Yeah I'm high functioning with aspergers. Not many things stressed me out when I was growing up, but even having eye contact with friends was a struggle. The worst thing is that eye contact is the best way to show that you're engaged. Me and my parents thought I was just shy and they pushed me, it sucked for a decade but Im happy they did since I've been able to function far better than I was as a kid. Though if I have to think or convey something deep I still don't focus on people's eyes to maintain my thought process (usually look in between eyebrows to make it seem like Im still making eye contact). If someone interrupts me I almost always do a double take as I not only have to add the rebuttal to my thought process, I have to readjust my eyes just for a second. People staring took me awhile to get used to as a guy who was already 6'0 and growing in middle school, basically felt like I was being glared at by wild animals. I just slowly got used to it by being a wallflower, people would stare at me still but far less often so and I basically utilized exposure therapy and slowly became more social to be stared at more often till I got to the point where I don't mind being stared at and can meet a gaze just fine.
