camera, you'll get a sound from the focus. I attached a Rode-Go, is there any way to fix this?
If you attach the microphone to the external socket, then you will get some noise as the autofocus lens focuses. You have two choices: you can either focus manually, which takes practice, but can be effective, or you need to record the sound separately. You can record sound on a specific recorder or with an app on your mobile phone. Depending the phone, you can use your microphone. There is an advantage to this - you can get the microphone much closer to the sound source so it is better quality. then you synchronise the sound and video in your editing suite.
I've just picked-up the Nikon, and I'm wondering what lens would you recommend for shooting a wedding video, I was thinking the Nikon 35mm f1.8 G AF-S DX Lens, what do you think?
Yes , or a 50mm. either 1.4 or 1.8. you will need to be pretty close to the action, but the quality will be excellent. shoot wide on 1080 if you can, then let the editing software crop tighter etc..

I shot video yesterday and saw that it was very choppy and there was a lot of pauses. What did I do wrong? was it the shutter speed, the aperture or something else?
Gari Harvey difficult to say, but it could be the shutter speed ratio. generally speaking the shutter speed should be twice the film speed, so if it is 30 frames per second, the shutter speed should be 1/60. try it on auto for everything as a test and see if it is better...
I know I am very late on this but after spending countless of hours to search the CZcams for the best Vlog-camera, my wife reminded me of our old Nikon D5200. I remember having Hughe problems getting the focus right. Is there any such a thing like auto focus on this camera, in video mode? Best regards! :) Ricard, Sweden
Hello Richard, well you wife is right, of course. I shoot all my videos on my Nikon D5200 and it works very well. However, for vlogs I would recommend that you don't move around too much. The autofocus will work and follow you around (set it to AF-F), but it can spend time searching for focus and that is very distracting. If you can, keep to a focal plane going across the front of the camera, rather than towards and away from it, or do as I do and set the focus with a reasonable aperture (f/8 at least) switch focus off and then try not to move around too much. Also, it is worth getting a better lens if you only have the kit lens.
What microphone are you using in this video? OR what external microphone would you recommend for the Nikon D5200 for taking youtube videos?
we use a rode videomic. it works well. whatever you choose, make sure it is unidirectional mono, not omnidirectional stereo, otherwise you will pic up everytthing...
