  • IDEAL Electrical introduces a new family of four different Non-Contact Voltage Testers that safely detect the presence of AC voltage. These testers are great for professional electricians and homeowners alike. They are UL and CSA listed and carry a 2-year warranty.
    The IDEAL 61-657 Dual Range and 61-647 Single Range IP67 Rated Non-Contact Voltage Testers are designed for the professional and automatically detect and indicate the presence of voltage within specified ranges. The 61-657 detects both low voltages from 12 to 50 volts AC associated with doorbells, thermostats, irrigation wiring, and other low voltage AC applications and standard voltages from 50 to 1000 volts AC via a selectable setting. The 61-647 detects standard voltages from 50 to 1000 volts AC and both testers provide non-contact detection of voltage through an antenna enclosed in plastic at the tip of the tester.
    Both testers can sustain a drop from 6.6 feet or 2 meters and provide non-contact detection of voltage by sensing the presence of the electromagnetic field present around live conductors and do not need to make direct contact to bare conductors to achieve this. The tip is illuminated by a green solid LED when powered on and switches to a red flashing LED, and an audible beep that increases in frequency as the voltage level it detects increases. They are powered by two 1.5 volt triple-A batteries and feature a flashlight in the tip, an audible function that can be disabled, a lanyard tie-off point, pocket clip, an auto power-off function, and a low battery indication.
    This sleek compact voltage indicator is designed for the electrical contractors and has a Cat IV safety rating and can be used throughout a building. It can identify hot versus neutral or ground conductors, breaks in the line of a hot conductor, or to indicate that power is off at receptacles, switches, inside electrical panels, or anywhere along the length of a conductor.
    The voltage tester can be used by pushing the power button in the middle of the tester. A solid green light verifies the tester is on and ready to use. Then verify the tester’s operation on a known voltage source before using it by placing the tip of the tester near an AC source like this outlet location to obtain a voltage indication. Voltage is indicated by the flashing red light and audible tone when testing an electrical circuit. Then test the unknown circuit to verify if the voltage is present.
    The dual range 61-657 when first powered on will automatically detect to the high range from 50 to 1000 volts indicated by the red LED light. Pressing the power button a second time will set the tester in the low range from 12 to 1000 volts indicated by the blue LED light and can be toggled between the two ranges by pressing the power button again. Both testers can be powered off by pressing and holding the power button for 3 seconds and will automatically power off after 10 minutes of inactivity.

    Would you say that this is relatively loud in comparison to other ncvt's? I've gone through several from different brands over the years, and I've only ever found one that was good and loud. It's nice when you are trying to shut off a circuit in a large building or when there are several walls in between your work area and the electrical panel to shut off circuits so I can actually hear when I've flipped the right breaker.

    I bought the 647. The battery compartment is so loose that it makes considerable sound while walking with it. wondering its only a single unit problem.

    2:12 & 3:57 -- You might look into spell checking the word 'Neutral'
    Also, the word 'Known' at 2:38 and 'Unknown' at 2:58

      I believe he said it purposely because at this stage he’s getting you familiar with the tool. To back that up he’s doing it on a covered outlet. Further proof a moment later at 3:00 he goes to an unknown hot wire to demonstrate.
