Tarantulas!! Traveling and Camping In NE Arizona Before The Fires

- We made it into a small portion of N.E. Arizona to do a little exploring and got to see how incredibly dry it was before the wildfires started up this summer. We almost never have a camp fire anyway because we don't like going around smelling like smoke, but as dry as everything was it was a disaster waiting to happen.

Getting out on the road is what Linda and I love to do with our converted cargo trailer camper. We're part time nomads and the nomadic lifestyle suits us to a Tee. Whether your RV is a camper van, camp trailer, travel trailer, motorhome or just a car and a tent, there's going to be something interesting for you in the videos we produce. Back roads and overlanding are part of what we do while exploring the western states for beautiful, peaceful and sometimes remote places to camp on BLM and National Forest land (public land). Taking care of ourselves as much as possible and doing our own repairs is a must because we travel on a fixed income and a limited budget. If your into being off-grid and boondocking, or doing dispersed camping whenever possible then you'll appreciate the discussions on batteries, solar panels and solar chargers or power stations and 12v refrigeration. Come on along, we're happy to have your company!

Thank You for doing your part to keep our forest clean ....again Thanks....t
Five months after ordering it, my 6 x 10 cargo trailer arrived. Using info I picked up from your videos, I decided to have the manufacturer insulate, wire, install windows, install a venting system, and finish the ceiling. My planned minimalistic interior build-out I’ll do. I’m pulling it with my RAV4 Hybrid so I have to keep the total weight around 1700 pound or less, but I get to use my tow vehicle as my bedroom. The heat and a/c run off the hybrid battery, then as needed, the gas engine cycles on and off to keep it charged. I removed the back seat and installed a 2000 watt pure sine inverter, then designed & had built an all aluminum bed frame. I topped that with a full size pure latex mattress and we’re doing the most comfortable camping of our life! Thanks for all your tips & uploads!
Wow Doug! You've brought up things that aren't too well known about using a hybrid, having ac and a large power source to go with it. Very nice and it sounds to me like you'll be traveling in style.
@@gonagain Hi! I’ve tent camped or roughed it with just a sleeping bag in the past. But I’m turning 71 in two months and I’ve decided that while I still love traveling & camping, I want more creature comforts! You two have been an inspiration. Thanks again.
So glad you included the part about cleaning up other people's trash! Every little bit helps. Especially if everyone does it!
You're right about that, Ang.
Back in the day we had chief Iron Eyes Cody crying as he saw the trash strewn along the roads of America and I still recall how much of an impact that had on me and still does to this day! Make no apology for being a good steward of the land! Thank You....
Thanks Mark.
I travel the 40 but never get off the beaten path. Flagstaff great for winter fun, sledding with the kids.
I love the desert, especially Arizona. I had a bad experience in the California desert...called 29 Palms MCB.
Oh. Yeah, I could see how that could happen. Thank you for your service! And I mean that wholeheartedly.
I love the 29 Palms CA area.
Hate the Ashfork AZ area. Lots of theives. Had a truck, 5th wheel, Vintage Class A & Class C stolen. Sooo back to the stumps surrounded by lots of BLM land & Joshua Tree Natl Park.
Semper Fi
The bark takes on an alligator look after a fire.
Thank You beautiful country
I enjoyed the video and the tarantula mating story . That tree is a show of determination to live .
We don’t miss a single Gonagain video!
I love the desert too and I love forests too and .. 😂. And that's the only way to travel.. in a general direction! I never knew that is how tarantulas hide!!!
We didn't know they were in all those holes either and were surprised. We had been seeing the holes for days! We saw a dually with an Arctic Fox camper on the back yesterday and thought of you.
You reached into my old stomping grounds on this one. Lived in Show Low as a youngster. Was born in Holbrook, not far from there. Lots of petroglyphs on the canyon walls around Woodruff which is an extinct volcano out on the 77 between Holbrook and Show Low. Did you see the little green men in Heber??? In Williams, there is the Planes of Fame East museum, but I believe it is temporarily closed. We missed each other by about a week. I was in that area on May 19th/20th.
Hi Nate! Rick told me you were from that area while we were driving through. How did you end up in MT?
@@gonagain My Dad got smart and moved us to Montana in April of 1974.
@@NateWilburn1 Nate, if you have not seen show low since the 70s you would be amazed at the changes. I lived there from 2011 til 2018. Great place, but I understand it has changed dramatically in only the past few years. I still miss the white mountains…every day…
@@hgj2019 I have been back a few times over the years. the last few times were in 1999 and in May of this year. You are correct. It has changed tremendously.
@@NateWilburn1 the friends I had there who were long time residents told me how it was in the past. A guess the progress has been good and bad though, at least from what they told me.
Every little bit of cleanup helps thank you.
I grew up in Pinedale I went to Show Low High School in Show Low Arizona
There are a LOT of people in rural AZ who do not have running water, also many who have water not so good to drink. Being able to access good drinking water is critical. The problem is so significant in AZ that the state officially allows water trailers to be legally operated without any sort of license plate.
So many beautiful places in the AZ mountains. Sad that so much of it is being marred by fire.
The tarantulas are really kinda cool. We would see migrations like what you described across roads. Hard to avoid running them over.
That dust, when it gets wet, is the most incredibly sticky, slippery mud you can imagine. Like grease on glass.
Thanks for the info H Gj. In Montana we call that kind of mud "gumbo" and it loads up your wheelwells until you can no longer drive.
@@gonagain if you ever get down to the AZ white mountains again check out “Western Drug” in Springerville. I think you and Linda would enjoy there very comprehensive selection.
While in West Texas I was heading to my hotel room thru the back door and a Tarantula was guarding the way on the sidewalk- I moved it to the side with my foot--- and the fight was on lol my saving grace was to outrun it to the door-- another great video!
That's a funny story, thanks Tim! A guard tarantula...
Agreed on the NE AZ mosquitoes. There were a few places in the white mountains with VICIOUS mosquitoes that seemed to be almost as big as houseflies. I’ve had them bite me through denim jeans!
Yeah, AZ mosquitoes are the worst I've ever run into! And we spent years in Hawaii and also in Alaska.
Thanks guys. Nice video.
Thank you glen! See you on the next one!
Yeah you showed them enough of Arizona we need to keep the other parts a secret. Pretty much anywhere in the west you go on memorial weekend it’s going to be crowded. Thanks for cleaning up unfortunately more people are are leaving a mess than are cleaning up and the forest service is slowly closing down areas due to the nomads trashing them. 👊👍😎
Tarantulas are amazing little critters! The migrations in the fall are fun.
That must have been what we witnessed that day on the highway. Unreal.
@@gonagain you should watch a male approach a female. He will stop at the entrance to her burrow and knock politely. If he is not polite enough, or not attractive enough, he will wind up as dinner! Just fascinating!
Thank you.
I hate spiders and mosquitoes! The mosquitoes have been awful this year. I was outdoors the other day just for a bit the other day - I came in with over 20 bites! As for cleaning up other people’s trash - we always carried an extra trash bag for our trash and every trash we ran across. Nothing worse than being in wonderful places and seeing trash. Enjoyed the video! 🤓
Thank you, Mia. It seems that Linda is now a mosquito magnet and I'm not. When we lived in Hawaii it was the other way around.
We in Az, keep that area a secret!
Sssshhhh! It's beautiful, for sure!
Next time you're close Peyson, go to Diamond Point. Lots of camping off the road to the top, but you must go on up to the point. Un obstructed view of Peyson. Beautiful...
Thanks John.
Hello Rick and Linda. Once Again, Nice Nice and NICE Footage. I Love AZ. and actually spend More time here than any other place. The locations you shared are So Soothing. I love the Aroma the of the Forest. Also, that Fantastic Sound of the wind blowing through the tall trees. Thank You for the Info on the 'paths less traveled' with this video. About ten years back, I lived in Prescott almost a half year. Absolutely Wonderful. But it was kinda hard in the winter months. Prescott is actually 2-Feet Higher than Denver. (think Mon tana) Either way Az. Has it All. I Can't get Enough of 'The Arid Zone'. God Bless. Be Safe. ✌ (it Rained in So.Ut., No.Az. for the last Two Nights. Almost Hard to Believe) 🥴⚡☔
I stayed in Prescott for a month once and it was in the teens at night and mid 80s during the day, but I loved Arizona after that because of it's beauty and continued to visit.
@@gonagain Hi Rick. Ya, I have to add that Prescott has such a unique flavor. Lots of Money People, and a Large Low-End (Prescott Valley, Chino Valley, Paulden) but even now places are getting cleaned up. 'Jerome' is a Cool little town somewhat near Sedona, but it has its own Special History. I Really liked the locations you shared in your video. More & more places to explore.👌 BTW, after complaining about my mini AC's, they gave a 30% Rebate, plus they have been shipped & should arrive tomorrow. That Means, I'll be 'Out On the Canyon' in a matter of weeks. Very Excited about that. Say hello to linda for me. THX 🌝
hello rick and linda, i little word or the wise, if you can place your solar panels om top of you tahoe, the reflection from the top of your truck to the solar panel makes he solar panel stay at 100 percent power. i didnt believe it from someone telling me the same thing, but its true. . on the ground the solar panel works about 65 to 75 power where as the top of the truck is 95 to 100 percent. its the reflection that helps out.
That does help. Last winter I reviewed the Bluetti SP120watt panel and had it set up in the snow. The cold temperature and the reflected snow had it up over 120 watts!
Great spot! I love those remote campsites.
woot, in my backyard!
The dusty dirt seems to be universal above 5,000 feet, like sifter flour.
One of the main reasons I’m attaching porches on both sides of Taj-Ma-Haul!
Great name for your trailer!
I have to tell you, I've lived my over 60 years of life on the West side of Washington. I can really appreciate when I can look through the ground level of trees...and see. You really nailed that one. But for cover, it's a good thing.
Great video. Thx.
Spending my teen years in Bellevue, I always went to the east side of the Cascades to do my camping and hiking. I miss those huge blackberries though.
A friend of mine just started living the #vanlife. He traveled from NC to Arizona, and is now in Flagstaff. I shared this video with him, and think you'll have a new subscriber, as well as a Like on your Facebook page. You know I love your stuff, and you and Linda! Thanks for the great content you two!❤👣
Thank you Kristi, that was very nice of you.
Loved the scenery it was beautiful thank you ....
But the 🕷...💩 NO!!!🤣
❤ you guy's...keep the videos coming😉
You did a great job on your camp kitchen. It looks good and very functional
Awesome Linda, the younger people don't know about the 4 wheel dune buggies back in the day. I laughed when u said dune buggies, as I do. I can never remember what there callg all the diff 4 wheelers, so dune buggy just auto pops out(*_*)!
Aloha🌺
Good Video Rick ! I like those rocks in your opening introduction! We have to get stones underground or buy them mostly. Mostly limestone under ground. Tarantula are large. We have black widow, red widow , brown widow, large huge wolf spiders !!! Most scary is brown recluse. Don’t see daily thank goodness 😅. Thanks
I sure like your style of travel and video production. Inspiring! Thank you, Chris
Thanks Chris!
I was pleasantly surprised in Walmart the other day. They have 5 gallons of purified water in water containers in the front of the store. These are $14.99 and include the water and bottle. You can buy a manual pump for $8 that goes on top. I think it would be good for drinking water storage or to take on your trips. You can refill them with purified water for .29 a gallon. I thought of y’all when I saw it. Thanks for the video!!
We refill our own jugs in Walmart frequently and the water is always good. You can do that if you like.
I've been everywhere and have seen so many things, including a Gila Monster, but I have never come across a tarantula. Thank you!
I was so excited the first time I saw a horned toad (this is Linda)! I have yet to see a gila monster tho.
@@gonagain - hi, Linda. I saw the Gila Monster in late April or early May just outside of Organ Pipe National Monument. It was crossing the road around 6 or 7 AM and I picked it up and moved it to a safer area away from the road. I hope you see one some day! Thank you for the videos, you are an inspirational couple. ❤️
My brother lives in Arizona in a town called Fountian Hills. In 1995 he gave me one of his kidneys, here it is 26 years later and it’s never missed a beat.
He. built a home in Overguard on an airport.
He would spend the summers up there but he’s 81 now an decided to sell it, to much hassle moving back and fourth.
Your brother sounds like quite the guy.
@@gonagain Yes he is I did not need to ask for the kidney. When he found out I was in need he called me. He’s also an airplane guy he flew C124’s as the mechanic for the USAF.
Thanks
Nice scenery! Personally, I prefer to shop at the local stores when traveling, not a major retailer. Doing so gives me a sense of the local people and community, and I like to spend a little money with folks who probably don’t make much of a profit. Those locally owned stores might have announcements on their bulletin boards about upcoming events, which could be worth attending. But then, I love small town America! Thanks for another great story. (Tarantula migrations remind me of the Mormon crickets of Northern Nevada - double yuck!)
I agree with you about buying local !!
We mostly buy from the small town stores since that's where we are when needing supplies. They each have their own charm and that's where you can learn some of the locals favorite spots for camping.
@@gonagain Did you hike in to see the petroglyphs just north of Ashfork. Abt the only thing decent in that area & yep theives have gotton to them too.
Another good video. We like seeing the landscape and what you both find.
See ya round……
Good video. I especially like that you show where you are traveling on the map. It is realy helpful to get oriented that way.
Flies 😱
Another good video, can't wait for the next one! Blessings
Thank you, Granni Anni.
Ariz is nice. Place to camp thank you for the nice video
So sorry I am so late on viewing this but between no power or no net and phone that doesn't have good service I just couldn't watch it. I am hoping I can get the rest of the video's watched before the storms get here they are on their way. Also my two Bluetti's AC200's have paid for themselves in the last 4 days I've had to charge them with my big Generator but they run all night and I get two nights out of them before needing to recharge. I did a lot of camping in AZ when I was in the army it was all in a sleeping bag we had a good time and saw some really nice stuff. Back then we didn't see a lot of people at all maybe 3 or 4 people in a week but we were on back trails 99% of the time. We hope that your tomorrow is better than your today was.
That's some serious weather you're getting! We get serious cold here but usually don't get violent weather like you are. It's great you have those two AC200's though to get you through that. I hope you're not getting damages from the wind and hail.
Great video, I live in the Snowflake area. Lots of places to camp within a few miles of here. You are correct about people coming up from the Phoenix area on the weekend. Also the tree you were filming was s alligator juniper.
Thanks for the name of the tree!! Much appreciated.
Hello, I love listening to you talk about my home state, AZ. When you were south of Flagstaff and showed us that big tree; that is an aAlligator
Alligator Juniper and they get HUGE. That bark is very distinctive and that tree is much sought after as firewood because it burns very hot. It is protected on all public lands and can only be harvested when it is dead and down.
Another time to see the road covered in tarantulas is during a heavy rain when their homes get flooded. They all know which direction to travel.
Thanks for sharing about the trees and tarantulas Leslie, it's nice to have some details filled in.
Thanks for the info, trailblazer !
Thanks for "Heads Up" ... I've been in that area a few times never knew I was pounding around Tarantulas ... always found the people in Williams Arizona really helpful and friendly except for one guy ... Flagstaff is a big College Town so sometimes the campers are young and unruly ... have stopped in that area on the way down to Sedona which is about 80 miles away I beleive ... Walnut Creek 17 miles south of Sedona is nice place for hiking and biking ...
Thanks for the tips, Richard.
@@gonagain Don't want to be that guy that knows everything ... but I figure you want keep your channel active ...more comments are good I hear ..
That tree looks like an alligator juniper
Alligator juniper tree, I believe.
Thanks for the name of the tree. Very cool tree!
Very good informative content. Thanks for sharing.
Great video love Arizona live there in the Winter time safe travels
Like your stove set up… neat
Beautiful scenery thanks for your time making the videos, stay safe and healthy.
I was in Williams, Az two weeks ago. I love that area. I was planning on Sedona but didn’t want to get in the fire area
Great video. We were south of Payson for a week in March, very nice area and temps.
I had to ride my Harley through thick Tarantulas on the road !
So you've seen them too!
6:14 yeah, I can see his light colored knees
Lovely place! Will definitely be checking the area. We have family that recently moved near Show Low so will be in that area often. Thanks for sharing!🙂
That's a nice area.
Some of the best video on line.
Always a pleasure.
Looks about like where we stayed when we rented a van the first time (we came home and immediately bought one of our own 😀.) You two should take the drive up to Gila Cliff Dwellings some time, check your brakes first though. Have a great weekend guys!
Thanks for the suggestion, Alison!
Hope to see you and Linda on the road soon...be safe out there and enjoy!
I find you and your spouses adventures very interesting.
Y’all’s positive attitude is wonderful. Enjoy your life. 🇱🇷
Thanks so much!
Nice video I liked the map part at the end
We love our iceco. We spent a month in Az with it running as a freezer. Work flawless. We run goal zero 500x. Also try Dragoon Mountain north of Tombstone.
We stayed on the south side of Dragoon last year but it was spitting snow so we headed back down lower, as in "Quartzsite". We didn't leave Montana to get snowed on in AZ!
Rick, always love your traveling vids. Love the the Mogollon rim area near Heber and Showlow. Especially the drive toward Globe from Showlow through Salt Canyon/river. Thanks for all the dispersed camping tips, too. Yeah, you hit one of the most busy times of year for the Phoenix escapees! Happy travels.
Great scenery and always great content with lots of useful info. Thats why I am a subscriber ! Thanks and God Bless.
Said it for me! Thanks!🤗
Thanks for the sub!
Living the dream. Thanks for sharing.
You bet! Thanks for watching, C Davis.
Nice gimble keeps the grease level in the pan !
Thanks much for another great share and Video! Amazing as I did know how a tarantula was native to AZ :) I can say, I have actually been there in that area! :) I guess its the trees that I like, as you mentioned, spoiled by the forests in western WA.. All the BEST to both of and family! Cheers :)
Thank you Marty!
Sometimes the best laid plans are no plans at all. Thanks for sharing what’s working for you guys and what’s not
It's definitely more relaxed that way.
Those are certainly beautiful areas, and the info on the tarantulas was good, tho being from W. Tx we know about them. Funny to watch a dog that hasn't encountered them before, stick their nose into the hole, and the spider jumps on them... does no harm, but I would have jumped too. On the map, you kinda inferred you might make it into NM. NM is a beautiful area to boon dock. We go frequently since it's the closest area to us. Love your videos & information, that's why I am a "bell ringer".
We did enjoy our time in NM and visited the Aztec Ruins while we were there. Thanks for being a bell ringer!!!
Thx for the vid
Thanks for watching William!
Good job on the campsite clean up!
Thank you!
Thanks for the info on that area, I haven't had a chance to visit there yet. As usual, loved the video!
Thanks SUV6, we'll be heading to that area to see more in the future.
Great video. I like the Rim Road 300 off of 87 north of Payson lots of side roads I find lots of camping with no people even on the 4th of July.
Maybe we'll try that road next time. Thanks Bob, appreciate the tip.
We travel just about the same way. Six Saturdays and a Sunday makes for a very flexible schedule 🙂.
Enjoy your videos!
Be aware....
You sure get up early to put these videos on CZcams. Thanks for the great videos. Maybe run into you sometime. We travel Arizona too.
If you see us, be sure to say hello!
Linda needs to be heard more ,Like this 😁
I understand, but she's the strong, silent type. I'll encourage her.
Fabulous scenery and camping locations. Regards from the Solent Coast U.K. AJ
You must have a natural ability for finding all of those good camping spots. Also you do what most people want. Take the time and effort to find them. As much as you camp you know what works and what you should of left at the house. Have you ever made a video on what you take on your camping trips that is a must to take and never go without it. That would be good for the ones starting out. Carry on my friend, you and Linda see what’s over the next hill and stay safe.
Thanks for the kind words and the video suggestion, wr bruce. Might just do that.
Rick, with all of your camping knowledge, tricks and skills you mean to you don’t know how to check the fuel level in a propane tank? You just pour hot water over it, the empty part will get warm and the part from the fuel level down will be cold . Kudos on leaving it better than you found it. 👍
Yeah Taco, I know that one, but I had to do that routine often and it got old. Then we'd be heading for higher elevations and I'd get it topped off just in case. This new set-up is just easier and I don't have to mess with it. Thanks for saying that though for others who may not know that trick.
@@gonagain I figured you knew the the trick. For a determined stay or destination a couple times a year one tank is fine but for the traveling you do two is the only way to go.
I really enjoyed video as usual..... and hello from wy. Lol
Wyoming is a favorite destination for us because we feel so at home there. Not to mention it's beautiful!
"Absolutely love your videos" ..very informative info presented by a very pleasant & articulate husband & wife team.
Glad you like them!
I enjoyed this video, as usual! Always beautiful landscapes! Although I am phobic about bugs (not a good thing for an outdoors girl I know) and especially spiders, I thought your information, highlighting the spiders hole, etc, was good. I sure wouldn't want to step on that hole!! 😁😳 Thanks you two! 💗
Mosquitos really Bug me. ( lol )
Nice camping setup you've got.

I hope you guys are doing well there JT!
@@gonagain
Doing great Rick. How are you guys?
You sure find some nice places.
Not always, but we try. Thanks Leroy!
I've never seen a tarantula before! I'm guessing I'd be a mix of terrified and intrigued lol.
There were lots of them, but they just stayed in their holes, thank goodness!
Jim you all should do some camp cooking video's.
Linda show us some of the meals you make in camp.
We own a couple acres not too far from where yall were. Nice area of the country for sure!
I wouldn't mind having a "base" around there myself.
I was thinking about your Generator. Two things might be caucing this to happen. The 18650 cell pack in the generator has a high temperture prob in it to shut off if they get to hot. This could be happening if you charge to fast with to many volts, causing the cells to over heat. The other would be if it gets to hot where it is used. Of course it could be both, this is a safty feature of the generator so the 18650 cells don't catch on fire.
P.S. This is done through the BMS
Good information, Chris, and food for thought. Thank you for that! I was running a 200 watt panel into it and it was in the 90s. They did send me out a new unit, but I haven't tried it yet.
we have a four thousand acre forest about fifteen minutes from us. but the best camp ground I found . A diamond in the rough a place called turkey byou. it just beautifu when it got dark lying in a tent with no fly the heaven was beautiful we are in Ill. the tax state.
That sounds like a nice little piece of paradise.
Interesting video Rick. Used to spend some time in southern New Mexico around the oil fields. Any moisture, be it heavy dew or rain, would bring the tarantulas out of their holes. Some were the size of coffee saucers.
That would be interesting because there were a LOT of those holes!
They do have gages for propane bottles. I have one on a 40 pounder.
Good morning, Rick&Linda! I have a suggestion for both of you. That is if you haven’t done so already. How about starting a gallery wall of your travels in some part of your home? What reminded me was that magnificent cedar that you found on this trip. What a beautiful sculptural picture that would make and that you could enjoy while you’re “stuck at home” lol. Anyway, it was just a thought.i really enjoy your videos of the west. I truly miss my old stomping grounds. 😊
That alligator cedar was certainly photogenic! Our only display is a large wall map of the US with our road trips drawn in. The west side is almost completely covered, but we haven't ventured east of the Mississippi yet.
👍👍
You sir are the Mr. Rogers of CZcams!👍
Hope we can be your neighbor one day!✌🏻
What a nice thing to say, thanks Robert.
YOU WOULD THINK TOWNS IN ARIZONA WOULD HAVE WATER FILL STATIONS FOR THE RURAL FOLKS THAT HAUL THEIR OWN WATER. GREAT FALLS HAS THREE WATER FILL STATIONS THAT IS CITY WATER AND IS 25 CENTS FOR 75 GALLONS.
In AZ I did see water fill stations for larger mobile tanks, but I'm not sure of the price. We're fortunate here to have plenty of good water!
