Rowan's (and his father's) Treehouse, phase 1.

- First time "editing" in OpenShot and things didn't come out completely as expected, but hey. This is a compilation of motion capture footage over the summer of 2013 (July 28 - September 7) building the platform portion of the treehouse. By the time I got to putting deck sealant on the deck (done somewhere in mid September), I wasn't interested in setting up the camera so you could watch that likely painfully boring portion. The ladder was built in the garage then installed in place.
I still need to make the railing, but time and money factors have slowed it. That'll likely kick off the spring construction portion, followed by the second level, the enclosed treehouse.
Part 2 is now ready • Rowan's (and his fathe...
Treehouse, 808, and 303. I had no idea it would be such a sublime combination.
Everybody needs a 303. 😎
Hello my friend.. All the best to your channel and hope you have a wonderful day !!!
nice work Chris - the shape gave me the idea of building a pirate ship/tree house with
the trees as masts - my 7 year old son loves all things nautical, big Master & Commander fan. Will keep checking for part 2 - cheers
Thanks!! This would have been so much easier if I just did a rectangular base, but it's not what I wanted and it didn't fit my original theme idea. The actual house part is for most intents and purposes done - just need to complete some internal electricals and rebuild the windows, but the next video is just waiting for me to be able to compile some basic shots that have been giving me a hard time. Unfortunately, large chunks ended up being just stills, as often, I didn't have the time nor will to set up the camera when I was just going to be running in and out of the treehouse and garage over and over. The third (hahaha) video will likely be a walkthrough.
I didn't get much input from my son when I started, as the input from a 4 year old isn't going to be the same as his input 4 years later.
I really need to get the second video up. :/
I tried to draw/sketch everything first, but eventually, I just made things up as I went, after researching what methods would be used to construct an actual house.

it's looks strong as heck.
Wow😍😍😍😍👍👍👍👍👍
Good video👍👍👍👍👍
I wish we saw it up close to see the bolts used to put up the 1st two long boards. Looks like they held from the bottom cupped on drilled in the center of the wood
I meant for the 3rd part to show more details, I've just been a ridiculous slacker in making it.
There are insets on the underneath of the beams that both keep it from floating off in either direction.
Did you use TABs for the initial braces? Looks awesome!
I did not. Crazy expensive at the time. If I were to build it now, having a little more disposable income, I'd go with TABs. I'm using lag screws.
Awesome...one man army! :)
thanks... part two (construction) starting up soon
Where is it :(
I know... I owe an update or two... thanks for the prod.

Kool.. thanks for sharing
Buen vídeo interesante grande maestro ERES un genio.
Oddly, this video is getting a little more attention, so I guess I should get my butt in gear and make the follow up video for it. I have footage of the upper build, or at least a bunch of it. So, I'll make ti a new year's goal to get it up with stills and more information. I'd say the project is about 90% done, though it may never be "done"... who am I kidding. :)
Can't wait to see it!
haha I was just about to post and ask what ever happened to the rest of the Tree-House lol. Can't wait to see it! :)

This is great rowan is my last name was checking out tree house builds and this popped up in my feed
Awesome nice one 👌👌👌
thanks!
nice
love this! if not to personal about how much $ did you spend on the supplies? looking at building one as a Christmas gift. Thanks!
Oh man... at this point, I'm not sure. Not a ton, but likely *all said and done*, nearly $1500-2000 is my guess. Spread out over the years, it's really not too bad. The 2@ 2x12x12' were the single most expensive items, I think. Did NOT need 2x12. 2x10s would have been sufficient. If you've not seen the second part, it should make more clear the expenses. The solar panel was about $45 in parts (cells, "wire", and found materials in the garage.
I tried to use what I had for as much as possible.
If I had designed the bottom level as just a rectangle, there would have been a good deal less waste in decking.
Hope that gives a general idea.
How did you attached to the tree? How did you allow for movement between the trees? How did you choose the right bolts fro the load?
Tree Attachment Bolts (TABs) are the "industry standard" way, but they are crazy expensive and require large augers or drill bits (1.5"). Also, for a recreational treehouse, I believe they are overkill.
I used 3/4" lag bolts. Both the deck shown here and the "house" part I put up subsequently each have 2-bys across the tree spans, mounted freely/resting on the lag bolts in recesses.

,_|________|_____...
|____i-o-i________...
In the ascii art, the i's are cut up into the beams and the "o" is the end of the lag bolt. A plate is undeneath to prevent skipping off. Each place has about 4" of space for tree movement.
The platform/house are then build on top of those.
As for choosing... that was difficult. Because of the intense marketing the TAB makers do, they make you feel like you're a bad person if you don't use TABs, so I tried to find information about sheer strength and bend resistance. I couldn't find anything. After asking some engineer friends, they said the 3/4" bolts should be plenty. One TAB is about $80 or more. I bought 10 of these lags for about $40. (www.boltdepot.com/Product-Details.aspx?product=2851)
3 years in and they are still straight and I don't see any issues.
I really do need to post an updated video (with at least stills) of the project. It's not 100% done, but pretty close.
What about growth? As the tree grows how will you let it expand and not push the beams outward?
There's about 4" of float laterally, maybe a little more. The only things connected directly to the trees are the bolts.
The trees are over likely well over 50 years old (I could find out probably - an estimator I found for beechs says the beech is possibly 150, but I'd be surprised - diameters of each are about 25"), which means I'd expect less than .2" of diameter gain per year at most going forward, giving at least 10-15 years before it should be a serious problem, by which time I'll have likely either taken it down or altered it. I could "easily" raise or lower each level to accommodate new bolts with more lateral distances and put new beams if I felt like it wasn't going to make it as long as I would "need". My guess is that one of the trees will possibly die first.
I do check on the spacing and bolt health each season.
Thanks for the questions!!
Very Good. thks
What was the size of your joists and maximum cantilever? Did you use 2’ spacing?
Not sure what you mean re the 2' spacing. If by cantilever you mean how far beyond the sides does the structure extend, about 4 feet on the bottom platform. It's a little wide, but there are caps under the beams where the lag screws are to counter and rotational movement. I'm not light and haven't felt much notable tilt while standing at the extremes.
The music is harsh, the tree house is great.
did he actually use lots of nail and nail the plank in to the tree trunk?
There is literally only 9 points of permanent contact with the trees. The level in this video has 5 because I miss-screwed one bolt and had to put a second next to it, and the top (forthcoming video) layer has only 4. In this level, there are 2x12s that float on the bolts in chambers that allow for movement of about 4 inches. Everything is then mounted on those beams.
Minimum three to one on any cantilevered space please. So for a two foot cant you need six feet on the other side. Music is strangely intoxicating.
did you ever finish the treehouse? would like to see how it turn out
It's still a WIP, but nearing completion. The phone I captured following
timelapse footage seems to have found a hiding place in the house, so I
have to find it before I can make additional videos, though this summer
I didn't capture anything as I put siding and other things on it, so
the final stages will be boring slideshows. I built a solar panel that
powers a 12v batter for lights and cieling fan and charging 5v usb
devices. It's got windows a locking door and more... but yeah, proof...
gotta work on that. (and learn to ignore people who post negative
comments about the music)

Great job! The part 2. not avaiable?
I suck at timing... was supposed to put it together over xmas break. ASAP is the best I can say. :(
no problem. good luck. ;)
Please do add the second phase. Thank you.
czcams.com/video/cZzl4kq3qL0/video.html
i want to know how it is attached. what size bolts and...
I think they are 3/4" x 10" lag screws. It's been a while.
Congratulations on the project! Lucky kid!
Can you please tell name and author of the music on the video?
Cheers!
My son does enjoy some time up there. A few more details to complete and it should be comfy.
As for the music, my ego hopes it's not because you hate it, because the trax in this one are mine. They are a bit old: soundcloud.com/technosnake "Come Away" and "Zoids"
Theres one thing that i love about this work. The fact that it is taking it's time to develop... kind of like a tree does. I belive this timeframe might have a positive effect on your kid, as he learns to appreciate the value of things. Or, might just be me romanticizing...
As for the song, now i understand why shazam was not being helpful!
I like it a lot! It sounded like Kraftwerk and AphexTwin (hope you take it as a compliment!)
Will surely take some time to listen to your music folder!
Keep it up!
That's a great point. Whether he gets it or not is to be seen. I do have him help when I can. He helped paint the walls and I'll have him help install the USB outlets in the walls.
You are too kind wrt the music. Kraftwrrk and RDJ have always been favorites. The snippet tracks I've made over the last decade could total an album... I'm just not focused enough.

I wanna know how much thay are to build i am big fan of tree house i love one them he as made i just wnna know what he charging to make them ..
Bom demais vou fazer uma pra mim
This ended up being around $2000-ish, including the solar stuff. If I started it over, I'd spend more for Tree Attachment Bolts and a few better options.
Great job on the tree house so far. Love the figure 8 part of it. Can't wait to see the rest of it. It just so happens me and my dad recently built a big tree house for my sisters 3 year old. I must say it was our first thing we built ever together and it was tons of fun. It was just the 2 of us and we worked 3 and half weeks and All in all i think we did a good job. The only thing left we did not get to was staining the siding and deck. we will have to do that next trip. If anyone wants to see what ours turned out like here is a image. imgur.com/PIw4uEh i wish i would have video taped it and did more of a build video but we were so busy and it was the holidays. Anyway, great job and i look forward to seeing the rest of your tree house build.
bob smith yeah, for once I thought ahead wrt capturing footage, though eventually it's all about getting up there and working and the camera (phone) setup just gets in the way. I have my second video all but done but just haven't had time to finalize it. last week I put up drywall and painted and some other enhancements, but they will show up in the "walk through" video which will be much easier than the time lapse editing.
oh, and I love yours. the bent roof is awesome and the crooked windows...so Burton-esque. I thought of both, but it didn't have with my theme, which ended up not being integral in the end because I'm not an actual elf Lord from Lothlorien.
oh, and same with the climbing wall.

Nice but where is the treehouse?
Hah, so true! This is why I couldn't be a youtuber for a living...
I have the video of the next part mostly compiled, but it's not to my liking and the software is being touchy, so I'm defaulting to LAZY. I promise, it's coming, as well as a video walkthrough to follow soon after.

Holy cow. I just watched this through again and I have to say, OpenShot is a terrible editor. This video would be about 2/3 the length if it didn't arbitrarily add repeated segments of footage. This also explains why getting part two up is taking so long... I don't have a nice professional package any longer, Microsoft got rid of their video editor, which is really as powerful as I needed for this project and other free options weren't happy with all my still frame imports. Anyway. I have used newer versions of OpenShot and they did not fair any better, in fact, the one for linux, as of 2016 was worse. It crashed all the time. I lost tons of hours of work (bad on my for not saving more often). So, I thank anyone interested in the next part for their patience over the years. If videos can be replaced with updated versions here, perhaps I'll work on reediting the first one too.
Chris Moran thanks you, i love to have a tree house but looking at it if we drill and screw heavy metal in the tree trunk will it cut the life span of the mother nature? Thank you.
The tree heals well... but the less holes you make the better. There are only a total of 9 holes in the tree for bolts. I tap the maple for sugaring every year and it heals those holes up quite well.
