Travel Trailer Towing Troubles!

  • Sometimes towing a trailer can have it's exciting moments and we've had our share of ours! Glare ice, blinding snow, high winds to name just a few, but some situations can be made better through better driving skills and a degree of professionalism and that's what this video is about, being safer on the road while towing a travel trailer. Tune in and check your skills!
    Getting out on the road is what Linda and I love to do with our converted cargo trailer camper. We're part time nomads and the nomadic lifestyle suits us to a Tee. Whether your RV is a camper van, camp trailer, travel trailer, motorhome or just a car and a tent, there's going to be something interesting for you in the videos we produce. Back roads and overlanding are part of what we do while exploring the western states for beautiful, peaceful and sometimes remote places to camp on BLM and National Forest land (public land). Taking care of ourselves as much as possible and doing our own repairs is a must because we travel on a fixed income and a limited budget. If your into being off-grid and boondocking, or doing dispersed camping whenever possible then you'll appreciate the discussions on batteries, solar panels and solar chargers or power stations and 12v refrigeration. Come on along, we're happy to have your company!

      I hate it when I'm passing in the left lane, and somebody passes me in the the right lane shoots the gap, and causes me to jam the brakes to avoid a collision. I call them hot heads.

    Thanks for the common sense trailer towing information. I learned towing the common sense way growing up towing vehicles.
    Many people, no fault of their own, buy a trailer in adult years and have never towed anything. They don’t know towing etiquette and safety because no one has ever taught them.
    Thank you for being a teacher and a teacher who is talented at sharing his wisdom and knowledge.

    Hah well said "ALL OF IT" The part about vehicle size vs trailer size is so true today. The RV sales lots sell way to big of trailers for most tow rigs today. A Jeep liberty is not SAFE towing a 22 foot travel trailer regardless if the weights fall within the limits, It's the tail wagging the Dog , and we see it often .. Great info Thanks for posting.

    You cover a lot of my pet peaces but such is life. I have found that timing is very important. I try to hit congested areas at low traffic times. Some places I avoid like the plague. Since I'm retired and not on a schedule, I adjust my speed to stay in the power band of the engine and let people pass. I've had two blown tires on my RV and one on my tow dolly. Now I run new tires as much as possible.

    One of your very best videos yet!
    Wife and I tow 30 ft Flagstaff of about 7900 lbs with F150 Super Crew cab . 3.5 ltr ecoboost v6 and 10 speed.
    This transmission and engine combo are incredible. The software in tow mode adapts quickly to every towing load. Also when in tow/ haul mode applies engine braking too ( though with low compression v6 not a lot of engine braking is posdible).
    Not only is it courteous to pull over and let cars pass but made be the law of the land.
    Here in WI I believe it is required if there are 5 or more vehicles behind you if you can safely pull over. I frequenlty do.
    Rarely enforced and severely abused by many farmers here.
    We have a 6x12 cargo trailer too. Much easier to tow but not much better on fuel. Wind drag is almost as much on cargo as travel trailer.
    You commented on the tire/ speed issue but i think it needs more emphasis.
    ST Chinese tire are usually only rated to 65 under ideal conditions: 70 degrees outside/.
    Smooth pavement.
    Proper loading of weight.
    Time in service. Less than 5 to 10 years.
    Great video! Thanks again.

      There is a simple solution for monitoring mileage. Buy a Bluetooth adapter that plugs into the OBD port. Get Torque app for phone or tablet, then you can see all the OBD information as you drive. You can see the MPG realtime and can adjust throttle to meet your needs. Before high tech, we did essentially the same thing with a intake manifold vacuum gauge.

    I recently saw 5 large campers 5th wheels going down the Interstate and I was not driving slow, they blew by me like I was standing still. A Coach bus drive channel I watch just put out a video and talked about the bus is governed at 70 so when they have the cruise set at 70 and come beside a car that suddenly accelerates to keep the bus behind them and then in a short distance rinse and repeat. Some drivers are in a zone and have no idea what is going on around them or are spiteful and looking to cause problems for others. Stay safe and healthy!!

    Excellent point about the trucks! They are, for the most part, professional drivers. They are not sight seeing or on holidays, they are out there working for a living. Give them a break and let them go by. You have to ask yourself, would you rather a truck behind you or in front of you in an emergency stop situation?

The company building it can't get 6' axles. I ordered it the end of March. I thought about getting my deposit back but prices have gone up on everything. I'm going to wait for now. I never use cruise control when towing our 6x10' cargo trailer. And I recently drove 600+ miles in one day in a 26' U-Haul and didn't use it there either. OK, so I'm a 73-year-old grandma, but I just like to be able to "feel" what the vehicle is doing at all times... ~ Kir

      I don't use it all the time, but on long, level stretches I do to give my leg a rest. In hilly country it's more trouble than it's worth.

    All that you say here is mostly true and good advice from experience as well. A lot of people have no idea what is the right way to do things when it comes to towing and driving in general . There are so many people and vehicles on the roads today that driving is a very big risk. I was very surprised to find that a large number of states actually have NO required driver training courses at all ! People just stumble through it by trial and error ! Then if they survive they learn from the experience . Those high speeds of 80 mph plus , should not be for all vehicles. The old saying of "speed kills" is very true.

    I full timed around the country in a 34 ft TT for the last 15 yrs for work, wife got tired of hotels an apt's. Couldn't agree with you more on the slow an steady approach of 55 to 60 mph when towing, an safety is #1 period. We've seen our share of RV'ers that have totaled there rigs an killed themselves by taking the speed approach to towing, its not a race. Thx for the vid

    Great advice! Basically, be thoughtful of others, pay attention to your surroundings and don't drive like you're in a race. I always try and be thoughtful of large truck drivers. If you're kind to them most of them will look out for you if you have any trouble.

    When I get behind the wheel I tell myself to be in control of my ego, do not react to problem people. Always tell yourself to be aware in all directions and all situations; keep your eyes roaming the view, the mirrors, the dashboard at all times. Do not let momentum dull your response to situations; always be ready to dodge, or brake. Don't take chances.

    Great video and I live in Wyoming and as you know the winds in this region can be fierce. A 65mph crosswind in a large trailer wreaks havoc on towing and is very dangerous. I see it between Casper and Laramie. Huge 5th wheels swaying at 70mph with 60+mph crosswinds. In the winter on I-80 18 wheelers flip over and there have been major pileups when weather and lack of visibility are added to the equation. Thank you for another great video.

      Montana, like Wyoming, gets some fierce winds. Highways get closed regularly because a semi got blown over. The worse is when the wind blows over the parked railroad cars. Thanks for watching, Jeff!

    Those of us old enough to remember the "double buckle" (55mph) 1970's should understand the MPG thing. Back then my 3/4 ton carburetor equipped Chevy could get 16-17mpg if the pilot did his part..... 2500 rpm at 15" manifold vacuum equalled 52mph. Above that, you could almost watch the fuel needle move. Funny thing, at the end of a days travel, the folks that passed us had spent so mucho time stopping to refuel that we'd all arrive nearly together. Happy Days, Safe Travels

    Reason three is my fall-back position. I like the extended range. You’re right about the aggressive passers. They just want to get around because we are ahead of them. As you suggested, I slow for them, sometimes pull over. And just like you mentioned, that trucker is WORKING. I pulled over for two the last time I moved the camper a few days ago.
    One thing to remember, if the person passing you fails to get safely around, the accident could EASILY involve YOU. NOBODY needs trouble like that on a pleasure trip.
    EVERYTHING you said in this video is perfectly correct in my opinion! I’ll add one point. I don’t SET the speed limit the impatient moron behind me thinks I should be breaking, but I do try to DRIVE the limit set by another.
    BTW, as a pilot, I know you are familiar with vortex generators. A few of those on the rear, sides and top of your trailer, can help break yep that suction. Might be fodder for future content?

    • @gonagain
      @gonagain  Před 2 lety +1

      I've seen the supposed reviews on those vortex generators but they always leave out the part about whether or not they actually improve their mileage and by how much. It's always alluded to, but never discussed. I do know that the trucking industry proved that the rear suction, or "Drag", is by far the worst enemy but there isn't a good solution to that yet. I have a story to tell that proves that...

    • @hgj2019
      @hgj2019 Před 2 lety

      @@gonagain right! They put those taper devices on the tail end of trailers as well as the skirting. One would THINK that if they went to that expense there would be a handsome payoff, but…who knows!
      I always wondered about the VGs on STOL planes too. Human. Nature dictates that if we buy something we are likely to defend it, even in the absence of hard data. Sooo…again, who knows?😆

    • @hgj2019
      @hgj2019 Před 2 lety

      My 6x12 CTC is not a v-nose like yours. It is slightly rounded, so presents an almost flat surface to the wind. I often toyed with the idea of putting a small, sharp ridge vertically on the front, almost like some stall strips on planes. Just a little something to accelerate the laminar flow. If I had an accurate way to objectively measure wind resistance it might be interesting. Lacking a way to prove the concept takes the luster off the concept.
