- Sometimes towing a trailer can have it's exciting moments and we've had our share of ours! Glare ice, blinding snow, high winds to name just a few, but some situations can be made better through better driving skills and a degree of professionalism and that's what this video is about, being safer on the road while towing a travel trailer. Tune in and check your skills!
Getting out on the road is what Linda and I love to do with our converted cargo trailer camper. We're part time nomads and the nomadic lifestyle suits us to a Tee. Whether your RV is a camper van, camp trailer, travel trailer, motorhome or just a car and a tent, there's going to be something interesting for you in the videos we produce. Back roads and overlanding are part of what we do while exploring the western states for beautiful, peaceful and sometimes remote places to camp on BLM and National Forest land (public land). Taking care of ourselves as much as possible and doing our own repairs is a must because we travel on a fixed income and a limited budget. If your into being off-grid and boondocking, or doing dispersed camping whenever possible then you'll appreciate the discussions on batteries, solar panels and solar chargers or power stations and 12v refrigeration. Come on along, we're happy to have your company!

If everyone towed like you ,what a wonderful highway it would be! Thanks
Your old-school philosophy is spot on. Especially letting truckers pass you. Your experiences are priceless. I appreciate your work!
I appreciate that, PLC17.
I've observed other drivers apply the accelerator as soon as I indicate my intention to pass by activating my turn signal. This behavior reminds me of kindergarten. Thank you for offering your safe and prudent advice on towing and consideration of others towing.
I hate it when I'm passing in the left lane, and somebody passes me in the the right lane shoots the gap, and causes me to jam the brakes to avoid a collision. I call them hot heads.
So you've noticed that too. Strange behavior for sure.
That's good advice about leaving room to let folks pass, i also slow down when a big rig is passing me, it makes a huge difference in the less time ot takes for them to pass
Thank you🙂
As always I genuinely appreciate the wisdom of someone who has seen much. Blessings to you both🙏
Thanks Tom!
I really enjoy these “talks”. Thank you for taking the time to share your wisdom and thoughts.
Thanks for watching, Kyle!
Thanks for the common sense trailer towing information. I learned towing the common sense way growing up towing vehicles.
Many people, no fault of their own, buy a trailer in adult years and have never towed anything. They don’t know towing etiquette and safety because no one has ever taught them.
Thank you for being a teacher and a teacher who is talented at sharing his wisdom and knowledge.
This is one of the best videos you have made. You covered so much that I needed to know. Thanks for sharing!
You're welcome George. I need to get out somewhere and dust off that detector.
You are completely correct!!! I never go over 60 mph towing my Casita. It does tow very good. I don’t know why people drive so fast period ! 🤷🏼♂️ Thanks for sharing.
Nice trailer!
They haven't been properly potty trained :)
Something 🤷🏼♂️
I get the pleasure of occasionally towing around the D.C. Beltway. Never have a problem being passed there.
When the highways like a weekend boat launch lol. Enjoyed, God bless!!
Always feels like my dad is talking to me! Love following yours and Linda’s adventures. You pull off some feats of civil engineering!
Always learn something. Thank you.
We thank you for watching!
Rick & Linda I continue to be astonished by the common sense content of your videos and lessons learned and shared. This video had some really important points, so thank you again for sharing and educating.
Thanks Ken.
I really enjoyed this video. Great information. Thank you and stay safe.
Very thoughtful driving. I wish more people applied these common sense standards. Great job RIck.
Hah well said "ALL OF IT" The part about vehicle size vs trailer size is so true today. The RV sales lots sell way to big of trailers for most tow rigs today. A Jeep liberty is not SAFE towing a 22 foot travel trailer regardless if the weights fall within the limits, It's the tail wagging the Dog , and we see it often .. Great info Thanks for posting.
Yr a smart sensible driver, i drove flatbed big rig 48 states for 9 yrs! I'm more cautious now retired towing my 16 ft home built camper, stay safe!👍
With more and more people taking to the roads in these uncertain times, this kind of knowledge becomes ever more important.
We all need to slow down a bit, if only to catch our breath and take in the world around us...safely of course!
Hello Woods! Nice to hear from you.
What exactly does these uncertain times mean ? 🤷🏼♂️When did the guarantees start .
Thanks for sharing your experiences and suggestions. Very informative and educational. Take care of yourselves around that smoke
Masks are good for more than just COVID.
You cover a lot of my pet peaces but such is life. I have found that timing is very important. I try to hit congested areas at low traffic times. Some places I avoid like the plague. Since I'm retired and not on a schedule, I adjust my speed to stay in the power band of the engine and let people pass. I've had two blown tires on my RV and one on my tow dolly. Now I run new tires as much as possible.
Sounds to me like you're doing it right. I replace my single axle tires when they're about half worn, just for safty's sake.
I drive just like you do with about the same rig. Works for me.
THANK YOU!!! Retired Truck Driver here, I agree with everything you’ve said and really appreciate it!
Now pulling a 7x14 dual axle cargo trailer conversion, see ya down the road!
Thanks for informing the public! I wish this info was mandatory to get a license, as a professional truck driver who tows up to 80,000lbs across the lower 48, you won’t believe the stuff I’ve seen going down the highway. You are spot on with all your advice. Just last week in California I saw a Corvette towing a 16ft travel trailer! People are crazy 😜
Another awesome video from Linda and Rick. I’m so glad I found your channel. If only everyone had the wisdom, knowledge, common sense, and genuine caring attitude that you guys have. What a wonderful world that would be. Love your videos! Thank you!
Much needed info that first time towers should all be aware of. Always amazes me how many swaying trailers I see (at speed) and how few people have any idea about tongue weight.
I see that too and hope they don't learn the hard way.
One of your very best videos yet!
Wife and I tow 30 ft Flagstaff of about 7900 lbs with F150 Super Crew cab . 3.5 ltr ecoboost v6 and 10 speed.
This transmission and engine combo are incredible. The software in tow mode adapts quickly to every towing load. Also when in tow/ haul mode applies engine braking too ( though with low compression v6 not a lot of engine braking is posdible).
Not only is it courteous to pull over and let cars pass but made be the law of the land.
Here in WI I believe it is required if there are 5 or more vehicles behind you if you can safely pull over. I frequenlty do.
Rarely enforced and severely abused by many farmers here.
We have a 6x12 cargo trailer too. Much easier to tow but not much better on fuel. Wind drag is almost as much on cargo as travel trailer.
You commented on the tire/ speed issue but i think it needs more emphasis.
ST Chinese tire are usually only rated to 65 under ideal conditions: 70 degrees outside/.
Smooth pavement.
Proper loading of weight.
Time in service. Less than 5 to 10 years.
Great video! Thanks again.
We found your channel about a year ago when we decided that going the cargo trailer route to camping was the way to go. Today's video was greatly informative. Everyone towing should watch it. Especially liked the information on gas mileage. It's 55 from now on for us.
Make the journey as important as the destination.
There is a simple solution for monitoring mileage. Buy a Bluetooth adapter that plugs into the OBD port. Get Torque app for phone or tablet, then you can see all the OBD information as you drive. You can see the MPG realtime and can adjust throttle to meet your needs. Before high tech, we did essentially the same thing with a intake manifold vacuum gauge.
As a retired trucker, I absolutely understand!🎯🎯🎯🎯🎯🎯🎯🎯
At 12:40 while he was talking the guy in the back ground just did a face plant behind him. LOL
❤️ My brother was a highway patrolman...
You SO remind me of him in so many ways.
Thanks for all you do ❤️
We appreciate you watching!
Really appreciate these videos Rick. Your commonsense discussion on passing etiquette was excellent. The number of drivers out there with no sense of these protocols is troubling. My favorite pet peeve that I don't think you mentioned: Someone passing, then SLOWING DOWN once they are in front of you! Keep up the great work.
Thanks 👍, Howard. That is a very annoying situation for me too.
Thanks for sharing this video, good thoughts and interesting video. This a good one. Have a great day folks.
Thank you, Mark!
i just got a smaller older camp trailer. i don't plan on winning any races with it behind me. the advice you give is right on point. being retired i don't have any need to hurry. and my truck also gets better fuel economy at slower speeds as well.
Wow! What a lot of useful information. I wish all the reclass people on the road would watch this also. Thanks and keep um coming.
I agree Rick thanks. Tow Haul mode not only increases line pressure but prevents converter lock up effecting fuel economy. Great job changing those solenoids by the way. Safe travels Perry
Thanks Perry!
Rick and Linda, thanks for the wonderful, useful information. Idaho is my home state. Keep safe.
We love Idaho!
Yes, I always gain something from your videos... Thank you!!
Thank you for watching, Don.
This guy always talks wisdom, great video.
Thanks, Ron.
Great info! I even slow down when someone passes me and I'm NOT towing. My truck likes to cruise comfortably at 70 on the freeway. I think ppl forget the posted speed limit is exactly what it says.... Speed LIMIT. Not a requirement. Also, there's a minimum speed and so if you can safely tow between those two, you're good. Except on some hills. Those suck. Lol.
We all need to get out on the road again soon.
🐘 in the room. Finally thoughtfully analyzed .Often times we'll pull over on a wide shoulder well before we hit a traffic light.. I say let them pass we'll catch up to them at the next set of lights or drive by them as they pull into the gas station😉...slow but not to slow steady and considerate 🎥🤙🇨🇦👋
Good info. Loved the video. Most folks that need this wisdom dont care about being courteous on the road.
As always another great video!
Thank you for sharing
Thank you Rick for sharing valuable info. I did not rent from U-Haul because their smaller trailers clearly stated SPEED LIMIT 55. I knew I would be driving faster than that on the highways from Texas to Florida. I had no idea the tires could have a speed limit as well. And yes-thank you-no one gains anything from hugging someone's bumper 👍 Hey Linda 🙋
This last trip, down near Jackpot, NV, I had someone get on my bumper and stay there even as I pulled over to let them go by until I was almost stopped. They must have been determined to "slip stream" no matter what!
@@gonagain How terrifying! I have had to flip my rearview mirror so I could stop looking into their eyes. I said a prayer & decided I had control of where my car was going-if they hit me 🤷
Wonderful and informative video. Good on you!
Good advice with a lot of common sense.
Those rules of the road are even more important today as many Big Rig drivers are new to the job.
That's right, Michael.
Yes, I gained a lot of new knowledge, things I didn't already know or would have never thought of.
Glad to hear that. It's just things that I'm thinking about as I'm towing.
All the towing advice is good for any country. Regards from U.K. AJ
What a great video. So appropriate for a lot of us. I have a 6x12 V Nose and thus far I can't even tell I have a trailer behind me. But, you guys know your stuff for sure and you go everywhere under all conditions. I salute you and Linda.
Thank you, Drill Sergeant sir!
Always good to get information from you. Thanks
I recently saw 5 large campers 5th wheels going down the Interstate and I was not driving slow, they blew by me like I was standing still. A Coach bus drive channel I watch just put out a video and talked about the bus is governed at 70 so when they have the cruise set at 70 and come beside a car that suddenly accelerates to keep the bus behind them and then in a short distance rinse and repeat. Some drivers are in a zone and have no idea what is going on around them or are spiteful and looking to cause problems for others. Stay safe and healthy!!
Hello Badger Pa! I think a lot of folks pulling large trailers don't stop to think about the fact that, just because they have to power to go fast, they still need to be able to stop in an emergency. They need to try applying the brakes HARD when they're doing 70...
@@gonagain I was going 75, they were racing.
Thanks for your experiences. I learn things from this channel that I had never thought of.
Good to hear that! Thank you.
AGAIN... YOU ROCKED IT!
I agree 100% with you Rick on letting those big rigs pass, I take my foot off the gas, better to let them pass in case one of their tires blows
I don't know why it didn't occur to me that shifting an automatic transmission out of overdrive would reduce the frequent shifting. Thanks for the advice, Rick.
Hi guys; for your throat; get some Ricola break it up and pour in hot water. You can add honey and lemon if you like. In some places, you can find Ricola tea. I use it all the time when I sing.
Some people just have no clue, your tips are very helpful. I drove with a friend delivering some horses - scary.
Safe travels
I got the sticker! It’s going to look great on my car! Thank you Rick and Linda! Every one needs to buy one!
Thank you for the Ricola tip Mia, I'll look for the tea.
Excellent point about the trucks! They are, for the most part, professional drivers. They are not sight seeing or on holidays, they are out there working for a living. Give them a break and let them go by. You have to ask yourself, would you rather a truck behind you or in front of you in an emergency stop situation?
As a addendum, this is one of your best video's to date, IMHO. Keep up the great work!
Thank you, Bushmoose, appreciate your comment. And we will keep trying to make quality videos for you all.
Ive always wanted to stop at that army navy but everytime ive passed it was closed, thanks for sharing !
Yes, you need to go inside, but make sure you have some time and maybe even leave your wallet in your car!
Excellent Advise!!! Thank you.
Thank you. I will be towing soon and never considered most of the information you gave. A true eye opener.
Glad it was helpful! I hope your towing travels will be safe and yet adventurous. Thanks for watching.
I have been riding motorcycles since I was 14 (70 now) and it doesn't matter what speed they have to pass, and cut you short!
My motto is.... do I want to get there quickly, or do I want to get there safely! Good video Rick!
I've seen one state's driving motto---arrive alive. That's a good one although arriving safely is even better.
Thank you so much for all this information we as well do not do the speed limit when towing I sharing this it should help people think when they travel…! Safe travel
Excellent tips!
Glad you like them!
This is a great video for me! Thanks! I've wondered about the tow/haul feature on my Yukon. And mine has a 30 gallon gas tank. But I still have no trailer to haul. The company building it can't get 6' axles. I ordered it the end of March. I thought about getting my deposit back but prices have gone up on everything. I'm going to wait for now. And we did once have to move a 22' Airstream with a '65 Buick station wagon. Not recommended! It lifted the front of the car up. Fortunately we moved it without problems.
Hello Teri, sorry to hear about those axles being backordered. That has to be hurting their sales too!
Your 22' Airstream w/that Buick reminds me of that ole' movie with Lucy and Dezi called (I think) the "LONG" trailer, Dezi pulling that long TT with an ole' Mercury convertable.....very funny movie.
@@nohomenomad1427 well it wasn't as long as that. But it's funnier now to think of the front end sliding back and forth. The 69 Caddy that we had fitted out with air shocks handled it much better.
Thanks for sharing your travel experiences...so many newcomers to the world of trailering and your info will perhaps prevent mishaps and misadventures for them.
Thanks, Doug. I hope so, we see a lot of newbies and hope this will help some folks, newbies and old-timers alike. We also learn a lot from our viewers too.
Just love your videos! Thanks 🙏
Thank you, Denise! We appreciate you watching them, thanks for sticking with us.
Spot on information fully retired a week ago Friday left last Tuesday for my first retirement camping archery hunting trip found myself doing the speed limit or under instead of the normal i’m in a hurry 9 miles over. 👍👊😎
Very good advice. Would you find it in a driver’s training booklet…maybe, maybe not. But you would find under the heading ‘courteous and common sense’, a place it seems fewer people look to any more. Thanks for the reminders!
thank you both for doing this subject on towing
Great advice as always thanks Rik
A very well thought out video! Excellent advice! Thanks
Glad you enjoyed it!
I never use cruise control when towing our 6x10' cargo trailer. And I recently drove 600+ miles in one day in a 26' U-Haul and didn't use it there either. OK, so I'm a 73-year-old grandma, but I just like to be able to "feel" what the vehicle is doing at all times... ~ Kir
I don't use it all the time, but on long, level stretches I do to give my leg a rest. In hilly country it's more trouble than it's worth.
Great one again! My Exact advice on slow, passing and highway driving!! I wish to heaven I could have this talk in EVERY driver Ed class!! So important. How can we get this in the minds of Every driver. Thnx Again.
All that you say here is mostly true and good advice from experience as well. A lot of people have no idea what is the right way to do things when it comes to towing and driving in general . There are so many people and vehicles on the roads today that driving is a very big risk. I was very surprised to find that a large number of states actually have NO required driver training courses at all ! People just stumble through it by trial and error ! Then if they survive they learn from the experience . Those high speeds of 80 mph plus , should not be for all vehicles. The old saying of "speed kills" is very true.
Sudden stops!
Excellent!
Great information thank you.
Great video, thanks! Anyone else catch the guy doing a face plant on the dock at about 12:38? Oh dear!
It did take him awhile to get up.
I full timed around the country in a 34 ft TT for the last 15 yrs for work, wife got tired of hotels an apt's. Couldn't agree with you more on the slow an steady approach of 55 to 60 mph when towing, an safety is #1 period. We've seen our share of RV'ers that have totaled there rigs an killed themselves by taking the speed approach to towing, its not a race. Thx for the vid
Thanks, William. While on this last road trip, we drove by an overturned truck and camper trailer that didn't make the turn. Hope the people were okay.
Great advice! Basically, be thoughtful of others, pay attention to your surroundings and don't drive like you're in a race. I always try and be thoughtful of large truck drivers. If you're kind to them most of them will look out for you if you have any trouble.
That's right, Marcia. Always be a courteous driver.
When I get behind the wheel I tell myself to be in control of my ego, do not react to problem people. Always tell yourself to be aware in all directions and all situations; keep your eyes roaming the view, the mirrors, the dashboard at all times. Do not let momentum dull your response to situations; always be ready to dodge, or brake. Don't take chances.
I like your advice a lot, Richard!
@@gonagain Thanks, I like yours also. By dashboard, I meant gauges.
Thank you for the information!! ALL of it usable to me sir. Safe travels to you both.
Glad it was helpful!
Very informative, thanks.
love it thanks
I was doing a lot of the things you suggested, now I don't feel bad about going slow!
A lot of folks pulling large trailers fast don't realize that it takes a long time to stop!
If you ever have a blowout never hit the brakes! I talk from experience! Keep clam is key!
Good information there!
Great video and I live in Wyoming and as you know the winds in this region can be fierce. A 65mph crosswind in a large trailer wreaks havoc on towing and is very dangerous. I see it between Casper and Laramie. Huge 5th wheels swaying at 70mph with 60+mph crosswinds. In the winter on I-80 18 wheelers flip over and there have been major pileups when weather and lack of visibility are added to the equation. Thank you for another great video.
Montana, like Wyoming, gets some fierce winds. Highways get closed regularly because a semi got blown over. The worse is when the wind blows over the parked railroad cars. Thanks for watching, Jeff!
Good/great info. Thank you. May God Bless.
Glad it was helpful!
Oh boy you brought up a good one when you go to pass somebody and they step on it I’m a truck driver and I put on over 1 million miles the biggest thing I see when people are towing their vehicle is too small for what that are pulling
I have watched a LOT of you tube videos. This is the perfect video. I have a 28 ft TT weighs 5500lbs, I have a 14 ft cargo trailer weighs 1300 lbs. I get the same mileage pulling either one. GREAT video.
Hello Mark! That proves my thoughts about it being mostly about the windage.
Thanks for the information 🙂
Thanks for watching, Cynthia.
Those of us old enough to remember the "double buckle" (55mph) 1970's should understand the MPG thing. Back then my 3/4 ton carburetor equipped Chevy could get 16-17mpg if the pilot did his part..... 2500 rpm at 15" manifold vacuum equalled 52mph. Above that, you could almost watch the fuel needle move. Funny thing, at the end of a days travel, the folks that passed us had spent so mucho time stopping to refuel that we'd all arrive nearly together. Happy Days, Safe Travels
Make that "double NICKLE" 70's... dern spell checker !
Reason three is my fall-back position. I like the extended range. You’re right about the aggressive passers. They just want to get around because we are ahead of them. As you suggested, I slow for them, sometimes pull over. And just like you mentioned, that trucker is WORKING. I pulled over for two the last time I moved the camper a few days ago.
One thing to remember, if the person passing you fails to get safely around, the accident could EASILY involve YOU. NOBODY needs trouble like that on a pleasure trip.
EVERYTHING you said in this video is perfectly correct in my opinion! I’ll add one point. I don’t SET the speed limit the impatient moron behind me thinks I should be breaking, but I do try to DRIVE the limit set by another.
BTW, as a pilot, I know you are familiar with vortex generators. A few of those on the rear, sides and top of your trailer, can help break yep that suction. Might be fodder for future content?
I've seen the supposed reviews on those vortex generators but they always leave out the part about whether or not they actually improve their mileage and by how much. It's always alluded to, but never discussed. I do know that the trucking industry proved that the rear suction, or "Drag", is by far the worst enemy but there isn't a good solution to that yet. I have a story to tell that proves that...
@@gonagain right! They put those taper devices on the tail end of trailers as well as the skirting. One would THINK that if they went to that expense there would be a handsome payoff, but…who knows!
I always wondered about the VGs on STOL planes too. Human. Nature dictates that if we buy something we are likely to defend it, even in the absence of hard data. Sooo…again, who knows?😆
My 6x12 CTC is not a v-nose like yours. It is slightly rounded, so presents an almost flat surface to the wind. I often toyed with the idea of putting a small, sharp ridge vertically on the front, almost like some stall strips on planes. Just a little something to accelerate the laminar flow. If I had an accurate way to objectively measure wind resistance it might be interesting. Lacking a way to prove the concept takes the luster off the concept.
Great info on towing a trailer. Please be patient student driver.
I will pass you simply because I like to see what is ahead. Its a safety thing for me. LoL
A FANTASTIC, informative video..!! It's called 'Common Sense'... ! Like you, I'm over 65..LOL!. My father taught me all these things more than 56 years ago and I continue to practice them every day.. I also try to avoid drive-time traffic whenever I can..
Hopefully, the younger generations viewing this will learn something and practice what you preach.. I've wondered if a deflector mounted on rear to deflect the air down the rear doors would help reduce the turbulence? Any reason why tongue weight wasn't mentioned.?
Brilliantly done, Rick..!!
Thank you, pjf. I should have talked about tongue weight and load distribution, maybe I can include that in another video.
All of your travel safety recommendations are ours as well. We have a dually 3500 with a 2 slide cabover camper.
Nice outfit!
Like you said, "it works for us". 👍 I like to see everyone's rigs, so many different set-ups. And all to fit the needs of the owners. 😍
Great video thanks
Thank you for watching, Bob. Appreciate it.
Great info as usual... I usually go 5 mph under the speed limit when I'm towing, and try to pull over when possible to let others get past me if its "no passing" stretch of road. Thanks for another great video 👍
Thanks for watching, Mark.
