+Zodiac7649 dudes in the front heard it before it was released:) and actually I liked the song much better without the MGMG-like drop tho this is hardly a flawless version. I absolutely loved it when I heard it live and then they made it too dancey for me on the album. the part from 4:57 is pretty much flawless.
Yeah I know (since this concert was like 2 years[?] before that album released). I was just referring to how their jumping kinda looked like they were expecting that build-up to lead into a huge drop, but once it mellowed out, they stopped like "Oooookay, nevermind." lol. That's just how it appeared though. And yeah, I agree. Although I love the album version, I like how this version keeps that steady orchestral kind of vibe; its relaxing as fuck lol.
This kind of music you have to feel inside. When u not feeling it, u think it sucks. The people in the audience feel it, you can see it on their faces, and they start to dance a little with it. I love this kind of music, because I feel it inside me :)
New to Animal Collective but their work is growing on me as I listen to them more. Love so much this performance, these mans have such a strong passion for music and a unique musical langage, this is a work of art !!
I have a particular fondness for these videos. The first time I ever heard these songs back 07. Still sing the old set of lyrics sometimes too. If you want to hear the album live put on your headphones, if you want to see something different and mindblowing see them live. This is when the material was fresh and new to them, Panda is still using 303s there, no lightshow either. I love hearing the barebones of their songs, fuckin amazes me how they build them in studio.
No, man they kept it like this, I saw them on the tour for Merryweather Post Pavillion and they just don't drop the bass. I don't know why, but they don't drop the bass for live versions of my girls.
@@krusher181 I think the sound of that album has a lot to do with the co-producer they brought in, Ben H. Allen, who had a background in hip hop. The band said they brought him in specifically to help with the low end. So that probably had an influence on the discrepancies between the studio and live versions.
i think people's comments are too harsh on the crowd. this was a new song at the time, no one had heard it before. it's hard to get into a song and just start dancing and shit when it's the first time you've ever heard it and don't know the structure, especially with a band like this.
I'm gonna have to disagree with all people saying they aren't good at playing this live, or it sounds shitty live. I think it sounds good. It doesn't sound as energetic, but it's still good. REAL damn good. REAL FUCKING GOOD.
honestly, it sounds great, having listened to the studio version first, i can sing to it and it sounds like them and they are putting feeling into it so whats the problem lol
Everyone enjoys a show in their own way. I've been crazy as shit and as calm as shit on different shows, it just depends of the moment, doesn't mean i'm not having fun or i'm trying to get attention. Just enjoy the music.
I think it sounds good. Their songs aren't easily recreated live, for one...two, why would you want to hear a band play the song exactly the way they do on an album? I like when bands bring something else to it or perform a song in a different way.
He is playing drums in a literal sense but he is hardly laying down a rhythm. It's two hits and a cymbal crash. No reason to sit down without a kick drum.
@Rael0505 The group have not done drugs since recording Strawberry Jam, and that album was completed before this show. As for "the guy with the drumsticks", he's just good ol' eccentric Avey, who never played high since 2004. It's easy to see why many would call this a poor performance but I got so familiar with this version of the song that I was initially disappointed by its MPP re-working. The instrumentals here are minimal and you sort of mentally implant your own block-rocking beat.
man thats the second time i got a cool reply from someone under this video. thanks for the perspective. im usually impressed with the europeans i meet. they seem to have their feet planted. that could explain the vibe in this crowd here. plant footed.
@MillaHead The album was released in 2009, but the album was recorded a year before it came out. Plus, bands tend to play new songs live before they come out on disc
They’re awesome. But most of the crowd is just lame. I’m impressed. This is an amazing live performance. But maybe I’m just biased bc I love them 😍 & this song!
@midouespeon they wouldn't have been able to hear the "studio" version of the song because this concert predated MPP, so this was honestly probably the first time any of them had ever heard it.
yeah knuckleheads. well put. i do need to broaden my scope with wide travel. i have seen all of america but only have montreal and toronto to compare it to, but i gotta say, those are the two best north american cities.
stop hating people. if youll watch through alot of AC live stuff, they get bored so they play around. just watch the video of them performing Summertime Clothes on Letterman
OK I've seen enough vids of my girls and i see the same thing. The vocals on the studio version are way to processed to reproduce live and most importantly there is a lack of bass and depth which are the main things that bring the songs to life. I'll love the lyrics no matter what.
@Rael0505 If you wanna know what AC look like when on drugs then just look up a few of their pre-2004 concerts on CZcams, most notably a hilarious rendition of "Essplode" that was done in 2001. And I don't know if they do "heavy" drugs. Salvia and a few psychedelic meds were their poison and Panda was experimenting with morphine back in 2004 or so but otherwise, they've grown up. And this set would be a mess when not played with a sober mind.
it's seeming like this band's music is best not played live. i can't even look at the guy in the black tanktop.. he's getting way into this song when not much is happening. the record version is tight though.
wow, like if i took an acordian a triangle and some drums down to the basement with two buddies, i could have 75,000 views on youtube I guess. this was crummy, yo!
smshah232 there's a bunch of stuff they don't add until later when they come to recording. This was about a year before they recorded the song in the studio. They added the bass line at that point I guess.
I thought I'd wait a year before replying, to signify the year gap between this video and the recording of the song. it's very deep and meaningful of me.
@WheresPoochie Haha I made a mistake of calling psychedelics heavy, for that I apologize. I'd honestly say this set was a mess whether they're on drugs or not, though. Love their studio stuff, not so much their live stuff. Sorry man, but I just can't believe they're not on anything for this show.
@NicoMD For me, this song is decent live. Vocals are occasionally out of key (which can be improved), but short of digital harmonizers, adding more vocalists, or using prerecorded tracks, there's no way to really achieve the studio layers. With that said, the studio vocals stunningly beautiful. In the end, I can live with this. OTOH, every live version, that I've heard, of Lion in a Coma has terrible vocals, which kills it for me.
love the two guys in the audience partying it up by themselves.
4:36 Dudes in the front were waiting for that epic drop....and how disappointed were they lmao

The vocals sound great... Also, Animal Collective always likes doing different things in concert.
this is the early version of the song i think recorded in 2007.
Vocals are even worst live than their albums
I can't believe people think this is music. Delusional fucking idiots
New to Animal Collective but their work is growing on me as I listen to them more. Love so much this performance, these mans have such a strong passion for music and a unique musical langage, this is a work of art !!
I miss this time. For the first time in my life and in recent history, we can all look back with confidence and say, yes it was better back then.
That was then this is now.

some hipsters would argue that this is the most pure version of the song
Excellence97 well that’s because it is
iiwu xi thank you 😊. Amen 🙏.
Tjis is the live version, I actually haven't seen them drop the bass when playing this live. I know it's weird lol
Lmao check the other comments
Well yeah
Thank. You.
Especially since this was 2007...no-one knew this damn song,
Every time I listen to this song I look over at my indoor grow room and smile.

Like I've just never seen anyone THAT happy before hah, what a legend :)
how could you think this is terrible
this is the first way i heard it and it still sounds the best
@scottamcmahan Keep in mind, this performance was from 2007. It grew from this into what you're familiar with on MPP.
I dont think people have any idea how hard it is to get several samplers being played by 3 different people to match up
EXACTLY
It’s amazing to think they were even able to replicate the sound of the instruments live!
Yeah but, turn up the bass??
Man this takes me back to my high school days!
Thanks fellas!! Whata beautiful ending to that song 🎵 ✨️fr fr sparks n'sh✨️T ❤
My girls was great live when I saw them in Orlando.
Wish i was there!! 👏
Im in love
Raven Nicolee Me too! Avey and Panda are melting me! 😍
wild they went dry on the vocals
no one knew this song yet! merriweather didnt come out until 2009, maybe that's why people aren't as into it
magnificent
Saw them last night in Milwaukee...so damn good
wow... 414...
I was supposed to see them in the NYC last August but we just moved and couldn’t afford it. Then they stopped touring. I’m jealous big time
❤
that guy with the white shirt and brown hat at 3:21 made my day. he's getting so into it hahaha
He's loving it :)!
The synth is so light and fluttery compared to the studio version
I wish a studio version with this synth was released as well as the original, sounds awesome!
when the sticks first came in they tripped me the fuck out
I wpuldnt pay to see the dude and the green shirt keep his eyes closed all song. Shot out to the dude in the hat
