Penn and Teller Go Public - Part 1. This is the version that went out on Channel 4 on 28th December 1986. From The MagicWeek Video Archive www.magicweek.co.uk
Holy f***, this is like the magic equivalent of finding your favourite bands' demo tapes. You know all the songs, but you've never heard them before they were refined and finalized.
Alright, got my computer hooked to my capture card, and the output hooked through my HDMI to RCA adapter and into the VCR and the VCR hooked into my old CRT.... Lets do this!
I'm by no means an expert on this type of thing. But all my 80s electronic gear just had single-connection RF/Coax and only later gear, in the 90s - came with those Red/White/Yellow RCA cables. That's Australia though, I think those cables were more common in the USA.
+shadow5904, now, in all of that 'fancy' set up to make it more 'authentic' are you using an old "Master Piece Theater" tape which will prolly have the flicker lines to add more to the 'ancient' and 'secretiveness' of the illusion(s) due to what those lines will cover to make it harder to make it harder to figure out the tricks on your own when all you have access to is this tape or are you using a somehow totally undegraded tape that will make it seem like it will ruin the authenticity of you trying to copy a recording from that time!?!
It's not that punk when you realize Penn and Teller are raging hypocrites. They made a career out of exposing famous magic tricks and sleights, but sued a magician for over half a million fucking dollars when he exposed how Teller's "Shadows" was done.
@@IskeletuBr No I'm not. Teller sued a magician for performing shadows. Because you're unable to copyright a magic trick he got away with this by claiming a copyright to pantamining, which is protected under intellectual property. It's true the magician was selling the way the trick was done, but this isn't illegal and Teller couldn't sue him for this. As a result, he literally sued him for copying the trick, because he used pantamining during the performance. Because the trick can't even be performed without a pantamime, this makes the trick impossible to perform without copyright infringement. I'm not misrepresenting shit. This is exactly what happened. And it's a bold fucking move from a magician pairing whose acts are basically entirely comprised of stealing tricks from older, more talented magicians. Like Teller's second most famous trick, "the east indian needle trick." Which is one of Houdini's most famous performances.
DracoHandsome yeah and sometimes someone will come on and try to fool them with a trick they invented. Like the card trick they showed how to do some guy actually thought he could fool them with it
And they know what to repeat and what not to repeat. Some tricks remain too topical for future tries, but they're fun to do on some people who actually never heard of them (or for your own personal enjoyment and research). I actually own both the Beta Hi-Fi and VHS Hi-Fi releases of _Cruel Tricks for Dear Friends,_ and it is dated as all hell, but fun to watch.
they're 7 years apart penn was born in 55 teller was born in 48 teller should be 70 now. and penn 63 they started doing magic in 1975 which should be almost 44 years ago today.
They were way ahead of their time. Everything about the way he speaks and in terms of the act itself. Top notch stuff even compared to todays entertainment.
I saw them in 2016... still amazing. and STILL doing 7-steps bit "Palm, Switch, Simulation, Misdirection, Load, Steal, Ditch..." Teller does it so well, it never gets old.
Watching the evolution of the act really outlines the fact that P&T were clearly stars in the making. The enhancement of the 'seven principles of magic' (now with music) is pure art and beautiful to watch, even in its infancy. It'll be a sad day when these guys are no more yet they'll be they'll be remembered like Dunninger, Houdin, Keller and Vernon. And they'll all pick the 3 of clubs regardless!
“Meme” was coined by the often controversial evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins in his 1976 book, The Selfish Gene. ... The Greek word “mimeme” he derives “meme” from comes from the Ancient Greek μίμημα (mīmēma), meaning “that which is imitated” / “something imitated” / “something copied”. I've read that book twice, absolutely fantastic explanation for biodiversity that really holds a deeper explanation than how most people interpret evolution and ecology concepts. I first read it in 2009 before the whole internet craze for memes exploded.
So awesome to see this in full quality. Insanely rare to see stuff from before the 90s in this kind of quality. Must be the original broadcast footage.
I remember watching a copy of a copy of KCET’s broadcast of this in early 1988. That videotape somehow made it’s way to Philadelphia, and my friend somehow got his hands on it and made another copy. Back before youtube and the internet, and before things were broadcast everywhere, all the time or on demand, thats’s how things got around the country. And you were either cool or just lucky to know someone who knew someone, who had a copy. I was definitely just lucky.
When Jillette first began performing, his mother told him to get a manicure because people would be looking at his hands. In response to this, he had all of his nails painted red as a joke. The one remaining red fingernail is in memory of his mother
@@SatoshiKong yeah, but Steve had to switch to producing. Penn and Teller still perform as their main gig. Not that I don't like myself some Rapeman or Shellac every now and then...

Absolute Legends man. people don't understand how much of a household names these 2 used to be. I used to live, think, and sleep these guys when I was young
So happy I came across this. I’ve seen their live show at the Rio in Vegas and they are amazing to watch. That said, after the show they wait in the lobby for meet and greets and photos and I have them, albeit too dark and wish I had good ones. They are awesome and if you’re ever in Vegas go see their show, it’s great and they are by far the best magicians I’ve seen who’re honest about their craft.
19:38 I love how when Penn says "we will show you" and the applause cuts him off, after saying "we will show you", Penn steps to the side to reveal the I guess "name tag" that says "you" on it xD It was probably an accident but it's quite funny.
Punk covers of poetry...gets me every time. Especially when done Acapella. These 2 are some of the greatest show people of all time and have been for a long time. Old shows, new shows, they're all solid. I've never wanted to see a Vegas show but I'll see em next time I'm out West for sure.
You have to appreciate people who let you in on the secrets something as simple as telling people “get your blank VHS tapes ready” is just fucking amazing.
Ladies and Gentleman, Chris Farley at 0:05, no, wait, thats Penn Jillette...... or is all part of the act that Farley is being a ventrilloquist through Penn??
Funny about the card trick they showed how to do because several years later on there show fool us a guy came on performing that exact trick only he added a second person to the mix. Of corse it did not fool them. I just finished watching that show before i stubled onto this one lol. He tride to fool them with a trick they invented.
They also performed that exact bit on the show, asking people to DVR a segment and everything. But no, I don't think they invented the trick, I venture to guess it's as old as dirt.
Its funny because Penn's voice has changed heaps over the years but Teller sounds exactly the same.
Teller is really, really good with his ventriloquism.
hahaha
Sounds.
Baldo Metal this guy 😂🤦♂️
That was exactly what I was going to mention. It was the first thing I noticed.
Penn and Teller: Making fun of 80's effects in the actual 80's.
Making fun of bad effects.
hello squid
Time traveller.
They were just making fun of effects.
That’s meta
Penn had the ponytail in the front back then
Slasher3240 9
You seem like a school deserter.
That's what 20 years of driving in a topless car will do XD
That's what happens as you grow old, your hair moves to the back...
That's not the ponytail. At this time he was modelling the "rhapsody in velcro" incorporating the "burnt pop tart."
1985: You will want to make sure your video cassette recorder is on for this part of the show.
2019: I'm glad SOMEBODY did!

@@MagicWeekVideoArchive No problem! I'm refining the trick in a way to make it my own now, and can't wait to show it off!

Theniyaal Ali lol yes
like #223 LOL and i agree
I agree. They've gotten so much more experienced (obviously)
I love this analogy!
IDK, I almost liked Misdirection better here than with Penn playing bass.
I’m realizing now that Teller is a magician, Penn is just a distraction 😂
that's called misdirection
They both swop rolls. Depending on the trick. But yes normally Penn distracts. But both are master magicians
It's funny because most people think that which actually lets Penn get away with much more.
