    FYI: The Crickets were Buddy Hollie's band. They continued the band after Biddy's untimely death. Sonny Curtis wrote the song I Fought The Law and it was recorded by The Crickets, though it didn't make much of splash. That's when Bobby Fuller recorded it and it became a huge hit. It's a very fun song to play (my band used to play it all the time).

    • @SpiderMcGee
      @SpiderMcGee Před 3 lety

      Bobby Fuller also had an untimely death, very unfortunate. Many years ago I worked with someone who was directly related to a band member and gave me some information that was not public knowledge about the case, and it appeared to be a contracted killing. There are theories about a "Buddy Holly Curse" out there that spread to musicians David Box, Ronnie Smith, Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochran, and even Keith Moon. it's a weird one.

      It's not really surprising. The artists concerned are usually band- or stable-mates. A lesser known artist records a good song and the record company thinks "that would be a guaranteed hit if only it was recorded by a better known artist". Sometimes the song's writer allows another artist to record their song before they've had a chance to record it themselves. David Bowie was very magnanimous with his song's and they often appear first on albums that he produced for other artists (e.g. Iggy Pop -China Girl).

    Jamel, I will never stop trying to get you to react to some Barry Manilow! Despite his reputation as a songwriter, Barry had several Billboard hits and popular songs with covers (more than most people realize). Most know about "Mandy"/"Brandy", but his song "Tryin' To Get The Feeling Again" and "The Old Songs" were both covers of songs previously recorded by David Pomeranz; "I Write The Songs" was previously recorded by both David Cassidy and the Captain and Tennille; "Studio Musician" previously by Rupert Holmes (of "The Pina Colada Song" fame); "Can't Smile Without You" previously by David Martin (a U.K. artist); "Somewhere In The Night" previously by Helen Reddy; "Ships" by Ian Hunter; "Let's Hang On" previously Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons; and his last Top 40 charting hit, "Read 'Em and Weep" was previously recorded by Meat Loaf and written by the recently departed Jim Steinman.

  • @tamibrandt
    @tamibrandt Před 3 lety

    Yes, Don Johnson (Miami Vice, Nash Bridges, etc etc.) had a short-lived music career.
    Van Morrison's song was MOONDANCE.
    A little FYI: Bobby Fuller (October 22, 1942 - July 18, 1966) was known for LET HER DANCE and his cover of the Crickets' I FOUGHT THE LAW.
    Within months of I FOUGHT THE LAW becoming a top 10 hit, Fuller was found dead in an automobile parked outside his Hollywood apartment. The Los Angeles deputy medical examiner, Jerry Nelson, performed the autopsy. "The report states that Bobby's face, chest, and side were covered in 'petechial hemorrhages,' probably caused by gasoline vapors and the summer heat. He found no bruises, no broken bones, no cuts. No evidence of beating." The boxes for "accident" and "suicide" were checked, but next to the boxes were question marks on the report. However, nothing seemed to point to suicide, but the police were insistent he committed suicide. An offhand remark made by Bobby’s mother led to the ruling: Bobby's mother said that he had been upset in recent days. But she did NOT suggest that he had been depressed or despondent, as they had reported. Bobby's mother was very upset later when the police concluded that he committed suicide because she believed that he was incapable of that. Despite the official cause of death, some commentators believe Fuller was murdered.
    Erik Greene, a relative of singer Sam Cooke, has cited similarities in the deaths of Cooke and Fuller. Fuller's bandmate Jim Reese suspected that Charles Manson played a role in Fuller's death, but never provided credible evidence; Manson was in prison from 1961 to 1967 at the time of Fuller's death. Manson didn't collect his Family until 1968 and they went on their killing spree in 1968-69 (they killed people before the Tate-LaBianca murders). A sensationalist crime website has speculated that the Los Angeles Police Department may have been involved because of Fuller's connection to a Mafia-related woman. That woman swears she wasn't with Fuller the night he died.
    Fuller was buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in the Hollywood Hills of Los Angeles. His death was profiled in a segment of Unsolved Mysteries. His death was also explored in the May 11, 2015 episode of the NPR program All Things Considered. The program references the book I Fought the Law: The Life and Strange Death of Bobby Fuller by Miriam Linna with contributions by Bobby's brother Randy Fuller. Sometime after the Unsolved Mysteries segment in question initially aired, the cause of Fuller's death was officially changed from "suicide" to "accident." The police have always insisted Bobby's death was a suicide. His family thinks otherwise. His family would like to exhume his body, in hopes that new technology might be able to solve the mystery of his death.

When Art Garfunkel and Paul Simon were no longer a team, Paul was the songwriter, so Art had to find music from other sources. I'd check out his music from the '70s, though, because it is fantastic. "99 Miles From LA" (Albert Hammond), "Disney Girls" (Bruce Johnston), "Since I Don't Have You" (The Skyliners), "All I Know" (Jimmy Webb), "(What a) Wonderful World" (Sam Cooke) and "I Only Have Eyes For You" (Dubin/Warren) are some great examples.

    My pet cover song that I can't help but point out every single time is Led Zeppelin's "When the Levee Breaks". It originally written and performed by Kansas Joe McCoy, and Memphis Minnie in 1929.

    Funny about TWIST AND SHOUT....yes the BEATLES covered the ISLEY BROTHERS version, but when they showed the TOP NOTES, the first still pic was of Paul McCartney and George Harrison playing in the CASBAH, which was the club that MONA BEST (PETE BEST'S mother (Pete was the Beatles drummer BEFORE RINGO) created in the basement of her Liverpool home so the kids would have someplace to gather, and listen to the local bands). Paul and George were NOT in the "TOP NOTES".. When they went to the second pic showing the TOP NOTES, they were playing in the CAVERN in LIVERPOOL where the BEATLES PLAYED 292 times before they became famous. SO I don't know if the TOP NOTES were a Liverpool band or were just PLAYING there. You can see a sign behind them on the back wall that says "BEATLES" I have been a Beatles' fan since hearing "I WANT TO HOLD YOUR HAND" on the radio the day after Christmas in 1963. I have read MANY MANY MANY books on the Beatles and the Liverpool groups and have NEVER EVER HEARD of that group called the TOP NOTES. I am guessing that TWIST and SHOUT NEVER became a hit until THE ISLEY BROTHERS recorded it, and it was HUGE for them! I ALWAYS THOUGHT that THEIR version WAS the ORGINAL, so THAT was a shock for me!

In The UK Alot of Boyband/Girlband Icons cover Songs that were Old School R & B Songs by Chic, The Stylistics, Silk, Shalamar, Adina Howard. You saw that "Black Magic Woman" was originally by Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac, well we just passed a year since he passed, and there have not been much in the way of reactions to Peter's music. The man was one of the greatest and doesn't get much recognition. For options of what to look at, I suggest "Oh Well (pt. 1)", "Man of the World", "The Green Manalishi", "Black Magic Woman", or (for a deeper cut) "Before the Beginning".
