I'm with you on the engine being cactus considering the hole in the filter - If you wanna confirm that suspicion further you could always pull the sump off and look for glitter!!
it should be easily possible though to do an engine swap on it using a 2.2 or 2.4TDCi from a wreckers if you don't wanna chuck a chunk of change at Ford to send you a crate engine. The entire face of these vans is designed to come off for servicing major components so even someone with limited mechanical knowledge could fairly easily pull off an engine replacement with little more than two 3 tonne jackstands, a socket set, hammer, engine hoist, 3 crates of beer (substitute for a 500 pack of teabags if company won't let you have the beer) and a Hayne's manual.

In all fairness I’d be down for the challenge as I did do an engine swap from a 1.7 to a 1.9 on my Vauxhall Astra !
I’d have slapped a second hand engine in it but I’ve been too busy to do it. Ended up paying £2850 odd to the transit centre which ended up being an extra best part of a grand for injectors and glow plugs and power steering line. It’s on the road now with the engine rebuilt it’s done 560 miles so far so good 👌🏽.

In my mind, you need to go on a course before you mend them .

There are some really dirty twats around who don’t give a shit that vehicle looks in good nick and for the money you paid for it if you got to spend another 3 k to get it on the road it’s worth doing... 👍
