The Rise of the MOST UNDERRATED Program in College Football (Utah Football)

  • Utah seems to be everyone’s darkhorse pick for the college football playoffs. During the Rose Bowl last season they lost a heartbreaker against Ohio State. They return most of their production from last season and the Pac-12 looks to be wide open. The Utes have built their program up over the past two decades so I thought we should look at their rise and why they should be considered a college football playoff contender.

I’ve been a Utah fan all my life. When I was a kid, the school was mostly known for science programs. The football team was fair, it wasn’t typically anything amazing. But then they hired Urban Meyer, who wasn’t there for very long but all Utah has done since then for the past 18 years is build up its program. Utah is consistently physical; top teams avoid scheduling them due to their upset potential, and then the next week they’re tired because of the game against Utah. I’m happy for them because they have a lot more to play for then they used to. It used to be the game against BYU was half the season’s hype, so they’ve grown a lot.

Watching this at the end of the season, I have to say we actually exceeded my personal expectations this year. Our main problem was that we had way too many players on Defense graduate, and at Utah Defense is our bread and butter. But if we can have a solid quarterback next year (yes, that's a big if), and if we don't lose too many players to transfers or the NFL I can see a ton of potential for next season. Even this year the Defense finally matured and got back to a true Utah Defense. It's too bad that Florida game has to be the very first one. It usually takes us about 3 games to finally get our team together. But maybe Florida will also not be completely put together yet, and maybe playing at elevation in front of the MUSS and North Endzone will be enough for us to skate through that game. It's also rough that the Baylor game will be the second game of the season. At least Weber State should give us a moment of breathing room. It's a rough schedule. We get USC, Oregon, and Washington as well as Oregon State and UCLA - which at least this year is ALL of the top teams in the conference. Of course, being top in the PAC-12 is rarely consistent. Honestly, I think our best team is probably going to be 2024 or 2025 because all of those amazing red-shirt freshmen we saw this year will be seniors (assuming they don't leave early). But if we can survive our 2023 schedule we potentially have an extremely compelling strength of schedule next year and a very good argument for a Playoff spot if we can manage to go undefeated with perhaps even a shot if we have one loss depending on what happens in the rest of the country.

  • @nintendo8127

I am a huge Utes fan. I would actually have us ahead of USC… if we played USC at like Week 4.
With that being said, one thing you have to mention about last year Utes is that last season, we played for both Ty Jordan and Aaron Lowe. We retired the number 22, and the whole mantra was 22% better and 4th quarter moment of loudness (also, stupid that ESPN, ABC, and others never showed it).
The other big reason that we might not make the playoffs is a huge reason. Devin Lloyd was a beast, and we lose him. Covey is also gone, and we used him for a lot of things. He is a huge loss because Utah has a huge weakness at WR, and he was also our special teams player.
I do think we make a NY6 game (if we go at least 2-1 OOC), as our secondary and running game can get better, but passing is our weakness (not because of Rising), and we don’t have an Bradley Anae or Nate Orchard pass rusher type of guy, which is very important for our team. That last part was very telling against Ohio State in the Rose Bowl.
PS: I would love for Utah to play Wisconsin home-and-home. Not for Rose Bowl, though. It would be my dream to beat an Ohio State or Michigan team in the Rose Bowl. Beating you guys would be awesome as well, and you are a great program no doubt. But it isn’t the same as beating Ohio State in the Rose Bowl.

I think you would beat us both times. Our offensive line isn’t that good (which makes it more impressive that we have had great running games).

Utah would never be able to be a Georgia. California, Texas, and Florida are the three biggest states for top notch recruits but Louisiana, Georgia, and Ohio aren't far behind. Georgia has a ton of talent in it's own backyard while Utah doesn't. The state of Utah has some terrific recruits but doesn't have close to the same depth and the money involved for Georgia football just dwarfs what Utah can spend, especially with how bad the Pac-12 has been run. As a Sun Devil, with the exception of when they play us, I always cheer for them so it would be great to see them compete and win a national championship but I don't see it happen...but will happily eat my words if proven wrong.

It really makes you wonder where Utah would be if they were able to get some of the recruits that these powerhouse teams can get.

First, huge respect for Kyle. He does field teams, repeatedly, that far outplay their recruiting ranking. I do expect that the stars will align for Utah/Kyle and maybe it is next year. The problem: they simply need to recruit at a higher level. You can only coach-up so much and that is why the stars need to align. Still too much of a talent gap.
IMHO: Oregon was coached horribly last year, picked the wrong QB, and simply chose the most predictable and least effective play calling strategies possible. Add to that: Mario lost the locker room, and was working on his next job long before his announcement. He was not focusing on Oregon. Oregon is loaded with talent and, in my opinion, now has effective coaching staff.
So, the talent difference is significant. I watched Oregon's spring game, see the difference in player buy-in, see how they are recruiting, and saw live that what the coaches say they will do... it is actually happening. I also expect a learning curve. So, I admit, Oregon can have its own issues with all that talent.
In the end, if I were to wager my own money, Oregon should repeat as PAC-12 champions and should beat Utah next year. They may not. Kyle may also have that year where the stars align. Rising was a stud last year. The QB is the most important player on the field. No doubt, it could happen.
Can't wait to watch. Actual play on the field is all that matters.

The PAC has not been a good football conf. for the last decade. So, using the old "parity is why the conf. can't get into the playoffs" is wrong. That being said Utah is a solid program. Not sure who they have coming back though. If they can get past Florida (they suck but winning gives Utah east coast exposure) and SDSU (another solid program) the only other game that might be an issue for them is USC. With the new NIL/transfer protal teams like USC can get real good in one off-season. I don't think the marshmallow at UCLA can relate to kids and the fashionistas at Oregon don't like being hit so they are probably not anything for Utah to worry about.

    • @justinklinck6575

The SEC as a whole isn't quite the God tier conference that everyone makes it out to be though. There are generally 2 teams that are powerhouses every year, usually being Bama and Georgia. A few more who are pretty good. A team or two that has an amazing year, then falls back to mediocrity in the following season (like Florida, Auburn, and LSU) Then the rest are quite average, and around the same level as the other power 5 conferences. SEC definitely is the best conference, but everyone acts like the mediocre teams in it are so much better than every power 5 team outside the SEC. Bowl season has proven that to be quite false the last few seasons. Regardless of the handful of opt outs that everyone seems to use as an excuse when their team loses in bowl games. Having opt outs actually reflects on how good the football programs and coaching really are... if the next men up are complete clowns, then that just shows that the program isnt as strong as the 4-5 star starting players make the programs look. Lol
