    Ski Instructors often use the term 'skiing stacked' when talking about body position in ski technique.
    In this advanced ski lesson Darren Turner, presenter of the Ski School series of Apps for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad explains what 'being stacked' means and tells you how it will improve your skiing - not only when carving but off piste, in powder and crud too. Learn to ski the right way.
    The Ski School series of Apps offer ski technique instruction using no-nonsense, easy-to-understand language in a format that you can take wherever you go.

      Awesome. Everyday is a school day and you can always pick up something different. Even looking back at some of the earlier levels you might find a little gem that changes the way you think about a movement in skiing. Top work Vic.

    Had a great ski instructor in canada a few years ago said the same as you with the arm position,he used to say like'leaning forward and hugging the bear!' so in the lesson he is shouting 'Hug the bear!' but to his credit he took my skiing to the next level.Exellent video thanks.... cheers james.

    Darren, you're videos are outstanding! Thank you for posting them. I'm a ski instructor in Minnesota where the hills are very small, and when I go out west to ski I'm suffering non-stop on days 4 and 5. Being "stacked" doesn't seem so important here, but I know it does matter on real ski hills and I've been working on getting better at that as well as teaching my students better technique. Thanks!

    This is one of my favorite videos. After watching this I corrected my over-rotation issue, and I feel much stronger and better balanced on the snow. Now no matter how the snow texture is, being stacked gets you out of the turn easy and with no trouble. Thank you. Nice jacket by the way.

With the aid of your apps I've made rapid progress - I was even moved up to the upper intermediate class on my first ski holiday! • @jimidee33
    @jimidee33 Před 12 lety +1

    Good exercise! I like the way the use of both hands are demonstrated. If the outside hand is following the outside ski and the inside hand is placed properly, then over rotation of the torso cannot occur thus twisting or rotaing the skis off their edges. I also like the "flow" aspect you mention, the smooth transition of the hand placement that is. Longer radius turns require smoother flowing movements just as short turns require smooth but quick movements. I will use this drill this winter!

    What a great tip for those that over rotate the upper body into the hill to (falsely) control speed but riding out a carved turn isn't a beginner or even intermediate skill so facing the fall line (with upper body rotation downhill) is more helpful to almost every skier.

  • @OurLucylocket
    @OurLucylocket Před 12 lety

    On my last day of my ski holiday I finally got this long turn legs together turn as I call it. But I did find it was only doable on runs that are not too steep otherwise you do go very fast like this .. for an Beginner turning intermediate, next time I hope to gain confidence skiing like this so I can go faster... !

  • @skng
    @skng  Před 11 lety +1

    Try to use the arc of the carve turn to slow down. Turn fully across and almost up the hill, if the terrain gets steeper you may have to apply a percentage of skid to your turn to help scrub some speed. This doesn't make you a bad skier.

    Love all the video's. My eight year old daughter watched the carving video last year before the season and brilliantly started the year off carving! It seems as if I've been skiing forever, and I've dragged bad technique along for the ride. These videos are helping me tweak my skiing and are offering me more confidence. I still only drop into the double blacks on occasion. The fear of moguls (the final frontier) has held me back. The dreaded chutes are filled with moguls. Maybe this year I can try the moguls again. Skiing with my daughter on the blueblacks and the blacks is probably more fun than the brief ego boost a chute will give me. Oh well. Thanks. Where are these videos filmed? Rockies?

      Hi Malcolm Scott Thats great to hear. Hopefully she's back on the snow and skiing again this year. We filmed the majority of our Ski School lessons in Serre Chevalier Vallée however this particular film was shot in Tignes, France. We'd love to get out to the Rockies some time. Any recommendations?

      Hoping to hit Mammoth Mountain in California soon. I usually like to have her watch a video (during the summer) of what we'll be working on the upcoming year. The carving video absolutely worked wonders. She can succesfully carve down groomed blacks and has control. Now this year it's getting the pole plants fine tuned a bit. We'll need to slow it down to the greens for that. Very excited about this year. Every day is a lesson. Some storms comin' in from ther Pacific!

    Interesting hand positions, I've never see that approach before. While it works for long radius turns I think the Schlopy Drill hand positions would promote a much stronger inside half and would also lead to developing better counter which would allow better medium and short radius turns (and better separation). Thanks for the unique perspective though!
