With this tutorial we will use Lightroom, StarStax and LR Timelapse to turn your star trail photos into a video!
Photo location: Eastpoint Lighthouse in New Jersey
Tech: Nikon D600 Rokinon 14mm f2.8 ISO 2000 Shutter 25 seconds 330 images.

Great man ! Tell me one thing. At the end , star trails over house , you recorded clockwise and counterclockwise rotation of starts . Did you done anything in aftereffects or the raw file is also with counter rotations ? Thanks

I don’t own after effects… when making star trails in starstax you can process the images in reverse order which will change the direction of the rotation.

You're most welcome! Do you by chance have a tutorial on how to do time lapses of meteor showers and edit the final picture so the meteors are all coming from one area (not scattered everywhere) on the final picture?
Not currently... But I will add that to my list of tutorials. I'll have to wait until the next good meteor shower occurs though, so sometime in 2017 I will try it out!

I'm only suggesting this out of an idea, since I've yet to try star trails, but wouldn't it be easier to export from lightroom as you did, then open as a sequence in Premier, then apply the echo filter? You might not be able to do the cost mode this way, but for the basic trails I would imagine it might work. Then you could mask out the foreground if you felt you needed too.
What do you think?

Hi Mike as always excellent tutorial!! in your tutorial you have a nice exposed foreground..I would like to ask how can we turn star trails in time-lapse when you take long exposure photos for underexposed foreground and blending them in Photoshop..I mean you have first to blend each photo of the sequence with the new well exposed foreground and after export them in order to have the new sequence for the time lapse?
You can take the foreground picture, mask out the sky and save it as a PNG file. Then bring it into your video editor with the star trail time lapse. Then you can put the image of the foreground over the foreground that is underexposed. Since the sky is removed and saved as a PNG you won't have to mask it out in the video editor since the sky should not be visible in the photo editor (hope that makes sense).

Best one iv seen. What intervals did you use with the 25 second exposure?
I use a 26 (sometimes 27) second interval. It depends on the card / camera. I noticed my D800 can handle a 26 interval with a 25 second exposure, but my D810 needs an extra second for some reason, so I have use 27 seconds for that camera.
@@Milkywaymike ok thanks. Yeah you must shoot all night. I do 15sec and 10 int and I go for 4 hours to get about 400 pics
So cool. How timely that this video just popped up as I was up until 3am taking star trails photos over Bellingham bay WA state last night into this morning. Took 257- 30 second shots. Already did the did the composite with star trails software. I was was thinking I should make this into a time lapse video and while watching some star trails videos, you're video popped up. I'm going to re-render to save as progression and I need to first cut some photos out. I have a few cargo ships that left a great big honking white streak across the islands low on the horizon. Looks cool, but I'm not sure how that would come out in video.
If you put it in "comet mode" that bright white streak will show up, however it will fade away slowly. If you leave it in normal mode by not checking off "comet mode" that bright white light will stay there in the video. Give both a try and see what looks better!

Hey Mike great video, if i wanted star trails image and also a timelapse of the same images, do i have 2 separate folders on the desktop. Sorry if it’s been asked already. Thanks in advance.
That's personal preference...Typically I do make 2 folders because sometimes I edit my star trail image different then my star trail time lapse. On my desktop I make a folder labeled photography which is all my still images and then another folder labeled video for my time lapses. I then just put both sets of images in each folder and edit them separately.

Great tutorial! Thanx a lot! But i have a problem on a step when you exporting files from lightroom to LRtimelapse.. in the bottom of window shown this: "Unable to Export: The output path contains characters that are not supported".. what am i doing wrong?!
It sounds like a conflict in the naming convention, avoid using these characters: []=%$+,;. Retry that step but play around with how you name the files and folder. If you are still getting an issue you may have to contact Adobe support. Can you take a video of you screen when you get to that step? It will be easier for me to see what is going on.
Very well done. I use Affinity rather than LR, so am trying to figure out how to translate from what you describe into Affinity.
I was thinking of buying Affinity so I can test it out and have an alternative editing software.
Hi Mike, great video! In your intro video it shows going from a regular time lapse to comet mode in StarStax, your video doesn’t cover how you achieved that. If you could explain further?
All I did is take the normal time lapse and the time lapse from star stax and then played them one after the other. So for example if you took 400 pictures of the stars just turn those 400 pics into a normal time lapse. Then take those same 400 pictures and create a starstax time lapse like I do in the video tutorial. Now you will have to 2 time lapse videos of the same thing, but one will just be stars rotating in the sky while the other time lapse will be stars trailing in the sky.. Then put those 2 clips into one video.
Thats all I did for that intro.

Nice and good video. But how do you get LRTimelapse 4 into a plug-in in Lightroom? When I get to File - Plug in extras, then I can`t find LRTimelapse. I have downloaded the program at my mac, so it shows in Lr under Export, Preset, but it`s still not installed.

What is the exposure time for each image? if 3 minutes for each image , is it possible to create this kind of video? Thank you!
The exposure time was probably around 25 seconds, but you can use any time you want for the exposure depending on your desired effect you are going for....
To make a time lapse video you need to capture enough images to create the video. For example, video is created with frames (exposures). If you want a video that is 24 frames per second, then you need to capture 24 photos in a row to create 1 second of video. If you want a 10 second time lapse, that is 240 photos.
You can do this with 3 minute exposures for each image, however that will take up a lot time. It would take 72 minutes just to create 1 second of video at 24 frames per second.
How would this be possible to happen all on its own just after taking a still image of the stars with my Samsung Galaxy s7 edge.
Typically phones don't have the same control as a DSLR or Mirrorless Camera but I did find this video that shows it is "kind of" possible. czcams.com/video/0yvmtes4Cwo/video.html
You definitely need a tripod for your phone to sit on and then you may need an app to give you control over the camera settings. Their might even be a star trail app for you phone, but unfortunately I don't have one of those to test out.

Since those star trails are zooming in, it will ruin the foreground so you need to mask out the foreground while the vortex star trails move in the background which I have a video on --> czcams.com/video/ZDS26CT-CTE/video.html
Tks. you said "those star trails are zooming in", so did u use a customize auto-zoom equipment to shoot them ? I only know the method to create that effect with single photo in pts (and the result is only a still image, not video).

How long does it usually take for you to edit these timelapses? I've spent about 8 hours on the whole process with 950 images
Usually a few hours... 8 seems pretty long but it all depends on your computer's processing speed.
Yeah, I've also had alot of problems with LRtimelapse rendering, I'm keeping a close dialogue with gunther to try to fix it :p Btw, why aren't you importing the images to LRTimelapse first before editing them in LR? I managed to get way better results when i added them to LRtimelapse to smoothen out the expos and color transitions
Usually I do but this tutorial I wanted to show people that you don't necessarily need LRTimelapse... I use it, but if people have an alternative program to turn stills into a video that they can use that also.
How do the trees not move at all?
It was not windy at all that day and this was a wide angle lens so I'm sure if I zoomed in on the trees their was slight movement its just not too noticeable.
