- For the month of January I challenged myself to do a No Buy challenge. I decided to stop spending money on makeup, clothing, home decor, accessories and skincare for the month - here's how it went.

How is your low/No buy going? What went well & what do you want to improve?
I'm really proud of myself that I really only took out money to pay off debt and for the vet. I haven't touched my savings account in 3 weeks. I plan to keep going with this. Part of my issue is that I don't use my savings for just emergencies, and that has to stop
Good job! I made it through mine pretty easily because I started a kind of permanent low buy a few years ago. But in order to prepare I got a book that I’ve been wanting to read for a while called Hello, habits by Fumio Sasaki. I’ve already read Goodbye, things several years ago and also I’ve never actually bought myself a what I would say comfortable bed in my adult life and I’m 42. it’s always been ones that exes picked out or spare room beds from my mom when I moved home from New York and Miami so I bought a Japanese Shiki Butan in December but I knew in the previous Dec when I really wanted one that they were 50% off at the end of the year so I saved for the entire year and bought it the last week of December.
Im enjoying having such a comfortable bed that I can push back off to the side and use the tatami mats to do yoga on and clean under it and as soon as it’s warm I can hang it in the sun for the UV lights to kill all the dust mites which is easing my anxiety and need to always clean. But also I’ve been reading my book more and I started learning Japanese in October, so these are all habits and routines that keep me from scrolling and seeing ads and having FOMO. I also deactivated all of my social media last October on my birthday, except for CZcams and I only follow channels like yours about minimalism frugality, and learning Japanese. ❤🌱🌸💵
I did a "No Buy January." After the holidays, I didn't want to go into stores or shop online. I needed a reset. I was stricter on what things I wouldn't buy. Two things, I did spend were flowers for a friend and a Lululemon purse that was almost 50% off for me.
For February.
My reset definitely helped the bottom line of my bank account.
In February, I am going grocery shopping from my fridge, freezer and cupboards, only replacing fruit, veggies and milk.
I also did a no buy January, and I feel that for me the hardest is not buying skincare. I am always on the lookout for the next hype/ popular ingredient, etc. But the no buy month served me to be more concience. Than you for sharing!
Happy belated birthday🎊🎉🎊
I’ve been fully debt free for about 48 hours!!! So ready to revamp my spending habits for this new era 🎉 I froze my credit card (online and literally in my freezer lol) ABC’s I’m just DONE with spending money I don’t have or stealing from my future. Ready to start building my savings for the things that actually matter ✨
Yessss get that emergency fund going next if you haven’t already! Congratulations! How good does it feel?!
Well done ❤
@@Christinamychas Absolutely amazing! Still going strong! Got a little bit in my emergency fund and ready to keep going ✨
Congratulations @CeliaTambor well done you!
I am a 100 percent with You in mind!!!
I did a low-buy January, too. We did buy a dog, but I don’t reprimand myself for that, because we have been waiting for a few months for the right dog to “find us” and she did. What I discovered about myself is that I use shopping (usually thrifting) as a way to distract myself from a heavy load of stress. With retail therapy out of the picture, I found I stayed home more, did things that needed doing at a more leisurely pace, and thereby reduced my stress load.
no but that's essential spending so it doesn't count
I also did a no-buy for January, and it went well overall. At first, I entered the challenge with a punitive mindset in response to spending far too much in 2022. But as time went on, my perspective shifted as I realized that the no buy is simply a tool to help me achieve my ultimate goal of being debt free. Great content, as usual, Christina!
Yes it is!!! You will be debt free! Rooting for you!
Mindset is everything 🙌
My house created a “Grateful January” every year we do a no buy January. We focus on being grateful after Christmas and enjoy what we have. It’s great to catch up from overspending before Christmas and breaking that habit. Often we will follow with 2 months of a low buy because we realize we didn’t need anything in January
Laura Rose, this is such a beautiful sensible tradition! ty for sharing this inspiring idea.
This is a pleasant tradition I should do this
I was inspired by you and I did a “no buy” January. I spent nothing on clothing, shoes, and handbags. I got some take out but it was wishing my monthly food budget. I bought a book for my profession (mental health therapist), shampoo and conditioner and laundry stuff. I bought some gifts for my grandchildren. Like you, it has been great and relaxing not to think about consuming and spending. Thanks for the inspiration.
I am doing a Wardrobe Freeze for 2023 (so no clothing, shoes, accessories, bags etc) and it has been great! only a few tempting moments, but I a really re-disovering the love I have for my wardrobe again.
I'm happy and glad to say that in Jan I didn't get a text message from my bank saying I was overdrawn a week after my payday, which was the norm for the last few months. Low buy Jan really made a difference. I still bought things that were in my wishlist, it could have been better, but, hey that is an improvement.
Your words resonated with me so much. I have struggled getting out of debt because of impulse buying. Thanks to you, I'm changing my mind set - keeping a promise to myself, instead of punishing myself. Thank you so much for the eye opener. You've really helped me.
You're really good at explaining your thoughts and emotions about what you buy and why. You're right that positive motivation works better than negative, like punishment. My main motivation for buying less, or buying second-hand, is just for overall consumption reduction, trying to be a good global citizen. Thanks as always.
Christina! Your my fav. Listen to you everyday to help me keep accountable 💖
I'm proud to say I had a successful no buy January and I learned a lot, specially about the things I really need in my wardrobe and stuff. I could also declutter a little, giving things that doesn't have meaning to me.
I'm going through that phase of having enough and overconsuming things, and i believe i am almost ready to come out from this phase. Bumping into your video is such a great inspiration and uplifting that it's not only me who is in this journey, and i'm kind of forgiving myself for being like that. Few more days before March, thinking to try this one-month no buy challenge. Thank you for sharing your journey! 😊
Great job! 🎉Very proud of you! My no buy January was incredible and I learned that I do no need to buy myself new stuff to be happy.
Your perspective on changing self-talk is so useful 💙 I've watched a lot of 'no buy' content, but no one has discussed it in that way before.
I love watching your videos. They have helped me look at my clothes and life with a better perspective. I was not able to do a no-buy January, so I am setting my no-buy goals for February.
Love that you got together with Alyssa! You two are my heroes!😘Great video as usual😍
I did my first no buy in January, thanks to Christina's channel entirely, and i am so grateful for the inspiration and her content. I was very successful! Christina, you've been an absolute game changer for me, and i couldn't be more grateful! Looking forward to your next posts.
Also did a no buy January especially not eating out. Paying off Mortgage next week 3 months early due to no buy. Will now continue no buy/ low buy to rebuild savings . I love this exercise and to see how many days I can go without buying anything. Is this a need or a want has really changed my mindset. Love your channel! ❤
I completed a low buy in January as well. The only things I “bought” were some skincare products I had gift cards for. I felt less anxious and so much more at peace this month than I have in a long time. Thank you for your inspiration, Christina! Much love from California!
I am very inspired by you and getting a handle on my compulsiveness around shopping. I saw your video about no buy a bit latter than when it came out, but I decided to join and I am continuing into February. What went well is that I feel much less compelled to shop. I spent that time starting some new habits of daily writing and meditating and getting a dog. Both are good, but I needed things for the dog. So I shopped some on Amazon. That brought up some feelings of compulsion, and I need to reflect on the connection between online shopping's instant gratification and feeling compelled to buy.
I gave up alcohol 20 years ago. Best decision of my life. I have a few things I'm not buying at all this year and I'm going to continue with low buy for clothes and shoes and only replace. This has been a great month and I look forward to your style videos based on what you are learning from the book and videos you're following. 💜
18 years sober here- love it
Happy belated birthday Christina! 🎂 Perhaps the "dry January " combined with your exercise routine, you look beautiful and healthy - glowing ✨️
Thank you for the update. 💙 💛
Girlll, your skin and/or your makeup looks so nice!
Thank you! This is one of my favorite videos of yours, maybe bc this is what I’m trying myself for a “No buy November” for many of the same reasons. Lots of insight and practical tips.
Great video! I am intrigued by the book and can’t wait to hear more about that too.
You look beautiful! The hair, makeup, and light neutral shades on you are WOW! Thank you for another great video! XOX
Mindset is everything. Great perspective!
I had an exhausting December so when I saw that you and others were doing a January no buy, I thought I'm not going to put that pressure on myself. I'm trying to pay off a car loan though so I thought well I can do a low buy at least. It actually turned out to be practically a no buy. Thrifted a few sweaters because I had lost weight and was cold. Purchased a heavier moisturizer for the cold months. But I was grateful for the experience because I felt more peaceful also. I'm planning to continue it!
Really great video, helped me a lot. Thank you
you make a great point- a break from anything new allows you to enjoy what you already have. I’m actually old enough to enjoy my own vintage- ie. my old clothes from the 90s. 😊
So much fun!
Hi Christina. Great video- it is all about mindset! I’m doing no buy year since Dec 20th of 2022. Hmmm yesterday I almost bought something. It was so tempting I had pictures of myself wearing this item… I just put it back on shelf and walked away… today Im proud of myself. It didn’t feel like punishment but a conscious choice. I wanted to remember my “why”. And I did it. Today I played a little with my wardrobe so that feeling of need to buy something new went away. “Contentment” is my word for this no buy period. Sending love from US
I resonate so much with your initial struggles, I honestly hope I succeed in this challenge because this habit I have is B-A-D!!!!
Great video, very balanced.
I’ve been wanting that book, too. So envious! Haha! Good for you!❤
I really love your videos!!! Thanks for sharing
Well done on a month long no-buy! I'm doing an eyeshadow no buy until I hit pan in every palette (I've got 11 palettes), so probably will last 12-18 months. It could easily be a "punishment" sounding no-buy but I'm doing it from a place of "I can do any look with what I have" and discovering new looks from my existing collection is so exciting!
I just discovered your channel and am loving all your content! This no spend challenge is such a great idea. Definitely going to try this.
Thank you for sharing this experience with us, it was really inspiring and encouraging
You are GLOWiNG, Christina ! You look especially gorgeous today ! All your inner growth, not drinking, being out of debt, and intentional, empowered living looks GOOD on you, Girl ! Love you haircut !
Hey can you do a make up tutorial ? I know you’ve kinda done one in a “get ready with me” vid, but new one please ? Love from your neighbor to the south, in Buffalo, Liz PS I adore & miss Toronto !
I have been watching you from the start. So I have seen the whole journey. And multiple times I have tried to start living more intentional and do no buys but I failed multiple times. Then in the end of 2022 I realized I was on a destructive path and needed to change things. I think I was doing the same thing your talking about, I 🤔 ight if it as a punishment instead of looking at it in a healthy way. At the beginning of January I started over, with motivation and the goal is saving and being more responsible in my late 30s. I have made it this far and now I'm determined. Thank you for sharing your journey. You have been an inspiration 💕
I actually loved doing this challenge based on your encouragement. It really helped me to think through my needs vs wants. I’m pretty sure I’ll be doing this again…
PS ❤love❤your new hair style. So much softer and absolutely beautiful on you.
Thank you so much and so happy you got value from your challenge!
Love this video. I plan on doing a no-buy May. Thank you for such a positive message.
Thanks Christina! Love your videos and your down-to-earth personality and outlook. Sending lots of 💕 👋
Thank you so so much! ❤❤❤
Happy birthday, Christina!
I love your mindset and suggestions for keeping it a positive experience. I also love your tracker. I have used habit tracker apps in the past but I think how you do it on your notes app is great. I'm setting mine up now...
Thanks for sharing your post-mortem. I like how you approached this one not from a place of punishment but as a journey to serve your future self. That was a helpful reframe.
Glad it’s helpful!! ❤
I am doing a low buy February. It been a struggle so far but hanging in there. Your videos are very inspiring, been watching for about 6 months 😊 but first time commenting
Love your videos as always!! I’m trying to continue my low buy from last year and buy 23 or fewer personal items (accessories, clothing, etc) this year! A little nervous because I tend to get spendy in the summer months.
I find that I get extra spendy near my birthday. I am impressed that you stuck to your No Buy even on your birthday! Happy Birthday!
Needed this!! 🙌🏼
I also did the no-buy challenge. It was amazing to see how many things “I needed” weren’t that crucial after all. It helped me paying off my debts (which fortunately were small). I think that during the year I am going to do more no-buy months. Thank you for the suggestion. It works!
YES! Congratulations!!
Good job Christina! I was inspired by you to go on a no-buy January challenge myself, and I didn’t end up buying anything except for a replacement eye brow pencil. 🎉 Problem now is that January is over and I feel like the dam is about to 💥!😂
This was so helpful Christina! I tried a no buy for Jan - didn’t do as well as you, but now I’m motivated to do better for February :)
So glad! No pressure ❤️ make it so it works for you, you know?
Great video as always. I appreciate how honest and straightforward you were describing your thought process and emotions. I'm inspired to do a no-buy month, I'll let you know how it goes! Also, what app did you use to track your daily spending on your phone?
I’ve been watching your channel for at least a year now, and I’ve got to say this has to be your most reflective video yet! It is so inspiring and meaningful to see you come into your own. You’ve got momentum, girl! ❤
A lot of her older videos are very self reflective (vs suggestions/general lifestyle) if you like that approach. Some of them are more long form too.
@@thenopedetective Thank you!
I will need to do a no buy in April as Jan, Feb and March are all birthday months for my husband and children. Looking forward to it , thank you for the motivation. Great video as always 👌
New Years is always a great time for No Buys. After the Holidays I always feel very "satiated" by presents and all the stuff that comes along with Christmas.
Understanding how bigger retail uses limited sales and item listing as marketing ploy to make us feel pressured to buy that item immediately has really helped me put off buying as much. Now I just put it on a wish list and wait and see if I still want that item later on. Still buying but not as much!
I also enjoyed how you framed this as positive to better your future self.
It’s so much more effective imo ❤❤
@@Christinamychas One clothing brand I really love is Levi's, and this is the 501's 150th anniversary year. But I don't really need anything new, so trying not to feel like I'm not missing out on anything special or collectable...(or expensive...)
I was inspired your video and I also went through no-buy challenge. I bought some clothes for my kids, but did not buy for myself. It was not really tough. So I want to do it again in this year, anyway I am happy for achivement. Thank you for giving me a great opportunity!
The self-talk part... 💡❤️
Your hair really looks nice at this length and a bit curled like that 😍
Please do a video where you show every item of clothing in your year-round capsule wardrobe that you own right now 🥰
So so informative video. I'm going to try the January challenge.
Your hair is stunning 🤩
Love all this. Thanks for the Tibi intro
Congratulations, Christina! I also achieved a no buy January after watching many of your videos over the past year. It feels so good to accomplish this and I intend to go month to month with my goal of spending less. Thank you for your advice and encouragement.
I’m doing a No Buy Feb. thx for the video and the idea of the list in my Notes App. Putting that together now
Such an insightful video. Thank you
❤
Liked and subscribed, I fully support your mindset and I've been on the same journey of avoiding alcohol and eating out.
Hi Christina belated birthday wishes 🎂🎉🎊 I am doing a religious Daniel fast this February ( 21 days of eating only plant based foods and drinking water ) and this year I included in my fasting period a no buy February as well ( no clothes, makeup, skincare or nailpolish) those items are my vices, but I will do a full month on the no buy.I am currently on day 5 and it is going well 🙂 Looking forward to the rest of the month and are thoroughly enjoying your journey on pairing down and minimilist living lots of love from South Africa 🇿🇦
I love your ideas for challenges
❤
LOVE your hair here and winter white.
Congratulations! It would be fun to also hear what you didn’t buy during the month, and how much you saved because you didn’t spend. Thanks!
I've been approaching the low/no-buy as a weekly challenge so that accumulating the weekly successes has been very rewarding! I've had to break the no-buy a few times as I will be starting a new job so some purchases like formal shoes had to be made. Disappointment outweighed by excitement for such an opportunity!!
This is a GREAT approach!
I'm watching this video now, i'ts november and I decided to challenge myself on this month. Thanks for sharing your experience and inspire me!
omg im trying yo stop my shopping addiction and i will try your notes app thing
I tried this from a "master wish list" purchaser, where I have a master list that I divide items across each month of the year, prioritizing things I want/need to purchase for the current year and letting things that aren't considerably missed be a future year's purchase. I started this because I noticed my monthly purchases/expenses climbing since getting permanent work (however I have a scheduled savings amount withdrawn each month for investments and I stuck to my own savings plan each month).
This felt hard, but I have no regrets. There are items I have had on my wish list for at least 6 months or more, and they finally came in a style/size/colour/were in stock that I like in January (faded black high rise wide leg jeans). There were also items that were low in stock AND on sale that I needed for upcoming event/strips (an evening appropriate bag, running shoes, bralettes). And then there were things that have been a nice to have/want that I just took the plunge and got - i.e. a new piercing, a new pair of jeans.
I think I always thought when people say they've "waited awhile for an item" they wait at least 6 months if not years (like I've been doing), when in reality timelines can be just a couple of weeks. That realization fed into some of these purchase decisions. A major contributor to spending when I said I wouldn't was also realizing I saved significantly more than I planned last year; it helped me loosen my constraints. I was stuck in a pretty strict constraints mode - I was injured for at 2 years with no/variable income and no real interest in expressing myself (something I'm very glad to have recovered), I was a student, and then Covid meant no socializing. My wardrobe was seriously lacking fun things, and I love wearing fun things! I was stuck in wardrobe staples and basics purchasing. Having worked consistently for the past 2 years with a steady income, finally going out with friends, and planning my first international travel in 10 years kind of just clicked something into gear and I'm enjoying my purchases and expressing myself. I'm not going overboard and I believe this will die down after February, but I'm enjoying it now. I just don't think January was the right month to stick to a no buy but I'm glad I tried it.
well done and great ideas
Oh, you're so lucky you could get hold of the book! I am on the waiting list ;-)
Haha I leapt
Happy belated birthday! You did well and were rewarded with Tibi super discount :)
Haha I’m super stoked about that!
I too want to do a no buy month in the near future. As I can see, this is kinda common, but initially I had the mindset "i spend so much money on stuff i don't need, so let me punish myself by not spending money at all". But as any habit, this has to go gradually, step by step. And now I want to do this because I want to slow down, have some space for thoughts, and to actually use the stuff I already have. With things like this you really have to know your exact goal and reason to keep going.
My hubby and i are going to be alternating no/low buy months. We just have to much and end up donating a lot every year. We want to do things to our home and travel more. We want to become more intentional in what we bring into our lives.
That blazer on you ✨️
As a newish Tibi fan (started last spring) I knew about the timings for sale and fundaments/spring drop so I was concentrating on a low-buy Jan to buy only WOFs … no have-to-haves and no in-and-outs. And I was able to stick with this … although there are quite a few things for Spring that look enticing. And now that Jan is over, I’m glad I didn’t purchase everything that I wanted. it’s still safely on my wish list. (Except for those shoes that went to 60% off in Feb.) Book is really helping me NOT buy just because I can.
You did very well. I have been on a low buy for about 3 years now and have really got used to only buying what I need. I researched Amy Smilovic and what an amazing and interesting woman. I have been binge watching whatever I can find on her. Thanks for introducing her to us! 👍
I am a new member here. I like the idea. I will give it a try but I think other than groceries I really haven't bought anything this year.
I had a great no buy month in January. I only made one purchase and stuck to my budget. It felt so good. I have a trip with friends to the city beginning of March. It's been great being able to save for that trip knowing I won't go into debt during the trip.
God this is so good. Going for a no buy in march 😵💫 and maybe even april.
Hey! Christina you really really made my day with this video and I love your vlogs so so much you are my inspiration and I wish you reach 200K Subscribers very very soon!💕💫😭
Continuing a low buy/no buy into 2023, due to a huge change in life direction. I’m spending time going through all the stuff in my house and minimizing, taking long walks, building my new business, networking, spending time on business and personal correspondence. And putting any persistent wants on the wish list for later. Oh! And using what I have, which is plenty, turns out.
Christina, could you work on decluttering a bedroom?
I spent less but did not completely have a no buy January for clothes and make up related items. I was able to greatly lower my shopping budget monthly overall for this year. I did buy a couple of clothing and personal items and one make up brush that put me over the $25 gift card amount I had. I’m still trying to lower my budgets and decide which items like cleaning supplies where I need to categorize those under in my Mint budget app. I need to work on better ways to treat myself in free ways so I don’t feel I’m depriving myself.
Houuu ! A coffee with Alyssa …lucky girl! Bravo Christina you’ re doing great what path? Bravo really you should be proud ! Big changes 🎉🎉🎉
this book is really beautiful
Btw, I love “move with Nicole.” I didn’t expect to love Pilates bc I’ve practiced yoga for over 20 yrs, but now I’ve been doing her videos 5-6x a week for almost a year!😊
I did an untintended no-buy in Jan because Dec ended up being really expensive with gifts, trips and bills. 🙈 So I just said screw it, I want to see what our finances look like if I spend nothing on unnecessary things. It was shocking. I had a few things (like maternity pants 🤪) I knew I'd have to get in February, but I did that fast and never looked at any other items or opened any of my other carts. It's actually weirdly freeing, I'm curious to see if it becomes a habit. We're moving into our new home in May, so that will probably change things quite a bit. So I'm trying to keep it up until then to see how much I can save for furnishing our home the way we truly want.
Tfs, wonderful explanations of your thoughts, but... I was always distracted: Your hair looks fantastic! The shorter cut, I think, suits you very well. Greetings from cologne
Funnily enough, I started a no buy in mid January that was prompted by an impulse order from Tibi - one sale pair of pants and one bodysuit that was on my Wishlist. I don't exactly regret it because they're beautiful and filled gaps in my wardrobe, but at the end of the day I still made the decision to spend a lot of money (our AUD exchange rate is harsh right now) on a whim.
My no buy is going through to the end of Feb, and then I'm going to have a mini shopping spree and buy a couple of items that I've put a lot of thought into. And I might then continue to do that every 2 months - save up and then have a mini splurge (which I think will be less money spent overall)
I did a low buy for the second half of 2022, and it went well! Setting the rules and clearly writing my why was the most helpful. I've struggled a bit this January since I added a few things to my wishlist during the low buy. At this point, these items have made it past the impulse buy stage and I am sure I want to buy them but the sales are over. So I keep checking if they have a sale again. I don't love that I do that. How do you monitor prices and yet not feel like you are shopping?
I was almost successful in my no buy for January 2023 but ended buying a backpack. A good choice because my back thanked me for it. :) I still consider it a success. Thank you for your previous video. 😊
I do too! Love it!
