  • Political murders in Belarus: For the first time a witness has spoken out in an exclusive interview with DW. Twenty years ago, three prominent members of the opposition disappeared without a trace. Back then rumors began to circulate that they had been assassinated by a death squad.
Were the three men Yuri Zakharenko, Viktor Gonchar and Anatoly Krasovsky, all members of the opposition, abducted and murdered by a hit squad in 1999? This is the rumor that has circulated ever since. Yet the presumed contract killings under the authoritarian leadership of President Alexander Lukashenko have never been proven. Now a key witness has come forward to shed light on the matter. At the time of the killings, Juri G. was serving in a special unit of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. Now he has revealed insider knowledge of the crime. He depicts the precise sequence of events, from the kidnappings to the disposal of the bodies. The former elite soldier names the culprits and admits to being an accessory to the murders. His information leaves little doubt that in 1999 government agencies in Minsk brutally eliminated the leaders of the opposition in Belarus. How do the relatives of the deceased react to this disclosure? What does it mean for the already tense relationship between Belarus and Europe? And what is it like to live with such guilt? A DW exclusive: Assassination in Minsk - A Witness Speaks Out

I like to imagine however that there will be some great awakening, and eight peoples revolution against authoritarianism, and all of these criminals will be brought before the courts, tried, convicted, and publicly executed. maybe not every country in the world is destined to become a democracy....? Different countries have different cultures, history and different mentalities so a one fit democratic model does not work for every nation state. Idealism is the driving force behind the push to democratize every single country - we all know idealism and reality are two very different things.

    • @ladybug5859
      @ladybug5859 Před 2 lety +1

This is a good point and I often thought of that when we tried to impose democracy on the Middle East. THEY are racially a different people; religion is different; history is different; in many cases their landscape is completely different, impenetrable mountains or deserts; and in large part their way of being is based on male Supremacy and female submission which will never ever allow for a democracy to be superimposed upon it. YOU can put that in your pipe and smoke it 😊
NOW in Belarus, I would like to see what are the female male relationships. I've been watching Ukraine since the War began and I feel there's a great equality between the sexes in Ukraine and hence I wonder-- how are the Belarus people just to the north so very different? I tend to think they are NOT different. I tend to think they have a capacity for democracy; a capacity for the equality between the sexes; a capacity to actually govern themselves. This man who ordered the murders-- and we know it was done by him or as they say-- if the president doesn't know the President should have known as that is his job hence the burden and culpability falls on the president. HE should be tried for war crimes; punished accordingly; and removed from his country of origin. JUST as in many parts of the former Soviet Union, ALL statues from that era should come down & should be destroyed and all departments, such as the KGB, should be eliminated and replaced by a Judicial System. IT can be done.
And why do I feel so forcefully on this issue. MY ancestors come from Belarus and I always thought that was really great and and really fascinating and what an exotic country! I will also say they were German--possibly the German section that man went to to be healed from the wounds that were inflicted on him by that despot.
THAT would be an interesting documentary: to see how the Germans have interfaced with the Russians in Belarus over time. BUT in all events, this country is NOT a country to be proud of having an ancestor from. THAT said, my ancestors left in the early 1800s so all these countries were very similar at that time and under domination of the austro-hungarian Empire, I believe. . IT does make me want to investigate that.
I unlike the Irish woman have NO desire to go to a dictatorship and support it with my money & my presence. AS you can see, I wouldn't last a minute in a dictatorship because I always speak my mind --that's how I am; that's how I was raised; and the country in which I live allows for that. Censorship as we know is rampant in these United States of America. We haven't quite tipped over into the elimination of dissenting voices n people but that will be the next step. Trump-- following in Bush Jr's footsteps-- started that and the far LEFT is carrying it on.
Back to your original contention that some people might want to live under a dictatorship versus a democracy: Congressman Greene said she's pro-putin and had a rally with a thousand people shouting out Putin Putin Putin.
MY response is simple: I want everyone to be happy; it appears these people will be happy living in Russia under a dictatorship; they have expressed THIS very vociferously. So we must taje them at their word & let them go. WE must help them go to Russia and let them fight for the Russians in this new war against Ukraine. Of course their American passports must be stripped from them. YOU 'VE got to put your money where your mouth is and put your body on the line. SO let's help them. 🚢Bon voyage. We ship our trash to China; LETS ship our human trash to Russia, paid one way fare, with no chance of return. What do you think? take ❤

This video starts with a conceptual error; "a right to live".
Rights do no exist, anywhere. Never have, never can, never will.
The excessively privileged are able to pretend that THEY have rights, because they can pay to have the assertion affirmed.
The metrics of merit for the granting, modifying, suspending and revoking of OUR privileges, are set by the 400 families of the global oligarchy.
Cross them and the merits of your privilege to exist will be deleted, along with your person.
There's far less difference between the "worst places" in the world, and those imagined to be the "best places" in the world.
Geography doesn't matter. When they want you silenced, you will be, wherever you go.

@@heigsu We all have our own issues.
If you look at the UK there's a whole plethora of them regarding human rights violations, war crimes, suppression of the freedom of the press, and Prince Andrew issue currently, etc, etc.
They don't have to go overseas to go looking for people that have been disappeared by a state actor,...on the British Isles the Black&Tan's whom had a very intimate relationship with the UK government disappeared or outright assassinated many people in Northern Ireland 30 odd years ago and still non have been brought to justice.
Currently the UK refuses to deliver several British Military personnel to the ICC in The Hague (Den Haag) because they stand accused of war crimes and need to awnser for those, 0 action has been taken regarding these individuals by the UK itself.
Now suddenly our hart's strings are being pulled for a story decade's old all the way in Belarus,...and the timing, c'mon 😉.

This is how politics works all over the world. No different because is in Belarus. But I would remember people that selling your country to USA will never help in the develpment, we see this all over the world too. I would understand an opposition to make things better internally but NEVER getting "close" to the west. Tell this to South America (I live in SA) and Africa, we never had anything good from these rats. So we are organizing internaly with our own interests and needs and NEVER AGAIN give them our gold to receive poverty, exploitation, and hunger. Capitalism is not the answer., Find something better that works for your country, your system, your culture. Don't seel yourself for cheap.
