    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Tony (Richard Beymer) sings of his newfound love for Maria (Natalie Wood).
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
Romeo and Juliet is updated to the tenements of New York City in this Oscar-winning musical landmark. Adapted by Ernest Lehman from the Broadway production, the movie opens with an overhead shot of Manhattan, an effect that director Robert Wise would repeat over the Alps in The Sound of Music four years later. We are introduced to two rival street gangs: the Jets, second-generation American teens, and the Sharks, Puerto Rican immigrants. When the war between the Jets and Sharks reaches a fever pitch, Jets leader Riff (Russ Tamblyn) decides to challenge the Sharks to one last "winner take all" rumble. He decides to meet Sharks leader Bernardo (George Chakiris) for a war council at a gymnasium dance; to bolster his argument, Riff wants his old pal Tony (Richard Beymer), the cofounder of the Jets, to come along. But Tony has set his sights on vistas beyond the neighborhood and has fallen in love with Bernardo's sister, Maria (Natalie Wood), a love that, as in Romeo and Juliet, will eventually end in tragedy. In contrast to the usual slash-and-burn policy of Hollywood musical adaptations, all the songs written by Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim for the original Broadway production of West Side Story were retained for the film version, although some alterations were made to appease the Hollywood censors, and the original order of two songs was reversed for stronger dramatic impact. The movie more than retains the original choreography of Jerome Robbins, which is recreated in some of the most startling and balletic dance sequences ever recorded on film. West Side Story won an almost-record ten Oscars, including Best Picture, supporting awards to Chakiris and Rita Moreno as Bernardo's girlfriend, Anita, and Best Director to Robbins and Wise. Richard Beymer's singing was dubbed by Jimmy Bryant, Natalie Wood's by Marni Nixon (who also dubbed Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady), and Rita Moreno's by Betty Wand. The film's New York tenement locations were later razed to make room for Lincoln Center.

What I especially like is the fakt that the music shifts to a soft minor key when he says the line you refered to. The first time "Say it loud and there's music playing" is a major key. This aria is a beautiful example when the music was written in accordance to the text. Bernstein is just a genius!

I can't get over the fact that Maria, after knowing Tony only *ONE DAY*, still goes with him RIGHT after he murdered her brother. Seriously - she knew Tony for ONE DAY - and in the Spielberg version, they make it even worse with the fact that he almost killed someone BEFORE - so basically, she chooses to go with a violent murderer who just got out of prison, who killed her brother, after knowing the guy for just 24 hours. lol I mean, love at first sight? Okay, fine, but good Lord. lol

"Say it loud and there's music playing, say it soft and it's almost like praying" is one of my favorite lyrics EVER. It's not only incredibly beautiful, but it's smart. Maria is a biblical name, of course sounds like praying. And how the music matches the lyrics is just SO beautiful. I swear this is THE MOST romantic song ever done! And the dichotomy of both Marias in Tony's mind, the Maria that is exciting and flamboyant like music; and the calm, innocent, catholic Maria. Just perfect.

@Jackie Garcia Richard Beymer's voice is dubbed by another person for the singing parts because he couldn't sing well, this was common for musicals of the time. Natalie Wood doesn't sing either. Beymer was a nice guy though and always made sure to credit the real singer during interviews.

    • @ifeelpretty5790
      @ifeelpretty5790 Před 5 lety +81

midnight kitsune Aw that was nice of him. I feel bad for Natalie Wood though, she didn't know her voice was going to be completely dubbed and despite all the vocal training she went through, her voice still wasn't strong enough for the complex songs. At least she got to sing in Gypsy, Louise's vocal range is a lot simpler than Maria's range.
It's a shame that many ghost singers didn't get the credit they deserved at the time. Marni Nixon, who dubbed Natalie Wood in West Side Story, also dubbed Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady and Deborah Kerr in The King and I. Unlike Wood and Hepburn, Kerr knew beforehand that she was going to be dubbed and she even worked alongside Nixon to make sure her speaking voice sounded similar to Nixon's singing by acting out the songs in front of her so their character choices would be the same.

My dear friend Jimmy Bryant, rest in peace, provided the singing voice for Richard Beymer and just knocked it all out of the park. He was totally believable as an actor singer yet sang every note pitch perfect. I miss you, my friend. West Side Story simply holds up. I’m writing this in May 2024

Wonderful musical, wonderful song, the plot is poignant. Many years ago, when I was thirteen, I am sixty-five, I only liked math, I was not romantic. Then my father bought me the thirty-three laps with the West side story soundtrack and explained the plot and the meaning of the songs to me. Then my name is Maria. I have since learned to appreciate romance as well. Hearing this song gives me chills, my father then died the following year. I was fourteen. what beautiful memories. My father was born on the fourteenth of September, I on the same day, thirty-one years later. 🌹❤️

"West Side Story" was like a modern-day urban version of "Romeo and Juliet." Instead of being from rival families, the young couple in this story were from rival communities in New York City. It is one of the most romantic movies I've ever seen, although it is most unfortunate that it has a tragic ending to it. Then again, "Romeo and Juliet" ended tragically also. Therefore, I cannot really criticize the person who wrote the script to this movie of doing anything out of line.

After 62 years still love this song & remember every word. Still can't hit the high notes. Jimmy Bryant (amazing voice), dubbed every note for Tony (played by Richard Beymer) and Marni Nixon dubbed for Natalie Wood (Maria). Both singers (dubbers) received no credit and relatively little pay.

The imagery in this scene is full of subtle, brilliant details. The camera is bathed in a pink light that matches the moment in the overture when “Maria” starts playing and the screen turns pink. The sides of the image are slightly blurred as Tony first starts singing - a clever technique used in many of Tony and Maria’s interactions throughout the film to visualize the fantasy world into which their passion transports them. And after you’ve seen the whole film, rewatching the shot of Tony singing in the playground is heartbreaking, because the very next night, he will die in Maria’s arms in that very playground.

Please give credit to Jimmy Bryant! It is his voice that Breymer (who plays Tony) is lip synching to here. Bryant did all of the singing for Breymer, and did not get a screen credit, or big money.
Marni Nixon was the voice for Natalie Wood, and had to fight the studio to get any royalties. (Bernstein ended up giving her a .25 percentage of his record royalties, so she did ok).
The true brilliance of this musical movie is in the perfection of lip synching. No one in 1961 had any idea that so many of the stars were being dubbed by other singers. They were lip synching in just about every number. Even the great Rita Moreno was dubbed by Betty Wand and Nixon in most of her numbers. (In fairness, Moreno got sick, and one of her numbers required a much lower octave. It was Moreno singing in that great number “America”, that had such great choreography and dancing.)
I mention this only because it puzzles me when we get all out of joint when we find out that singers were lip synching nowadays. The greatest musical movie of all time, West Side Story; which won 11 Academy Awards in 1961; was all lip synching to ghost singers. Did it matter? I would say “absolutely not”!
There should have been an Academy award for the best ghost singers! Jimmy Bryant and Marni Nixon would have 3 or 4 each!

This is a brilliant song. It was dubbed for this 1961 film. I just heard Amsel Elgort sing Maria - he is Tony in the 2021 film - and he lacks the strength of the singer who dubbed Tony in 1961. And he leaves out the series of Maria's that are most taxing for the voice. That is the true test of a tenor in this great song, or aria. But dubbing is no longer done, and Spielberg chose the best young actor who could sing creditably to play Tony in the new film. Amsel Elgort sings well, but the professional tenor who did the 1961 recording was great!

I watched this version and the 2021 version back to back. Even though Richard Beymer wasn't singing his own vocals, the original version (this one, the 1961 version) trumps the 2021 version, despite what a wonderful singer Ansel Elgort is -- and he really is an excellent singer.
The 2021 version included several jokes (the janitor was the best one, looking at Tony like, "Ooookay, brother") -- but the jokes weren't needed. In the 1961 version, everyone fades into the background and Tony walks the streets singing Maria's name. It gets to me every time. Fantastic.
