      @MattsOffRoadRecovery Matt yo will probably want to use the same setup as a skid steer. The Hydraulic Nematic pump system is the safest and most responsive system to have for steering on tracks. I mean they the same system in the A1-Abrums Military Tanks and those things will do over 70MPH off Road. Plus finding that system isn't hard just look for a broken down old skid steer for sale and harvest yourself a new to you Hydraulic Nematic stick seer setup. No More Levers... lol. Ok well I hope this helps you out. Plus Guys the Bomb-Bee Looks and Sounds AWESOME!!! Peace out and all that good stuff.😉

    I build tank drive systems in my work for autonomous and human controlled robots.
    Watching the Bombi trying to steer, it looked like the biggest issue was that the entire track has the same (similar) ground pressure front to rear.
    We have found you really need the center (front to rear center) to have more ground pressure compared to both the front and rear. This makes an absolutely HUGE difference in how much one side braking is required to steer.
    With our fixed suspension robots we have the front and rear of the tank drive at least ¼" higher per foot of distance.
    For example if we have a 4 foot wheelbase we'll have the front and rear ½" higher than the centre wheels.
    Note our robots typically only weigh about 250 lbs and a heavier vehicle on ground that gives might need a bigger offset. You'd need to experiment, but I'm certain you'll find the steering is much, much better if the front and rear of the track were raised a bit.

    • @juhalampola1954

      @@Dlawler Trucks and utes run mechanical fans because they are cheaper. Same story, different day: you want quality, you pay for it. You can literally get electric fans for V8's off the shelf. Besides, I've got a 1000w inverter hooked to the battery of my car. The reason it's that small is, that the car's a measly hybrid, so the battery only gets 90 amps. If it was a 'Murican truck, I could easily throw a 2kw unit in there and run an 800w interior fan along with a microwave oven for my mac&cheese lunch, with enough power to spare for an LED strip to blind oncoming drivers.
      I don't even care, what you're going to say about how long you've been working with cars and tech; you just revealed you don't know and don't care to know about things brought to market since you were a kid. 'Electric bad, gas good' is just one of the things you need to drop before it bites you too hard.

First one had the same problem with the brakes for turning. Second one he rigged a system that would disengage the drive when you pulled the lever back before it would activate the brake so you weren't fighting against the drive. That system worked SO much better. Hope you can get that fan problem solved before it eats through the radiator. Good job to everyone who worked on the Bombi and got it to where it is today.

If you pull it more then you start to engage the brake and get a fairly tight turn. Still wouldn't do a neutral steer where you send one track forward and the other in reverse but really don't need it.

  • @OGJEEP89
    @OGJEEP89 Před 2 měsíci +3

    Matt I got a couple simple solutions for you I've dealt with that fan issue before and the best thing to do is drill tap and put a set screw to lock it down. As for the breaking issue simply adding additional rotors and calipers to some of the other wheels and tying them into the same brake lines that you use for your primaries will greatly improve your braking on either side and save you a lot of tear down and rebuild for redesign. My buddy has a snow cat and that was what he had to do to his to make it steer easy without going hydraulic and having fluid issues in extreme cold. And another thing to remember is drum brakes offer better braking power than disc brakes which is why semi trucks still use drums instead of disks. Also drum brakes will lock up whereas disc brakes will not so you can quite literally lock down the brakes on one track while driving the other track around it.

    • @009013M3
      @009013M3 Před 2 měsíci +1

      Having personally driven and subsequently converted a *lot* of different cars from drum to disk brakes, I can tell you that you are 100% wrong about drums having more stopping power. You are also 100% wrong about the lockup. All brakes will lock up. That's the reason we had to invent anti-lock brakes, which you'll note are significantly less common on cars featuring drum brakes, though to be fair that's in large part due to age.
      Drums are an older technology that can function more reliably at lower fluid pressure levels. They also wear out much slower, meaning drastically fewer inspections. But the real reason that a lot of trucks still have them, is because a lot of our current truck fleet was built in the 70's.

    Bombi lives! Clean up the threads on that fan and glue it on with some Loctite 680 retaining compound. It'll never come off again unless you heat it to about 400F to melt the glue. (fyi, if you could find space for another diff, I can show you how to make a real tank transmission for it.)
    Also, one of your rigs needs a train whistle. It'll be perfect for all the times you setup a Jeep train to get someone out. Jeep train Toot Toot!

      @@jeremyspecce there are zillions of ways to do it but they all gear the inputs to a differential so that the output turns if the snowcat turns and is stopped when traveling straight.
      Simplest and most diy friendly config I've figured out is to chain drive the left output of the steering differential 2:1 to the left track, the case 1:1 to the right track, then drive the right output of the steering differential to steer. Adds a 4:1 reduction between the steering input and tracks, the steering differential sees high rpm, and needs a low speed high torque reversible motor to drive the steering input. Doesn't need much power because the tracks only need to spin 10-20 rpm to steer, but needs a ton of torque so it can skid the tracks. ( Verified it works with Lego but haven't figured out how to post images in CZcams comments...)

    Matt, take a minute to check behind the brass nipple that the flare of the brake line contacts in the master cylinder. If you can screw a small screw into that and pull it out with a pair of pliers, there may be a check ball behind it. It's a left-over from the days of drum brakes to keep fluid in the lines , and not having to fill and pressurize every line, every brake application. This could be the cause of your slow brake release. Honest truth from an old geezer/mechanic. Great video

    Perhaps the additional weight of the rest of the engine cover and rear deck will help give Bombi more traction. In the olden days, too rapid engine deceleration was remedied with a dashpot on the throttle linkage - like a shock absorber, it retarded the motion in the last little bit to the idle speed screw. Mo' brakes! Bigger rotors? More pots per caliper? Vacuum booster? The good parts of the Bombi were good, and it looks and sounds great! Maybe you need a winter conversion kit for the big wrecker - tracks? Kidding.

My guess is that the brakes may have twisted caliper plates, been either over-adjusted or pressure-locked, leading to dragging, then got too warm to be effective anymore. Were they standard pads? Ceramic pads will help with reducing heat fade, though the brake-pressure apply needs fixing.
