In today's video, I'm sharing all the things I slashed from my budget when I started my debt free journey that I also thought would be very hard to give up, or that I would miss. Turns out, some things I don't miss at all and I'm happy to put that money towards my savings goals, or towards some "Fun Money". I love a mindful spending plan, where you spend on the things you value, and cut the things that you don't.

I have 3 dogs and 3 cats. Which means I am responsible for providing vet care, and healthy food for them. I have almost completely stopped spending $$ at fast food restaurants. I used to stop almost daily for a burger because I don’t like cooking for myself. But now I make a burger at home and it saves me $ and tastes better.

Spend: personal protective equipement (helmets, sunglasses, etc.), hair care, sunscreen, footwear, certain clothing items (pants, shirts, coats and sweaters, socks, belts), bedding, home gym and recreation equipement, coffee, dyi/custom heavy use furniture (i.e. desk, cabinetry, couch), audio equipment, perfume.
Save: bags, skin care, other clothing (jeans, tops, swimsuits, gym wear, shorts, skirts, dresses), low wear furniture and decor (i.e. bedside tables, side tables, accent lamps, plant pots), alcohol and restaurants, electronics, vehicles.
I spend on items that are either for safety/health, for comfort, or will be of use for >10 years.

The key for me was to make other interesting activities more accessible, and putting up some barriers between me and the checkout button:
The biggest help for me was removing the Amazon app from my phone, logging out of the desktop site so I have to log in each time, and removing my saved credit card info so I have to enter it each time. There are also browser extensions you can install that give you 30 seconds to change your mind after clicking the checkout button. Some people I know leave things in their virtual cart overnight and re-examine their selections in the morning. If I'm hungry or sad, I pause to get a bowl of cereal or pet the cat before I buy anything.
Another thing I've found that helps is having other flexible and interesting activities always ready: a library book I'm excited to read, a game I'm determined to master, finding one of the dogs to ruffle their ears or take a short walk - even writing a "menu" of activities on a note card that I can pull out and remind myself of fun things I want to do.
Like changing any addictive or habitual behavior, less shopping is easier if you're busy enjoying other things, instead of needing a "fix" to feel normal or functional. Be patient and loving with yourself, if you can. It took time to develop the spending habit, and changing it takes time, too, along with effort and energy.
Oh, and one more idea: plan shopping or check-in days with a supportive friend, where you edit and finalize your carts together, instead of spending willy nilly every day of the week.

Here;s an idea that comes from James Clear who wrote “Atomic Habits,” which I recommend and can often be checked out at a local library in all book formats. When you’re removing an undesired habit you will need to replace it with a new attractive habit. Your mind likes efficient and familiar things and abhors the absence of routine. It can take a bit of time for the new habit to really click, but it can be done! There’s more to this process so finding his book or searching for habit replacement may be helpful for you.

Finding activities to fill, what would have been, shopping time was key for me. I picked up reading again, and I have read so many books now! It’s honestly been a really fun addition to my life. On the weekends I found organizations to volunteer with, for me that was a local botanical garden. I have a more stable exercise schedule too. Honestly, it opened up a lot of time to explore new and existing hobbies 😊

Before the pandemic I was religiously getting my hair done at the salon every 8 weeks. Now I stretch it to 3 months because I noticed my hair growth was slowing down a bit and I could easily get away with visiting the salon once a quarter. Savings=$400.00 per year.
Gel Manicures have been cut back as well to 8 months a year instead of every 3 weeks. (I do my own with just clear polish on the months I’m “resting” my nails from Gel.
    Savings=$450.00 per year
I also don’t impulsively shop anymore online or at the mall and plan out my few purchases of the year carefully and intentionally. I now buy only quality vs. quantity and way fewer items.
Don’t buy new books anymore either. Loved this video! Thank you!

Libraries are awesome! (I thought so even before my mom became a librarian. 🙂) Thank you for supporting your local library! In addition to books, circulating materials can include DVD's, magazines, and access to e-books, and some even have things like sewing machines, chainsaws, and kid's fishing poles you can borrow for free. Community outreach, book clubs, and fun live learning programs are also library staples.

This year I decided to buy thrifted items for wardrobe items. It’s been enlightening to look for clothes in natural fibers. I really look at quality now. It’s amazing the finds that I’ve scored.
I believe in buying good coffee-organic fair trade-and making it myself. The nearest coffee shop to me is a 20 minute drive. I admire your decision to get debt free. I vowed when we got free of debt (no mortgage, no car note ) that I would never pay interest on purchases again. It’s been several years ,and so far I’ve kept that vow.

Ive gotten better at buying things that I actually wear based on lifestyle not just because it looks cute or everyone has it. Also learning techniques on to care for clothing so they last longer. Lux items are great but I’d rather used my money on great vacation with family to create memories.

Debt and spending have never been significant issues for us since we tend to be pretty frugal naturally, but during a couple of job layoff periods when we needed to look for ways to trim our budget, we tried the "extreme budget" coffee route and man was that not worth it! At least for us, it was such a (relatively inexpensive) simple pleasure and didn't impact whether we made rent, so we both agreed to stick with the coffee we liked and find the savings somewhere else. I kind of think that if you make frugality too unpleasant, you're less likely to meet your goals because you just get "over it" and want a treat and then boom, back in spendy mode.

I now save by swapping high end make up and skincare for drugstore products (they are fantastic and don't see the difference). Instead of expensive clothing, I shop for high street brands that have excellent dupes for the looks that I like. For supermarket shopping, I've switched to grocery store brands and I buy in bulk. For holidays, I used to travel overseas yearly and now I've joined a hiking club and have weekends away that are amazing and cost very little. On the way to home ownership feels so much better than spending on consumer items!

I tested myself once...i had 5 different pieces of clothing to return at 5 different stores that i love. I went into each store, walked right to the service desk, returned my item (not for store credit) and walked out of each one without even looking, never mind buying.

This is so relatable! I paid off my student loans at the beginning of this yr and it's the best feeling! I used to shop a lot especially on clothes and I find myself heading straight to the stores when there are sales even though there isn't anything I particularly need. I love Aritzia too, but yes, the $ does add up. Used to buy a lot of cosmetics, but cut down on that 90% because I don't need different eyeshadows, lipsticks, or blushes all the time. I practiced minimalism, but I learned to treat myself once in a while. I think the pandemic and lock down really helped me reflect on what I really need vs want. I increased my income when the pandemic began in 2020 because I opened my own practice on the side. I cut out buying clothes because I really don't need them when I'm working from home majority of the time. I haven't been traveling even though I would like to. With me getting closer to paying off my debt, I find myself being more disciplined and focus. Even after paying off debt, I find myself rarely buying clothes because I have a lot of clothes already. If I come across any pieces that I like, I will think about how often I'll be wearing it. I still eat out to try different interesting cuisine or food, but now I'm trying to buy a home, so that's another goal I'm focusing on that helps me spend wisely. If the time comes when it's safer to travel and I reach my next goal, I would like to travel overseas again. Thanks for sharing!

I call it an investment in myself and my life to get a few items that will last a long time even if it cost a little more.

But now I notice how they always use gorgeous, young models with perfect skin to advertise skin care that will "transform" your skin. Except ... that stuff so rarely does anything noticeable to my skin. Maybe there's a $100 cream out there that would improve my melasma/oily skin/large pores (prescription spot treatment from the dermatologist didn't work at all), but I'll remain mostly blissfully ignorant and use a good, simple cleanser, sunscreen, and oil-free moisturizer.

A big way I saved money was to cut cable, which was like $120/month. I only watched like 3 channels. Saving that money freed up money to travel more, which is more important to me. Although I love love LOVE books, I've been trying to reduce the actual books I buy. It makes me sad because I love owning books [as my home library will attest] and I love supporting authors. I try to reconcile this by using my local library system and requesting books by certain authors.
Also, I am usually saddened by the tea made in the US when I go to restaurants and coffee shops, so I usually make my own tea at home. I imagine, if I lived in another part of the world, getting tea out would be a problem with my spending. I love coffee but it tends to give me migraines, so I have it only very rarely. This is a huge money saver in the Pacific Northwest.

My partner and I are like you and your partner. We'll shell out to support local for food/coffee, but try to save on things like weekly groceries since we'd be happy eating the same meal every night. I have family in the Maritimes and so using credit cards well makes a decent annual difference (live in Ontario).
One thing that made a big difference was when we moved in together. We're both impulse Uber Eats people (him, mental health related; me because I end up overworking until late). By moving in not only did we cut a bunch of utilities and rent cost, but it helped us to have better habits from the external support and be able to live more in our values (like having supper together instead of alone in front of the TV). The DINK privilege is real when both people have above COL jobs.

Here's how I save money without feeling deprived of anything: 1) I buy food that is on sale because the "best before" date is soon. Instead of deciding beforehand on what I'm cooking for dinner, I browse through what I see on "best before"-sale at the grocery shop and choose dinner with that in mind. Sometimes I buy multiples of the on-sale food items and put them in the freezer for cooking later. It makes absolutely no difference to my quality of life, but I can really feel it in the budget! 2) I buy much much fewer clothes than I used to (and I sell some if I buy some). Instead of for example spending on something like 10 fast fashion pieces a year (like I used to do), I buy one or two expensive pieces of clothing from independent designers, made out of great quality natural fabrics. (And when I thrift, I sell something instead of the things I buy) 3) I get haircuts very very seldom. Sometimes my sister cuts my hair, and I cut her hair - it's a really nice sister activity to do. But - when I do get haircuts at a salon I allow myself to splurge and get a wash and head massage and whatnot at a fancy place. So basically - I spend less money on average, buying less but getting good quality and luxury when I buy something. It also feels more special because I'm not doing this all the time. (I also have cut down on alcohol and travelling and it actually feels great. I feel that if you travel "too much", each trip is more forgettable).

    1) I stopped my Amazon Prime membership. Too easy to hit the "buy now" button. And I can still get free shipping by buying over a certain dollar amount, but that makes me wait and think about my purchases so I'm finding I buy a LOT less. 2) I don't buy books anymore. Can get them from my local library, or even easier, from my local library's app (both audiobooks or ones to read on my iPad). 3) I too love Aritzia! I stopped their texts and emails to reduce temptation.

My major cuts have been in clothes and entertainment. Been gaming perks at my job by way of Amazon gift cards (Which I can use to pay for whole foods grocery pick up, we're on the edge of another soft lockdown where I am in northern California) and Wayfair for basic furniture needs (working on my room becoming a studio sans bathroom because my housemates suck). It's allowing me to really pay bills on time which goes a long way to my credit score not dropping further. I'm moving out of the US next year and I need to get rid of most of my things anyway so I'm selling off a lot of what I own. Turns out I don't like clothes as much as I thought I did lol
As for where I do spend? Food. Quality, organic, local food. I get go talk to my favorite local farmers and ranchers, interact with my neighbors and save in fuel by nit leaving my neighborhood because it's super expensive to fuel up here in California right now.

There are some items which I don’t spend money on now:
    - Accessories (esp. for hair)
    - Unplanned groceries
    - Stationery items (I’m so in love with cute stationery items even though I don’t use it much. Learning not to buy unless required)
    - Soft drinks/ bottled goods
    - Make up (just a mosturiser is needed even for parties)
    - anything on sale or discounted price (be it food, clothes, footwear)
    - impulsive purchases (which I usually regret later)
    - extra pair of eye glasses
    - key chains, fridge magnets
    - books (I’d rather read online, if required)
If we could just find solution, such as repairing things if possible, we can save a lot of money. Throwing away things and buying them need not be impulsive. Now, I have begun to adopt this notion: If I am going to buy any clothing or footwear, it must not be worn for one occasion only. And if it is, I’d rather not buy. I have everything in limit, money time, so why waste? We need to intentional and should ask certain questions before buying anything :)
