- Buna ziua!
After visiting Chișinău, I had no ideas about what train would bring me back to Romania, and when I saw this train pulling up in the station, I thought this train was modern and was built recently... but no! It was designed back in the days.... come along with me on this Moldovan adventure onboard the D1M!
Enjoy, and don't forget to like/leave a comment to help the channel :-)

Hey, ho! Let's go! Folklore and rock-n-roll! Pleacă trenul, unde ești? CHIȘINĂU-BUCUREȘTI.....or I guess Iași in your case 😂. Iași is considered the cultural capital of Romania! Historically, Iași was once part of Moldavia, as it was the capital of the Principality of Moldavia from 1564 to 1859, and after that it was capital of the United Principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia from 1859 to 1862, and briefly the capital of Romania from 1916 to 1918. As you mentioned, the D1s were originally built in Hungary, by Ganz-MAVAG or Ganz Works. They were pioneers in their craft, not just in building rolling stock but revolutionized the milling industry! Ganz Works is known for helping create the world's first electrified main line in Italy! They commissioned Kálmán Kandó to develop induction motors and synchronous motors. In 1894, Kandó developed high-voltage three-phase AC motors and generators for electric locomotives.
The first-ever electric rail vehicle manufactured by Ganz Works was a 6 HP pit locomotive with direct current traction system. They won the tender for electrification of the Valtellina Railway in Italy in 1897. Under the plans from Kálmán Kandó, three phase electric power at 3 kV and 15 Hz was fed through two upper wires and the rails. The electricity was produced in a dedicated power station and the system operated for thirty years from 1902. Italian railways were the first in the world to introduce electric traction for the entire length of a main line rather than just a short stretch, and the 106 km Valtellina line was opened in September 1902.
Moldova facts: Like the Romanian coat of arms, the Moldovan arms, adopted in 1990, features a dark golden eagle holding an Orthodox Christian cross in its beak. Instead of a sword, the eagle is holding an olive branch, symbolizing peace. The shield on the eagle's chest has a star, rose, crescent, and an Aurochs' head. The aurochs is an extinct species that's considered to be the wild ancestor of modern domestic cattle, and the star, rose, crescent and Aurochs's head comes from the flag and coat of arms of Moldavia. With its 300 days of sunshine per year, Moldova's climate is greatly suited to winemaking! Fossils of Vitis teutonica vines, found in the northern part of Moldova, date back between 6 to 25 million years ago, and grape seed imprints from 2,800 BC prove they were cultivated. Most of Moldova's commercial wine production is for export, 67 million bottles of wine are exported annually! Milestii Mici, the largest underground wine cellar in the world, is located in Moldova just 18 km from Chisinau. It stretches for 250 km, of which only 120 km are currently in use.
During the 1917 Russian Revolution, Bessarabia briefly became an autonomous state within the Russian Republic. In February 1918, it declared independence and then integrated into Romania later that year following a vote of its assembly. The decision was disputed by Soviet Russia, which in 1924 established, within the Ukrainian SSR, a so-called Moldavian autonomous republic on partially Moldovan-inhabited territories to the east of Bessarabia (this land is know Transnistria). In 1940, as a consequence of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact, Romania was compelled to cede Bessarabia and Northern Bukovina to the Soviet Union, leading to the creation of the Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic, and Moldova declared independence in August 1991
126 Km in five hours? WOW
That's the fast train, I'm sure they have slower ones
That's the reality over there. I did not like Moldova at all.
mostly because of the border and 2 checks on each side
It is because of the bogie change at the border town of Ungheni. That's a big event!
@@TNT4dbrain no change on that lane to Iași
Sir as an American I am so proud of you finding your voice. Too many overseas CZcams channels try to "Americanize" their content.. You went from closed captioned to narrating in your native voice. Keep doing you. Your content is amazing
Nice TEE colors on that old but beautiful train! And unbelievable job on refurbishing it into this one 😮
Fantastic great Video 👍Thumbs Up
that's a very surprising train, welcome again to RO, hope you enjoy it!
When I saw the thumbnail of your video, I was thinking that those trains would be very nice to have for a potential line near where I live. But I was awestruck when I found out that they were from the 60's but they were refurbished down to the last bolt. Makes you think about the wonders one could pull off our venerable Fiat Materfer 7131 DMUs here in Argentina
You used to have almost identical trains called Rosario. The D1 is based on them.
@@benbedothu Yes, they were built in the same factory as the D1s. However, the model name was C4 and they were named according to the cities they would serve and were specifically tailored according to city. "Catamarca" ones were made for metric gauge and had tourist and first class accommodations. But "Bariloche" ones were luxuriously appointed, so the cheapest class available was first class and they featured sleeping compartments, they were also made to use Indian gauge. Rosario ones never made it to Argentina as they were sent to the USSR in concept of war reparations, but they were made for medium distance services and thus, they had tourist class only. Ganz kept building DMUs for Argentina well into the 60s
The Ukrainian train you met on the way is quite different inside from the Moldovan one. I hope you get a chance to check it out soon.
Yes, I would like to see a video on the Ukrainian railways.
Interesting video. Greetings from Poland.
So now you should review the classic one! :D
You should visit Lisbon. They have trains originally built in the 1920s in the Cascais suburban service.
Nice to see they sell beer...it would make the five hour journey at least a bit bearable.....great video as always
D1 was notable for doors without windows.
I am a great fan of the orignal D1 trains. In fact, when I first saw videos about them a few years ago, I could not believe how stylish they were! I'm a bit disappointed they are being modernised. They really have been transformed.
Thank you for such an insightful video about that train!
I took that route for a few time but never realised about such an interesting story of that cars and seats
Greetings from Chisinau
Once again, thank you for your content, you doing a really wonderful shots
I've just came back from Moldova, and I was surprised... they haul this D1M with an ChME3 from Chisinau to Ungheni, there the loco is being uncoupled and the D1M powerd on.. and driving on its last legs till Iasi. The reason i've heard is because of failure in the units, only 1 runs (barely) therefor hault with a loco for the most of his journey. I hope te'll fix the D1M's soon, great sets and perfect for the job in Moldova.
I had the same happening on an original D1 in Ukraine, one of the engines failed and it hadn't the power to get even moving on the steep gradients of the Carpathian mountains. A ChME3 came to the rescue.
I've taken that route once in each direction, and train travel in Moldova is ... interesting in many ways.
The second class seating are the same of the italian TAF or TSR trains. No, they are not comfortable at all.
Luckily here in Italy they've mostly disappeared or have been improved: they used to be terrible when fitted with the original asymmetrical headrest, which is similar but not identical to the one shown in this video. It seemed like it was designed to be annoying on purpose, I wonder who ever thought it was a good idea.
Why you did not travelled with D1M!!! Those are the most interesting ones and one day its not possible to travel with them anymore!
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
In Poland, there's another heavily modernised train, the 14WE, which is a heavily modernised train, which was commonly nicknamed "Papal Train" due to it's route running between Kraków and Wadowice, the cities where John Paul II lived. And a fun fact is that these trains are, in fact, it isn't modernised, but rebuilt from scrapped EN57 trainsets, reusing bogies, equipments and some installations from them. Today, these trains are operated by SKM Warszawa, Koleje Śląskie and PolRegio, in a form of nine sets, four of which are now leased by Industrial Division. These trains have been successful since then, with their innovation results of them being 19WE, also produced for SKM, and Newag Impuls, which're in production since 2012.
As an Pole, I kinda find it funny. An train that was built in 2000s was basically reusing some components from EN57s and EN71s that were cut up.
Thanks!
4:21 A TGV wil do that in 30 min. I think 😊
It takes 2.5 hours from Marseilles to Paris, and for Air France flight it takes 2 hours usually ( with constant delays)
Great to see your Boulder baseball cap.... as well as the Durango Silverton poster! Go Colorado!
Nice video. First class looks great considering the age of the train. Thanks Thibault💚👍
Not only moldova, Poland also do the same thing with trains
The EN57 was orginalny made between 1961 and 1993 and since the 2006 from the EN57SPOT to newest EN57AKM
Silverton & Durango clock in Moldova? WoW!
Great video !!
Hey there, as you have often been trainriding in the balkans, i would like to ask you which route you personally find more beautifull/interesting? Im going to go on a interrail trip from my home bavaria to greece and there would be two routes:
1. Salzburg -> Trieste->Belgrade->Sofia->Istanbul
2. Salzburg->Budapest->Bucharest->Sofia->Istanbul
Thank you😊
definitely through Romania and the Carpathians, then from Bucharest to Sofia is probably even nicer, there are lovely mountain views in Bulgaria on that track.
@@danbUzZ1-where the views(and just the views) are remarkable to be seen, I cannot stress more on how important it is to 1. Forget about a train ride in Bulgaria 2. Take the first class night lines there, and ask in advance if the sleeper cars are from the newer types. Everything else is a complete madness...
Looks better than Amtrak 😂.
A great trip. I traveled this route - Chisinua- Iasi in 2018
Great trip report
In Chile, EFE also rebuilt some old trains for its flagship service. Some 70's-era UT440 EMU's brought from Renfe were completely rebuilt for "Terrasur" Intercity service - these were the fastest trains of South America (160 km/h) until the arrival of new CRRC EMU's in 2023.
Ah crap, the « CRRC war » is dominating
Nice video. Btw can you make an video about soon to be gone EN57/EN71 EMUs that still operate regional and commuter trains in Poland? If you do so, you should review the unmodernized ones.
These trains were originally produced by Hungarian factory Ganz-Mávag
Nice train. It's a shame the Chisinau - Bucuresti route is one of the few railway routes still operational in Moldova altogether... I hope Moldova can soon rise again from its present-day practically-third-world condition.
07:12 Is that a Cluj - Oradea train trip I see by any chance? 😏
Yes, you don't have to look too closely to see it's a DR1 with a nose job. Has it been re-engined?
10:00 this seat are the same that whe have onboard the PR (Piano ribassato) and TAF. But whe use this train for a short service.
The UZ cars are actually substantially more modern than the Moldovan ones - all of them are either modernized on newly built in the past 15 years. The white-gold-blue ones and the dark blue ones are air-conditioned, and I think some of the older light blue ones as well!
I was here before I started making video's, the station of Chisinau is indeed the most interesting station I ever saw.
Simply 🛤️waay 😃
Постсовковой экзотики захотелось?
For modernising, they have selected a very nice & modern design. Impressive and couldn’t believe that the train was a rebuilt from an old DMU.. Thank you for sharing it..😊
Thanks for video)
Great trip. What a great refurbishment.
Here's a new idea: Book a route from Timișoara Nord to Resita Nord
The trains and toilets will be completely c**p, but it'll be scenic!
Show something from Bulgaria 😊
Не го мъчи човека, а и ние да не се излагаме, с тия ковчези на релси, дето са резултат от умишленото съсипване на БДЖ
do chiltern class 68
will you ever review any of trenord's trains in Lombardy?
I see throughtless people leave luggage in the aisles all over the world.
After seeing second class I was expecting wild chickens roaming third class.
Ahahah :-) nice one!
That many aquariums in a train station sounds a little fishy to me.
Aquariums are used to create a calming, relaxing and soothing environment
There are 2 of them at my dentist's office for the same purpose. 🐟🐠🐡
Can you drive Slovenia’s Night train from Maribor to Koper please 😊
Moldova needs to merge with Romania. Solve a lot of problems for their people.
Nazi detected.
держись от молдовы подальше, чтобы у тебя проблемы не возникли
The biggest obstacle with that is Transnistria
@@FalconsEye58094 Just let it go. Its the smallest of regions, its not any problem. Not worth starting a war over, costing tens of thousands of lives…… Bonus for them, they have no gas or oil, so Amerika has no interest in starting a proxy war there.
@@user-ed7eq4ef5d Very typical to dictate Moldovas path in russian
I guess D1 stands for Diesel 1 und D1M for Diesel 1 Moldova
Diesel 1 Modernized
I'll probably have a chance to ride this in like 2 weeks, would you recommend?
Great video! I think the seats of 2nd class are the same as those in the Italian loco hauled regional trains
Yep, they are the seat of the refurbished "piano ribassato" coaches (built in the 70s and refurbished in the 2000s) and un refurbished TAF EMUs
👍🇧🇷👍
nice train, could use some improvement but still good. greetings from russia!
What "russia" are you from, mykola?
@@runoflife87 i live near moscow
Sounds like they really need to install continuous welded rail on that line!
Merci d’avance !
C'est prévu :-)
Chisinau's station looks like something Wes Andersen created :O
Its a good train and a good start for rominia
In Russia there were similar EMUs that were completely rebuilt with a modern design based on old ER2 units. it’s name is EM4 and they were only used in Moscow suburban routes
They were decommissioned in 2020 but you can still look it up on YT. a great redesign as well
I give them points for reusing those carriages. An interesting journey.
A very interesting vid like a lot of post Russian countries the railway infrastructure needs modernisation for an international train the time of travel is so out of sync with other emerging countries
Do people in Moldova speak english?
Like as a second or third language?
Most young people do
Young people, yes.
Old people, not really, most of them don't even speak romanian, which is the official language of Moldova.
From what I can remember, when I was there 3 years ago, most older people speak romanian and russian and there were some cases of someone speaking only romanian, meaning I couldn't comunicate with them.
When it comes to younger people, I'd say half, if not most of them, speak english thanks to the internet.
Funnily enough, the 2nd class seats can also be found on an european train, namely in Italy on taf EMU and PR and 2 floors casaralta coaches. Those coaches are getting scrapped (and for a good reason) and TAF are getting revamped, so those seats are mercifully gonna be gone soon. I honestly can't think of a train seat that is less confy than that, I would rather take 3rd class on this train than those aweful 2 class seats
The solution here might be modernizing the Route to ÖBB Bahnstrecke Wien Hbf Wiener Neustadt section or Westbahn Sankt Pölten Wien Hbf conventional speed section not the high-speed line. That way the travel time between the two cities is reduced thanks to the 160 kmh 100 mph Max speed. The final section of the route would have belonged to the Austrian Railway successor KkStb since it went to Bukowina an Austrian crownland 100 years ago
Thanks! Was very interesting to see the railroad situation in this area. Moldova is a very poor country, but it tryes to save the railroad commuter connections at least a little.
I remember, how I was dreaming to visit Chisinau once and now it's only the foggy plance due to the war and international isolation(
And about the cars in the long distance trains. They have only similar external design and interior, technically they are very different. In Ukrainian train use the new cars of Krukov's car manufactury. In Moldovian train to Bucharest use the old soviet cars, which were manufactured in DDR more then 30 years ago.
Russian Spy??😆

Just delete this, bro, this is painful
5 hours for barely 80 miles. Need more slow cheap trains.
And then they seemingly will end up in sovereign default
Слава Приднестровье ❤️💚❤️

The spelling isn’t correct, it’s right to say Kyiv, not Kiev. There was a campaign to change to the right name of the capital of Ukraine in all airports around the world. Maybe forget about railway stations. But please use the right spelling Kyiv(from Ukrainian- Київ).
Me I still spell it as Kiev because it is easier to remember than Kyiv😊
Not Kiev!! Correct KYIV!!!
Kiev is also correct.
Those trains are complete mess - very expensive to refurbish yet unreliable.
Please write Kyiv. Kyiv is the capital of Ukraine, while „kiev“ is russian name version, imposed by russia
Kyiv not Kiev, please 🙏 write the capital of Ukraine🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦 correctly ❤
Where is the premium quality train? It is just a destroyed primitive old technology. Oh wait, is it romanian? I understand everything
Какая разруха везде. А где премиальный поезд, не понял? А почему ползет, как черепаха поезд?
Boa tarde boa viagem lindo trem excelente video
The second class remembers me the interior of an italian Train the” taf (treno alta frequentazione) “ or the revamped carriages from the 70s “vicinale piano ribassato “.
