  • With mast flotation to prevent turtling, recovering from a capsize is easy in the Flying Scot. Of course things are easier in mild practice conditions. It gets more complicated in rough conditions where a real world capsize is more likely. #sailing, #flyingscot, #capsize

I used to own a Lightning and was always concerned that I would never get it righted after a capsize.
The Flying Scott seems quite a bit easier to right.

doesn't work like that in real life. You never capsize a flying scot in calm conditions. It takes high winds and big mistakes to flip these things. When they do capsize you have very little chance of recovery. The sails get go under and hold the boatn down while the waves wash over the seat. The boat sinks. It's a mess. THen you have to take the sails and the mast off under water and tow it into shallow water while it's underwater. Most unpleasant experience.
I"ve done this quite a few times. Never actually flipped one myself though.

One thing I've seen done for boats like the Goat Island Skiff is build floatation into the sides of the boat. Prevents such floundering.
