1873 was a landmark year. Also Levi Strauss invented his “blue jeans,” and the first commercial version of barbed wire was introduced.

Great show. The 1873 is a pleasure to shoot. Mine was made in 1878. As a side note...when you do your intro and name famous folks from Tennessee maybe mention Larry Taylor. He was just awarded the Medal of Honor for his gallant actions as a helicopter pilot during the Vietnam war. He lives in Signal Mountain.

Dear Mr. Hickok, I've been a firearms enthusiast since childhood. I have a great love of all things cowboy and black powder. I am also a 2A supporter and understand how important it is that we continue to advocate against the eroding of those rights. But, sometimes I get fed with the forced politicization or guns, and just want to go hang out on the range and enjoy one of my favorite hobbies. Thank you for giving us all a place to do that and learn about the history of firearms. We are indebted to you beyond words. Much love to you and John for your friendship and all the work you do.

A very nice piece of functional history! I have a Uberti 1873 in 44 Magnum but my favorite load is a 200 gr cast bullet at 1100-1200 FPS somewhat close to a 44-40 load. Very fun to shoot and very accurate still carrying a nice wallop on the steel!

    Evening,Sir.
That Winchester is a gift from God, and the family that presented it to you.
It was meant to be in your hands for all of us to enjoy.
I too, was gifted one of those rifles at the ripe old age of 11 years old.
    I'm 60 now.
And I don't really have any one worthy of that rifle to pass it on to.
    It's in 38 WCF.
    Made in 1893.
XXX walnut, with a pistol grip stock, with crescent buttplate.
Lyman peep sight from the factory on the tang.
    And case colored reciever.
I plan to be in Tulsa in October, with that rifle, hopefully to pass it on to someone who can appreciate it as long as I have.
The rifle is truly a work of art.
    Original.
As it left the Winchester Factory in a completely different period of history, that I'm afraid this country will never have the opportunity to re live.

I watched "The man that shot Liberty Valance" again yesterday. For many years I wondered why the Doc had not figured out that Rance did not shoot Liberty. I thought it would have been obvious if a 30-30 round had hit him versus a 45 colt slug. Only recently did I come to the realization that the rifle was not a 30-30 but likely a 44-40 pistol caliber similar to the handgun cartridge and that is why it was not obvious who shot Liberty.

I recently picked up an Uberti 1873 in .45 Colt that shoots really well, but it's not quite the same as shooting an original. I do have an original 1888 Trapdoor Springfield that's a lot of fun to shoot.
