Big lesson learned about asking thy neighbors. It took me trial and error and years to work up the courage to ask my neighbor if I could discharge runoff via a pipe to a creek behind his backyard because my yard is a low point surrounded by other properties. He understood my situation and was cool with it.
Good neighbors are worth a fortune and well worth looking after.
It sounds like you're a pretty cool neighbor to start with!

Videos like this are why I keep coming back to watch and learn. Need to see the mistakes and how they were fixed to get the best result. No doubt Carson's house build will never have a drainage issue thanks to what he learned dealing with water at the garage shop. DIYers appreciate the whole story. Excellent episode.

this 2-parter just feels like boys troubleshooting a large drainage problem and dealing with issues whenever it occurs, so in the end both you and Carson learned a whole lot in the process, and that is the kind of knowledge that sticks to you throughout your whole life
The ducks were the true stars of the videos! I mean Shawn and Carson were instrumental (LOL), but I loved how they were curious about everything and closely hanging around for any snack they dug up. Overall, great video and enjoyed the lessons being highlighted by Shawn! Good luck to Carson on building his house!

Catch basin was always my go to. Thanks to Shawn I think differently now.
Very interesting 2 part series. Carson is a champ for agreeing to show all the decisions made and carried out, and then corrected. I was thinking watching that 8" pipe going in what a lot of work it was and if the garage was higher and culverts cut it would be so much easier. Those points were addressed, and sometimes you have to go with your best estimate at the time. But a lot of water is a lot of water and it was great to see how it all came out after cutting those big ole culverts. A lot of issues besides water covered in this series and that's what sets you apart Shawn. I really appreciate the discussions of ethical behavior, how to work with a client, and how to work with a friend, what you have to think about, etc.
Shawn is a pretty smart cat when it comes to drainage for sure!

Kudos to Carson for going back to the school bench and redefining parts of his belief system addressing the parts of his mindset that was working against a smooth solution.
Now that steep learning curve took him to a whole new level of understanding and confidence addressing whatever it is that needs to be looked at in the future without the need to go through that steep learning process as aggressive as it used to be faced.

oh my that's a lot of water. Glad he was able to talk to the neighbor and just keep the water completely away from the building. That makes the most sense and when you have a neighbor who doesn't care, it is a no brainer to to do it that way. 👍 The ducks were rowdy. lol Your honesty and going back to client's homes/businesses after a rainstorm is why I like your channel. Too many drainage channels that never show if it actually worked.
The catch basin became the primary drainage path vs the French drain with the swale built behind the fence. Basically 80% of the drainage equation was taken out of effect.
The final swale is the ultimate solution like you said.
Yes! I always try to deal with problem water as high up as possible (at the source). The swale he dug pretty much solved everything in one pass.

Wow, this is one of your best videos ever. I can’t believe you guys worked with that 8 inch pipe-what a pain. I think 6 inch would’ve been adequate given the flow coming out. Maybe removing catch basin cover during storms would have helped with capacity. Super tough project and I really appreciate your honesty throughout so we can all learn. Thank you so much for sharing.
After everything else, it looks like the drainage pipes are mostly not utilized.

When I say mistake, it’s not really, you now have a system that does you gutters so it was only a bit more time and unfortunately expense that wasn’t needed but as they say in aviation “learn from other people’s mistakes as you won’t live long enough to make them all yourself!” By the way Carson that is a great shed and your lake looks amazing, you have put a lot of work into it, good luck with the house build bet it will be super cool too. 😀👋🇬🇧

Completely negated the need for a french drain with that swale, which looks like it was the correct solution all along. Live and learn. Nice property and I can recall seeing it in a few other projects.
That's the dries FD I've ever installed. Oh well, it's ready to accept water if it needs to. Haha

The prices we pay for schedule 40 PVC, any PVC fittings for that matter and pipe is absolutely criminal now.

I know but that PVC really works well. I say it's still worth it.
@@GCFD I think it's more of a case of what choice do we have? I actually ordered and installed one of those 24 inch drain box a few weeks ago and it was around $180 delivered.

A great pair of videos, Shawn. The problem solving process here was a bit like the water at Carson's garage - a bit of a meander at first but everything lined up correctly in the end. All the best to Carson with his future developments and to you, Shawn. Thanks for sharing.
One technique I use to get an almost perfect circular cut around PVC pipe is to wrap a sheet of A4, A3 or newspaper around the pipe with all edges meeting up along the paper edge. Then I just trace the edge of the paper with a black marker. Any imperfections in the cut can be hone back to the marker line using a grinder. I congratulate Carson for allowing honesty to shine through so that we all benefit from this endeavour.

That's what is scary to me. It's dealing with an unknown amount of water. This is why I always try to deal with water at the highest point (i.e. closest to the source). Instead of dealing with water at the bottom where the problem is.

You must get tremendous rainfall where you’re working. I live in a reasonably dry part of Australia and we have to catch as much rain as possible to fill our big tanks for usage. Some properties are completely on rainfall only so these require huge poly tanks. Pretty much every house has a rain water tank.
It’s so unusual to watch plumbing to remove water rather than storing it but I’m really enjoying watching your work. Well done. I’m learning a lot. 😊

Really, one of the best ways to learn, is to find out what did not work, or did not work as well as you wanted it to. People can tell you all day long, but experience is really the best teacher.
I think so too Tom. When I taught biology labs, I would often show what not to do and found it as helpful as showing what to do.

Thanks Carson, Shawn I loved that wrap up. We learn from our mistakes, unfortunately it usually takes making them to learn our lesson. Had Carson never learned this, his house build would be much worse. Also keep in mind Shawn is a drainage teacher, and his students may get things wrong sometimes, and that’s okay. 👍
That's really how I'm looking at this. The most important thing is getting the house correct. If that took the garage flooding a couple times after we installed the drainage system, then it was well worth it. 👍

I had a very similar idea with a catch basin next to my foundation to catch surface water. I will have to do some rethinking as the heavy rain section has steered me away. Great video and and thanks Carson
Erik - Try to address the water before it lands near the foundation. Is it gutter water or water from an uphill area? Try to address the water at the highest point (close to source). Best luck!

Not always a fan of French drains, especially in this situation. As Shawn has always said, best to deal with the surface water and take it away where you can see it.

Great job, most important part of any job is to show mistakes and solutions , so other people can learn and avoid them. For my personal not professional opinion - for that amount of water flow during storm catchbasin had no enough capacity, and I am not really sure any catchbasin will handle that river, so redirecting water before it goes toward building was the only correct solution. Really appreciate your videos Sean, and based on your knowledge and videos I have built my own water catching/diverting solution. thanks again.

Really interesting video Shawn. Over the years I have learned and shared with others that if you're going to buy a house or piece of land go there in the worst of weather like a heavy downpour or after a big snow storm. See the worst conditions you'll have to deal with. I know real estate agents want to take you to show you on a bright sunny day in May and sell you on a rosy picture. That's much different than having to wade through a flooded driveway or backyard. Anyway, great video as usual Shawn the friendly banter is always fun to watch too.
That is so true Paul. Often you can see the problem even if it's not raining with a little help from this channel. Many of my viewers say now they see drainage problems in potential houses.
