World's Coldest BBQ Festival | Hokkaido ★ ONLY in JAPAN

- Japan's Extreme North in Hokkaido is home to some super frigid towns like Kitami, Rikubetsu, and Abashiri. In the middle of winter, at night, one town has a massive meat festival -- and it's outdoors in below zero temperatures. It's the world's coldest BBQ festival with over 2,000 people attending together to grill Kitami's famous pork short rib cuts called Karubi and other meat like wagyu, horumon and sausages.
I drove north from Sapporo to experience it and eat as much local barbecue as my stomach could hold.
On the way, I stopped in Rikubetsu and spent a night at the town's roadhouse where temperatures dropped to -27C / -16.6F at 11pm. The coldest record night here is -38.4 Celsius or -37.1 Fahrenheit on February 7, 2019.
Note: The coldest temperature recorded in Japan was -41 degrees Celsius (-42 degrees Fahrenheit) in Asahikawa in January 1902.
The Kitami Extreme Cold Yakiniku Festival 北見厳寒の焼き肉まつり is held annually in February, tickets are 2000 yen but sell out fast. Book in advance online.

Thanks for watching this adventure I filmed in February 2020 on a Hokkaido driving adventure. Travel around Japan for me continues in October so expect more adventure! What did you think - would you eat Horumon in -20C weather? Don't forget to subscribe to this new ONLY in JAPAN channel if you haven;t already and see you again soon! Mata ne~ John
Two Winter's ago, we hit -53*C with the windchill. I got frostnip on the tip of my nose, as I was out helping my friend shovel snow for an Elementary School. Frostnip is just before frostbite, and boy was it ever cold! I've only ever experienced that same temperature once before, further north, delivering News Papers... brutal. I'm from Alberta, Canada.
Why didn't you post this before.
I have grilled sausages over a campfire in -20C to -25C many times. This festival looks very tempting to visit for me at least. Here in northern parts of Sweden where I'm from the winter is 6 months long and it can get to around -40C or colder in some places each winter. The coldest day in my lifetime was -42C in my city when I was a few years old, so I don't really remember so much of it. Even if it hit cold than -30C here, we still have to go to school and work. A few winters ago at my old job I had to shoveling snow around campfire all around the area I worked at in -32C. My beard was all white with thick frost after 1 hour of work.
@@mbe102 Canada - when I was there for a viewer meet up in Montreal and it was -30C the night before, it was the first time I'd experienced such cold. I asked my Canadian friends at the meet up "how do you live through this winter? Why not move?" They all shrugged. If you're born into it, it's just another cold day LOL
Canadians are pretty special.
I absolutely remember the other trip to the NO-Festival =) Didn't you also tease this "other trip" during the video? Idk. Saying' you were hyped up with energy is an understatement. ^-^ Thx for the video - I just love your trips! Archived or not, it takes away nothing from the event.
Our legend is back.
Yes! The best host!
So well produced! Can't imagine how long the post-production alone takes. Picking out music, voice over, color-grading, subtitling, editing so it's a cohesive story etc. There's so much work in those 12mins. Awesome job, John! 👍
Japan is so beautiful
literally an event meant to just hang out and make new friends and enjoy some amazing food. just another reason why japan is so damn amazing! amazing work john and im so happy to see you and the family healthy and happy!! :D
I came here fr the live just now just to say I really love everything John does and he basically changed my life (no joke) by getting me much more interested in Japanese culture as a whole
Thank you.
I've watched you for years John and love your edited content...thank you for this! 🌸
Nice editing! I appreciated the clever use of music and awesome drone shots. Also, I can't help but wonder how these people stay warm in their homes!
1:42 Haha dude I LOVE the “Tatooine / Hoth” vibes of the shot and music. You’re a master of your craft, Johnnyboy!! 😄🤘🏼🔥🔥👏🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻👏🏻🙌🏻👏🏻
A lovely piece of escapism. Reminds me when I used to live in Russia and in winter we’d grill meat and shashlik on grills in the snow. Something about it makes it taste better!
If only we can smell the meat grilling through our screens!
Brrrr.....🥶🥶🥶🥶🥶....Been waiting for a new content in this channel, it's awesome to see Hokkaido with -20degC!!!!...🥶🥶🥶🥶🥶

Well, there is the live stream right after this event in cold Kitami? czcams.com/video/qBW_rTd6CmY/video.html and in Rikubetsu - and the ice breaker ship 🚢 🧊
Love me some offal because it's a good source of nutrients and usually priced well but also because it respects the animal. Glad to see you posting another video, hope there are plenty more in your reel to share!

Great video John, you have an unique view ❤️
Can you rent the grilling gear there or you have to bring it?
And owwwwwñ people drinking their frozen beers and their ice creams 🥰
It's set up for the festival. If you have a ticket, you have a grill to share. Sit, volunteers with bring the hot charcoal! Pretty awesome.

Informative, interesting and funny. Keep the good work 👏 .
Wonderful episode, thanks John! My mom is from Nemuro in Hokkaido, so we're familiar with the northern climate. Looking forward to your 2021 adventures!
Woah! Kushiro and Nemuro are in my list for this winter 🥶 and next summer so you’ll get to see it here soon. Thanks Gil, great to hear from you!
Kushiro is great for its crane viewing .... And Akan Park is Japan's Yellowstone, with the world's highest (?) clear water volcanic lake. Nearby is the touristy and corny but still cool Ainu Mura, a "preserved" village.
Love the atmosphere there!
Lovely. Just lovely!
Yakiniku 🥩 party on a very cold winter ❄️ is ♥️‼️👍👏👏👏👏👏Thank you John 😄
