After years of watch Ollie @DrainAddict, I was wondering what the big deal was with cleaning out the full pipe... then I saw the homeowner-grade pressure washer and Amazon special jetting set-up. 😂😂 Makes perfect sense now.
I still wonder, if (with the right equipment like ollie's jetter) flood in a new PVC pipe under the walkway.
Ollie is king. I'd almost move north to Sydney just to know he was there if needed.
That corrugated pipe makes beautiful compost. I can see why it's so highly recommended. 🌱
A 5000 PSI jetter like the one Drain Addict and Penetrator youtube guys might come in handy. Their powerful jets open down spouts all the time. But mainly in Australia you hardley would find corrugated used the same way it ia used in USA.
It would probably blast a hole right through that thin walled corrugated pipe.
When I first bought our house, I went with the cheap budget corrugated pipe route, I even meticulously ensured a slope with no low spots. But after digging it back up and attempting to reseal the foundation, the pipe didn't get laid back down or even reconnected by the contractor. More water started seeping into the basement and the millions of earwigs living in those pipes, I pulled the trigger & rented a ditch witch, redid the 100+ foot PVC SC40 run connecting 4 gutters, down hill to the driveway. Thanks to your videos I knew what to do; and had a full bubble the whole run! No more water issues here
Wow that's a big project Kaden! It sounds like you did a fantastic job! Thanks for sharing! Full Bubble!
@@GCFD sure was! I had to go around the Holly bushes, under the front deck, and peel back 30 feet of weed barrier under a rock garden to the bottom decorative retaining wall where I poked the pipe thru. Alot of work for 1 guy, but I finally got it 💪
@@kadenen I bet that felt good when it was done.
Great vid! Homeowners probably need there gutters cleaned out too
I mentioned it so hopefully they did?
I know it will be a big disappointment to you to never have a corrugated clean out challenge again 😂 but it was a wonderful swan song 😅 great video again Shawn!
Thank you Sarah!
What a great video for NOT using corrugated. Once again GCDF is proven correct straight pipe is better…..Bobby
Haha for sure Bobby!
That catch basin just shows the homeowner isn't going to stick to any sort of maintenance routine.
You could say that. We did a great job of cleaning things out so it’ll flow for as long as possible.
Yea it will fill up like that again eventually rendering the pvc useless. Can't move water anywhere when the catch basin is full of soil. Homeowner needs to do his part in keeping things clean.
Pvc or corrugated, it all needs to be maintained. Corrugated installed correctly works great if you maintain it and aren’t putting much weight on it.
@@jamiepippin3892 why not throw in a pvc pipe after you’ve done all the labor instead of a corrugated?
It’s certainly not a bad idea if someone is willing to pay extra for it.
In areas with overhead trees, you cannot beat Stainless steel gutter guards and Schedule 40 PVC pipe to take all that collected rainwater away.
Thanks for another great video Shaun 👍
Thanks a lot to your video! I jack hammered a concrete slab sloping towards the house and packed loads of top soils slanting away from the house. No more flooding in basebasement in last 3 years during sustained heavy rains.
Dranage an a botany lesson. We done sir.👏👏👏
Haha!
That’s what I’m saying , came outta no where but he does talk about bugs periodically when he finds them. It’s cool
Shawn you are a very patient man and your goal to do the best job for the customer shows. My hats off to you. Bravo.
Thank you! this was such a pain but we got it done well.
just a note (I know it wouldn't solve your crushed pipe problem and I agree that corrugated is seriously bad idea for this application), there are way more powerful cleaning jets with big barrels out there that cut roots several cm in diameter.
I’m not interested in getting more into cleanout which is why I haven’t invested in better equipment. I’ve looked at a couple setups that would work way better.
@@GCFD the head of jet has blocked, open and clean the head
At this point it would shred through the pipe itself which defies the purpose
Proper tools for the job are required. Pressure Washer and Snake will not touch the problem you encountered.
This is why I only use smooth Schedule 40 for drainage work. Dirt can't be caught and roots have a very hard time to get into joints
For the custom shallow angles I have had luck using a heat gun to warm up either a fitting or a section of the pipe and bending it where I need it to go. I have used that trick to open up a 22.5 to make kind of a compound transition with one fitting and I once needed to offset a riser to line up with a downspout. Used on a straight run, like you did with the ferncos, it eliminates that joint so the inside remains smooth. The dewalt cordless heat gun does the job, a bit slower than a corded but quicker than a trip to the store if you don’t have a fernco on hand.
Thanks for that, Sean I always enjoy watching your vlogs. Cheers brother
It doesn't look like corrugated pipe was the problem. Just that they let gutters and pipes will up with leaves and other things. Need to filter that out and catch it in basins before going into the pipes. Then proper maintenance in this heavily wooded property. The gutters are probably also all clogged above the pipes you removed and likely still won't drain with your repairs. They are all just going to clog again in a few years.
Looks like your fan club is behind you all the way. We love the work you do and the way you give heart and soul.Keep up the amazing work
I do enjoy your videos and would love to see more! I like all that you do from the drainage to concrete to the biking trails... you are a well-rounded person and have good help as well. Keep up the good work!
Thank you Fozzy! I do a ton of other cool stuff too that doesn't make it onto the channel....
Fantastic video
Great job Shawn and crew. Really enjoyed the video. Man that pipe was clogged it probably hasn't worked in years.
Great Job Once again, I will always say its a job and someone needs to do it. We always put our head to the grind stone and get the work completed.
You can definately tell that job was a pain. I certainly don't blame you for your decision..love your videos!!
Nice job, I love that video about corrugated, and how easy it is to crush and haul away. Great link. Earth worms were in the catch basin.
I learn all kinds of things from these videos! Drainage, wildlife, plant life. 👏👏👏
Haha Ryan. I'm glad you're learning something from my stuff!
Great video
Shawn this has been a great video, PVC is the best stuff for drainage from any home,we only use corrugated in the fields and if you keep them well cleaned they last for ages
That catch basin, should have just talked to the homeowner and cut that 10 feet of concrete and done it right with PVC.
Yep!
You really did a nice job with the schedule 40 PVC fittings. Less maintenance will be required now! Nice job 👍
A very good Monday morning to you all from Wellington Somerset in the UK
That was the best ‘bodge’ I’ve seen for a long time 😊, got the job flowing, might not be pretty but it’ll work, well done 👍
Second post referencing drain addict
If you can purchase the type of machine drain addict channel uses which is 7000 psi or more i forgot his type
But it cut threw a three foot tree stump video a week or two back on his channel
Corrugated or not DA does not kill the pipes
But you must keep your heads clean
So suggested is upgrade your water pressure cleanout system
View his channel
If I was interested in doing more clean out jobs I would definitely upgrade my stuff! Thank you for the recommendation Shaggy!
Great job! We also "love" corrugated pipe and will continue to use it 😉
Anyways, love the downspout videos, have a great Monday!
Frogs like to hang out in the end of the PVC. Not an issue, but makes for an entertaining time when you pull it out. I was modifying a section right at the outfall. Pulled it up, saw something in the end. Swung it like a bat to sling the junk out. A frog went flying! I think he was more surprised than I was. LOL.
I’ll keep an eye out. What type or frog? Pond frog or tree frog?
That is FUNNY 😅🤣😂🤣
It wasn't a tree frog. May have been a toad. I'm not very knowledgeable on amphibians.@@GCFD
What a mess of corrugated - good you got it fixed!
Thank you Jesper!
Great video as always. I would never do that again either. Next time it’s cutting concrete and full replacement.
You said it! 👍👍
I guess I will have to check my gutters that end with corrugated pipe with a slotted end attachment. Good thing they are not buried just covered with mulch. Thanks for the video.
It can help by keeping an eye on things Jim.
I love your additions of info regarding animals (box turtles 🤣) and plant life.
i just wana say, i see your concrete videos and some of the trolls in the comments, as u will find out in the concrete niche, every1 in the comments is a pro, but none of them have a single video of their pours. i do recommend trying a walk behind soft cut the next day. the finish looks pretty good but i must say, as a small youtuber w a crew kinda like yours, you will get a better finish and u can pour it a little dryer if you dont have to worry about cutting joints the same day. btw i have never had 4k psi w fiber crack over night and i saw cut pretty much everything.
just something i have noticed. i know on the east coast it is hard to find finishers that will just come out for a day
7:39, please do more edits like this it was so interesting to learn about that. I have noticed on many of your videos that your so knowledgeable on plants, trees, different animals etc. This was such a great video, continue the great work
Shawn, and to all the guys and gals on the crew WTG great job! 👍 That corrugated stuff is just money stuck in a drain that dont drain.
I like the fact that you still use your textbooks.
once again, excellent video
Thank you!!
I don’t disagree that PVC is superior for flow but I really think high quality gutter guards and catch basins would prevent almost all of these issues with properly installed corrugated pipe. ❤
The corrugated pipe is pretty much useless. The only good thing about it as you say is that it collapses and take up less room in the dump truck. Although these pipes were so full they probably wouldn’t pack down very well. That whole system was a mess.
That is an often overlooked value that’s built right into corrugated pipe. Thanks for doing your part to spread the word Steve!
Great video. No rain footage , sad times.
Probably quicker replacing the beautifully chock filled corrugated with PVC than cleaning them out. Great work. 👍
Looks like a real PIA, but you prevailed Shawn!! I like that new PVC pipe along the walkway, looks good and very effective. Also the plant/botany info at 7:53 was delightful. Thanks for another fun one! 🙂
Thank you Sheena! I almost didn't make this video (it's been over 6 months ago) but I'm glad I did.
Sending positive energy
Thank you! 👍👍
You know they don't clean their gutters. Great job fixing the amount of dumb mistakes the installers did!
I watch a couple of guys out of Australia. They're like you. They have a hard time cleaning that corrugated pipe out in Australia. There's a lot of downspouts everybody has them. They don't want to run the water on their property. They got the plastic pipe. They got the clay pipe and he uses a jeter that's pushing out a lot more power than what you have and they have specialty heads on it. They they do it everyday but I can see where you don't want to do it. I don't blame you. That's a lot of time for nothing other than that. It turned out good. Enjoy!.👍👍🙂🇨🇦
I WILL keep that in mind! IYKYK
The word eloquent popped into my head about five minutes into this thing; as in “this is not an elegant solution”. This is a tough job man. It’s the pretty vs results Sophie’s choice decision. You solved that problem , good job , good work
Haha Allan, I said Elegant! This was neither, but it was effective. 👍
I really felt your pain on this one. It made me anxious just watching. I’m in the process of building a house. One of my first projects after it’s built will to give the roof runoff a path downhill, in schedule 40, of course.
You will be happy you did Jim. I see such disasters all the time where a little planning could have saved a lot.
@@GCFD yep, just recently we got hit with 8” of rain in a 10 hour period. Some friends of mine ended up with 5” of water in their very nicely finished basement because of poor drainage system design. I fixed it for them so they don’t have to worry about it in the future. Over $30,000.00 in damage, because the builder just didn’t care or didn’t understand how to do it correctly.
It made me anxious watching all that Customization against the edge of that garage, just waiting for the saws to come out to re-work the concrete driveway & walkway etc.
The roots growing over the corrugated is amusing.
Hi Shawn, one idea for you: maybe consider keeping a roofer's torch on hand in case you want to warm a 4" pipe and induce a slight bend in it. That could save you from having to use a fernco fitting just to make a slight turn and the result will be much stronger and smoother. If you heat PVC pipe enough you can actually get it to be floppy and bendy - just don't go too far. You might also be able to do this in a more controlled way with a heating blanket, but I haven't personally tried that method.
I learned from another CZcams drainage guy that if you install all corrugated pipe down in Florida then have yearly service contracts to clean the corrugated you can write off all your trips to Florida. Genius
Sean, you making video's such as this save people years of headaches and money......They see how corrugated pipe should never be used to remove rain water, only when used for a land drain and covered with a membrane that water can pass through but not dirt....or covered with gravel only......As I've said before, we only use corrugated pipe in the UK for land drains and to pass services through.
I was diggin' the gymno/angiosperm stuff.
I wondered if you would Crispr! I was all organismal and evolutionary and very little molecular or genetic.
What a mess. Hopefully he brings you back to do the job properly. That’ll be a great video.
👍
Sean, I loved the edit and you going to books to look stuff up.......Very interesting.
Corrugated pipe = Field Tile! I live in Iowa, the Capitol of Field Tile. 90+% of farmland here has some sort of clay. The other 10% has sand/organic material that plugs if not installed with a sock($$$$). Contractors trying to move roof water away from structures using corrugated pipe(field tile) are thieves.
You said it!
One things for certain, when Joe Shmoe homeowners who consume a lot of video content find a CZcamsr that they like, they will follow whatever that CZcamsr is saying. This job was done well but corrugated would have worked too in this application. The customer just never maintained it. I’ve installed both types of pipe. It’s all about the installation and maintenance. Those socks are a joke. You need a massive amount of stone to keep the soil from entering the perforated pipe, and optional fabric surrounding the stone. Solid corrugated pipe needs tape around the joints when the trench is back filled with soil. Either pipe will need convenient access points for cleanouts.
@@jamiepippin3892 great point Jamie. That’s exactly why I don’t just say these things but I actually show the pipes working like they were designed to. That’s the scientist in me checking results. Pvc is much more forgiving to installation and cleans itself out. It’s a far better choice even though it is more difficult to install. No one ever says, I regret installing pvc and should have used corrugated.
Man what a nightmare my friend. We all have those days....
Great work dude as usual. I’d be interested to know your backstory, how you got into the drainage game. What did you used to do ETC etc I think that would make a terrific video.
Came in to see corrugated get cleaned. Stayed to see pvc get installed.
A true landscapist and arborist
Nice job! Corrugated is trash I don’t know why some other CZcamsrs promote it. Appreciate the Sunday video!
Thank you David! 👍
I completely agree, I would urge all of your customers to swap it out for PVC, and I wouldn’t even try and service that stuff anymore. It’s absolute garbage. Great video keep up the good work.
Shawn, you might want to think about getting a Borescope camera, they have come down in price, in the last 10 years, and are pretty affordable now. Having one would help you greatly while pricing a job, as you can show the customer the clogs, before you even have to dig, and save you a lot of headaches.
You are much more patient than I am, for sure
It helps knowing I can share my pain with all of you Ry. I hope you enjoyed!
@@GCFD I did enjoy it!
Good job bud..Hard job too...
Nice to see Jeremy again. 👏 Good instincts, knowledge and some luck on this job. Is owner receptive to addressing tree litter and some version of gutter screen ?
In that line of work one of those cameras on a snake that you can run through the pipes (whatever they're called) would be a great tool, you probably have one by now I suppose.
Thanks for the vids i enjoy it and the best part is u film what your work dose when it rains.
Sorry but you might think about getting a heat gun to make custom angels.it’s just an thought.
Thanks again love the vids
✨Great vid 👍. With all said and done. As I've mentioned before in your vids. The gutters above should be the #1 first thing to look at..It's obvious the trees there caused the problem. People have to clean out gutters. Or put gutter guards on especially in a area with overhead trees ...Gutter shields would have prevented the clogs. That's years of neglect
Have you ever put some heat to PVC pipe to get some custom bends? This would of been perfect situation. Great done as usual
I see contractors STILL using corrugated in my area. It's very popular in multifamily on catch basin and gutter applications. And to make things worse they try to tie several gutters along with a series of catch basins. 🤦
I came across that garbage trying to unclog one once. After wasting half a day, I found out it had collapsed about 20 feet away from the catch basin. PVC and a full bubble is the ONLY way to go!
Wow, just wow 😲
Grrrr was that day Leslie
hello from the Netherlands .
thanks for the video Shawn .
Sincerely Hollandduck
I have become a believer in smooth PVC for drainage. I have a semi-french drain in the back of the house that leads to the street with corrugated. It does require some maintenance frequently and does not flow very much even if it has been freshly jetted.
Perhaps you could do a video on the type of PVC glue you use and pros and cons of different glues? I have had glue set up in the can after one use and others last almost a year. Some glues dont give me sufficient time to put the pieces together.
I am now considering corrugated PVC pipe, best of both worlds :smirk:
Oh, a rant on corrugated every two years is about right. Lolol. Cheers
Hahah! Cheers Laurie!
This is where you have to get one of those Jetter setups like Drain Addict uses!
Still you don't do cleanouts on these pipes as often as you tear them out for the better option so that investment is likely not worth it.
Great point J E. After this job I don’t want any more cleanouts!
@@GCFD I'd imagine! Those roots looked like a literal nightmare!
Call the Penetrator from the pond. Since he specializes in drains he has quite the jetter and setup. One of his videos he mentioned Gate City Foundations for their expertise in French drains.
As usual you work is first rate. The corrugated pipe I would not waste my time on it .
I don't remember if you had this as one of the benefits of corrugated pipe but you showed a very visible example of making fine organic soil. Of course it's stuck inside of a plastic pipe at that point and probably not usable by anything. But it's beautiful black soil after a couple of years.
Well dang. You have spoiled me with the finishing with it flowing in the rain. 😄
I know Scott. I almost trashed this video footage because I knew I didn't want to go back to that job...
@@GCFD nah man. It's okay. I still watched from start to finish. Never trash a video that long over something so trivial.
I hate it when things go south, but you love it. (that's a joke) I'm glad I'm retired.
For these tight, high consequence digs, look at hydro vac. This could have been dug in 10 minutes with few working words. The combo trucks also have some great jetters.
Good job. Pity no after shots but I guess its not always possible.
I was just so over this job I didn’t want to go back. I’ve been sitting on this footage for almost 8 months too.
@@GCFD The good thing about this video though is it really shows how right you are to use solid pipe.
What? No more corrugated pipe clean outs. Oh no, I used to imagine the curse words under your breath as you pulled out the old corrugated pipes. I’m going to miss that. The worst part was not looking back at this one at in the rain……Only joking. I love your work and work ethic. Keep up the good work. Cheers Steve
10:21 that's where Ollie would use the lance gun.
👍👍
I like how @appledrains just posted a video talking about how PVC pipe is difficult to work with and corrugated pipe is way better and then this video drops 😂
You did good cleaning the pipes, but for pipe cleaning from roots you need big boy jetter (at least 300bar, 20liter per minute).
I would never send water a neighbors yard, not when you have a creek you can send water to
Same. Here we sent to neighbors driveway.
My Man, Holy cow very short into this one & i felt the pain....What a mess Must have been one of those big 2 story 4000+ sq ft homes with Zero maint....at least you were able to work around not cutting the concrete again, chaulk this one up for the custom angle records....
Haha, dat catkin infobomb got dropped slighty unexpected 🤣
No matter what type of material is used, it must be installed properly and maintained regularly. With all the trees there, the gutters, downspouts, drainage pipes and surface drains should be cleaned more frequently than the average house and property. That corrugated system was old and parts were probably abused in areas where cement work was done. It was also no match for those roots. No doubt schedule 40 should be used under cement, through trees with the potential of growing large roots and under areas where motor vehicles drive.
But the ribs in the corrugated create turbulence and keep it clean!!!1! Corrugated is best!!!
Yep! Corrugated also breaks the second law of thermodynamics. Oh wait, that was a garden hose with pressurized water. The second law still holds.
@@GCFD laws are meant to be broken! Live free….
Yeah, unless they are asking to replace with PVC it is not worth your time to clean corrugated out. They probably asked a few people and they refused.
You said it Kennith. I just don’t want to risk it anymore.
