There was no way I was going to leave Hungary without trying what is considered one of the spiciest native foods to Europe - Hungarian fisherman’s soup - known in Hungarian as Halászlé. And there are two very different versions in Hungary - each with their own following. So there was no way, we couldn’t try both of them in a single day. So my friend Adam (www.adamosvald.com/) and I set off on a Hungarian food mission to eat Europe’s spiciest food! #HungarianFood #spicy #Europe
Szeged, Hungary - The first type of Hungarian fisherman’s soup comes from a place called Szeged, and that’s where we drover first. We drove directly to a restaurant called Kiskőrössy Halászcsárda, right along the banks of the river, and known for their fish. They have a number of other fish dishes on their menu, but no one comes and doesn’t order the Halászlé. It was delicious, full of flavor and vibrant on the paprika. Total price - 20,720 HUF ($68.38)
Baja, Hungary - Next we drove onwards to Baja, also famous for their Hungarian fisherman’s soup, but different in style. We went to a home style restaurant called Potykacsárda and ordered up a number of dishes. I immediately loved their red color of every dish - so bright red and with some spiciness to it. Adam and I had a cold fruit soup, a dish of paprikash with catfish which was insanely delicious, and finally the famous Halászlé - fisherman’s soup. I loved it, absolutely stunning. Total price - 8,400 HUF ($27.72)
So what is the best fisherman’s soup in Hungary, Szeged or Baja? They were both delicious, but without a doubt, I liked the Baja version better. The restaurant we ate at in Baja called Potykacsárda, was easily the best meal I ate in Hungary.
Thanks to Adam (www.adamosvald.com/) for taking us around and eating a lot of delicious food. He’s does amazing motion graphics and animation!

I am a fan of Hungarian food, it is very spicy and very good in taste. Try the sausages there are number one. With love from România! 🇸🇨.
Romanian food also amazing ! ❤️ from a hungarian girl ☺️
@@LoveLove-ur9pl @Constantin Indeed!
That is the flag of Seychelles lmao, thought nobody will notice that it looks like fusion between the hungarian and romanian flag.

I looked at the comment section specifically to find a Polish person :) Greetings to you !
I love Hungarian food and Hungarian culture! Greetings from Romania!
Love hungary 🇭🇺 from Cambodia 🇰🇭
I wish I knew more about Hungary!! The only recipe passed down to me is cabbage rolls and fried fish fins....culture , and my heritage has been lost over the years... I personally am partial to pickled things, peppers, and paprika...not sure if this is genetic or just because its yummy ❤
I'm so proud! Greetings from Hungary :D
Hi Eana! Thank you! I love zacuscă
Matame
I am from Hungary and when I saw he was dipping the bread into the soup at 15:21 i was like: omg he really eats like a Hungarian, I love him! 😁
Yap. That's how you should enjoy Hungarian food! Good bread. If you don't dip it, you put the food on it.
I felt the same way. After pandamic I m going back to visit for sure.
Doesnt have to be bread. There are cities wherr we dont. Where i am from (Baja) we dont eat Halászlé with bread, we eat it with noodles.
@@kristofkapuv877 I live in Budapest -
And the first time I ate Halászlé it was made by my grandpa ! He made it without it being spicy, but he asked if I wanted it spicy and it was more delicious - I haven't eaten Halászlé ever since - :(
And what about when he ate pepperoni with the stem ?
Man, it was even announced in the radio that "the world-renowned food vlogger, Mark Wiens visited our city, Szeged"

Hi Mr. Teacher! 🤙
He’s so eloquent about the description of the food, so appreciative even when something isn’t to his taste, never disrespectful or negative, it takes great skill!
No, that's pretty basic manners
It "takes great skill" to be a Complete and Utter Fake?
SO TRUE THATS WHY I LOVE MY MARK
So true
@@allenfiddler2765 Complete and utter fakes are actually incredibly difficult to produce. But that said, I think he has far more genuineness than you're giving him credit for. Either way, you lose.
Hungary 🇭🇺 Beautiful country in Europe
Hungarian food is very delicious. In my childhood I travelled with my family to Hungary every holiday
I really like how Mark only talks about what he likes. You can kind of tell when he doesn't really like something, but even then he still shows appreciation.
Greetings from Dominican Republic 🇩🇴🇩🇴
hungarian cuisine is insane! love it!
Mark! I have been following you for about 5 years, and i have never even dreamed about you coming to my country. Im so happy to see you in Hungary! Im glad that you liked our national dishes. As a hungarian, I would have recommended you totally the same dishes that you tried. Thank you for this experience :)
Azért a magyar konyha odaver!

I love how enthusiastic Mark is! He makes everything, lol and I mean everything, look and sound SO YUMMY and Delicious!
Adam's face lights up the room when he gets a dish he loves.

As a Hungarian, I absolutely love halászlé! Especially freshly caught from the water :D Enjoy!
It really is the best! Its all you need in life :D and a beer.

Hungarian fish soup is delicious. Washed down with a glass of champagne. I wish I could go back there. My friend had a heavy hangover and this cured it.

I want to go to Hungary! The food looks soooo amazing, and the country looks very beautiful!
Not only does it look beautiful, Hungary is also beautiful, I love living here. And yes, our food is delicious and spicy. It would be nice if you could come and taste it, our cuisine is diverse, and the cooking techniques are different and unique from place to place. We have the saying that "as many houses, as many customs". This makes us special, unique.🥰

Mark, you are a wonderful person.
The food is just your way of talking about love all over the world.
Thank you
It won´t be too hot indeed because this type of pepper, known under different names including "paprika" too or "cherry pepper", is a noble pepper with distinct, sweet and fruity taste but low heat, it does not have many scovilles and so even when used in large amounts the heat is not too overwhelming, however the aroma and taste are unique and said to be excellent. It´s used in various dishes and by various countries, including France and Italy too as well as most countries in South-Eastern Europe. In fact the hot version of the "paprika powder" is made out of exactly this chilli which gives it a mild heat but also the unique and bell pepper like taste, while the non hot version is made from regular red bell peppers.
Try the jellow one, you do not say anymore, that it is a mild chilli :D My father'nose was bleeding from it one time at launch. :D
Watched this yesterday in bed as I was very sick 🤮 as a cheer-me-up.
Everything looks so delicious... and the enticing redness of the paprika. 🤤 I can only imagine the smell and flavor from the color! 💥💥
Thanks Mark :)
tour guide seems so sweet and camera shy- thats cute
I think it's adorable that his kids are with him ❤️
Adam is the guy in your study group who does all the research and writes the majority of the paper but let's you do the presentation.
Got to love an Adam! Lol
@Sandhu S Nah. Adam drove the Wiens' family hours into the countryside; explained to Mark the food they should order; and _tried_ to teach him the correct pronunciation of each dish. It's also invaluable to have a local when setting up a filming. Adam is definitely MVP.
I saw many comments about how quiet Adam is but to be honest he is a typical Hungarian guy. It's Mark's video so obviously Adam doesn't try to be in the spotlight. Here it is a behaviour that we appreciate. 😃 In fact for me as a Hungarian girl, Adam's personality is very attractive. 😃
Botond Nagy mondta recskamatyi 😂
@@MsDezsoe I'm glad you said that. It really annoys me when people make those comments to be honest. He comes across as a really nice, generous and thoughtful guy. Why are people implying you have to be a loud, hilarious extrovert to be attractive? Those people actually can end up just soaking up the energy and exhausting you.
Hungary looks so beautiful and the food looks yummy too!
The Bob Ross of the food world. Mark Wiens is one of a kind.
Hello there. How are you? Its nice to meet you on here and I hope to get to know you much better if that's okay with you. Nice comment.
My whole family comes from Szeged and I love both the city and the food that comes from there
Mark thank you for the amazing series of Hungary! Im so glad you enjoyed our cuisine! ❤️ There would be so much more to explore on the countryside, so I hope you’ll be back one day! 😉
Mark is the best food traveler in history. He never fails to give a taste of the culture. It’s not like a food challenge it’s pure appreciation and tribute to wherever he has a bite. Beyond entertainment. 🙌🏽
Kathleen Gilmore Kathleen spot on
The way he taste the food we can see in his Facial Reaction if it's Taste Ordinary or Good....that's why His my favorite Food Vlogger.♥️
Mark. You just evolutioned from blogger to the best blogger. Awsome food and scenary. Best explanations
I'm Hungarian Canadian and always remember my Grandmother's cooking just amazing
The "tomato" pepper/paprika at the 2nd restaurant in Baja looked like a variety of a Cherry pepper to me. Especially when Mark mentioned at 16:25 that the second pepper was spicier. I've always found hot cherry peppers to have significant variation in spiciness, similar to jalapenos in that regard.
Those are paprika peppers, the ones from which smoked paprika is made that is used in slavic cuisine. The sweet spanish paprika is a different type of pepper. The more elongated peppers shown in his other Hungarian videos are the spicy paprika peppers used to make more spicy paprika pepper.
In europe, paprika is used to refer to ALL types of pepper, spicy or not, except for bell peppers of course. Also 'paprika' is a spanish word, it is called something different in hungary, but people when translating to english just call it paprika because it is similar concept.
@@-jank-willson yes, but it still a pepper.

Great blog as always mark! Pls continue on travelling as soon as this pandemic is done, youre such an inspiration
I'm Hungarian and I watched some videos which was about Hungary but actually this one the first time made me proud. The scenery cuts was awesome too and the picture and texture of foods made me want to eat not to metion Mark's attitude :) altough this fishermen's soup is not my favorite dish but yeah it could be enjoyable, I would eat the Szeged one at night-time with some wine and the Baja's speaks for itself ;) Thanks for the uplifting film and Ádám for guiding him :)

While I do agree that Mark is super-nice person and his videos always bring a smile to my face...I didn't know that he was actually a literal beam of light!
I guess his videos really do "brighten" up peoples days! LOL,j/k (Seriously, though i do know what you and agree...just gotta be careful with the usage of the word "literally" next time. There always a drumroll in my head right before he takes a bite. His reaction is what im here for.
when mark says spicy you must believe it IS spicy
I'm from Hungary but I've eaten in many asian restaurants (India, Pakistan, Vietnam, China). Asian food can be much much hotter. Especially Indian and Pakistanian people use a larger variety and much much larger amount of spices. Most Hungarian foods contain a large amount of grounded dried paprika (can be hot, sweet or both), onions, garlic, black pepper and sometimes caraway. For me, authentic Indian/Pakistanian food is much more intense. Hungarians either love or hate it, there is no in between. I personally love it. 😀
Awesome. I had lunch in that place in Baja last summer. Fun to see my food hero stepping for once in my footsteps ;-)
Thanks for highlighting this place. It is a bit off the road and it doesn't look fancy but surely the food is excellent!
