    Another great video.
My dad worked for Winchester here in Connecticut ,
Even though I was a child /young boy while he was there I have clean and clear memories of meeting factory workers from the "decision makers" to the super talented people on the production floor....I recall the WIDE plank wood floors .and a very specific smell.
I remember thinking .."woe. Oliver Winchester walked on these very floors and looked out these same windows" I was just a boy , and felt very lucky to walk through this huge part of American History. Dad owned 3 model 1876 and it was the first big bore rifle I fired .
The best day was when my dad had a model 94 stack made for me and fitted to my BB gun ! Sounds silly now. But I was the coolest kid on the block !

A decent reloading setup will dramatically reduce the price of ammo.
Once you get the brass, which will be easily the most expensive component, it shoud be much only slightly more expensive to make than .45 Colt, .44 Special, etc.

      *****
Unless you're doing it the wrong way, you shouldn't be reloading for 4-5 dollars a shot, even with as unusual caliber as .40-90, especially if you use cast bullets.
You might wind up spending that much for the really huge cartridges that require expensive jacketed bullets (think .50 BMG, .338 Lapua, or the monster Nitro Express cartridges), but certainly not for a medium large straight walled rifle cartridge.

The 76 Win. with the full length stock is in my opinion the prettiest of all the Winchesters. The first one I saw was the rifle Tom Selleck used in the movie Crossfire Trail. I did some research on the 1876 Musket Rifle and found out that nearly all were sent to the RCMP for their service rifles.

1967, Stationed in Topeka Kansas. A small gun shop had bought a lever action rifle collection. The husband had passed away. The wife sold the collection. The shop was small in area. So many rifles the owner had them leaning against the front of display cases. I picked up, must have weighed 8 ,9 pounds. Seeing the rifle you'er shooting tells me I had picked a " 76". I asked " how much for this rifle?" He didn't even look up, busy putting tags on rifles. His answer was " $ 35.00

The '76 Winchester is one of my all time favorite rifles! To put it in more modern terms, size wise the '76 Winchester is to the '73 Winchester what the AR10 is to the AR15, although chronologically they are reversed. I've been absolutely in love with the '76 since I first saw Tom Selleck shoot that '76 carbine in 'Crossfire Trail'. I'd love to own a 'Crossfire Carbine' in .45-60, a full length rifle in .45-75 & a short 'express rifle' in .50-95. A NWMP carbine in .45-75 would be cool too!!!

I have the full-length rifle in .45-75. Ammo is rare as hen's teeth and honest politicians. If you can find "factory" loads, it's somebody using .50-90 or .50 Alaskan brass. Finding dies to reload my own has been difficult, too. I have to say -- the Uberti is a beautiful rifle.

Just saw this video today. I actually have an original 1876 in .45/60. Belonged to my greatgrandfather. Rifle was built in the 1880s, blackpowder only, last cartridges I found were loaded in the 1920s. Last time I fired it (1993) was with 1890s ammumintion. A 26-28” octagon barrel gets heavy fast. It shares storage space with an original 1886 built Trapdoor Springfield, also my greatgrandfather’s rifle. Probably cost him $3-5/ea through Bannerman’s at the turn of the last century. Both rifles need a lot of tlc, have been in storage for decades.

I had to polish all the internal parts since the factory failed to do a good job. I never got it to work right and sold it for a loss. I have fired the Uberti 1876 and experienced none of the problems I had with Chaparral..Do yourself a favor and save up to buy uberti 1876 you will be glad you did.

  • @randalldunkley1042
    @randalldunkley1042 Před 2 lety

The problem I found with my .45-75 is the thick ,sticky, grease that Charter or Chaparral applied to the moving parts. It needs a full take down out of the box to clean it out and put in a light lube. I just use WD-40. What was happening in cold weather especially was the grease actually locked up the firing pin or made it so stiff it would not hit the primer hard enough. That's what you see here. Also on examination there is a witness mark on the firing pin that shows it is dragging on the bolt pin bore. Polishing the firing pin cleaned that up. The case hardening is actually an dip and not actual case hard as is the poly stock finish which is no different than much of the imported furniture you may see today. As far as expensive ammo we must remember that it all boils down to a trade off. Fun verses no fun. If we knew how much a wife or husband would eventually cost we wouldn't go near them.

One kind of sad thing is that the Win 86 is very late compared to Wild West history.

I read in a review of these Chaparral rifles, several years ago, that the reason the grain on the stocks was so beautiful is that they were actually printed with that pattern before the finish was applied. Chaparral is apparently no longer in business, but there are still some of these rifles around at dealers, still new in the box. They don't have a very good reputation for functioning. Uberti does still make the '76.

I read in an interesting article that Winchester show cased their new Centennial rifle at the world's fair which took place in Chicago in 1876 and that it was the only repeating rifle with " successful, documented use in the northern plains buffalo slaughter."
Even more amazing is the story the author relates about a series of trials Oliver Winchester subjected his new model rifle to putting to rest concerns sportsmen of the day supposedly had concerning the strength of the repeating rifle with all of it's small, perhaps delicate moving parts and the compatibility of such a design with cartridges advertised to, no doubt, rival the single shot buffalo guns of the day.Apparently rather copious amounts of lead and gun powder were used in increasingly larger and larger successive loads before the rifle's action was finally breached.

I remember watching some cowboy show or movie on Lonestar with my dad, they where having a shootout and the older guy that joined the group shot a bad guy through a door, he laughs and shows that the trigger on his rifle was tied back with a snare and he'd just pull the hammer back with his thumb and let go. I'm not advising anyone to try that but this reminded me of that scene

I had the same issue with some 30-06 ammo I made up. I realized it was due to not uniforming the primer pockets. This caused the the primers to not be seated totally in the pocket which caused the issue. Once I uniformed the primer pockets I didn't have any more light primer strikes.

Looks great but wow what a waste of money. Not a gun I would own. I will say this...that was one of my all time favorite videos. Hickok 45 you were flinching like crazy. Had a good chuckle at that. What I like the most out of your videos...you don't hide anything. Your truthful and show the good, bad and ugly of the firearms you are using. That is why I come here first. Thank you.

I have a 1876 Chaparral rifle and treasure it as one of the finer rifles I have owned. The 45-75 ammo is hard to find ( never over counter ) but you can buy brass or reform Winchester .348 brass. Modern steel and case hardening makes for for more strength for common sense loads, The Uberti rile is very fine and good, but I have not seen a Uberti as pretty as the Chaparral. Either one if you see it for sale, grab it, they are few and far between.

    Just US$4,00?
Down here In The Nanny State of Brazil, 44-40 goes for about US$8,00 a pop. Ammunition for these guns are family heirlooms.
By the way, We call the Winchester 1873 the Yellow-belly.
Thanks for showing it's bug brother!

Both my Uberti 73's and 1 of my 66's did this and all 3 needed the extractor end where it meets the barrel filled down. They seem to make them to long and it binds the firing pin.

The Uberti copies are MUCH better made than the Chaparrals were. Notice I said WERE, as they are no longer made. The company went out of business some years ago-too many problems with QC and distribution. There is a reason why you don't see any Chaparrals at any CAS events. They are junk. Avoid them at all costs.
