Dave and Herb are joined by mix engineer Jaycen Joshua on the 127th episode of Pensado's Place! Please 'Like' and 'Follow'! / pensadosplace / pensadosplace
Dave we need a pensado's place on integrating digital & analog equipment. Signal routing, digital to analog conversion; basically running our sounds through hardware and printing back into protools will us faithful viewers to take the musicality & overall sonic presentation of our mixes to the next level. Thank you, Armen G (TeEmGIFT Låbs)
Jaycen Joshua is probably my favorite mixing engineer at the moment. Great to see him on the show again! His vocal processing and all his EFX are damn near perfect and very creative every mix I hear from him... Thanks again for another GREAT show guys!
thank you so much.I love the show and the Miley Cyrus song is one of my favorite pop tracks of all time.I wasn't expecting the mixer of that track to be on this episode It's amazing to hear his approach. Mike Will did a great job producing, it's truly a pop gem, a milestone, it's like the track of my dreams. Anyway, thank you again, I love how this is the only show where I could both geek out about a Miley Cyrus song and at the same time about a weird, vintage plugin or piece of gear.
There was some really, really great advice in this, thank you guys so much for having Jaycen on. I work in a completely different genre of music (Hard Rock/Metal/Extreme metal), but a lot of the advice really crosses over. With that being said, I'd love for you guys to have one of the bigger names in that genre of music on, two suggestions would be Joey Sturgis (who is sure to stir up opinions in the comments!), and Andy Sneap.
when you said he has a lot of things going on the right side of the mix. i was so glad to hear that, i thought my left ear was going out on me. but still it sat amazing in the mix i love it!
Jaycen Joshua has to be one of the greatest hip hop mix engineers out there. His kicks do sound really massive and "bounce-y". I noticed that Mike Will often has his kicks hitting along with his snares - and perhaps to keep his peak meter in check, right now Jaycen Joshua seems to have thought it was best to let go of the snare a bit in such a scenario. If there's anything (in my view) he should be going for, it would be perfecting that delicate combination of kicks & snares hitting altogether, towards a more balanced trade where the snare would actually survive the process. Keep it up Jay!
I really like the new format in which Dave gets the hit makers of the moment on the show. It is to Dave's and Herb's credit that they knows so many talented people in the industry and I fell very lucky that these technical interviews are available to us.
Man funny he comes across a little secretive and then ends up being one of the most informative guests ever haha! Awesome everyone involved, its things like this that make me glad to be born in this era...
Even though I feel guilty asking for anything more than what you guys have given all of us so far, it would be amazing if Serban Ghenea came on the show!!
I Love Dave & Herb! Another monumental show, indeed! Jaycen Joshua is The Truth! GREAT. ITL, as well! Much Love & Respect to you guys for disclosing "secrets" of pro mix engineers! This is stuff that audio schools don't really teach. These are techniques learned by "assisting" a great Engineer over a period of years! Thanks!! Oh yea... How about bringing on one of hip-hop's influential mixers from the ATL scene, LESLIE BRAITHWAITE!
Jaycen Joshua is an extremely talented dude. He's got an intellectual flare to his philosophy -- a philosophy that's very honest and without pretense. That's very rare. He learned from the best, though. ;-)
Dave, I often have similar problems with bass notes sounding drastically louder than others and normal compression never seems to solve the issue. from watching this ITL I see that you are using the C1 side chain to sort this problem out. I was wondering how to go about using this plug in to solve the issue. What should I be looking to target when using this plug in? What parameters are essential to getting it right? cheers
does gain staging mean making sure the mix bus is not clipping but keeping it at a decent level? so after eq-ing a sound making sure its not clippnig or pushing the mixbuss too far or vice versa...if the level drops after eq-ing adding some gain again?
The best part about this show is that when they talk to this producers and mix engineers they never push Pro Tools, they may mention it in passing because that is the program they all like to use (except for the occasional Fruity Loops shout out) but they never say you can only do what they do in Pro Tools. It is possible in Logic or Cubase to do and sound like they do. I am a Pro Tools user and I love Logic, it's great that this is about the art not the software or hardware.
Jaycen did Kevin Gates "Islah" album & that album by far is the best mixed HipHop album I heard in the last 10yrs, as far as im concerned hes the best in the game 💯
Thank You Jaycen. WOW. Thank You again for the tips and the advise. and also for not B-S-ING us on the gear and technics you use. You just made me 1000% better.
What eq or filters do u think are best for splitting tracks into lo/med/hi (like Jaycen mentioned) - so that you don't get overlap or gaps in the freq spectrum?
I know what he means about fl studio instruments are louder when tracked out... I noticed with the latest fl studio versions, when you start a new project, there's a limiter already on the master bus.. I usually take it off right before I make a beat.. Some producers don't...
And this is exactly what separates medium from top shelf engineers. Engineers afraid of sharing their workflow, even calling it secrets, just show insecurity. I truly respect this guy, but he's a 0 to me.
@@alxitso I think you've got him all wrong here. Jaycen is in fact very enthusiastic about sharing quality techniques and helping others as much as possible. Watch Pensado's Place #330 , and you'll know. He's being facetious saying "not to give too many secrets away", because he then gives away as many secrets as he can.
@@shortuts No, he wasn't being facetious. It was a pure freudian slip. He does see his knowledge as secrets. Notthing wrong with that, IMO. We all learn stuff we'd like to keep as a competitive edge. The world is full of imitators and copycats. Also confirmed by his sentence, a little later: "three plugins... but I'll give you one" and the repeated sentence "not to give too many secrets away" a few minutes later.
@@Tazmanian_Ninja A freudian slip would be unintentional. If you want to keep your competitive edge in psychoanalysis, go watch Jaycen in his more recent appearance on Pensado's Place. He's sharing key info left and right.
@Pensado's Place If those are chain diagram Dave looks down at to get an idea to ask a question, I need those diagrams.... never thought of being that organized.
Big Interview : Jaycen's a Gorgan!!! Jaycen's making his own reverb and delay choices and - pitching and changing KIK sounds - HE should be getting "Co-Produced By" credits.... Cause that's Production.. When I deliver files to be mixed, all the stuff is how I want it... All i really expect from a mixer is Eq,Compression,Level Automation, panning And overall polish... Am I doing too much?
+Roger Drakes Depends on how good your engineer is. Sometimes the creative and technical side clash, which ever one is more important in a certain situation will determine if the engineer can offer a technical advantage. Engineer may have a sound choice you find worth scraping a particular creative move for like a certain kick drum. Its no different then a singer hitting the note a little flat and the songwriter says that's fine it adds a little flavor leave it like that.
I am wondering too. All the things he does is more something I would do in the production fase, cause he changes the tone and colour of the bass completely with those plugins. Maybe it works like this in the mix, but we can't hear that, when he just soloes it.
at 44:20 what does he say he uses to draw out the esses and t's? It sounds like he is saying click pane, or clip paint or something. Can't be Clip Paint though, cause that's a graphic programme.

Jaycen has gems for years, Such an amazing engineer! Studying his work for references & his great sonic taste, Thanks for sharing the knowledge! =)
What he said about side chaining the low end of bass when the kick hits is a GEM
+Michael Miller most definitely!!!!

This show is such a great resource for audio engineers of all skill levels. Much appreciated.

I was lucky to have been trained up by an engineer called Brad Davis from NY. You so remind me of him. It makes me smile. I love you Dave.
