- I had a dream. And it was to create a crazy, complicated floating island battle stage.
This video is more of a showcase of what's possible with terrain building. It's also a love letter to all my engineering-oriented crafters; to those who are curious about the limits of their creative potential; to fans of Dimension 20; and to those who have had the privilege of experiencing a fully fleshed campaign--this video is for you!

This is beautiful Rach, as someone who's been through a 2 year long DnD campaign am sure this a beyond epic way to conclude things. :D
Hehehe thank you! And it really was!
Cool homade bearing idea with the jar lids and marbles 🐙🐙🐙🐙🐙
Thank you! 😊
"Or just watch this and live vicariously through me" ❤
Modularity is a fantastic thing, but, there are scenarios and fight who deserves their own amazing terrain!!!
Yesss!! That's exactly how I felt making this. It was extra sweet to give myself permission to branch out haha.
This was dope as hell and I'm sure your finale was as epic and memorable as your terrain. I think anyone would be lucky to have you as their DM.
Also I do really appreciate your puns/wordplay but I'm ngl this was the first time I watched an episode and genuinely didn't know what you were trying to say because of the puns. Still really appreciate the video :]
Thank you for both the compliments and the feedback! I'm trying to find a balance between having fun with the puns and legit comprehension, and even in writing I felt some of the strain 😅 So I will definitely keep this in mind for future videos!
Hello! My kids and I love watching miniature creating videos, and we follow Studson Studios, Boylei Hobby Time and North of the Border (though my kids only ever refer to his channel as Tiny Nerdy Things). They're all great, but I was very aware that they're all guys, and I have a 9 year old daughter. We just watched this one, which popped up in my recommended feed, and then your Mesa one, and we loved both! Happy new subscriber! Thanks for producing these!
This is good dad-ing we’ll done
This is incredibly heart-warming to me and is a great reminder of the importance of female representation within the hobby space. I love that this was in your scope of awareness and I'm absolutely honoured to help level the playing field for your daughter 😊 Welcome to the channel, to you and all your kids!
That’s awesome! My 9 year old daughter loves Rachel and Adam too. Love it!
You took your crafting and video skills to another level here. Several of them!
Yes! And I shall continue to move and shift through this craft accordingly haha.
The thumbnail looks AMAZING! 💛
Looking forward to seeing how you created the floating islands ^-^
Thank you for sharing, much appreciated! 🙌
All the best :)
Thank you thank you! I hope the video served you well :)
You have seriously out pun yourself on this build. Amazing work!
Hahaha thank you! Some were definitely a stretch but it had to be done!
I vibe this video premise haha, awesome work mate, stellar build!
Aaahhhh I think you LIVE this video's premise! Thanks so much for the compliments!
@@raecheldoes Likewise haha, happy crafting!
I did a whole table of floating lava islands terrain. Well if you count my airship race in hell I did 2 tables plus a city to go on top. Plastic chains are really light and make it easy to keep the build more stable. If you keep it modular its easy to store and reuse in a TON of different set ups. I just used it for a game of cultists vs demons. I want to do a build with my sucubus palace as a center piece around all the islands but I don't want to see up a 6 for by 18 foot table again. I bought a bolt of fire looking cloth to cover it. Some day I'll do it. Glad you have that go for it attitude!!!
That sounds like an incredible set up and along the similar lines of really going all out creativity-wise! Your players must've LOVED it.
So this video kind of came at the perfect time. I'm currently building the finale of my 2 year long campaign as well! I'm making an entire segment of the city my players have lived in and they'll protect it during a siege from the 3rd BBEG.
And now I'm going to steal your idea. An insane second act with floating islands will appear when the original BBEG who has been defeated returns.
Thank you for this video!!
Aaahhhh that sounds so sweet! I'm a huge fan of surprise-phase-2 parts of encounters, especially when it elevates the experience at the table. I'm sure your players are going to absolutely love it!
Rae'chel thanks for another video
You're veeery welcome 😊
Gods this is so freaking cool. Rae'chel you are an expert level conjuration wizard. 11/10 bravo. Thanks for the tutorial and for the inspiration. Also the puns 💜
Ahh thank you for such high praise!!! I shall take this as inspiration to continue my arcane practices 🧙🏻♀️
I love the ideas and the puns!! So good
That looks so sweet!!! The double-rotation is such a cool feature, I’m sure it’ll be lots if fun to game on!
Thank you, thank you! It was a lot of fun to play on and super dynamic to navigate 😊
Jaw dropping and inspirational! Love that with each build, you utilize techniques and skills from the last ones. It’s so helpful to see how the crafting skills I’ve been *building* lately will serve as a foundation for more aspirational projects in the future!
Aahhh thank you! I'm glad that these videos continue to be helpful/inspire others to create! I'm hopefully it'll contribute to your *towering* success.
I also subscribe to the idea of not being afraid of giving your players huge rewards, like a *Flying Citadel* as a base, just plan your stories with that in mind afterwards! They still need to protect it from eventual attacks and they get to improve on it over time to the point it becomes a (very) cherished character itself, reusability on top of it is a great reason for building a wonderful diorama like that! =) Everything looks absolutely incredible and profoundly inspirational, Rae'chel! Congratulations!!! ^^
Aah that's a great way to both tie a battle set into a narrative and use it to inspire the narrative! And there's something appealing about the idea of returning to the same stage with updates that reflect their growing relationship with the setting haha. Thank you for the compliments and thoughtful comment!
Very innovative once again, that's what keeps me coming back for more. Homemade lazy susan bearing, you kidding me? Genius.
Honestly was so proud of it 😎
This is so cool, I can see some huge deamon or something smashing the terrain and rising out of the holes or something.
7:47 "And here's the flinal project. What crazy encounters came you think of to take place on this earth shattering tff....." What were you going to say? Terrain probably. I just thought it was funny.
This is SO freaking amazing!
I'm in awe of this! What a cool set up!
You're such a dork.
I'm here for all of it.
It looked so awesome falling apart. This is the most impressive build i have ever seen and has some cool new information and tricks.
That part was especially fun to edit haha. Thank you for the high praise! 🥹
@@raecheldoes I have started building my own version and have a scenario already planned. A battle with a powerful litch in the astral plane. As the island breaks apart.
Wow, I absolutely love that light effect!
You can achieve wonders with LED strip lights and a precariously dangling galaxy light hanging from the ceiling haha.
Absolutely awesome terrain!!!!
This is incredible!
I've long wanted to make a mechanically "randomising" dungeon where you turn a crank at the end of your turn and everything moves around and now the path you were taking is no longer going to lead anywhere and you have to decide on whether you should go back knowing that you might just run into another dead end in that direction or continue forward into the dead end hoping its open again when you reach it. There'd also be switches around the dungeon and the right combination would create a path to the end that doesn't change.
Ah I've seen a one-shot or a written encounter that reminds me of this! It would be absolutely crazy to actually make! ....but now I want to LOL.
That is an epic build!!
This is a really cool build and gave me lots of ideas. Thanks for sharing.
Woohoo! Inspiring other creators is the most I can ask for 🥲
Amazing, as always! An inspiring tutorial for such a unique encounter!
Thank you, thank you!!
Amazing terrain!
That's amazing! Great job!
Thank you!
So bloody good 🔥
Wow, that looks so fun to play at.
Awesome!!!
Very ambitious, and very cool! I love how it turned out. Great work!
Thank you! And yeah it definitely was an undertaking 😅
So cool!
Now youre making me look into building a mechanism to make the higher layers rotate clockwise when the bottom layers are rotated counterclockwise
That would've been SO sweet to have it mechanized!
It ain't no paradise island, but this island can fly! Splendid work! (And as always, the puns warms my heart ❤ and soul 👻 )
Yessss I'm glad the puns this time around could satis-fly your appetite for them :P
This is amazing.
this is sick!!
Wow freakin awesome!
Whoa! It looks great, and the two configuration setup is fantastic design. Love it!
Yesss thank you!!
Great video, excellent result and helpful tutorial
I'm glad you enjoyed it 🫡
Great video. Very thought out and intelligent. Step by step introductions were great. Simple and dun design that gave Olympic results. Thanks for sharing. Impressive.
Thank you for the kind and specific feedback! 😊
Dang, that's awesome
wow! Incredible build and great video 🙌 Definitely inspired me to try something like this for my next BBEG encounter 🎲⚔👍
I was watching this and thought, “Wow, that pun sounds a lot like my name.” Lo and behold it was! 😆 Rae’chel this is an incredible build! I hope to try something on a slightly smaller scale. Keep it up! 💖
Not sure how I missed this video. This looks amazing! I did a floating island "dream sequence" battle similar to this.. Obviously I did not think of doing the island that splits apart. I do love the concept though. Very very well done..
This is next level stuff!
Literally!
Very cool and creative thinking.
Thank you!
Yay, you're back!
🤗
Truly incredible
:O Thank you!
Incredible work. Walking in for a D&D session and seeing this on the table would be so inspiring!
The players were SO stoked!
Wow that turned out amazing! And so modular despite being made so specifically for one encounter. There's no way to avoid reusing all those pieces!
Thank you! Yes, I don't doubt that it's definitely going to come in handy in the future! It's just a matter of waiting for the right encounter...
Dang! This is wild you have some very lucky players!
Haha thank you! I think so too :P
Bruh that's sick. That'd be cool as all get out to play on, either with flying transports or some way to hop between fragments.
Yes! Some of the players cast fly in order to navigate the battlefield and some zipped around making acrobatics checks to successfully navigate the chains.
Wow
This is fantastic. I don't really understand why it was magnetized to all fit together when in final form it was floating separate pieces?
Absolutely excellent work though!
Thank you! I had it all magnetized because we used it as a whole island to start, and then for phase 2 of the battle, had it break apart. Needless to say, the party was pleasantly surprised haha.
This is awesome! I've been planning a Brikwars (essentially Lego Warhammer) game in Hell for some time now and had no idea how to make a battlefield. I was planning to do something with a bunch of floating islands à la Doom 3&4 - basically something very similar to your board. Had no idea how to make something like that, but this may help ^^
These parts breaking off at 7:23 is some nightmare shit. :O
Thank you so much for the spackle tip. I too live in an area without 2 inch foam and just made table top witchcrafts dungeon system. Couldn’t figure out what would work best to fill it.
You're welcome! I find spackle easiest because I don't need to mix anything, but plaster or grout filler would work too.
That is pretty cool, I’m new to your channel, really enjoying it. I design terrain, lots of it, got a huge backlog of painting. Working through it on my channel.
Ahh yep there's never a shortage of projects to paint haha. Well I'm glad to be part of the terrain scene with you 🤗
@@raecheldoes the more of us the more for everyone else.
That was extraordinary. I am continually amazed not only by the creations but the creativity that goes into these projects. My only question is: how do you store all these various projects and pieces? Thank you for another wonderful video.
Thank you, thank you! Honestly, this piece has been the absolute hardest to store haha, so I keep it as a focal display piece/as a stage to showcase some minis. The modular pieces are easy enough to store vertically in boxes, and the grass pieces I store on metal shelves so they can be store vertically and spaced apart.
Ma'am you are talented an inspiring. 🤩
Hehe thank you! 😊
@@raecheldoes No problem.
Donate them to your local game store! Great way to let them be used by others!
🎉🎉🎉
Oooh that's a great option and I will definitely keep it in mind!
Two masons jar lid sticked together with marbles to create a bearing is such a clever idea, I wish I could thank you for that but I became sick again of my IWantToMakeThatosis… yeah not cool
Ah damn, it is unfortunately one of the side effects of cool ideas. My condolences to you and your contracted infection 😞
Wrote this before watching the video. But thanks for the tiles series, specially the water ground tiles. I am attempting to a jungle based board inspired by your stuff and RP Archive's. :) My plan is to have different layers connected by magnets.
Woohoo! I'm super happy to hear that the water tiles are useful to you. I'm sure it'll go swimmingly :P
👌👌👌
Build the Bat Cave!
This is so insane! I'd love to see your take on something like the slowly "sinking" terrain of the Crown of Candy yoghurt shoals battle. How did you handle the reassembly at the table with your players? Did you ask them to leave the room for a minute, or did you do it in front of them?
I've honestly had thoughts about other dynamic terrain like something slowly rising or sinking! And for the reassembly, I narrated the transition and then called an intermission and reassembled it with them in the room! It was a cool experience letting them see the work I put in and for them to start speculating their battle tactics as I was putting it together haha.
Your players are lucky, that's so awesome! How did you transition from phase one to two in session?
Thank you very much! When we ended phase one, I narrated the changes to their environment, and then declared we would take a 15min intermission so that I could set up for the next phase and then changed the battlefield in front of them. It was hugely rewarding to allow them to see the process because I think it also helped them see the work that went into it, which helped feed the little validation-seeking fairy in my brain haha.
This looks amazing!!
What kind of material is this Foam/Styrofoam?
I have so many ideas after watching this Video!
All my respects.
All my respects to receiving all your respects.
@@raecheldoes in truth, you realized one of my forbidded dreams. I love reivers. I love them with grapnel launchers and grav chutes. And i really like fly units. So a not flat terrain, but a mostly vertical one, maybe with real hollow spaces, could be ideal for the game i'd like to play.
And the project itself is amazing, too.
I would love to see the board in action a bit more. Does it break apart during use? I’m not sure I’m completely understanding
Where do I find a dm like you lol.
Amazing work
Thank you! And I'm inclined to say we're a growing population so hopefully somewhere, sometime in the future haha.
Holy #ukn' $h!t! This is the most amazing craft I've seen in a long, long time. So many ideas now for what I need to create for my final boss fight in two years!!! Thank you!!!
I appreciate your enthusiasm and will let it go straight to my head hahaha. I hope the ideas serve you well and you have a crazy epic fight!
wait so the platforms falling off by themselves over time is actually kinda cool: be careful guys.
Roll a 5 on a survival check: "Yeah I mean the ground is rumbling probably from the impact of enemy attacks hitting the ground but you figure nothing beyond that."
Would love to make this in 3d for a vr environment.
Ohh that would be so cool!
@@raecheldoes ill keep you updated somehow on the process.
On game night, did you have any problems with the lower islands rotating or slant over as figurines and such were added?
I didn't! The minis were all light enough that it wasn't a worry at all. Even larger minis weren't a problem with the friction fit and rotating.
Now I have a disease called IWannaMakeThatTooSis!
LOL legit laughed out loud at this. Sorry to have infected you 😂
What are the lights used facing down on the terrain?
I had a galaxy light projector that I MacGyver-ed to hang from my ceiling!
Oh the puns... my groaner is broke!
😋
Haha they were definitely extra groan-worthy this time!
@@raecheldoes yup! Some of your best work. 👍👍
Wait wait wait-- what's that top island hanging from at the end?!
🤫
Jk I had some magnets and string hanging from the ceiling :P
RAD.
whoops it cuts off at the end
It may or may not be intentional :D
Are those Stardew Valley sound effects I hear?
Neat potato tattoo
😎
Amazing work Rae'chel! Get in touch if you want to upgrade the electronics in your terrain too. I love working with YT'ers that want to upgrade their builds!
Ooh thanks for reaching out and for the compliment! I will keep you in mind for the future 😊
The amount of pun-ishment ewe rammed into this video was.... Well it was woolly baahd.
Also what does the tattoo on your left forearm mean.
5:12 that is brilliant.
Also I can't say I've ever noticed a woman's nails before, but yours are really nice/they appear to be home-grown??
LOL I know it's a real lev-it-ate-it (love it hate it) relationship with the puns. And ummm it says, "potato" 🤭. Thank you for all the other points! And yes my nails grow both out of privilege (of natural nail strength) and laziness LOL.
why not just use a ball-bearing instead of marbles?
Marbles are basically ballbearings. Just cheaper and easier to find.
I legit just borrowed those marbles from a Chinese Checkers boardgame I own, soooo I used them because they were free and available 🙃
Potato?
Maybe 👀
Jealous of how Punny you are
I try. I try very hard LOL.
potato
🤫
I vibe this video premise haha, awesome work mate, stellar build!
