I have an '83 240D with a stick-shift. Bought it just over a year ago. Had 363,000 & some miles on it, motor rebuilt at 197K. I put another 9,000 miles on it, and it starts right up like a gas engine. I love it. When I looked at it, I did a certain unique compression test I learned from Kent Bergsma of "Mercedes Source" which began with starting the motor, looking for any excess colored smoke, then turning the oil cap to the position to remove it without actually removing it. The oil cap stayed on and didn't even move. The car didn't just pass the test with flying colors, it aced it. No oil consumption either. So, I did not hesitate to buy the car, because it's a diamond. The previous owner owned it for 21 years and decided it was time to move on, exactly like this video host has now with his tremendous white 300D Turbo. No regrets about what I got, except sometimes, no power especially when climbing hills. I live in Washington State and have now driven it to Oregon twice already and once down into California. The highest posted speed limit on Interstate 5 is 70 mph. And where it's 70, that's how fast I drive it. I keep up with oil changes, valve adjustments, and maintaining low RPMs until the motor is completely warmed up.

@@piemasta93 He will definitely regret it. The 240D I talked about in my post right up above yours, I feel is a diamond. And that's what this guy has, a diamond. Sometimes I wish I'd chosen a 300D Turbo over my 240 because I'd have more power climbing hills, And I could drive it in states with speed limits higher than 70 mph because it would definitely fit in more. BUT I also have a 2011 Mustang that I could drive to those states. And the 240 has a little less to have to worry about.

Had a classmate with a 230 with the highly underpowered 4cyl gas engine with a 4 speed manual. It was one of those hodge podge grey market imports from the 80s with a marginally ok swapped instrument cluster. The speedo would stop at 55 and then instantly read 0 the moment you went over 55 and it had a hand written KM next to the mileage indicator. Ran well enough for driving in Hawaii but over a decade of neglect left it a rusty pile. :(

If it hasn’t been touched, 2.5 turns CCW will “max out” the adjustment on the pump.

Hey Tommy!! It’s likely you will regret selling that car, but I don’t say that as a bad thing. As we get older we all have a car or two or many that we have sold or traded over the years. It’s an awesome part of owning a collection of cars! You are doing well and just like the channel, there will be lots of cars that come and go in your stable, I’m sure. Not a bad thing, each one gives you more experience and memories, good and bad. I have 8 cars/trucks right now, 6 are classics, I built 3 of them from almost nothing, repowered and repainted (full colour change it was hot pink when I bought it) a 1949 Ford F1 pickup from a Chevy 350 and 700R4 to a Flathead V8, Supercharged, backed up by an A4OD transmission. I have had 54(?) classic vehicles to dat and will keep on. I have a 350 and 700R4 looking for a home right now. It is a nice powertrain, FOR a GM!!!
You are having fun and should continue to do so.

If only I could get a decent mechanic to look at my 123 I would put it back on the road. Right now it’s stored in my garage. I’m thinking it needs a rebuild but not sure. Wish I could get the one you’re selling.

Nearly impossible to get qualified hands on w123's, 124's, or 126's these days.
If you can manage the time & patience to be able to do as much as you can, you already know NO ONE will ever love it or care as much about it as you.
I have a C207 chassis myself, & although I won't pretend it's a true Benz, I'm getting my wrenching practice in with the hopes of going back in time asap.

The K-jet fuel injection is a nightmare to get someone who knows about it. Which is surprising as it was used by so many other cars, porsche, volvo, vw etc. When it wears technicians just want to swop expensive rebuilt parts when what's needed is adjustment.

Just the other day, there was a guy on Legit Street Cars crying because he had to sell his 190e Cosworth due to a bad leg that stopped him from diving stick. Think it through, man.

I love how that engine sounds. Idk if I would say it's the best car ever created but, I also fail to come up with a valid alternative. Nice review.

I'd own a classic Mercedes-Benz like this over their new stuff that is all about appearance and high tech gadgets with questionable reliability. Yeah, this car may not hit the mark on what modern buyers want, or meet modern safety standards, but it says something when you see these cars in daily use around the world as private cars and taxis. From a time when MB meant over-engineered quality that was made to last.

I own a 1984 and 1985 CA 300D, bought in 2001 and 2008. Not a superfan, I bought the 1984 for its engine to replace the failed engine in the 1985 but fixed the 1984 easily (crack in K-frame) and found a good used engine for the 1985. For those in California, try filling with renewable diesel (Propel or Union 76) as the engine will run much better and idle smoother and quieter, and no you don't need a fuel-heater conversion, as those work in any diesel engine. The best things are the solid way the doors close and the independent rear suspension which lets the car handle amazingly on twisty roads, if used to older U.S. cars with a straight rear axle. I thought the dash and console a bit clumsy but see they continued that in later models (even 2000+?). I have no trouble accelerating to freeway speeds. Perhaps the biggest surprise was the mediocre mileage. Many have long claimed >30 mpg, but EPA is 19 hwy and most owners report 22 mpg at 65 mph, matching what I get. The 1985 has a slightly higher rear-end ratio for a slight improvement, but the engine still spins too fast ~3000 rpm at 65 mph. Seems they could have done better with 4 gears. First gear is way too low so almost wasted. The trim is stainless steel, like some 1960's U.S. cars, so should last forever if not dinged, and you can polish it back to like new. I don't think the crazed paint at the lower quarter panels indicates rust, as mine have that and they are rust-free. I think there is some type of factory rubber/plastic coating there which was painted over. Someone could tell with a paint thickness gage.
