Get PERFECT BALL POSITION Every Time

- One of the most overlooked set up elements is ball position. This tip will show you how to get perfect ball position every time both at the range and even when you play.
Proper ball position with irons and woods is vital because it can cause poor golf shots. Keep in mind that club makes an arc as it swings. If you play the ball too far back or too far forward for the club you are hitting it will cause you to hit it too early or late on that arc. This can lead to pushed and pulled golf shots.
This isn't just a beginner problem either. I have seen countless better players with poor ball position. Make sure you watch this tip and remember this simple thing you can be doing to make sure your ball position is perfect for every shot you hit with all clubs into the future.

This is the method that I learned from my coach 35+ years ago! I'm so glad to finally see this method elsewhere because I was starting to 2nd guess myself after coming back to the game from a decade+ pause.
Glad you found me. Keep this stuff simple and memorable. This is what I usually send to those getting back into it after a break:
I have fixed countless people who took a break from golf get their swing back. It's easy because they have used their body in the past. Take the break and you start hitting with the arms (which will never work). I just need to get them to loosen the wrists and use their body again to power the swing.
Watch this first to understand why taking a break lost your swing:

Work on this first:

czcams.com/video/N-nGM6yN790/video.html

Get the ball hooking and loose the wrists. Once you can do that you then start firing the lower body harder/quicker/faster to straighten it out. Not sure what your downswing trigger is but something in your legs and hips you use to hit the ball.
This is the easiest trigger:
czcams.com/video/RdphthCQ9VM/video.html
As you do this there is timing between the release and the legs and hips so you need to watch this to learn exactly how hard you need to fire your hips:

This is literally days or a week or two of work maximum to get it back.
Keep me posted.
Paul - this ball position video has improved my ball striking - thank you - how far should you stand from the ball? I know it’s dependent on club you are using and when I follow what you suggest in this video I feel like I am on top of the ball - even with the longer clubs.
You do have a section on this in your Body Swing program , which I purchased but I found it a little confusing where you line up with the red flag in the distance with different clubs to determine how far to stand from the ball. Thanks again for your help
Thank you. That’s is a great method to ensure correct ball position. I will definitely incorporate that set up at address. I think I often have the ball too far back with my irons.
Glad it was helpful! Just an easy way to remember it.
This is great information! Thank you.
Glad you liked it. Thanks.
Exactly what I’ve been looking for…

Don't work on too much at once.
Good routine Paul,, thank you for the advise.
Glad you liked it. Thanks.
Thank you Paul
You're welcome.
Nice tip - will consciously try it out!
Glad you liked it. Yes, give it a try. Easy way to do it perfectly every time.
Well done Paul
Glad you liked it. Thanks.
POWERFUL LESSON!!!!!!!!!!
Glad you liked it. Thanks. People need to do things and learn things that can be repeated 100% of the time. Too many people just stand up and hit it. Doesn't seem to consistent to me.
Hi Paul
Not exactly sure where to post this question for you. As golf is winding down up here in Canada, what would you suggest for the off season:
A. Re watching the Body Swing fundamentals from start to finish;
B. Just do many of the drills that I have saved from you ; or
C. What should a Canadian senior golfer do.
Thanks as always, its been a hell of a year thanks to you and the Body Swing. Cheers Leon 🇨🇦🇨🇦
I grew up in Canada so I know all about winter. For me I would get playing great golf then take the winter off. Come spring it would take me until July get it back. I didn't want my students doing that so I tell them you need to give me at least 25 practice swings (working on the positions in The Body Swing) 3 times a week (more if you can). If so you will remember the positions and start the season where you ended it. Then you can keep making it better and better. The winter is the best time to practice. No ball means you are not trying to hit the ball. If so, you can work on precise positioning and have them mastered in no time. So go through each position. There are only 4 plus the grip and set up. Master each one. If you do you will look like a pro when you start back.
@@paulwilsongolf - Thanks so much for your kind reply. Paul Wilson and The Body Swing are the best things I have found for my golf game in the last 60 years. Have a great winter (as far as us Canadians know it). All the best to the entire team.

Thanks so much. Keep up the good work.
Paul this makes my 7 iron feel way too far forward in my stance. I have been just putting everything a little forward of center for every club but just increasing the width of stance as the club gets longer with Driver maybe a little more forward. It keeps it simple because I don't have to count how many balls I have to put back in my stance etc
This is the guideline I teach. You can vary a little but not too much. If so you are putting band aids on your swing.
Hey Paul ,any videos or tips on how far to stand from the ball at address. Should I just let the arms hang straight down and then address the ball??
Well, I like people to measure the butt to the belt buckle at 6-7".It's important that you have the toe of the club just slightly higher than the heel as you do this as this toe/heel position shortens or lengths the club. Toe slightly higher than the heel then measure butt to belt buckle.
Love your content. Ive been struggling with hitting a full pitching wedge in the middle of my stance. Half the time I blade it straight right. My other full shots are much more consistent. Sounds like I need to move it up a little..
Yeah, middle is too far back. Hitting it too early in the arc.
@@paulwilsongolf Thank you and make sense unless its a pretty short pitch shot with feet closer together, but that wouldn’t be a full swing. I will follow your advice. Ive been working to follow along on many of your other lessons. You’re a generous guy for replying.
Short pitch if you are trying to get it up you are still playing it slightly forward of center even with a narrower stance.
@@paulwilsongolf Makes sense and I’m taking this advice to heart. Most of my bad shots are short ones and I feel like I’m being blocked with not enough time to release naturally with the ball too far back sometimes.
Yeah, I would only be playing it back for a knock down/punch shot.
Crazy-good tip. For me this solved 2 issues I have had all my golf life.. 1) lining up (in)correctly to the target. Visual Spatial Illusion is real. I line up right (right-handed golfer) of my target more often than not. This is not unusual at all for golfers. My club face is (sort of) lined up to my target line, but my feet/hips/shoulders are pointed right of my target. This tip helped me focus on my alignment. I'm MUCH more square to target. 2) I now have a much more consistent ball position routine for every shot which adds confident in my swing. My swig commitment has never been higher. THANK YOU Paul!
Glad you liked it. Thanks. It all starts with the grip and setup so if this is helping you get that right you are at least in position to make some great swings. Keep going through the steps every time ... forever. We don't want it breaking down into the future. In no time it will just become a habit.
For this tip Paul, maybe you can create like a; Have you seen the graves golf allignment and ball position trainer? Something like that but your style...A "The Paul Wilson Ball position trainer". For all irons, hybrids, and woods. it could work tho...
I haven't seen it but why would that be necessary. Just do this and it will be perfect. Save money.
Mr Paul Wilson, how do you determin the distance from your feet to the ball? I tried stretching all my arm like in a single line and thats distance im using, but i prefer to be sure about it. Thanks
To get the distance to the ball you start with the toe of the club slightly higher than the heel. Then measure the butt of the grip to the belt buckle at about 6-7". There should be a slight angle between the arms and club.
@@paulwilsongolf Thank you. What i was... im doing is, i put the end toe of club in the middle of ball, while stretching my arm in single plane... then do the perfect ball position of lets say, one ball left foot and middle stance... then stretch again from behind the ball while now aiming the end toe to the end of the ball... then i low my arms. so now that toe is in the beggining of ball and do my swing and its working tho... but still not sure if it should be like it. Thank Paul, this week with your system and im loving it... Feels so smooth and great.
Not really following you on the process. Seems like a lot of stretching and aiming to get into position. If it works keep doing it. I line the ball a little on the toe but not too much. The more you line it on the toe the more your head will move forward as you go into the backswing.
Paul - what about fairway woods like 3-5 woods , and 3-6 irons/ hybrids? Where would you play those clubs in your stance?
two ball lengths left of center
I like driver off the instep. 3 wood down to 7 iron at 1 ball inside the left left. 8 iron and down 2 balls off the instep. Give this a try and if you need a little different that may work for you but don't go crazy and get way off this guideline. If so, you are putting band aids on your swing.
Nope - 1 ball. Watch:
czcams.com/video/o55Cl-byCq8/video.html
thanks Paul - video link forwarded above even more helpful than the one you most recently posted - “easy , peasy , lemon squeezy “ just like caddy Eddie Lowery once told Francis Ouimet on his way to winning the US Open in 1913
Is the rope drill good for the body swing?
Not sure what rope drill you are referring too? I do not and have not ever taught the rope drill. Not to say it isn't good. Show me an example so I can determine if it is or isn't.
Do you do a forward shaft lean on irons?
All about forward shaft lean. Watch: czcams.com/video/RM4OX3m2-90/video.html
I have moved the ball back in my stance to hit straighter and to help hit ball before the ground. you said that it is wrong to do that, but in my rotation, I kept hittin' too far behind the ball. I made good contact, but the ball wasn't being compressed good, and it would fly left a lot. I just can't seem to hit the ball first, then take a good divot, while the ball is more forward in my stance. please help
Here is the fix:
czcams.com/video/UwynwFBldv4/video.html
czcams.com/video/hAZyQXoIGac/video.html
Give that a try and you should make perfect contact.
@@paulwilsongolf thank you. I will try and ingrain that thought in my setup. "Feel the heel"
I played nine holes today while utilizin' the "feel the heel" method. It is a lil' tricky timin' the the lift and turn of my right leg into the swing, but I was able to feel the extra strength in my swing as a result. On nine holes, I hit 5 of 6 fairways and averged 285 yards. My iron strikes were purrer and straighter. I was really able to feel the strength in my rotation today and just want to thank you for bein' there to answer the questions I ask, when m ready to hear it.
That's great you were getting it and great distance. Get the body moving and good stuff happens.
What's the stance for a 5 iron and a fairway work please
Here you go: czcams.com/video/o55Cl-byCq8/video.html
@@paulwilsongolf thankyou for the confirmation. I did find it from following the link in the video.
How far should we stand from the ball?
You want to be about 6-7" from the butt of the club to your belt buckle.
That's all fine for the range ,but how do you line up the shot on the golf course. How do you determine the distance of your stance in relation to the ball.
I have tried the heels together when addressing the ball, but by the time I get the ball in the correct position and the correct spine angle and the right distance to the ball, everything is messed up.
Show a down the line shot without that alignment stick of you addressing the ball and setting it all up to the target.
I think that would be a better visual.
Just my thoughts on the matter.
Well if you keep doing it at the range why would you do anything different on the course once you get used to it? Down the line was unnecessary as this was just about ball position and a little on width of stance. To get the distance to the ball you want the toe slightly higher than the heel. Then measure 6-7" inches from the butt of the club to your belt buckle then build around the club. The key is getting the toe slightly higher than the heel. I will do a tip on body position at some point in the future.
@@paulwilsongolf Great heel together tip on ball position! Interested to see how toe slightly higher than the heel relates to your future tip on body position as I don’t visualize what you mean by that. Thanks!
Glad you liked it. Looking at your club you have the toe and the heel. Take the grip of your club. Lower it. When you do the toe will come off the ground. Then raise it and the opposite happens. Ideally you want the toe slightly higher than the heel. This sets the correct angle between the club and the arms from the down the line view. If the toe is too much up you may hit pulls and pull hooks. If the toe is down to much you may hit pushes/push slices. The toe/heel position can also affect distance to the ball. I like the butt of the club to be about 6-7" from your belt buckle. If you lift the grip up too much you may stand too tall and get too close. The opposite happens if you lower the club too much. I will do more set up tip in the future.
@@paulwilsongolf Thanks for the additional details on the hands/heel/toe relationship at setup and how that impacts shot shape. I have tried all sorts of variations, even hands further out (single plain swing) like Moe Norman. But the best ball pure strike for me always works best with the more conventional setup. Definitely looking forward to your more detailed video, thanks!!
Paul, you GOTTA do a video on controlling pitch distances inside 100 yards. I'm so sick of blading my 40 yard pitches across the green! Help!
Pitching is simple. Set the backswing by hinging your wrists for the shot you are trying to hit. Once set, turn your belt buckle as I show in this tip to hit the shot. HINGE/TURN
czcams.com/video/BZD0_jPL8ks/video.html
Great idea but think I’ll need a note book
I take notes and I've been playing for over 40 years.
Somehow I found there is a little bit too much variability in this method. I watched the video from another CZcams teacher and what he said is easier to do/adjust. His point is that find the mid point of you stance. This will be the lowest point of your swing. Then decide whether to put your ball before or after that point. For irons, we want to hit the ball before the lowest point. Then we can adjust the distance from the ball the mid point. I doubt there is a universal rule for the distance, for example two balls away.
Really, my students get this in 2 minutes. It's simple. Sounds like you would be playing the ball too far back in your stance. Mid point then move it back for irons? The lowest point of you swing is not the center of your stance. You hit the ball then the club is still descending taking a divot (if you have the right fundamentals) so dropping it back for irons is not going to work. Too early in the arc so your going to hit pushes. Do what you feel it is best.
For quite some time I have been toying with the idea of having embroidered on my golf bag, “ hit the ball and trust God” But if I do this I’m going to add the words, “ and thank you Paul Wilson”
You would then for sure be my number 1 fan.
@@paulwilsongolf hahaha that suits me fine. But we are all fans Paul
this is what I struggle with is getting the ball in the same spot (or dang close) every time.
Glad you found this. The click reminds you to do it.
👏👍👏👍
I think it's also important to note that 'perfect ball position' doesn't really exist. There's a stock position for every golfer, essentially as you've described it, but that position can move depending on intentions for the shot or how a player swings the club.
Well, this is the perfect ball position for what I teach.
Fade or draw…stance same?!
Yes, you can do that for all shots.
"There's no place like home ...."
For sure.
The only time your hands are behind the ball is with the driver
Who is saying they are behind the ball with other clubs?
@@paulwilsongolf I have seen a lot of players put their hands ahead on the driver an some of the PGA pros in this area have done it
Depends on the driver. Some have them behind. Some even. I wouldn't be putting them ahead.
@@paulwilsongolf I have always tried to be where it’s comfortable for me to where the club would ark out. I have always been able to figure out where it should be correct after hitting a lot of balls. I enjoy your teaching you make it simple
I never understand why everyone relates to their feet. Why not to your head? My ballposition is under my nose, underneath my right eye left eye left ear etc. Much better.
Because your ball is right there at your feet. If you liked doing it that way then keep doing it.
@@paulwilsongolf yes, but when you’re downhil uphill or sidewards out of the normal stance, my method is better. Suppose you’re very small and you have a wider stance because of that, you’re method doesn’r work, mine does. For me you’re method is not logic.
This tip is not talking about downhill and sidehill lies. Of course you change your ball position for those shots.
