My chronic pain can lead me to slurring my speech, being unable to swallow (and as such, I drool), stumble around, and black out. It’s HUMILIATING, because you can’t do anything about it, at all. I have one (from amazon) and the thought of that thing striking bone with any oomph behind makes me shudder. It's just the centripetal force of you flicking the baton that extends it, then you have to SLAM it into really hard ground to get it back together. I've taken it apart too. I had the misfortune of living and working in the Portland area during the whole circus.
The detective that ended up with the case drew the short straw as nobody wanted to be anywhere near it. He had a collage of the mugshots of Gillooly, Eckert, and Stant photoshopped as the Three Stooges. When pressed for details he would just point to it and say “Not a normal functioning brain cell between them”. There was a firm belief Harding was the “mastermind” as the three co-conspirators were too stupid to have done it on their own.
As for Harding, the area she comes from is charitably a “predominantly white, persistently economically depressed high crime” area. She is most certainly a product of her upbringing. The saying was “you can take the girl out of southeast, but you can’t take the southeast out of the girl.
The media circus was unbelievable. In order for officers to enter the jail with an arrestee is a secured ramp that goes under the jail and to the intake area. When rumors started around the time Harding was to be taken into custody, the world media swarmed the public end of the ramp. Officers had to announce over their loudspeakers “I do not have Tonya Harding in this vehicle. I only have a run of the mill criminal” to get them to move out of the way. Their disappointment was palpable

I was around 10 and in Canada (where they take ice dancing a little more seriously) when it happened, and yea to this day I have that recording of Nancy's voice " WHY?! WHY?!" burned into my brain.

Figure skating is crazy man lol my daughter is currently skating at a high level and things get intense at competitions, even the jealousy at practice with girls she’s skated with for awhile is getting ridiculous

Hot take: that's just the nature of women. Try working in a female dominated environment. Try asking anyone who has done that if not. Get a feeling for the vibes around.

I'm surprised you didn't cover Tanya's debacle at the olympics after this issue with her shoe breaking and I think 10th place finish. I was a younger teen during this and I was actually cheering for Tonya until the attack. Did not like Nancy at all cause I thought the same things about her that you mentioned Tonya did lol. Really liked Oksana Baiul for those Olympics cause I thought she was so cute. (I was a younger teen remember lol)
