Hello friends, in this video I'll be reviewing the Pentax 67 MLU, going over what makes is so special and unique. I'll be going over all its flaws, why getting a Pentax 6x7 with Mirror Lock-Up might be a good idea, and how shooting a medium format negative might be a good thing for your picture making. I'll also be going over the weaknesses of this camera, things like shutter vibration and camera shake.
If you're a film photographer looking for an amazing medium format camera that uses 120 film, then this video is for you. The lenses used on the Hasselblad were the SMC Super Takumar 105mm F2.4 and the SMC Super Takumar 75mm F4.5.
If you're interested in other 67 cameras, like the Pentax 67ii, Mamiya 7, Mamiya 7ii, or even the Mamiya RB67 or Mamiya RZ67, then you might find this video interesting as well.
All the black and white pictures in this video were made with Ilford HP5, Delta 400 and Delta 3200, developed on Ilfotec HC on the AXLE CR1 Rotary Processor. The other 120 black and white film stocks I use are Delta 400 and FP4+.
The colour pictures were Kodak Gold 200 in 120, Kodak Portra 160 and Kodak Ektar 100. I use other film stock as well, Fujifilm PRO160NS and PRO400H.
If you enjoyed this Pentax 6x7 review, and you love film photography and shooting color film too, join me on this analog journey here on CZcams. Thanks for watching!
    Peace,

Great video. Your opening sentences are wonderfully eloquent while the critique of the Pentax seems entirely objective and fair, as far as can be judged from other reviews of the 67 online. I have never used one of these myself. In your request for purity in camera design, though, did you ever consider the Fujica GL690 which is a 6x9 interchangeable lens rangefinder camera and which is therefore generally simpler in concept? I bought one, together with three lenses, a few weeks ago and am very impressed by its image quality and relative portability. Also, with its absence of vibration when shooting, obtaining pin-sharp images hand-held has not been a problem so far.

Thank you for this video. You describe my attraction to the 67 perfectly. The whole picture taking experience (let’s not forget the glorious sound!) is heightened to new levels through the direct simplicity of the machine. I have had success down to 1/30 of a second handheld with the 105mm in a dark corner of a motorcycle museum, though breathing technique and firing between heartbeats helps greatly.
When I first bought my 67, I sent it out for a thorough refurb from a widely respected Pentax technician in the US (Eric). Maybe this helped with low speed shutter vibe??
I’m not looking to sell my system anytime soon!

Thanks for the recommendation! Yes I didn’t consider this…
Could I get his contact? I’ll try sending my Pentax to him!

I have the 67 with mirror lock up. I don't think I am seeing the vibration issues you talk about if I use the lock up unless it is an overly windy day. I have even used my 300f4 ED and 400f4 ED with tubes for higher magnification with definitely sharp results. I would guess that this would have been a failure for Pentax if it had this issue over half its shutter range. I actually had more troubles with shutter slap on my OM system bodies and Sony bodies if I did not use the electronic shutter when mounted to a lens with a tripod foot.

That B&W photo at 12:59. Love it.
I wonder if the slow shutter speed shake is a per camera issue. Almost as if something is off in the camera causing shake.
Besides the 6x7 weight I HATE the batteries. so weird Hard to find in a normal store if you need one.
Other than that I LOVE the 105mm lens. When you nail focus ....angels descend and start singing.

The P6x7 is a real joy to use. And the vibration is, I suppose a body to body or people to people, issue. I've taken portraits on dim light with the 35mm f4.5 with an average tripod at a 1/4 sec turned out sharp. I've also shot hand held vertical portraits during a live show with the 105 at 1/30 that turned out sharp too. Once I had to take portraits indoors with the 105 at half a second or slowee + mirror lock up : was sharp too. But I have failed photographing a tree at 1/60 in daylight 😂 Looked fine from afar, but whenever I zoom in on my dslr scan I can see my shakiness or the mirror slap vibration taking the sharpness away.

Love mine. Use it only with the waistlevel finder though as the eyepieces of the finders of the 6x7 and 67 use thorium glass and are thus radioactive. Easy to check with a geiger counter whether yours is hot.

I used to own and love the P67, M7 and Hassy 503 CXI for the same reasons as you; Details.
But then I discovered the Zeiss Otus lenses 55mm and 100mm and they gave me the medium format look I was always looking for after pushing my film which is; the 35mm look with MF details.
I never Print bigger than 14x17 but mostly at 11x14.
I discovered them cuz I saw some prints from the Zeiss Otus on 35mm Film and I was convinced they were MF… my was laughing and told me it’s from 35mm.
I did all sorts of comparisons and finally came to the conclusion that am happy with the 35mm high end lenses Zeiss Otus and Leica Apo.
I sold all my MF cameras start of 2020 and never looked back. I now do all my photography on 35mm with high end lenses. I only shoot B&W.
The Zeiss Otus 100mm f1.4 gives me more MF look than the MF cameras I had. They are sharper than MF or LM lenses only limited by 35mm film format.

Wow. How do you find the Ziess Otus compared to Leica APO?

I really loved the results from the huge beast, especially with 104/2.4. It is truely unique one that is not replicable unless you go down the large format route. But I sold it few years ago because of the chain issue. That silly buttons that releases the prism always engage when I try to take out the camera from my billingham. It was so irritating... Also I counldn't see the needle far down when wearing eyeglasses.. I really wanted to get non-metered prism but they were very scarse here during that time.
But I have never experienced shaking issue you mentioned, even though I was using very clumsy tripod at that time. There are also many around me who used pentax 67 for years and they never mentioned about that. Not sure what's happening with your pentax..

    • @jeremy-t

Yes.. That MLU button is irritating.. haha! The shake issue is a finicky thing..

Nice video on the Pentax 67 which I adore.
If anyone back in SG wants to change their focusing screen, there's people in the UK that does it however it does cost a penny!

I see youre shooting the Heidosmat 150/2.8 on your 45. do you shoot with it wide open and how is the center sharpness?

    • @jeremy-t
      @jeremy-t  Před 6 měsíci +1

Hey! The one I have doesn't have a built in aperture.. It barely covers 4x5 so the edges aren't great, the center is just about acceptable. haha!

  • @anta40
    @anta40 Před 2 měsíci +2

The best 6x7 camera for handheld portrait shoot? Yep I believe.
Mamiya RB & RZ are certainly very capable cameras, but not that ergonomic for handheld shooting. Better put it on tripod.
And the Mamiya 7 is... well, fine for landscape or documentary/street shots, but probably not the proper choice for macro and long tele lens.

The first thing I did when I got mine used was to change the light seals and along with the kit came a new mirror foam which absorbs the mirror slap vibration. If you're getting blurry images below 125 I would look at the condition of that foam first. I have shot mine at slow as 1/30 handheld without issue, same with focusing, my eyes aren't as good as they used to and this has been one of the easiest to focus for me.
