If you do more videos on other continents we can call it ‘Worldwide Willsey’ I so enjoy your teaching method and knowledge I have learned SO MUCH watching you thank you so much 😊
I thought that too.
As this probably drowned in the chat: A good stop for your Rhine cruise will be Königswinter which basically is opposite of Bonn, just across the river. There is the Burg Drachenfels (Dragon's Rock castle if one translated names 😊) which not only is the castle where ever famous Siegfried, the hero of the Nibelung saga, is said to have lived, the hill itself is part of the Siebengebirge, a chain of seven hills that are remnants of volcanos. Due to its literary connection, Drachenfels is swarmed by tourists anyway, so your cruise will probably make a longer stop there anyway and there probably will be buses taking you there. Me, I actually live less than 20 kilometres from there, but it's been bloody ages, at least 25 years, since I last was in that area, so I am not up to date.
Anyway, that place will be right up your alley. It satisfies the most touristy desires by being as kitschy as German kitsch gets, there is a really good restaurant up there (Make that: Used to be. I am not informed how things are there right now!), gives a lovely overview of the Rhine valley at Bonn and there are bits a Geologist surely will find interesting.
Some kilometres on, there is the mouth of river Ahr which had that bad flood in July 2021. As this event caused the loss of 189 lives in the region, it probably also made it into the news over at yours. Not really of geologic significance but worth a mention here.
Next site there is is Maria Laach, an abbey some 30 to 40 Km further up the river and a few kilometres west. It is located right next to Laacher See (Which is a bit of a short circuit of a name: "Laach" is old German for lake, you can hear that this term comes from the same Celtic root as the word lake, and See is German foe: lake. So "Lake Laacher See" is, well, silly.) Laacher See is one of the Maare of the Eifel, which are hilltop lakes left behind by volcano tops that have been blown away by eruptions. Laacher See formed in a caldera of this volcano's last eruption which took place some 13000 years ago. That eruption would have buried Cologne under 21 feet of ash and left behind a sediment layer as thick as one inch in the Berlin region. A _nasty_ bugger!
The permanently rising gas bubbles of volcanic origin in the lake remind us of its ongoing activity. Geologists have detected that there was an inflow to a magma chamber a few years ago, but at great depth and nobody expects an eruption any day soon, but the ground between the villages Wassenach and Gleeß near the lake has shown little rise already.
Maybe your cruise will stop somewhere near enough for you to make it there?
As I recently learnt, the landscape here has been above water level since the Devonian. The Cologne-Bonn area was situated on an island south of the Devonian Old Red continent in a channel of the Rheic ocean.
I hope this will give you a few good starting points to figure out points of interest for your stay here. Zweispurmopped also is a gmail address, so if you see anything about the area you want further infos about don't hesitate to mail me, I'll be happy to support you with infos!
Thanks for geology 101 episode 1 - Strong start!
Glad you're back.
Rewatch team! Thank you for the uptade!
Eagerly watching. Enjoy this.
Thanks on the cursor!
Good report as usual..Thanks..
Kilauea Iki 1959 I was 10 and the eruption was amazing on TV News..
2,000 ft lava skyward..
Show us where that happened..
Happy belated birthday to Erica (Erika?). As always I appreciate the update. Excellent Q&A!
Thank you Shawn for your time putting this together.
It’s always good to have you explain it all to us.
Di..Cumbria.
From Yuma, AZ, I’m here too - after the fact.😊
Hi Shawn I missed the live chat but I've wondered if Grindavik is having more faults opening up since the latest eruption? It does seem that the town may never be inhabited in the future. Thanks for the great commentary and I was able to get some of those Iceland links. I am one of those who watch the live cameras, it's a bit like watching a fireplace:)
Aloha from Hawai’i island. Mauna Loa summit webcam caught the eruption start, it shows up as an orange glow. The eruption just paused at 3:09pm HST
Great report, Shawn. Thanks so much!
Looking forward to 101 as totally a novice but always been interested in Geology.
Hello from Adelaide Australia 🇦🇺
Thank you, Shawn, and Happy Birthday to Mrs Willsey.
Thank you again, Shawn! Great live session, as always :) Really looking forward to watching your new Iceland videos and eagerly waiting for your next Geology 101 lesson! Hoping you will record your talk in Boise and post it on your YT channel for those of us far away, maybe...? Cute little pink dino by the multi-talented @MandieJo! ;)
Hi there. While on the family reunion trip check out the Charleston Bump. Would love to hear your take on how it affects the Gulf Stream path.
Really enjoy the Hawaii update.
Thanks Shawn.
Thanks..for the update
All good
Thank you for sharing your knowledge and the current state of things in Iceland. My mother’s family emigrated from Iceland in 1900 to Lundar, Manitoba, Canada. Your updates are therefore of interest to me. 🇨🇦
Thanks for all of your hard work man!
Thanks for the great answer.
Thanks for another great update. On a side note with all those people, no wonder it's a "blue" lagoon 😊
Another great day to learn ! Thanks Shawn
Yes loud and clear
Thanks!
Hi! (Greetings from Sweden)
Thanks
KK in salt Lake always watching since my daughter's went to Iceland few months ago
Welcome back! Great information on the two eruptions. You could name the dinosaur Rhododendrons.
Also eagerly watching from Portland, Oregon
Just adding that I'm interested in a meet up in Amsterdam IF it fits into your holiday schedule. I only live about 25 minutes away by train. Hope you and your wife enjoy the birthday river cruise. My mum and stepdad did something similar last year and really enjoyed it.
The ongoing eruption has gone through the spatter cone created in the last recent eruption, and it looks like it’s remained open there
Please do not go away again. We in Denver discovered you when we gathered here for the holidays. We all became just nascent geologists with a burgeoning technical vocabulary and developing an ability to sort of understand English with an Icelandic accent. It was must see tv with morning coffee.
Suddenly, one morning, there was lava, loads of lava, and fire and fury ... and no Shawn. No Shawn with all the Metro Office charts and graphs and graphics and easy to follow explanations... i was lost, deserted, despondent and totally in the dark about what was happening.
But today, there was Shawn ... all is well with the world again!! 🌎
Seriously, I have learned so much from you. You are a good teacher ... I didn't fall asleep once! You've brought me to a section of science I had admired but never really understod, and I'm loving it!! Sorry your time in Iceland wasn't more exciting, but it did seem highly unstable.
Will be making a contribution. THANKS FOR EVERYTHING !!
Veronica in Denver
Loved this. Thanks.
That dinosaur was adorable! @ Mandie Jo
Your expectations may be low, but the information is great! DELAWARE, USA,TIME 1923

Hello from Ottawa Ontario
I would love to see a video about Heimaey and the Eldfell eruption!
Enjoy your rover cruise. I heard parts of the rhine are closed for shipping due to high water. The Eiffel area used to be a supervolcano so maybe you can still get a bit of a geology excursion.
Kilauea has fizzled out for now. I live on the big island. When lava flowed in this same rift in 1974, it lasted 6 hours. Watched the lava flow earlier today. It's all smoke now.
Hi from western australia
Love the idea of the geology 101 courses with a quiz!
Good afternoon from Willcox,AZ
Mt. Kanlaon in the Philippines also erupting rn
Re the supervolcano question, everything has to be "super", these days. Have you noticed how we keep hearing about "supermoons"? That's because there are three or four "supermoons" every year. They're a total non-event: they're not unusual, and they're not even noticeable unless somebody tells you about it.
Watching from Utah
@shawnwillsey Asked before you said you would check out "why does Iceland GPS have error bars but Hawaii does not? I know you have been super busy so no worries.
Great session! Sorry to say I’m going to miss your Iceland talk in Boise, but I’ll keep my ears piqued for an Idaho field trip sometime.
I’m not sure of the 🦕 name, but it’s clearly a rare specimen of a Pinkanimitesaurus!
Crochetasaurus, or Mandysaurus
Good ones.
Icelandic Explorer CZcams channel just posted his drone flight video from today. Worth a view!
Ground Water. Previous eruptions also happened in winter! If groundwater is flowing now that's a easy explanation.
Looking forward to the new Iceland videos!
So much volcanic activity around the world at the moment.
can you speak on the Italian campi volcano that they are so worried about? Naples looks to be in a lot of trouble what is your opinion?
Greetings from Centralia Wa.
Yes looks and sounds good.. Arkansas
Father’s Day if you want to and Lakeland Florida we’re receiving you loud clear.
Flight that you were able to control the drone from the US fabulous view of the volcano eruption.

Yes sir
Can see and hear you

Eifel national park is not too far from the rhine (from Bonn another beautiful town)
hi from Melbourne. Can see and hear you
Hi there... When u zoom out a bit on Google earth whole Iceland looks like one big Crater... I would call it Megavulkan with this big crack too from north- to southpole😳
yes
Sindy - Glacier Bay Alaska
hi from NYC I hear you
Regularly share your comments, drone views, Etc. With my three adult children and six grandchildren
Bedankt
Thank you
Hejj could you post a time for the live stream in the community link? I always miss where the time is announced🙈
Lisa from Houston
Yes can see you
Yup
We can rule out any possibility of effects from solar storms that cause energetic particles to hit the very top of Earth’s atmosphere to reach the many kilometers deep rocks and magma that cause volcanic eruptions. I am a geophysicist.
Hi Shawn can hear well in the uk
Wanda from Anaheim. CA
;cooling and sounding good in Utah
I haven't looked at the comments yet, but I am wondering about the deflation at 47 mins, could it be a result of the extra weight of the various eruptions?
Unlikely.
@@shawnwillsey Thanks for the response. I guess we wait and see where the trend will head now.
Professor Wilsey, have defensive berms been used on Kilauea? Would it have been possible to use in 2018 eruption on the eastern rift zone?
If you fly into the Netherlands know that we have a big part that is below sealevel. Schiphol our main airport is 4 meters below sealevel and is a lake made into land ( polder in dutch). What might be intresting to see the boat is Rhenen and Wageningen. In the ice-age there was a big glacier over the netherlands and we have overthere the end of the glacier ending in the rijn ( rhine) and at the sites it has elevation moraine (stuwwal) says google translate. Behind that between wageningen and Arnhem we have a big beautiful national park called the hoge veluwe.
The boat trip that you are going to make is a verry nice one. I work as a nurce and I know some client that take the red cros boat up the rhine and they tell me it is a great holiday.
Sorry I missed your live stream. 😢❓The lava in Iceland looks a little foamy. Is that normal?
Hi from Immingham East cost UK
Do you know any updates/ info on Yellowstone?
Hi Shawn, thanks again. As a newcomer to much of this info can I ask.... are fissure eruptions common? I associate volcanoes with big explosions from the top. Cheers Sue, Adelaide Australia
Ur good

Hey Shawn, what are the chances of a flank collapse with that new crack in the flank?
why have you not mentioned any updates on campi flegrei?
I haven’t had time to monitor it.
@@shawnwillsey sorry i should have worded that better, more like any interest in the campi flegrei situation
👍🏼
