Red Meat & Cancer: 3 Thoughts from a Doctor - 2023

  • We've been told for a few decades that eating meat is somehow bad for our health.
But we have been eating lots of meat in our diet for many eons, so can it be bad?
In this video, we will discuss the 3 thoughts you should have when any "scientific" claim is made that seems to fly in the face of what we have always done.
Indeed, science has given us many wonderful things and will continue to do so. But, sometimes science is hijacked and used as a paid advertisement for certain products, sometimes science is mis-performed due to the researcher's preconceived notions on the topic, and sometimes the results of research are not protected in a controlled fashion.
Whether you should eat meat, eat red meat, eat processed meat, or eat charred meat are vital questions to your overall health as a person, and to our overall health as a species. What do you think of these studies and what they purport to show??

I love the truth! If red meat was truly harmful, my great-grand parents would have figured it out. My personal health has greatly improved while increasing my consumption of red meat. I realize that doesn't prove anything. But being 70 y o, my health is precious to me. I don't need medicine anymore and I feel fine. So does my wife. As a child, I did not like to eat meat. As I grew up, I started eating things like chicken, but I would not touch read meat except ground meat on rare occasions. It wasn't because I thought it was bad. It was because I did not like to chew it. Then as an adult, I was trained nutritionally as part of teaching aerobics to eat white meat like chicken, no red meat and no fried foods. High carb, low fat. I ate very strictly that way for 11 years. Guess what!? I ended up getting breast cancer. Go figure! So for the past 8-1/2 years that I have been cancer free, I have not just introduced red meat into my diet, but I am for the past 4 years primarily keto-carnivore. It is what keeps me well! My doctor loves my blood reports and my mammograms and my ultrasounds and my bone density scans, etc.! I could go on! There is no reason to limit those meats in our diet, and I'm quite certain they are beneficial. I only wish I had known sooner, but absolutely a lesson learned!

I mean yes. If you consume grains, sugar, salt and eggs it is bad. You should be eating nutritatrian diet with anti cancer medicinal properties. Greens, beans, onions, mushrooms, berries and seeds. But you ignore that and go back to diseased red meat, bacon and ketosis that creates free radicals. You will be helping the conventional doctors, pharma and meat industry immensely. Cancer, diabetes, blood pressure medication, statins, pain killers. That's their profession.

The only study this dude cites was to determine guidelines for eating red meat and by their own grading scale the claim to eat red meat gets "weak recommendation, low-certainty of evidence" and the researchers had to update the study because they didn't disclose funding from the International Life Sciences Institute, which is a food industry funded lobbying group. You don't have to watch the video, he could be claiming milkshakes cure hair loss, whatever he's saying is not backed up by science.

I wish I had known about keto/carnivore decades ago, my wife might still be alive. I didn't discover it until 6 months before she died of metastatic breast cancer. Too late. But it has lead to a huge improvement in my own health. No longer pre-diabetic, low triglycerides, low A1C, high HDL, quite a bit of weight loss. BTW, Mayo clinic is now requiring patients going in for radiation treatment to be in ketosis first - it improves the efficacy of the treatment and the recovery. One would think if keto is good before you get a bolus of radiation, it would be good all the time.

Not to mention my weight dropped from 205 to 152-I’m 164 today with about 13% body fat and hit the gym 5-6 days a week. Like you, all my bio markers have dramatically improved. My last “prolonged” fast had my ketones beyond the capacity of my Precision X-tra to measure, ie., slightly south, if I’m remembering correctly, of 8 mM. The reason for the elevation was my blood glucose was 48 dL, and in any other circumstances I would have been in a coma. That's good because some days you are hungry and some days you are not, and so you don't need to manually decide when to fast or to eat. It'll sort itself out autonomously. The stomach is smart - feed it the nutritionally appropriate diet and it'll know what to do on it's own. Let your body/stomach tell you, not just your brain regarding manual thought processes. Anyways, your stomach has neurons connecting to your brain which is the very part of your brain that signals hunger... it's not just only manual computational logic whilst ignoring your stomach. There's no need for manual logic intervention, just let it automate. That's better and more efficient logic.

Secondly, if I boasted, then I also boasted about dramatic weight loss, dramatic improvement on appearance, improvement on hair quality, amazing increase in stamina, etc .. why did you miss all that, and just single out erections?
Check out most keto / carnivore commentary on results and you will hear similar stories. All boasting?
Doesn't fit your vegan world view, I know, I know ..
I have a nephew 38 years old, who had erectile dysfunction for 5 years. I put him onto keto and then carnivore diet and the result for him after just 3 weeks has been amazing .. I would elaborate but that would probably conflict your perverted sensibilities further.

That being said I do like my nights out drinking from time to time😉 I've watched your videos on ketosis and alcohol but wondered if drinking a lot on a night out has a worse affect when on keto? More damaging maybe to drink half a bottle of vodka on keto than on a higher carb diet? Video or brief comment would be appreciated, but regardless of that thank you again! Keep doing your thing👊🏻 OH AND CONGRATULATIONS ON THE LATEST ADDITION TO YOUR FAMILY!!

Red meat is just too expensive to eat all the time. I prefer a quality cut of red meat infrequently and chicken/turkey the rest of the time.

Most of these conclusions seem to be a people jumping to conclusions with a correlation/causation argument. People want easy answers, but many times we don't have enough knowledge. But if you can spin a direct "cause" then you can easily sell a cure.

I would appreciate including in this discussion on how factory farmed meat is different than grass fed, grass finished meat. Our ancestors didn't have to deal with growth hormones, antibiotics or GMO glyphosate saturated feedstocks.

Grass fed is better. If all you can afford is grain fed, then eat grain fed. Still much, much better for you than ramen noodles. Organ meats are best overall, though.

The most apparent difference in nutrient I find is potassium, which grassfed seems to have higher of. Nutrition data for meat can be sketchy because it doesn't take into account how the animal is raised. "Grassfed" can mean the animal is eating grains for a month or two before slaughtered.
SELFNutritionData: 100g of grassfed ground beef have 289mg of potassium.
USDA: 100g of conventional ground beef have 286mg.
USDA: 100g of ground bison (grassfed animals) have 328mg.
A dairy brand called Snowville which is 100% grassfed dairy cows, the milk is yellow. The producer claims 1 cup of their milk have 517mg of potassium. 1 cup of conventional milk have 322mg.
PMC2846864 A review of fatty acid profiles and antioxidant content in grass-fed and
      grain-fed beef.
      "Grass-based
diets have been shown to enhance total conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) isomers, trans vaccenic acid (TVA), a precursor to CLA, and omega-3s. While the overall concentration of total SFAs is not different between feeding regimens, grass-finished beef tends toward a higher proportion of cholesterol neutral stearic FA, and less cholesterol elevating SFAs such as myristic and palmitic FAs. Several studies suggest that grass-based diets elevate precursors for Vitamin A and E, as well as cancer fighting antioxidants such as glutathione and superoxide dismutase activity as compared to grain-fed contemporaries."
doi: 10.1017/S1742170509990214 Vitamins A, E and fatty acid composition of the eggs of caged hens and pastured hens
"Compared to eggs of the caged hens, pastured hens’
eggs had twice as much vitamin E and long-chain omega-3 fats, 2.5-fold more total omega-3 fatty acids, and less than half the ratio of omega-6:omega-3 fatty acids".

@@someguy43210 I supplement potassium by adding NuSalt to my bouillon. Grass-fed beef has only 55 mg of Omega-3 in a 4oz serving. I eat mackerel which has over 1,500 mg of Omega-3. Most of the information I got regarding beef it's from universities that do studies of the nutrients grass finished vs. Grain finished. Where I live in Kansas City, all the cattle are raised in pastures. As far as eggs are concerned, ordinary store-bought eggs are fine. But pastured eggs are better and so I have some chickens in my backyard. The thing is we don't want to get overly picky about everything surrounding our meat diet. Just plain old meat is good for people and they need to be encouraged to eat it. And some people can't afford to go anywhere but the supermarket. They're still better off if they get over their fear of red meat because they will get healthier.

I always get so irrtated when they start about the redmeat and cancer ting. I think the procesed food is the problem and all the crap companys put in to food. I eat meat almust every day, mustly lamb and mutton as that is what we have on our farm. I think our meat is far much better than any thing you can get in the store. We even slaughter at home and nothing added in to the meat. Thanks for this post I could not agree more about human as a speices has always eaten meat.
