A lot of lesser-known artists and songwriters were happy to have the royalty payments and a larger more well-known artist do a cover. It was quite commonplace in the 50s through the 80s.

Had to look it up myself Jamel, Delia Juanita Warrick (September 25, 1942 - October 18, 2008),[1] known professionally as Dee Dee Warwick, was an American soul singer. Born in Newark, New Jersey, she was the sister of singer Dionne Warwick, the niece of Cissy Houston, and a first cousin of singers Whitney Houston and Leontyne Price. Wikipedia.
Knew Rod Stewart's was a cover, having most of his LPs, with and without the Faces from the 70s.

"We've Only Just Begun" was written for a commercial (by Paul Williams, who also sang it in the commercial), believe it or not. I always thought it was fleshed out as a full song and went straight to the Carpenters, but it looks like somebody else recorded it in-between.
Here's a link to the original commercial:

I wasn't too surprised about The Carpenters. There are a lot of artists that never wrote their own music. They did covers or songs that were written for them. Sinatra and Elvis come to mind. Also, many, if not most groups, start as cover bands. Heart and The Beatles are good examples.

Not exactly a cover, but maybe similar to the Bon Jovi song (different lyrics put to the music of another song). Parts of "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy" by Rod Stewart is based on 2 earlier songs, which are "Taj Mahal" by Jorge Ben & "Put Something Down On It" by Bobby Womack. A lot of times the original was not a hit or maybe it was just an album track and not a single, but the remake was a big radio hit. So many people don't know it's a cover. Also probably not a lot of people today are listening to hit songs from the 1910s through 1940s. Songs that are called "standards" or "Great American Songbook" have been recorded by hundreds and even thousands of acts. So have many Christmas songs, such as "Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer" & "Silent Night".

I never listened to them much. The Bon Jovi one is the most shocking. I still can’t believe it. I need to individually verify it. Sometimes the original is a flop and the cover becomes a hit.

I knew most of these because pf my mom and my grandma.
That 1929 song. She heard me listening to it and said, isn't that a great cover?
I was like no, it's the original.
She sat me down at 7 yrs old and blew my little mind wide open.

In many cases the covers were better and different from the originals. In the Carpenters case, they had a lot of support from other artists. Like Leon Russell's 'A Song For You '.
