Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Tournament Fighters (SNES) Playthrough

  • A playthrough of Konami's 1993 license-based versus fighter for the Super Nintendo, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Tournament Fighters.
This video shows two separate runs through the game, both played on the highest difficulty setting in order to show the best endings:
    Leonardo, Story mode 2:57
    Aska, Tournament mode 27:32
At 58:14 I let the attract mode play on loop to show all of the character profiles.
Releasing shortly after its Genesis cousin ( • Teenage Mutant Ninja T... ), the SNES's version of Tournament Fighters was the second game in Konami's trio of fighting games starring the half-shell heroes. Though they're both Street Fighter II-style fighting games that were developed concurrently at the same company, the experiences that the games offered couldn't have been more different. The SNES version had more effort, skill, and resources poured into its production, and it really shows.
The 2P versus game aside, there are two main game modes: the story mode follows the turtles as they explore New York searching for April and Splinter, while the tournament mode is set up like a game show in which characters can win big money and big prizes.
The roster features twelve characters, ten of whom are playable without a code: you get the four turtles, Shredder, Aska, Wingnut, Chrome Dome, Armaggon, and War. Karai and Rat King serve as the bosses. The characters, including the turtles, play quite differently from one another. Whether you like grapple-happy wrestlers, fireball spammers, or long-range aerial attackers, the variety caters to a wide range of play styles. Even better is that the characters don't feel like mere clones of Street Fighter II's character archetypes.
I do wish that they'd included Bebop and Rocksteady as more than background decoration, though!
Everyone has a good assortment of special and ultimate moves, but the ebb and flow of play is a lot more nuanced than the NES ( • Teenage Mutant Ninja T... ) and Genesis versions of Tournament Fighters. The combo system is better developed, the inclusion of weapons allows for better balancing between characters in terms of range and power, and the game's overall emphasis on speed makes for some pretty dynamic and exciting match-ups. The gameplay isn't quite as tight and as polished as Street Fighter II Turbo's, but it's excellent nonetheless.
The art is top-notch for a SNES game, rivalling even arcade fighters of its time. The characters and backdrops really pop thanks to the phenomenal use of color and the careful attention to small details, and the animations flow well and give attacks a solid sense of impact. The music is equally well done - the soundtrack isn't as memorable as what you'll hear in Turtles in Time ( • Teenage Mutant Ninja T... ), but it's just as well written and the sound quality is outstanding.
The SNES version is widely regarded as the best of the Tournament Fighters games, and as one of the best fighting games on the SNES, it deserves that distinction. I'm glad that all three will finally be available again once the Cowabunga Collection drops, but I have no doubt that this will be the center of focus for fighting game fans.

The SNES version of Tournament Fighters is one of the system's best fighting games, and by far the best of the three TMNT versus-fighters. It was a really good call to include this in the upcoming Cowabunga Collection!

@@ancientone5903 I think Aska would've made more sense in the 2003 TMNT, where Karai is actually one of the main characters from seasons 2-5, both as an enemy & ally. In the 1987 cartoon, Aska would just be a cameo like Lotus.

The SNES entry of Tournament Fighters is without a doubt the most well known and most beloved one of the trio. This one follows all of Street Fighter II's gameplay conventions more closely in a very good way, and it was one of the first fighting games to implement Super Moves, a concept that was introduced in Art of Fighting a year prior, and would later be popularized and standardized by Super Street Fighter II Turbo the following year in 1994. This game's art and setting is a huge amalgamation of the cartoon series and the comics, both Mirage Studios and Archie Comics, it shows in the character roster. An excellent fighting game all around that fans of the genre should give a shot. Also a trivia about Aska, in early screenshots of the game her name was originally Mitsu, indicating that during the production she was meant to be a character from the live action TMNT movies, continuing that trend that has been done with Tokka, Rahzar, and Tatsu. However, likely due to the poor reception of the third movie, they decided to change her name and turned Aska into an OC made for this game to fill the female fighter spot instead, following the footsteps of Tora, Shogun, and Sissyphus.

    * sighs * I missed playing Tournament Fighters on SNES. My cousin used to own it until it was missing and couldn't be able to find it. It was such a fun and addicting tournament fighting game ever made since Street Fighter II and my ace in this game will always be Raph. As a kid, I keep saying and guessing the names they say.
Until, 15 years later when CZcams existed and they posted game playthroughs, I noticed there was a Super Famicom version called Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Warriors, which that's the Japanese version of Tournament Fighters. I discovered there are some differences in the game in comparison with the SNES version. The Turtles' voices sounded so clearer than the US and has this 80s TMNT cartoon vibe to it. For example, if you use Leo's projectile attack which now I learn what the name of the move is -- Shining Cutter. Wow! Never thought an 16 bit console can handle such a crystal clear voice. Also, another difference comes from Aska was her outfit and her victory pose. As you already knew, in the Japanese version, her outfit is too skimpy while in the US version modify that to avoid the fan-service for the younger viewers. The mugshots next to the health bar were different than the US like Donatello, Wingnut, Aska (though, she smiles in the SFC while the US makes her frown), Chrome Dome, and Karai. Also, the Story Mode, the Turtles Blimp have different designs from each other.
Whew....sorry if that is too much explaining and I am nerding myself through. ^^; Other than that, great going to upload the two playthroughs, man and also on your Turtles in Time. This one's for the Cowabunga Collection! :D

Somehow, if an Arcade version of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tournament Fighters ever came out in the 1990s, it would feel much more towards to its SNES counterpart with a few known differences (the Big What If idea that could of happened back in the mid if not late 1990s).
The Arcade version of TMNTs Tournament Fighters would come out after the Console versions, unlike the last two TMNTs Arcade Games coming out before said Console versions.
The fighter roaster to the Arcade version of TMNTs Tournament Fighters would be like SNES counterpart with additional fighters from the NES & Genesis counterparts respectfully: April O'Neil, Casey Jones, Hothead, Krang (another boss fighter), Ray Fillet & Sisyphus (Musha Beetle in the Japanese version).
Stages from the Genesis version and perhaps the NES version of TMNTs Tournmanet Fighters may also appear in the Arcade version.
Super Shredder would also be the final boss fighter, a first for the Arcade version of any TMNTs game as Shredder was only seen pulling off his Super Form in the Console versions (Konami Era Only) as seen in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: Secrets of the Ooze Film.
To simply put, if an Arcade version of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Tournament Fighters where to ever be seen sitting in a Local Arcade as well as a Pizza Restaurant back in the mid to late 1990s, the amount of Quarters it would accoumate would be immense! Plus it and its Gameboy counterpart (if a Tournament Fighters version for that also happened) would also be included in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Cowabunga Collection resulting in a total of 15 games in one insane package!

    An Art of Fighting reference:
3:00 In story mode you can play only as the protagonists of the game (like in Art of Fighting where you can only play with Ryo and Robert).
27:35 In tournament and vs modes you can play with every character (like in Art of Fighting where you can play with everyone).
The updated Japanese version, Mutant Warriors, has more content, revamped (and better) voices, QoL fixes and game balancements.

28:50 ...It's not the same without Aska doing her winning pose in Mai Shiranui's style from the updated Japanese version.

A *HUGE* improvement over the Genesis version. For one thing, you can actually *_do combos_* in it, the AI isn't nearly as cheap, the roster is better allowing you play as characters like Shredder, and tons of more interesting characters like Aska or... a shark? And the best part is that you do not have to play the hardest difficulty just to get a crappy ending that is not worth your time in the slightest. You get endings that are actually entertaining and have a high replayability factor.

And you rescue April in Story Mode. I play TMNT games to rescue April.
In Genesis version, you use April and she looks like Blaze Fielding from Streets of Rage. There, you make endings according to the difficulty level, not according to your character.

It's mainly just figuring out how the CPU reacts to different moves. You can bait most of them pretty easily.

This game was underrated. Yes it copied from Street Fighter but every fighting game did at this time. The Genesis & NES versions was garbage.

This is overall the more polished and well made game for sure out of the 2 16-bit TMNT TF games. But the music is a different story. The soundtrack in the Genesis game was just awesome, and the music here, while fitting, is pretty forgettable in my opinion.
